Many of us had to dodge our heads on Tuesday here on Nairaland going by the amount of curses and name callings flying over the thread which supposedly was to report the ceremony marking the commencement of rail track construction on the Lagos-Badagry expressway. Everything looked new, CCECC workers (both Nigerians and Chinese) looked serious and ready to "explode" into action once the Governor said START!

It's however not to be as 72 hours after Fashola left, not only has CCECC not started anything yet, they have covered that fine blue light train with tarpaulin. That place is back to default.

Heard the Governor said June. Lagos waits.

Which opens more doors to economic activities?

PoliticsRailtrack Construction Commencement Ceremony On The Lagos-b'dgry Expressway Pics by hischoice(op): 3:51am On Jan 08, 2013
Today, the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola will be at Orile, site of the first terminus of the 10 Lane Lagos-Badagry expressway to oversee the ceremony marking the commencement of the Rail track work, which in design, is to run through the middle of the 10 lanes pushing 5 lines each to its right and its left.

In preparation for the Governor’s visit, a 200 meter “dummy” rail track has been laid on site. It is speculated that a small train placed on the track is expected to journey the Governor through the track length.

The China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) has been appointed as the contractor for the construction of the first line (Blue). The contract includes the basic design and construction of the rail infrastructure. The CCECC is constructing the Blue Line in two phases. The first phase includes the National Theatre to Mile 2 section, while the second phase includes the Mile 2 to Okokomaiko section.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, at a briefing in July 2012, assured that Governor Babatunde Fashola’s administration would bequeath to residents a first-class transnational 58.425 km highway by 2015.

ProgrammingInterview With Team UNILAG - Google Apps Contest Winner. by hischoice(op): 12:17pm On Dec 18, 2012
Google, in November 2012 presented Bolutife Ogunsola, Michael Adeyeri and Willie Aniebiet a cheque of $20,000 for creating the Form+ application software; an interface that creates application forms by just dragging and dropping components. The user can create forms – such as curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé submission forms for businesses and coursework submission page for lecturers.

Speaking for Team UNILAG in an exclusive interview with The Engineering Network, a member of the three-man team, Michael Adeyeri, right in picture, explains the concept behind the award winning application, the team work edge and living with and feeding from apps development.

What's your motivation in the science of apps development?
We all studied engineering because we love to create. App development is just one of the ways (and actually an accessible one) of expressing a flare for creation.

Educate us on the architecture of the Form+ app, tell us about the language of coding and give us a quick sweep through the algorithm?
Form+ back-end is written in Python programming language and it runs on Google App Engine.
Form+ Frontend: Javascript, HTML5, CSS
We used a couple of Google APIs too, e.g, The Google Drive API, URL Shortner API, and so on

How long did it take you to deliver, what challenges did you meet en-route delivery and how did you overcome them?
We worked on the application (at different rates though, due to school work) throughout the stretch of the competition up until the last minute of submission,
We had 3 to 4 all weekend "hackathon".
The major challenges we faced was getting familiar with the Google platform (Drive API) and ease of testing in the face of poor internet connectivity, I can remember it took about 2 hours to deploy the last set of changes

Why have a team/synergy to develop an app? Any advantage over handling the project in solo?
Well, I ll like to say we won’t have been able to achieve this without contributions from everybody, for instance our awesome tutorial video.
People have different inclinations/specialty. I prefer back-end for instance, doesn't mean I can handle front-end but we left that for the person who is stronger in that area. The advantage of having a team is the improved overall quality of the application produced.

Coding as a means of self-employment in Nigeria, how viable is it?
Software Development is actually viable as a means of self employment. One of the advantages of the internet is that it opens one up to the global market (which is really big). Also, you don't have to restrict development for a local market (i.e. solving problems for a relatively slow local market). Sridhar Vembu successfully created Zoho, a global cloud software comapny from the stables of India. Nigeria doesn't seem to me to be intrinsically disadvantaged in the creation of a software company

The future of computing is gradually moving mobile. How ready do you think Nigerian developers are ready for the enormous challenge ahead?
I think Nigerian developers are already taking advantage of the mobile arena. Interesting applications are being developed by Nigerians. AfriNolly is an excellent example, it won the Android development by Google last year and is currently on all mobile platforms. Danfo is also an excellent game on the Nokia platform developed by Nigerians.

Any inherent traits in a person that point to the fact that he would make an excellent app developer? (Are apps developers born or made?)
I think a necessary trait for a software developer (and indeed any form of engineer) is perseverance. It usually takes time and effort to create solutions and during this time it might seem as though nothing is happening.
One of my mentors taught me the process concept.
No matter how difficult a task is, try to have at it. On your journey to the goal, there are a lot of skills you'll pick up on the way that you won't even realize.
So, in the end, it's not the goal that really matters, it's the journey.

Advice for would-be developers
Practice Practice Practice. Practice makes perfect. Stay abreast of what's happening in the Tech Space. Be consistent and you need perseverance and most importantly, adopt the process concept described above.

Where does Team UNILAG go from here?
A successful software development firm, our first product FORM+ (www.formpl.us)

PoliticsRe: People Jam-packed In A Lagos BRT Bus (Pics) by hischoice(op): 3:32pm On Aug 31, 2012
@all, I am not against having standees on BRT buses (there should be, being a mass transit option), what I have a problem with is erring on the side of the allowable number of standees in a bus. Things get so compressed in there that people resolve to sitting on the plastic gear box cover beside the driver.
The Engineer in me thinks this is not safe. Rush hours at BRT stations doesn't mean there are lesser number of buses on ground, greed only make officers mount people on top of themselves before the bus leaves station.
Those "Oyinbo" bus pictures posted are not jam-packed. You need to look at those BRT bus pictures again. I still think it is inhumane.
Thanks all

@kunleKunle @NairaLanders,

Thanks for sharing those videos. But not even one of them depicts the theme “happiness” or even “indifference”. They all show how much danger is waiting to happen when humans are that packed.

That wrongs are being done everywhere in the world does not make them right here in Nigeria!
Rush hours abound in every large city in the world, agreed but Lagos’s case is peculiar, the buses are there lined up behind the one “loading”, BRT officers just won’t let another start loading until one is filled to the brim. It is a different story if there are no buses on ground. Even at that though, safety should be paramount first. What if…?

One Subaway train transports 500,000 people (just a number from the blues) because it was designed to transport that number. If a BRT bus moves, 107 persons when it is designed for 106, accidents are just waiting to happen.

Please, look the third picture again, the young man has earphone plugged in while standing right behind that door which it’s opening and closing is controlled by the pilot. If he snaps it opened for an alighting passenger, that young man is pressed in.
From the forgoing, nothing justifies this wicked treatment of Lagosians. Even if everyone in the world does it, we can set a new standard. Of course, we have done so in time past. Eko o ni baje o

geeez: If its about the standing, I can tell you for free that it happens even in the most advanced countries. What the heck do you think the handrails are there for? To hang pants and bras?
Of course, hand hangers are for standees but the hangers are numbered, equivalent to number of possible standees. Most standing passengers in this picture don't have a hanger to use. You can see them again please. Good still, read the article OP attached.

Seun: - the common man prefers cheaper fares to comfort.
- most people would rather stand in a bus than be stranded at a bus stop.
No Seun, it is not about what the common man wants, it is about the February 2007 promise of the Lagos State Governor...Lagos BRT - "delivering a high level of convenience in public transport”. Operators have thrown that to the wind. It is now money first (only!).

Lagos BRT, Is This What The Governor Had In Mind?

These are pictures taken in a Lagos BRT bus en route CMS from Ajah.
It is now a commonplace at earlier morning rush and closing hours to see how Lagosians are jam-packed in these buses without health and safety considerations of passengers.
Worse is that, officers/"ticketters" will not give an all-clear to the "pilot" (that is what they call their drivers) until people are this pressed together.
By, the way, I picked the pictures from this website http://go.engineer-ng.net/profiles/blogs/lagos-brt-one-two-many-flaws. They have an article that vehemently criticize this inhumane treatment. I encourage everyone to visit, share on Twitter and Facebook. Let's take this to the Governor!
