So many people, especially non-Igbos, have wondered why Soludo has received the kind of backlash he has received for his article against Obi where he dismissed Obi’s chances, declaring that “Obi knows he can’t and won’t win”.

Well, to help you understand why every respondent has lashed out at Soludo for writing the infamous article, let me tell you the story of the man who drank the water that made his villagers mad.

A man traveled to another town from his village and stayed for some months. While he was away, a bad rain fell and contaminated the river which everyone in the village uses. The rain was bad because it caused madness. So everyone who drank of the water became mad. But since there was no other source of water for the village, the entire village had drank from the river and became mad before they could realize that it was the river that was making everyone mad. But one member of the village was still sane; the man who traveled before the rain fell.

Not long after, the man returned from his travel and found out that everyone in his village had become mad. Upon enquires, he was told that a bad rain fell and contaminated their river and made the entire village mad.

The man didn’t know what to do. He was the only sane man among an entire mad village. Or in that situation, the man was the odd one out - madness had become the new normal in the village.

After deep contemplation, the man went to the river, fetched the water and drank and became mad too. Since madness had become the new normal, he wouldn’t be the odd one out. He didn’t want to be the only sane man among mad people.

The 48 Laws of Power reinforced this same line of thinking when it admonished, that “Isolation is Dangerous”. Never be the odd one out among a pack or a whole; you’d be an easy target.

This is the wisdom that Soludo lacked. Let’s assume all Igbos had become mad because of what they perceive as successive years of marginalization by successive governments in Nigeria since after the war, it was totally wrong, unintelligent, unwise of Soludo to try to be the only sane Igbo man left.

Now, to the crux of this piece…. One of the things Soludo accused the entire Igbos of is engagement in what he termed “Nzogbu Nzogbu Politics”. By that I’m sure he means the Igbos’ habit of moving all out for one candidate once they are convinced you will represent their interest or that they just feel you better than your competitors.

This is unlike other tribes like the Yoruba who will always spread their votes into almost two equal halves among the leading candidates. That way, whoever wins will not accuse the Yoruba of not supporting him.

The same can also be said of the north to an extent. Even though we have seen them consistently voting one way for Muhammadu Buhari since 2003 till 2019.

But the Igbos, in their spirit of “one for all and all for one”, always vote in one way traffic for their candidate of choice. The implication of this is that if their candidate fails to win, the victorious candidate will despise the Southeast for failing to vote for him; as is the case with president Buhari which is what gave birth to his “5%” infamous statement.

Now, this is what Soludo wants the Igbos to change. Soludo wants Igbos to become like the Yoruba and learn to divide themselves equally amongst leading candidates so that whoever wins, our interest will be protected.

As much as the argument seems plausible and appealing, you cannot force a people to become who they are not. Historically, Igbos are known as an acephalous people but I think God gave us one mind. And that’s why it’s easy to predict what all Igbos will do in any given situation.

While this “Nzogbu Nzogbu politics” obviously has its disadvantages, it sure has its advantages. One of the major advantages is that anyone or region who wants to align with the Igbos knows that if an alliance happens between us and them, they’ve got all Igbos and our votes and support come rain and shine.

It was the politics that gave Zik victory in the 1960s and created his alliance with the north.

It was the politics that created the alliance between Shagari and Ekwueme.

It was the politics that made Jonathan take up an Igbo name.

So lastly, I want to conclude by saying that while Soludo may think we are not playing politics the right way and need to change tactics, I make due to state that one way to succeed in life is to choose what works for you and stick to it and be consistent with it even there are momentary consequences.

“All for one and one for all” is the hallmark of the Igbo spirit and nothing is about to change that anytime soon; not even a thousand Soludo.

I was watching UN secretary General, António Guterres on CNN this morning speaking & addressing about Climate Change and I was so impressed by the way he spoke. I really learnt so many things from his speech today.

I was so marveled and I asked myself whether this is not the same climate change they asked Tinubu to address that he was busy talking gibberish. Please what concerns climate change with poisoned holy communion & church rat?
