The Health Minister, Dr Haliru Alhassan, has raised the fear over a likely resurgence of Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria. He spoke on the occasion marking the upgrading of Federal Medical Centre , Ido Ekiti, to a Federal Teaching Hospital and the signing of Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Government and Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, on Saturday. Expressing worry over the nationwide strike embarked upon by the Joint Health Staff Union, the minister said Nigeria was not free from Ebola as long as there were reported cases of the deadly virus in any part of the world. Alhassan, who appealed to all concerned to sustain the leadership role of President Goodluck Jonathan in tackling the deadly disease, said the indefinite strike action embarked upon by JOHESU at a time when many Nigerians would return home from abroad to celebrate Christmas and New Year, could threaten the success achieved. The MoU followed the building of a N2.5bn worth Clinical Complex by the proprietor of ABUAD, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), in the hospital as part of the requirements by Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and National Universities Commission for the running of Medicine and Surgery in the institution. http://www.punchng.com/news/nigeria-not-completely-free-from-ebola-minister/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |

A highly contagious form of bird fly has been detected in the Dutch village of Hekendorp, in the province of Utrecht, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs announced on Sunday. The National Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM) confirmed to national broadcaster NOS that the bird flu variant is H5N8, a type which also occurred earlier this month in Germany. The infection with highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza was found in a poultry farm. The type is very contagious among birds. For chickens, this version is deadly. This type of bird flu can also spread to humans, but the effects are not serious. However, protective measures are adopted for people who may come into direct and close contact with infected poultry. Also, a temporary standstill of transport for poultry farms and mixed farms with poultry was proclaimed throughout the Netherlands. The farm in Hekendorp is being cleared by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). It is a poultry farm with six stalls with a total of around 150,000 laying hens. As of Sunday, at 11.30 a.m. a total ban was ordered on transporting poultry and other poultry, eggs, poultry manure and used bedding from poultry farms and mixed farms with poultry. This prohibition applies to a maximum of 72 hours, while the 16 poultry farms in a zone of 10 km around the company got a ban of 30 days. culled from www.punching.com |

Chairman, Lagos State Blood Transfusion Committee, Dr Adetoun Agbe-Davies, says the state has recorded a rise in voluntary blood donation from 474 units in 2004 to 1,888 between January and June this year. “From 474 units of blood from voluntary donors in 2004, we had 4,775 units in 2013 and from January to June 14, 2014, we had 1,888 units. “We hope that more people will take interest in helping others to save their lives, Agbe-Davies disclosed at the 2014 annual health public screening on Monday in Mushin, Lagos. The screening was organised by the Muslim Congress of Mushin Local Government Area. She urged medical practitioners to ensure that 100 per cent of all blood for transfusion come from voluntary blood donors. She said that meeting the 2020 World Health Organisation goal of 100 per cent of all blood for transfusion coming from voluntary donors would address issues of touting for blood donation. According to her, the WHO’s set goal will also address the demand for family replacement of blood through family donation for mothers at ante-natal booking. “I urge everyone to imbibe the spirit of voluntary blood donation and also to become repeat donors; this will make safe blood available. “There is a need to create awareness on the vital role of voluntary blood donation to save lives and reduce deaths. “This is very important because records have shown that quite a number of deaths are related to loss of blood. www.punchng.com http://www.punchng.com/news/lagos-records-1888-blood-donations-in-six-months/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |
