ACM10: Though the president does not have power to dethrone him since his power is derived from traditional source. But he has the power to diminish his influence or even make things difficult for him. I remember when Gov. Chimaroke Nnamani had problem with Igwe of Nara Unateze in Nkanu. He devised an ingenious way to reduce his influence and prestige by dividing his kingdom into fragments and recognizing pretenders to the thrones as the trditional rulers of autonomous communities from those fragments. At the end of the day, the real Igwe was controlling only a small portion of what was once his dominion, surrounded by other hostile Igwes of the autonomous communities.
You are now comparing an igew from someone in Nkanu to the Oba of Benin? where is nkanaanu again?
PoliticsRe: Anambra Has Lowest Rate Of Unemployment – Minister by honeric01(m): 6:49pm On Jul 04, 2012
manny4life: Well dude, to save the argument any further, you had to win. TBH, it looks like we're hitting roadblock so I guess you had to win. I read ALL your comments, but unfortunately, you did not read mine because I had questions I asked numerously, you never answered.

For instance I wanted to know you own definition of employment, and like I put it" I don't want to know what some schmuck put out there online or an expert opinion and definition" BUT you own definition of employment and gainfully employed. I also asked you to tell me the two components of employment, still nothing... I mean I can go on and no, yet u did not answer. Brother, it comes to a time, I gave up...

Here you go again with your vague input; roadside trade is not helping the country. How do sum up your opinions? undecided undecided undecided When you say it's not helping the country, do you mean economic wise? Have you asked yourself how McDonalds, Subway and the rest started? If 10,000 galas are sold each day, isn't that contributing to the retail portion of GDP? The company manufacturing gala increases production by 10,000 to meet demand thus increasing the production of GDP. When the company buys excess flour and sugar from Dangote, is Dangote not likely to hire more skilled and experienced workers?

Dude, retail is an industry, while selling is a JOB. The medium of sale whether it's online, at home, in your car, at your desk, hotdog cart, ice cream/food vans, whatever is not relevant to the status quo of employment. After all, the folks with carts and vans pay DC taxes, file both federal and state returns and declare if they had employed anyone or not. If you're one person in the business "sole proprietor", if you hired 1person or not, you file paperwork with the state regardless of whether you're a food van or not. Whether you stay in the cart, online or whatever.

Anyway man, I know you will say otherwise, so good luck on your opinion... cool cool cool
You didn't read mine because if you did, you would have seen my definition, you can go back and read.
you said you do not want expert definition, rather mine, yet you are asking me for 2 components of employment?
Selling gala in traffic vs carpentry, tailoring, farming, which would you prefer or see as a contributor to the economy?
Retail i know, selling i also know, in traffic, that i am against, the highways was NEVER built for buying and selling, it's an OFFENSE to sell on the highway (not here, not by the roadside), highways are not even friendly to roadside sellers, not to talk of on the highway sellers.

No one is saying selling is BAD or wrong, i said hawking on the HIGHWAY is wrong. we are not competing here bro are we?
it's wrong, risky, unhealthy and only fit for those with no hope for alternate.

Frostyzone: Oh lordee lord! So all the people that are ''really employed'' according to your liking, love their jobs, heh? First, let me ask you this:What is employment? Isn't it when an individual devouts his/her time on an activity? Since gala hawkers are devouting their time on an activity, which is selling gala, ain't they employed. Must we all have an office and roof above our heads, to be considered 'gainfully employed'?
Like I said before Dude, you are embarrassing yourself by sounding dumb.

manny4life: Ok dude, you win... HURRAY.

No matter how hard I try to drill it down to you, you will never get it. I guess even if the gala man sold his gala through online medium, he still isn't employed; I asked you like five questions which you haven't answered, no more time wasting... YOU WIN.
We argue to learn, some people said main market in Onitsha is the biggest in west Africa, i didn't argue, i asked them to provide facts to back it up, that's all. i am willing to learn.

Please re-phrase your questions and i will answer them. i believe if you read my comments, you'd have seen the answers i provided except you haven't been reading.

I am not here to win, i am here to let us know that selling gala in traffic or roadside bla bla bla is not employment and not likely going to help this country.

He observed that many youths had turned their attention to ridding commercial motorcycle as easy means of getting money.

manny4life: Dude, as much as I want to school you on economics, I won't.

Take this home as a thought for you, there's a difference between WAGE and EMPLOYMENT. Don't ever mix the two up, even in the U.S., that's why we have people who work at minimum wage or even below minimum wage. They're employed; some are minimum wage earners, some work under minimum wage, and most who are in this category are likely to fall under the "Poverty line". It doesn't mean they are not working... Wage and Employment, TWO different topics in economics.
You actually believe i don't know there's?
Sorry, where did i say they aren't working?
Wage and employment is different, abeg show me where i said otherwise.
PoliticsRe: Anambra Has Lowest Rate Of Unemployment – Minister by honeric01(m): 5:10pm On Jul 04, 2012
manny4life: Dude, don't balk yet... Just like I have my own definition, I need your own definition, not some definition that some schmuck put out there or an expert opinion put out there. What I want is your own definition.

As for the corporations part, I'll leave you to that one.

Yes I said "ROADSIDE", even on the trains people hawk their stuff but I said roadside. So let me guess this right, because they jump into traffic and sell gala, that doesn't qualify them, but if they stood at a stand, will that qualify them as employed? cheesy cheesy cheesy

Give it up man, this is not working for you at all. Breaking traffic rules and regulations is totally different from someone picking up their sh/it in the morning to go and hawk. The activity of buying and selling is called TRADE. When you're involved in trade, (TRADING), you're involved in a economic activity called a JOB(TRADERS). Whether you sit at your desk and trade online, in the bus, on an airplane, in the train, at the mall, in the cart, a front store, whatever medium is just a medium to execute the trade, nothing else.
Roadside
Middle of the road

Do you know the difference?

Roadside is not same with on the road.

Selling gala in the train is not same with selling running after moving vehicles.. how hard is this?

Those who sell in the train are also surviving/hustling, same with the roadsides, hustling/surviving. LIVING TO WORK BECAUSE ONCE THEY STOP JUST FOR 1 DAY, THEY STARVE. the sell to get daily food, just to feed for the day.

An employed or gainfully employed person is someone who can take care of his needs and the same time have enough to save WHILE doing what he or she loves.

Hawking is not EMPLOYMENT nor is it SELF EMPLOYMENT because people doing it are not doing it because they LOVE it but because they MUST survive and feed since they believe they have no other option
PoliticsRe: Anambra Has Lowest Rate Of Unemployment – Minister by honeric01(m): 5:05pm On Jul 04, 2012
Frostyzone: Seriously Dude, stop! Just stop, abeg! You are really embarrassing yourself with your blind arguments. Maybe, you fancy yourself as an intellect, but you are coming off as an IGNORAMUS instead.
No offense bro, just saying it as I see it as a neutral observer.
You can ignore if they aren't coming the way you would have wanted.
PoliticsRe: Anambra Has Lowest Rate Of Unemployment – Minister by honeric01(m): 4:58pm On Jul 04, 2012
manny4life: Per my initial post, civil servants that earn less than N20,000 in different service, I guess they're not employed BUT rather, "SURVIVING". I guess sales reps who earn N30,000 a month are not employed, BUT surviving. I guess even probably taxi drivers, motorcyclist, cleaners, gardeners, gate men, et al who probably earn a sum of N30,000 at their jobs are not working BUT surviving.

Like I told you, STOP confusing economic expression with the social issues. Though related, but fall in different sides of the aisle. You probably don't know the definition of employment because if you did, you will know that "SELF EMPLOYMENT" is a type of employment. I asked you before, what are the two required component for there to be "employment"? I still wait on the answer
Those are underemployed because they get paid lower than what their counter part gets in other parts of the world same with sales rep.

THIS IS WHY I AM SAYING IF WE ARE TO LOOK AT THE STANDARD DEFINITION OF GAINFULLY EMPLOYED, THEN WE'D KNOW THAT MORE THAN 60% OF THE CURRENT WORKERS WE HAVE IN NIGERIA ARE SIMPLE UNDEREMPLOYED OR JUST SURVIVING.

For cab and the rest you listed, they make more then 3k in a day, go and do your own research and stop trying to expand this discuss.
I repeat selling in traffic is not employment, it's survival/hustling they're doing.

It seems you do not know that i know bits about self employment, maybe you have forgotten so soon, we had a discuss on the "5,000 sacked in 2 weeks thread". maybe you think i am typing all these because i am alien to SE.
PoliticsRe: Anambra Has Lowest Rate Of Unemployment – Minister by honeric01(m): 4:52pm On Jul 04, 2012
manny4life: LOL... so Easy for coprpoartions with bad assets to get loand . I can imagine how easy it was for many failed companies when their creditors came knocking. Tell that to folks who don't know how the system works.

I asked you again, DEFINE EMPLOYMENT? What is SELF EMPLOYMENT? Give me the two major components of "EMPLOYMENT"? At least, if we're gonna flog the issue, we have to know where we stand.

In a sane country? Bro, have you traveled out at all? Take a trip to DC here, they don't chase you but they have carts or even FOOD VANS seat by the side walk, or curb side selling so what are you talking about? So because they chase you on highways, that means they're not employed? So if they seat in ice cream or food vans and travel from one place, will you change your opinion
You actually believe i'm going to give you any definition when it can be easily gotten online?
We are in Nigeria and we know that majority of the companies standing now are in debts, yet they get more loan from banks so make we forget that side. those who failed are the ones the owners are tired of cooking the book or just decided to walk out with the remains.

You said by the roadside, NOT IN BETWEEN HIGHWAYS, lets stop this back and forth, what can't be repeated continuously is not employment, selling inside traffic is not employment because they are mostly arrested by road safety and police unless of course you want to feign ignorance again.

When did selling by the road side equals selling and chasing after speeding vehicle on the highway?

IgweAni: Ignorance is bad and here i was thinking u were learned. Gosh!

What are u on about?
A gala seller that makes 1k/day = 30k/mnth. And
A civil servant that earns 18k/mnth as minimum wage, mind u not every states are paying that yet sef. Who amongst them is 'gainfully' employed?

For ur info ppl dnt really hawk gala in anambra like its done in lagos, most are into trading in shops.

For morr education about the Onitsha main market which used to br the largest in West Africa until recently overtaken by Kumasi market. Read below:

http://lagoslinearticles.com/about.asp
Do you think i am typing all i type to score ethnic points? wetin concern me with what civil servants make? if they like let them make 10k per month. these ones are underemployed, they are not even active in anything except the police and the teachers, the rest are useless.

Now back to the gala or no gala thing. if you make 1k per day selling gala in traffic, you're surviving and not employed. this 1k is not EVEN FIXED, you only sell 100 gala in a bumper to bumper traffic and not on any given day. so sometimes you don't even make 200naira in day so stop comparing..

In general, MAJORITY of Nigerians are either unemployed, unemployable or just hustling/surviving.
PoliticsRe: Anambra Has Lowest Rate Of Unemployment – Minister by honeric01(m): 4:23pm On Jul 04, 2012
manny4life: Know what myself? You're the one hiding yourself from the truth. How many corporations have you seen with bad debts on the book with mighty assets that goes with it? Do you know the equation about Asset and Liabilities and their relationship? Please, STOP being funny. When Corps have so much debts, and balance sheet is pretty much red than green, your outstanding assets are pretty much useless and results to devaluation.

Petty traders have financial access to funds through different channels. So in your mind, someone who hawks gala doesn't have some form of financial assets right to get o ut N10000, 20,000, or even N50,000. Stay true to yourself and you will see the light.

Whether Gala or hot dog stand, it doesn't negate the fact that these folks are "SELF EMPLOYED"...CASE CLOSED.

Dude, like seriously QUIT IT. Your average Nigerian worker who earns 18,000 monthly YET jumps the bus to work, get insulted by his boss, not even sure he/she will receive the N18,000 at the end of month, does it mean they aren't working? How many people earning 30,000 monthly comfortably do all of these you listed? Does it mean they aren't working?

Your problem is you're facing the social issues leave the "secondary aspect" , FOCUS on the the primary economic aspect. They are working just like your average Nigerian slave (forgive me for I used this word) who literally works and get no pay. Everyone work under different circumstance but the results are the same (INCOME).
Case closed for you. it's easy for corporations with reputation and assets to get loan so stop lying to yourself, bro don't overflog this.. a gala hawker is not employed, that's not employment, THAT IS SURVIVAL.

Chasing buses on highways to sell 50 naira gala is employment to you? in a sane country, that is an offense, hope you know that?
PoliticsRe: Anambra Has Lowest Rate Of Unemployment – Minister by honeric01(m): 4:22pm On Jul 04, 2012
Spirit of Okija: However, thankfully through Village commitees, associations and other such groups, many petty traders have been able to take out loans and expand their businesses.. Infact, most of them get these loans without necessarily a collateral.. All they need is a reputable family memeber to vouch for them and a pay back plan.. Monies are normally given to those who must have understudied an established business man (What we call Gbalu ya Nwaboy)..
Hehehe, you mean the gala hawker get loans from the whole village? a loan from the whole village can only raise funds to hawk gala which brings in 1k profit daily at most? loan to sell gala? my igbo brothers are wiser than this man. stop insulting my friends.

All in all, my igbo bros are industrious but those selling gala aren't doing themselves any favor because they are really slaving away.

hugooh42: Just listen to yourself.Do u think the gala seller will remain a gala seller for ever?
I know a guy who used to live on the same street with me back in those days. He's from a poor family and on completion of his secondary education he started selling fried cashew nuts in traffic. He will buy raw cashew nut fry them and sell. With time his younger ones joined him,he then introduced distinct flavour to his own nuts when competition was getting stiffer and with time his product was selling like hot cakes in supermarkets around Onitsha and beyond. He used to travel to Benue state and Kogi to buy his raw cashew nuts at a cheaper price. At a point he couldn't meetup with demands especially from people in Aba,Portharcourt even from the north. To cut the story short, the guy employed about 20 workers including graduates who worked in his factory.By the time i left Nigeria the guy had become a multi millionaire with 2 Suv's and a duplex he built at Asaba. On my last visit to Naija i bumped into him and i couldn't but marvel when i learnt from him he has branched into Oil business and has left the cashew nut business to his siblings.I got to know the guy owns about4 filling stations at this moment and he is not done yet.

They get loans from banks
From selling their shares
