SSANU ASKS FG TO RESPECT AGREEMENT! . . . SOURCE: Channelstv... News Strike |
The meeting between the Federal Government of Nigeria and striking University lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has ended in a stalemate. The meeting began at 2:40pm on Monday and ended at 3:30am Tuesday with either side of the negotiating team not yielding grounds sufficient enough to re-open the Nation’s Universities which have remained under lock and key for five months and running. Our correspondent in the Capital City of Abuja who kept vigil outside the Villa alongside other newsmen, reports that the Representatives of ASUU to the dialogue with the Federal Government avoided the press as they exited the First Lady’s Conference Room in the State House, where the 13 hour long meeting was held. One of the representatives of the University Union told Ekekeee; “Nothing concrete was agreed. Same old story. We’ll report back to our State Chapters and members and decide our next line of action”. The representatives of the Federal Government led by President Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo, SGF, Anyim Pius Anyim and the Chief of Staff to the President, Mike Oghiadome, also kept mum and wore long faces as they filed out of the building–an indication that there is no end in sight to the lingering impasse at the moment. The University lecturers are asking the Federal Government to honour an agreement it freely entered into with ASUU in 2009 (implementation of the 2009 agreement, the 2012 MoU and the recommendations of the Needs Assessment Report) before they can make a return to the classrooms. The November 4th meeting between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and the President started first with the Senate president David Mark. In his statement, he introduced that he was asked by the president to meet with ASUU as the intervention was to sort out problems that has long kept our student out of school. He continued by saying that the FG have begged ASUU to go back to school while they (the government) sort out the problems amicably. One of the ASUU Members in the meeting told our correspondent while on break that members of the ASUU are not just lecturers but a government of their own and would not be intimidate by any body. We are fighting for the future of our dear students and nation urging the federal government to implement the agreement that was signed since 2009. It was still gathered that as meeting between the Senate president ended around 6.00 pm without conclusion the president himself broke in and is now in another closed door meeting with ASUU saying that the strike must end today. Let’s wait and see what the final conclusion will look like. |

The Nigerian Consulate in New York has confirmed the death of Former Chief of General Staff, Vice Admiral Mike Akhigbe. He passed on in a New York hospital Monday evening. It was gathered that the 68-year-old Akhigbe was surrounded by his wife, children, and their spouses when he lost the battle to throat- cancer. According to the Consulate, plans were being made with the deceased’s family on how to convey his corpse back to the country for interment. The late Akhigbe, until his death was the second in command at the Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC), headed by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, a position that made him the Military Vice- President in the regime that preceded the return to democracy in 1999. He also attended the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Royal Naval School of Maritime Operations Dryad, Southwick the United Kingdom, Command and Staff College Jaji, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru and University of Poitiers, Rouan, France. Akhigbe was earlier reported to have died on Sunday by some online media but the Nigerian Navy on Monday asked the public to disregard the story. source: http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/10/29/nigerian-consulate-in-new-york-confirms-akhigbes-death/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=nigerian-consulate-in-new-york-confirms-akhigbes-death |
