The Ogun State commissioner of police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, on Monday warned politicians, groups or individuals who are in possession of illegal arms and ammunition, advising them to come forward and turn them in to the police headquarters Eleweran Abeokuta within 14 days or face the wrath of the law. He said ,whoever, was caught in possession of such illegal arms after the 14-day ultimatum would be arrested and prosecuted. Okoye who addressed journalists in his office on issues bordering on security and the 2015 general elections, also paraded three armed robbery suspects and one fake major. The police boss also warned those who drive unregistered cars or ride unregistered motorcycles to desist from such action, as the command would clamp down on them. While he advised those in possession of such vehicles and motorcycles to registered them with relevant agencies, he added that politicians or their loyalists were not permitted to use unauthorised number plates. He said, “The command has observed with dismay the way and manner some individuals and groups acquire/ possess arms illegally in Ogun State. “This is not acceptable to the command. I call on those who have acquired their arms illegally to come forward and submit such to the commissioner of police within 14 days of this warning, or else anyone caught in possession of such arms will face the full wrath of the law.” Okoye said no one was permitted to possess any offensive weapon at any particular time or election venue. He said, “I want to warn politicians and their followers to always play the game according to the rules. The command will not tolerate any act of political thuggery, hooliganism or violence before, during and after the general elections. “The command will work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies and stakeholders in ensuring that we have free, fair and credible elections in the state.” Meanwhile, the command paraded a 17-year-old Beninoise Wilben Kende, who robbed one Gbadebo Taiwo of his motorcycle at Owode Egba, at gun point. His accomplice Woti Usa, is still at large. The police recovered from him the motorcycle, one locally made pistol and one live cartridge. Two other suspects, Fidelis Sunday and Okechukwu Ibie, were also paraded for allegedly robbing one Eghosa Omofonmuvan, a driver of a DAF truck loaded with electronics headed for Onitsha at J4 area of Ore-Lagos Expressway, Ogbere and diverted the goods worth N3.1m to other places. The fourth suspect paraded was one Afolabi Hassan, a dismissed captain from the army was arrested for impersonation. He wore army camouflage, with the rank of a major. culled from pungng.com |
