How true is this: “Does anybody remember Dr Ishola Oyenusi and gang? They introduced armed robbery into nigeria in the early 70’s. Does anybody remember professor Wole Soinka? he introoduced cultism into nigeria that is now … wreaking havoc on the nation. Does anybody remember GBOMO GBOMO? it is child kidnapping for rituals happening in yorubaland as far back as the 60’s long before any nigerian knew of kidnapping. Does anyone rememberthe 1964 rigged elections in the western region which led to the first coup and crisis that caused the civil war? The yorubas were the first to start and introduce election rigging in nigeria after the departure of the colonial masters. Does anyone remember operation wetie? That was the introduction of thuggery, arson, mass murders and other forms of violence in yorubaland from 1964. Does anyone remember the state of emergency in the western region in 1962? Yorubaland was the place were the first state of emergency in nigeria’s history was imposed because of the lawlessness in the region then. Does anyone remember the carpet crossing wahala? that was the introduction of tribal politics in nigeria when awolowo convinced the yoruba members of Azikiwe’s party the NCNC who won seats in the western region to cross carpet on tribal grounds thereby introducing tribal politics into nigeria. Does anyone remember the first coup trial in 1963? Obafemi awolowo was tried and jailed for coup plotting in 1963 becoming the first nigerian and yoruba in nigerian history to be involved in coup plotting. Does anyone remember the ITT scam in the early 70’s? that was the contract money for nigeria’s telecommunications that Abiola looted thereby introducing contractor scams and denying nigerians of a functional telecomunications service. The failed banks and wonder bank scams in the 80’s and 90’s were introduced by yorubas. Does anyone remember the Tafa Balogun? he was a monumentally corrupt and first inspector general of police in history to be jailed for looting 19 billion naira. Does anyone remember the importation of sand in place of fertilizers by yorubas? The list can go on and on to show that yorubas introduced pratically all the vices destroying the nation. |

Politics / BREAKING NEWS!!! 24 Oyo Lawmakers Sign Impeachment Plot Against Ajimobi, Speaker by hilomdave: 2:01pm On Jul 23, 2014 |
B-R-E-A-K-I-N-G News!! 24 Oyo Lawmakers Sign Impeachment Plot Against Ajimobi, Speaker ***Governor dangles N500m before lawmakers ***Mace taken to unknown location ***We’ll achieve our objective by end of August- PDP, APC, Accord lawmakers ***House on emergency recess, to resume August 28 Despite serial denials from the leadership and lily- livered members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, especially those who have profited from a regime of deceit, there is palpable plot to remove the Speaker, Alhaja Monsurat Sunmonu and Gov Ajimobi. The twin agenda is being spearheaded by lawmakers from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Accord Party (AP). APC has the majority in the Assembly with 18 members, while the PDP and Accord Party have 9 and 5 lawmakers respectively in the 32-member House. But NEWSLEAK can authoritatively report that 10 of the APC lawmakers have joined their counterparts in PDP and Accord to form a group of “seriously aggrieved” assemblymen. As of Sunday evening, the 24 lawmakers (10 APC, 9 PDP and 5 Accord) have all signed the impeachment plot and are holding meetings which venues they keep changing. To avert the looming removal, the Speaker, who made history as the first woman to hold the office in the state, has held a series of meetings with Governor Ajimobi on how to resolve the logjam. One of the options being considered is to dangle a sum of N500million before the aggrieved lawmakers to shelve the plan. But a source in government said the N500million was the annual statutory empowerment fund that the governor gives to the lawmakers to ensure they remain relevant in their constituencies. The source added that “with the situation of things now, Oga (Governor Ajimobi) may not have any option than to release the money to the lawmakers quickly” so as to abort the plan. He added that, contrary to insinuation that PDP and Accord leaders might be behind the plan, it was the governor who took the lawmakers for granted “resting on the docility and sheepish loyalty of the House to him.” The Speaker of the House, NEWSLEAK can reveal, on Sunday evening left the country for London onward Saudi Arabia for UMRAH lesser hajj. Her trip was originally scheduled for Friday evening. The Mace, which is the symbol of legislative without which no legislative proceeding, including the impeachment plan, can become legal and authoritative, has been moved to an unknown location. But some of the lawmakers spearheading the plot hinted that they have the end of August as deadline for the “successful implementation” of the agenda. The House, at plenary last Thursday, adjourned sitting to August 28 for the annual “working recess” of the lawmakers.— Vox Populi News |
Politics / APC Presidential Race: Atiku Dig In by hilomdave: 7:34pm On Jul 20, 2014 |
Buhari, Kwankwaso intensify lobby Despite the pervading lull occasioned by the Ramadan season, frontline presidential contenders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) are leaving nothing to chance in their bid to get the nod of the party to fly the party’s flag in next year’s elections. With eyes on the forthcoming national convention of the party, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who only joined the party six months ago has made tremendous inroads through benchmarking his wide network of contacts within and outside the party. Also high on the beat is former military Head of State and three- time presidential runner, Gen Mohammadu Buhari (retd) and Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso. While Buhari has already opened campaign offices in about 22 states evenly spread in the six geo-political zones, Kwankwaso has stepped up his consultative base, reaching out to influential power brokers within and outside the party. His consultations so far have been limited to the North where, Sunday Sun learnt, he plans to make his initial stronghold, through “endearing the APC and his person to the people.” As part of his strategic manoeuvre, he recently floated a survey poll to ascertain his popularity and chances of clinching the party ticket, against interested and tested heavyweights like Atiku and Buhari. While his relentless attacks on President Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have shored up his popularity in the party, he is said to be constrained by peer rivalry and limited geo-political vision. Most of the power players from the South, who would ordinarily have teamed up with him, are gradually withdrawing since the entry of Atiku into the race, and have indeed counseled on a mellowed anti-south sentiments in order to have a hitch-free victory. “His views on North-South issues are too strong for a man who wants to be presidential candidate of a national party. He needs to moderate these views and carry everyone along” Sunday Sun was told. Some of his arch-supporters who have apparently taken a reticent lukewarmness to his ambition include Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi, and former Kwara State Governor, Bukola Saraki. In fact Amaechi, who initially was positioned as his running mate has since re-aligned and has had extensive discussions with Atiku. Buhari’s presidential ambition in the party has never waned. The ex-military General has nurtured and dressed-up a close rapport and association with the power base of the party, fuelling speculations that the ticket is his, just for the asking. The burgeoning relationship with a leader of the party, and former Lagos governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been the source of multiple frictions in the party and in nuendoes of a Muslim/Muslim ticket plot. The lid to the plot blew open during and after the recent first national convention of the party. It has led to mass-disaffection with notable party stalwarts like former Borno State governor Alli Modu Sheriff, and ex-minister Femi Fani-Kayode defecting to the PDP. Suspicions of a pact between Buhari and Tinubu which paved the way for a rancour- free constitution of the National Executive of the party and zoning of elective offices have also elevated Buhari’s ambition while thwarting the interests of prospects. “He did not raise his finger against Tinubu’s imposition of officers. The duo also conspired to zone offices including elective ones to the zones that will match their interest. The fact that Buhari began opening offices and doing subtle campaign when others were yet to recover from the ripples of the convention is another pointer to their well-heeled plot,” Sunday Sun was told. Reacting to the development, spokesman of Atiku, Mallam Garba Shehu, while not denying emphatically that the Turakin Adamawa has opened offices and intensified consultations said, “Turakin has never left politics. There are always politicians around him. I don’t know if that is what people are referring to as consultations. On the issue of campaign offices, we only have an APC support office in Yola. I am not aware that there are other offices in other states.” He described the campaign posters, pairing Atiku with Amaechi, which have adorned some major streets in Abuja, Yola and Port- Harcourt as the handiwork of “mischievous people”. You know, sometimes people do some of these things to achieve certain selfish ends. If posters are to be printed, my office will see to it, and as I am talking to you now, we have not printed any.” Shehu also explained Atiku’s role in the zoning of elective offices and emergence of national officers of the party at the last convention. The former vice-president allegedly refrained from interfering with the methods that propped up the zoning and substantive national officers and has since remained indifferent despite rife speculations about his frontline presidential aspiration status. “My principal allowed the fowls to have their pick, and they did. No one is rattled. Turakin is a firm believer in democracy and its ideals. The presidential ticket has been zoned to the North. That is the battlefield,” Shehu explained. Calculations within the party are pointing towards an upset. The general belief is that of a likelihood of a Buhari/Tinubu candidature, but there are also conjectures that Atiku may cause an upset because of the perception that he has what it takes to give President Goodluck Jonathan and his PDP a good run. Those who are inclined to this, cite his political astuteness, and how he snatched the Northern consensus ticket ahead of acknowledged bigwigs including General Ibrahim Babangida (retd), Buhari, and General Aliyu Gusau (retd) in 2010. Meanwhile, the three presidential aspirants have been linked to some faceless motley groups within the party drumming support for their aspirations. One of the groups, “National Support Initiative” in a statement last week canvassed support for Kwankwaso’s presidential ambition, describing him “as a patriot and selfless leader.” The Turaki Vanguard similarly is in the forefront of the former vice-president’s ambition. The group, led by N’dua Wakado earlier last month enunciated his sterling qualities and pre-qualification for the exalted seat. “He is detribalized, visionary, courageous and an unrivalled philanthropist. He deserves the ticket of the party and the exalted seat of the president,” the statement said. On the issue of presidential running mate, while Tinubu is believed to be in near-full grasp of it, the outgoing Ekiti State governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi is being positioned as a fall back in case Tinubu’s candidacy fails to pull through. Fayemi’s name has dwarfed other fringe contenders since the June 21 catastrophic governorship elections in Ekiti State. Since the position has been zoned to the South- west generally presumed as the biggest stronghold of the APC, other aspirants like the Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, and ex-Abia State governor and former national chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, may have re-adjusted their interests in line with the party policy. There is a perceptible freeze in their wide consultations across the length and breadth of the country since the last convention. Okorocha, who initially wanted to fly the flag of the party, necessitating his controversial defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) later modified his ambition for a vice- presidential slot. He had engaged in a whirlwind campaign criss-crossing the nation, meeting influential Emirs, colleague- governors and other eminent leaders of thought within and outside the party. He had hoped to leverage on his position as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum. He had also in the pursuit of this goal awarded monumental contracts covering roads, and buildings to many contractors of Northern extraction in his state, turning Owerri into the mecca of Northerners. Amaechi, Sunday Sun learnt, still has an outside chance of getting the ticket, owing to his iconic doggedness, passion, courage and enduring political wiles. In fact he is perceived in APC circles as having done more than any of his contem poraries in popularizing APC nationwide. |
Politics / Low Turnout, Opposition Mar Ekiti Referendum by hilomdave: 7:23pm On Jul 20, 2014 |
The controversial referendum embarked upon by Governor Kayode Fayemi’s administration for the creation of additional 18 Local Council Development Areas was marred yesterday with low turnout by the communities that participated, while others boycotted the exercise completely. In Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, apathy to the referendum organised by the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC) was evident, just as only a few people came out in Ikere-Ekiti, another major town in the state. EKSIEC Chairman, Mrs Cecilia Adelusi, confirmed that there was no voting in Ilasa, Osi and Igbole, as the people blocked the roads and prevented the exercise from holding. In Ado-Ekiti, at Ward 11, where at least people from 15 polling units were expected to vote, only 118 people came out; just as only 66 people came out for the exercise at St. George’s Primary School. A Supervisor at St. Thomas Primary School, Irona, Ado- Ekiti, Mr. Akinluyi Alabi, told newsmen who witnessed the exercise that it was peaceful. The Ekiti SIEC boss, said her attempt to enter Osi and Igbole to monitor the exercise was aborted by the people who did not allow her vehicle to enter the towns. Apart from the areas mentioned by the SIEC boss, the exercise did not hold also in Afao, Are, Iworoko in Irepodun/ Ifelodun Local Government Area. Also, the exercise did not hold in Ire (Oye Local Government), Agbado in Gboyin Local Government Area among others. In Ijero, the traditional ruler, Oba Adebayo Adewole, had to make public announcement that the people were not pleased with the government’s action, saying his people demanded for Ijero North and South Local Governments. The same scenario played out in Erinmope, where the people said they were opposed to the exercise due to the location of the council headquarters in Igogo-Ekiti. However, the exercise recorded an appreciable turnout of people in Iyin and Igbemo both in Irepodun/ Ifelodun Local Government Area. In Ikere-Ekiti, the Commissioner for Integration, who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Funminiyi Afuye, said the issue was beyond politics. According to him, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), that is opposed to the referendum needed not to support it. “Whoever is opposed to the referendum should go out and test his popularity with the people. The wishes of the people can be expressed at any time and on any subject. “This is the policy of the APC government and we are implementing it to the letter. We are still in government until October 15 this year,” Afuye said. Meanwhile, the PDP, in a statement by the State Publicity Secretary, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, blamed the poor turnout of people on the insincerity of the outgoing government. He noted that most of the supposed beneficiary communities knew ab-initio that the whole process of creating the LCDAs was shrouded in controversy as a result of the contentious constitutional validity of the exercise. The PDP spokesman added that some also distanced themselves from the exercise due to fear of molestation and possible attacks by thugs who were brought to Ekiti State by the leadership of the APC to boost security for the EKSIEC and attack members of any opposition party or community. |
Politics / APC Vows To Stop Sacking Of Its Govs by hilomdave: 4:37pm On Jul 20, 2014 |
Disturbed by the impeachment of its governors, the opposition All Progressives Congress has vowed to take every available legal option to stop illegal impeachment of its governors. The party on Friday said despite the penchant of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to flout court orders and act with impunity, the APC being a firm believer in the rule of law, would continue to seek redress in the court of law. It was learnt that leaders of the party agreed to challenge the sacking of the former Adamawa State Governor, Admiral Murtala Nyako, whom they said was impeached in defiance of a subsisting court order. The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, confirmed this in a telephone interview with SUNDAY PUNCH . He said “All we can do is to take the matter to the court of public opinion as we have done. This country belongs to all of us; we are going to use every legal and constitutional means available to us to stop this invasion of our constitution. “We have in recent times drawn the attention of Nigerians and friends of the country to this menace and the likely consequences. “We are challenging some of these actions in court, what is more worrisome to us is that even when you win in court, they treat it with levity. He said reports of mind-boggling amounts of money allegedly being given to lawmakers to facilitate the removal of APC governors must not be swept under the carpet. The party also said the use of the military to perform purely civilian or police functions was weakening the military and threatening the overall stability of the nation. Mohammed said Nyako’s impeachment was a sad commentary on the character of the legislators behind the impeachment. In response, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Adamu Kamale, challenged anyone who had any evidence of wrongdoing against the House to make such public. He said “Are they saying the 20 allegations levelled against the former governor are not true? “If what we are saying that he diverted a huge amount of money belonging to Adamawa State for personal use is untrue, are they also saying that it is not true, that he drafted his family and friends into the affairs of government ? Why did the former governor not appear before the panel to defend himself? Let them answer these questions.” |
Politics / Tension In Oyo As Lawmaker In Move To Unseat Gov. Abiola Ajumobi by hilomdave: 4:10pm On Jul 20, 2014 |
In Oyo State, the fear of the possible impeachment of Governor Abiola Ajimobi heightened last week with a series of secret political moves by members of the state House of Assembly. The development in Oyo is coming just as one of our correspondents gathered that there was apprehension in Borno State over the rumoured defection of the former Governor of the state, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff, to the Peoples Democratic Party. There are fears the defection might ignite a political crisis in the state. In Oyo, a source told one of our correspondents in confidence that, at least, 24 House members had been meeting secretly and that more members were being wooed to join the group. He said 10 legislators from the APC had joined the 14 other legislators from the PDP and AP and that they were holding secret meetings on the modalities to impeach either the governor or the speaker, Monsurat Sumonu. The House has 32 members with the All Progressives Congress having 18 members; Peoples Democratic Party nine; while the Accord Party, which had seven, now has five members. The source said, “The House has been calm because the speaker is dancing to the governor’s tune. Once she is removed, the new Speaker can go ahead to implement the impeachment plan. But the problem is that the group has yet to agree on who will be the next Speaker. For the PDP to have that power, it must improve on its present figure in the house. I am aware that it is being worked on with a move to woo AP legislators and possibly some APC legislators in the house,” he said. Signs early in the week that impeachment plans were being hatched were denied by the majority leader of the House, Oyeniyi Akande. Speaking on behalf of the 18 APC members during an emergency press conference, Akande said a report that APC members were part of a meeting held with the PDP and Accord last weekend could not stand the test of time. He said, “I am using this period to debunk that statement that APC members were part of that meeting; they were not part of that meeting at all, none of our members was in that meeting. I am saying it categorically that we are solidly behind our governor, Ajimobi, beyond 2015. We have the positive opinion that he is going to win the second term election.” The minority leader in the house, Rafiu Adekunle, however said that some members of the ruling APC were part of the meeting, and that for safety reasons, he would not give their names. “For political reasons, no member of APC can boldly come out and affirm my claim publicly. Let me tell you emphatically, immediately after plenary, four other members signified their readiness to associate with the project.” On Tuesday, a release signed by all APC members where they denied holding any meeting with a group was issued. This was a confirmation of the source’s claim which also backed the fact that there was an impeachment fear in the state. The Chairman of APC in the state, Mr. Akin Oke, told our correspondent that he did not envisage an impeachment move in the state, confirming that the party’s members in the house were made to pledge their support to the governor. He said, “This era of impeachment is not good for our democracy. If a governor’s achievement is not satisfactory after three years in government, why not wait till the next election to remove him through the electorate? Instead of sponsoring legislators to remove governors, the electorate should be allowed to decide that. “In Oyo State or anywhere in the South-West, it is not possible to remove our governors. The 18 legislators in Oyo have come out to deny meeting legislators from the PDP and AP. It shows that such a move will not be welcome in Oyo. Ajimobi and the legislators have always enjoyed a good relationship so why should there be fear over his impeachment?” asked the chairman. But the PDP chairman in the state, Yinka Taiwo, told our correspondent on Friday that there were six APC lawmakers holding talks with the PDP on how to move to the party. “The minority leader who is a PDP member in the house is handling the matter. I am aware that six APC lawmakers in the house are talking with him. They said they were not happy with the APC and are eager to join the PDP. We are considering their proposal,” he said. In Borno State, some political observers argued that the defection of Modu-Sheriff, the estranged godfather of the present governor, Kashim Shettima, would make it easy for the ruling PDP to effect the removal of the governor. Already, the former governor has three members of the House of Representatives, AbdulRahman Terab, Peter Biye and Lawan Isa, who are set to move with him to the new party. Though many of the members of the House of Assembly have not come out to associate openly with the former governor, they are suspected to be holding secret talks with him and may move with him to the PDP. The permission given by the presidency to the former governor to land at the Maiduguri International Airport, which has been closed to all manner of flights for over two weeks, some observers have noted, is a pointer to the extent that the PDP will empower the ex-governor to upturn the political balance in the state. The thinking is that with what happened in Adamawa State where the governor was removed and in Nasarawa, where the governor has been served with notice of impeachment, many believe Borno may be in the radar of the President and the PDP for a similar treatment. But a member of the state House of Assembly, who spoke under anonymity, said Borno lawmakers would not mete out the same treatment to Shettima, saying, “He has been nice to us and we see ourselves as part and parcel of this administration. We have never had any major crisis under this dispensation and why now?” The lawmaker said the current chairman of the APC in the state, Hon. Bukar Ali Dalori, was a member of the Assembly. “So, why should we betray such trust and go with the opposition who can never be trusted.” Another respected politician in the state, who did not want his name in print, said, “2015 is still a long way away and if Sheriff brings enough money from Abuja, he could destabilise the system and even move for the governor’s impeachment.” A top aide to Shettima, who would not have his name in print, said, “The issue of impeachment doesn’t arise in Borno State. The issue will only be a distraction and the governor is focused on delivering on his promises to the people of Borno State.” He added, “Of course, you know that unlike what obtained in Adamawa, a PDP lawmaker in Borno State defected to APC. The State chairman was from the State Assembly, all of these confirm the level of cohesion between the two arms, and it will be difficult to change this.” |
Politics / Apc Vs Pdp by hilomdave: 1:59pm On Jul 20, 2014 |
PDP vs APC, scoreline 2-2. 1st goal by APC, massive defection by some PDP lawmakers at the Green Chamber, thus giving APC a temporary majority. Goal-2, Emergence of Sanusi as Emir of Kano against Jonathan and his cohorts wish. Just about 2 minutes before the end of 1st half (June), APC secured a corner kick which was taken by Governor Fayemi, this was nodded out of 18 yard box and the trio of the Minister of State Defence (Obanikoro), Minister of Police Affairs (Adeshiyan) and Jonathan got APC on the counter and looped the ball to Ayo Fayose who fired a 16m/s (16 local govts) shot to put the scoreline at 2-2. Barely 2 minutes into the 2nd half, APC skipper Governor Nyako fouled the PDP dominated state assembly. For getting 2 (impeachment notices, the first one he got years back which he survived) yellow cards in a match(i.e as a governor), the centre referee, vex awarded a red card for bringing down the last man at goal. The penalty was converted and this put PDP on the lead: 3-2. Defender Tanko Almakura in his bid to clear the ball out of danger held the ball by hand in the 18 yard box. The ref. (Nasarawa House) has just awarded a penalty kick. Will Labaran Maku convert the kick? Remember APC sharp shooter Gov. Aregbe is seriously marked by Senator Omisore. Will Aregbe manouver his way past him? What should APC master tactician,Tinubu do to change the game? Only time will tell; but I see a 4-3 scoreline in favour PDP. |
