EducationThe Chemist And The Chemistrical (sorry chemical) Engineer. Friends Or Foes? by hischoice(op):
There is hardly any pair of disciplines, one from the sciences and the other engineering, which ever enjoyed a feud this long as that between students, teachers and professionals in the fields of chemistry and chemical engineering. Their day to day activities causes several shoulder brushing, many literature written to compare both disciplines, battles have been fought, unfortunately, a no-win situation recorded always.

I saw a very good article on this subject on a Nigerian Engineering forum and I thought to share. Both funny and educative.

Industrial chemistry is quite a good course with a wide range of core possible career paths. You work anywhere Chemical Engineers work. From your post, sounds like you just about to choose Industrial Chemistry as a course. Please, go ahead. The drive you need however will come from people (professionals) in that field of which a forum like this may not offer. Discuss with Industrial chemists across Nigeria on dedicated forums. I recommend www.engineer-ng.net. Sign-up with them and get your passion ignited.

@ Oremisussan, the problem is not as bad as you make it look. I have contacts at The Electroplating workshop of The Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO). They are there to help. Can I have your email. I will send you details and a ready-made final year project write up on a similar topic. "STUDY OF PLATING PRE-TREATMENTS AND TEMPERATURE AND ON THE SUBSTRATES LUSTRE"
CareerRe: Future Of The Nigerian Engineer by hischoice(m): 12:41pm On Apr 10, 2012
My engineering training experiences were more bizarre. My Alma mater had machines and apparatus with big 'DO NOT TOUCH' tags hanging over them. We only saw but never touched (let alone operate). I feel sorry for myself.

Maybe we should use this thread for sharing our ordeals while in our various schools training as engineers.
EducationEngineering Students. Discuss Your Projects Here. by hischoice(op): 10:58am On Apr 10, 2012

While I encourage us to use this particular thread, I am not ignorant of thread hijackers who's presence in no time might make this thread lose its essence. So for a more speedy response, you may visit www.engineer-ng.net. Click on the Discuss a Project tab and post your challenges. There are pool of professionals and students like you who would like to help. You would be surprised how much help you get.
CareerEngineer For 'nigereer' by hischoice(op): 10:07am On Apr 10, 2012
Apart from a few self tutored individuals who have let loose their minds to help solve problems peculiar to the Nigerian society, how many Nigerian engineering graduates can boast of being a Nigeria’s problem solver?

To say Nigeria’s problem today is nuclear power generation will be hyper-tasking the already ill-equipped engineer. Focusing solely on power generation has left many other problems unattended to. Leaving the issue of power totally, as issues bordering around it are just as much (if not more) political as technical incompetence, there are simple problems facing the man on the street other than gigantic national challenges. These problems are simple and as such require simple solutions. Simple solutions which have been overlooked in our engineers training processes.

Our engineers while in training are so lost in the euphoria of solving complex mathematical problems that on graduation can’t be trusted enough to (just) neatly weld leaving us to import those metal shades at our traffic junctions. The ankle length made in China rain boots no longer fit for use in our thigh reaching floods. Literacy level in Nigeria hasn’t risen quite much since they (the engineers) left for school and so we wouldn’t mind having a smart phone that understands pidgin English. These are only a few challenges many Nigeria made Engineers can help with while we wait to have the mystery behind power generation unraveled.

Readers, while I encourage you to participate actively in channeling a way forward, I do employ you to mention skills a typical Nigerian engineering graduate should possess to be a part of Nigeria’s problem solvers.

I am a member of an internet based Nigerian Engineering Network. A meeting point for Nigerian engineers in the Diaspora, the industry and the academia. Membership is free. Just register following this link www.engineer-ng.net. Exciting engineering articles are published, school and work projects discussed and engineering jobs also advertised.
