Business / Access Bank To Merge With Diamond Bank by hnworisa(m): 9:47am On Dec 17, 2018
Rumours of a potential merger deal surfaced a few weeks back to the shock of the investing community. However, both banks issued statements denying that any merger talks were ongoing. Despite the denials, people familiar with the transaction inform Nairametrics that the deal was never off the table and had been going on for weeks. Both sides had already facilitated the presence of a due diligence team from one of the big three audit firms.

According to a source, a board meeting was held over the weekend approving the merger terms after weeks of negotiations surrounding several aspects of the transaction. Both banks are now expected to formally seek a shareholder agreement before applying for the approval of the CBN and Securities & Exchange Commission.

Science/Technology / Facebook Reveals Users' Phone Number May Be Used To Target Ads by hnworisa(m): 8:35am On Sep 28, 2018
Facebook on Thursday confirmed that advertisers were privy to phone numbers given by members of the social network for enhanced security.

A study by two US universities, first reported by news website Gizmodo, found that phone numbers given to Facebook for two-factor authentication were also used to target advertising.

Two-factor authentication is intended to enhance security by requiring a second step, such as entering codes sent via text messages, as well as passwords to get into accounts.

Phone numbers added to profiles, for security purposes, or for messaging were potential fodder for advertisers, according to the study.

"These findings hold despite all the relevant privacy controls on our test accounts being set to their most private settings," researchers said in the study, which looked at ways advertisers can get personally identifying information (PII) from Facebook or its WhatsApp and Messenger services.

Contact lists uploaded to Facebook platforms could be mined for personal information, meaning that people could unintentionally help advertisers target their friends.

"Most worrisome, we found that phone numbers uploaded as part of syncing contacts – that were never owned by a user and never listed on their account – were in fact used to enable PII-based advertising," researchers said in the study.

The study supported concerns that Facebook uses "shadow" sources of data not given to the social network for the purpose of sharing to make money on advertising.

"We use the information people provide to offer a better, more personalized experience on Facebook, including ads," a spokeswoman said in response to an AFP inquiry about the study findings.

"We are clear about how we use the information we collect, including the contact information that people upload or add to their own accounts."

Facebook is grappling with the worst crisis in its history, vilified for not more zealously guarding the information that users share.

The Silicon Valley-based internet colossus faced intense global scrutiny over the mass harvesting of personal data by Cambridge Analytica, a British political consultancy that worked for Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign.

The company has admitted up to 87 million users may have had their data hijacked in the scandal. – https://www.naijacolumn.com.ng/2018/09/facebook-admits-users-phone-number-may.html

Phones / Pixel 3 XL Constant Leaks Maintains Phone’s Popularity by hnworisa(m): 8:25am On Sep 28, 2018
The Pixel 3 XL is perhaps one of the worst leaked smartphones in recent history that it has almost become a joke in tech circles. It has also cast some suspicion on whether Google is intentionally misleading people through what could be the most elaborate and most convoluted pre-launch marketing stunt in the market's history. With so many leaked photos and even hands-on videos of the smartphone, what's the harm in having one more? You asked for it, Russia delivers. With love.

Truth be told, there is nothing new from Rozetked's "hands-on" video that we haven't exactly seen before. Even the YouTuber makes reference to the countless leaks for the Pixel 3 XL out there already. In fact, the video does little hands-on and more talking about the narrative behind the Pixel 3 XL's notorious "features".

Yes, they're talking about the "bucket" notch yet again, perhaps the smartphone's biggest, or only, flaw. Presuming it is indeed there. Again, some have cast doubts on that possibility because of how ridiculous the number of leaks has become. If it's there though, expect people to raise hell about it. And then still buy the phone anyway.

That's mostly because Google's Pixel phones have traditionally had great cameras. Well, singular, which is still the case for the Pixel 3 XL One thing the video does note has changed is that the phone now wobbles when placed on a flat surface.

Phones / Whatsapp Introduces Out Group Calling For Voice And Video by hnworisa(m): 3:19pm On Aug 03, 2018
Source: https://www.naijacolumn.com.ng/2018/08/whatsapp-rolls-out-group-calling-for.html

Popular messaging app WhatsApp has announced a new exciting feature, group calling for video and voice. The feature puts it head to head with Skype and other audio and video conferencing apps. WhatsApp wrote:

Over the last couple years, people have enjoyed making voice and video calls on WhatsApp. In fact, our users spend over 2 billion minutes on calls per day. We're excited to announce that group calls for voice and video are coming to WhatsApp starting today.
You can make a group call with up to four people total - anytime and anywhere. Just start a one-on-one voice or video call and tap the new "add participant" button in the top right corner to add more contacts to the call.
Group calls are always end-to-end encrypted, and we've designed calling to work reliably around the world in different network conditions. The feature is currently rolling out on the iPhone and Android versions of our app.

Phones / Jumia Treasure Hunt, Scam Or Not? by hnworisa(m): 4:24pm On Jul 25, 2018
You'll know the Jumia Treasure Hunt right? Well if you don't visit this link -> https://www./treasure-hunt

Jumia claims to have hidden their best selling items in odd categories on their sites with a 99% discount.
Eg: an iPhone X going for #3500 hidden in the Televisions category.

After searching for several hours to no avail. I closed the jumia app to reopen it an hour or two later and boom! the item is there but there's a twist, it was already sold out. This happened to me during the washing machine & iPhone search.

So I took to Facebook and Twitter to see the reactions of other users and I wasn't pleased as 90% believe it's a scam.
So what do you think is, scam or not?

tl;dr: is Jumia Treasure Hunt a scam or not?

Globacom is one of the Nigeria's telecom operators delivering affordable service to Nigerians. But the sad truth is that Glo has the poorest network coverage in Nigeria. Many Nigerians migrate to Glo to enjoy the cheap data plans but later on return to their "mother telco".

How Glo is censoring your browsing

Glo whether purposefully or not denies it subscribers access to blogs hosted on Google's blogging platform, Blogger making use of custom domains.

Ever wondered why you couldn't access naijacolumn.com.ng or naijatechguy.com when you were browsing with your Glo sim here's why.

The only way to go about this restriction is to make use of VPNs or proxy browsers like Opera mini(with data savings on extreme mode).

This restriction affects thousands of blogs worldwide. Even foreign blogs are affected.

Webmasters / Globacom: A Bloggers Nightmare by hnworisa(m): 10:54pm On Jul 23, 2018
It's a well known fact in Nigeria's blogging community that Glo subscribers are unable to visit blogs hosted on Google's blogging platform, Blogger making use of custom domains.

Most blog owners on Glo use VPNs to access their blogs but what about other potential readers on Glo network they are denied access to this information.
This leads to drops in traffic thereby shortening the blog owner's income.

I think it's time for bloggers to rise up and draw Glo's attention to this big mess.

Kindly write a post on your blog about this issue and share share share. Let's inform the public that their 'amazing' ISP is censoring their browsing.

Webmasters / How Reliable Is Trudigits? (no Adverts Please) by hnworisa(m): 1:03pm On Jun 22, 2018
Want to host a website. Already bought the domain from Whogohost I wanted to get hosting from Whogohost too but then found out about Trudigits and my oh my, they are incredibly cheap. Now I want to know if Trudigits is as "reliable" as Whogohost? I don't want to have regrets later.

Also if it's reliable how much does their domain transfer cost
