Sharks, Dolphin strike nears end by Sammy Wejinya 15 December 2010, 15:14 The strike action by two Nigeria Premier League clubs, Sharks and Dolphin may soon be over. This follows showdown talks between the concerned parties on Wednesday afternoon. Both clubs are owned and sponsored by the Rivers state government. The players of both clubs had downed tools since Monday following the failure of their sponsors to meet their financial obligations. The players of both clubs are owed, amongst others, sign on fees, salaries and match bonuses. ‘We are coming to a successful resolution of the crisis. All things been equal, we will soon know the exact situation of things,’ a source who pleaded anonymity told SuperSport.com. The clear-the-air meeting was attended by the Secretaries of Sharks and Dolphin, Cyril Dum Wite and Ahmed Abdulrahman. Managers of both clubs, John Obuh (Sharks) and Stanley Eguma (Dolphin) were also present as well as the accountants of both clubs. The meeting was presided over by sports commissioner, Boma Iyayi. Some of the decisions reached at the meeting may see the log jam iron out before the end of Wednesday. It was agreed that one month salaries for players of both clubs would be paid by Friday while the remaining three months salaries would be offset by Monday next week. Match bonuses for four games would be cleared on Friday as well. The remainder (sixty percent) of the 2009/2010 sign on fees would be paid between the 14th and 20th of January, 2011. One of the individuals who attended the meeting described it as satisfactory but expressed hope that the sponsors would hold up their own end of the bargain. “We are satisfied. It’s all about compromise. Let’s wait and see how things pan out,’ he said. Meanwhile the issue is expected to be finally put to bed by 5:00pm on Wednesday when an extra ordinary meeting between players and officials of both clubs and the sports commissioner will hold at the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt. http://www.supersport.com/football/nigeria/news/101215/Sharks_Dolphin_strike_nears_end

Uneasy times on the Plateau by Ojeikere Aikhoje 15 December 2010, 14:18 Top flight football has returned to the city of Jos, but SuperSport.com’s Ojeikere Aikhoje reports that there’s nothing to celebrate as the duo of Juth and Plateau United are struggling to cope after six weeks of action. Chelsea star, John Obi Mikel, remains one of the best players discovered in the Plateau state capital, Jos. As a rookie, he excelled at Plateau United, which is owned by the state government. Another famous product of the city is VVV Venlo youngster, Ahmed Musa. Although Musa hit stardom at Kano Pillars with 18 goals to set a new all-time goal record in the Nigerian league, the foundation for his success was laid at Jos based Aminchi football academy and later Jos university teaching hospital, fondly called Juth. Nigerian stars like Baba Otu Mohammed, Yakubu Mabo, Ismaila Mabo, the Atuegbu brothers, Segun Odegbami, Stephen Musa and Sam Pam amongst others learnt their football trade in Jos, a city which boosts of passionate supporters for its local teams. CELEBRATION The duo of Juth and Plateau United made history in the lower division last season as both sides secured promotion to the elite class in style. It was the first time in many years that two teams from the same city would gain promotion together. In fact, Jos most supported team, Mighty Jets, narrowly missed promotion too. Juth emerged champions, while Plateau United was first runner-up. The fortune of both teams was widely celebrated by football fans in the tin city. However, their fortune has since nose-dived in the elite class. Both teams have landed in a difficult terrain. NIGERIA PREMIER LEAGUE It’s already match day six in the Nigeria Premier League and the Jos teams have entered the history books with two defeats in front of their fans. Plateau United made history first after consecutive home defeats to Dolphins on match day one and Sunshine Stars on match day three respectively. Despite the fact that the club was able attract some of the best legs in the land; the results have refused to come. This has made former Enyimba captain and Sudan based defender, Ajibade Omolade a troubled man. “It’s strange that we’ve lost twice at home,” Omolade told SuperSport.com. “We deserve something better. This team is not a bad team. I’m convinced we have a decent side,” he added. p> Supporters of Plateau United had to wait till match day five before their drums came alive to celebrate the first victory in the elite class. Before the victory, the lads put up a spirited performance on the road at Zamfara United. After a two-goal advantage in the first half, the team returned from recess to surrender their lead. At the end of the referees whistle, the Jos side conceded three cheeky goals to throw away the points. If the experienced Omolade is troubled, then Juth without a win in six weeks appears to be in a more precarious state. “I think it’s just a bad phase for us, but my prayer is that we must come out in the days ahead,” was the reaction of Juth’s first-choice goalkeeper, Eze Fidelis. “We’ve played well in all our matches. In fact, we kept Kwara United under pressure, but the goals refused to come. I’ve never experienced that before,” the former Benin republic based goalkeeper said. Ghanaian import, James Amankwei, insists the players must show more commitment. “This is the time for us to bounce back,” he said to SuperSport.com. To compound their woes, both Jos based teams are at the bottom of the 20-team log. Plateau is placed 19th, while Juth is 20th. MATCH DAY SEVEN The league enters match day seven this weekend and the clubs must begin their revival. In spite of their heroic outing at Shooting Stars, Plateau United was unable to get a point. The Nduka Ndubuisi side welcome Enyimba on Saturday while Juth travel to another newly-promoted side, Crown. CHRISTMAS BREAK The clubs must re-strategise if they want to retain their Premier League status at the end of the current campaign. At a time their colleagues would be on the Christmas break, it’s obvious that players of both teams would do without the break to plot their way out of relegation waters. 2011 If both teams fail to raise their game when the league resumes in January, then they should begin to think about life in the lower division. The battle for survival begins in January for Plateau United and Juth. http://www.supersport.com/football/nigeria/news/101215/Uneasy_times_on_the_Plateau

Omokaro pays tribute to the late Ogoli by Sammy Wejinya 15 December 2010, 13:44 Ocean Boys’ goal scoring machine Charles Omokaro has received news of his selection into the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) team of the week with mixed emotions. Omokaro helped himself to two second half goals as Ocean Boys claimed their first victory of the campaign at the expense of Niger Tornadoes at the Samson Siasia Stadium on Sunday. Barely forty eight hours earlier, Omokaro’s teammate, Emma Ogoli slumped and died during the same game in which Omokaro excelled and the former Sharks goal poacher has wasted no time in dedicating the NPL award to his fallen teammate. ‘It is a pity he is not with us anymore. We miss him terribly and dedicate my award to him…and the goals too,’ Omokaro told SuperSport.com. The burly forward also discussed the plight of his teammates, Ospino Egbe and Okey Akabogu who were involved in a ghastly car crash on Monday. Egbe has since been discharged from the hospital while Akabogu is in police custody on manslaughter charges following the death of two pedestrians in the crash. “We are very sad. It was a shock to hear that our friend were involved in such an accident so soon after the previous incident (death of Ogoli). Thank God Ospino is out of the hospital. Our prayers are with Akabogu. We hope the matter is resolved soon,’ he said. Ocean boys are in 18th place on the log with five points from six games. http://www.supersport.com/football/nigeria/news/101215/Omokaro_pays_tribute_to_the_late_Ogoli

No going back on in strike - Odinga by Sammy Wejinya 15 December 2010, 13:04 Sharks captain Odinga Odinga has re-affirmed the stance of the players of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) club to continue their strike action until their financial obligations are met. The players, who have been on strike since Monday, are owed forty percent of their sign on fees for the 2009/2010 football season. They are also owed salaries for the last four months. This unwelcome situation has seen the players of the team stay away from training for the last three days. They have also threatened to boycott their next league game against Bukola Babes in Port Harcourt. Players of Dolphin have also adopted the same hard line stance for similar reasons. The Sharks skipper is adamant that they will only return to training if their demands are met. ‘I have said it before. We (the players) had a meeting. We will not play until we are paid. It is as simple as that,’ he said. However, in a bid to salvage the situation, commissioner for sports in Rivers State is said to have called for a meeting with the captains of Sharks and Dolphin. The meeting which was scheduled for Wednesday morning was also open to the managers of both clubs, Stanley Eguma (Dolphin) and John Obuh (Sharks). It is expected that the strike would be called off late Wednesday if things go according to script at the meeting. Sharks are 10th on the NPL log while Dolphin is joint top with only goals difference separating them from the leaders, Sunshine Stars. http://www.supersport.com/football/nigeria/news/101215/No_going_back_on_in_strike_Odinga

My nominees Kobojunkie : Why i ignore her posts : Never in her nairaland life has she seen anything good about Nigeria, she hardly give credit when due and even when she tries to pretend she does, it's so full of sarcasm. ![]() Advise :Please learn to give credit to people trying to repair your country that you ran away from (because you couldn't stand the heat) ![]() 12large : Why i ignore his posts: He hardly makes sense, and when he does, it often smells of sentiments and bias, he's also very prone to insulting people who do not share his views. Advise : Try to live around people, stop living in an isolated area, it makes you think you are the only one on earth with eyes, white and black TV with a free to air cable channels where you manage to watch the American soccer league (Ekpo this, Ekpo that) Rabiu Ibrahim better than Okocha, Kanu and Oliseh put together. ![]() Sagamite Why i ignore his posts : He was once one of my favorite posters on NL until recently when he turned to an herbalist, always insulting people with different views from his, he can cuss even while asleep, mo-ron this mo-ron that, that word should be scarce by now or probably has been used up from the dictionary, incase you try to look up the word in your dictionary and you can't find it, you can get a lawyer because Sagamite has sent that word into extinction. ![]() Advise : Please stop thinking everyone's brain is tied to yours, we all have our own way of reasoning, we can't be 100% in agreement all the time, learn to accept when others stick to their own view, if you want everyone to think the way you do, then you might as well create your own earth with dummies as your subordinates, then you can lord over them with your genius of a brain ok? (No offense and don't come cussing at me oo ) |

I think we need to help some nairalanders change the way they reason, type and converse with fellow nairalanders, so i have decided to set up a thread for that purpose. *You have the chance to nominate 3 nairalanders you think you can't stand, you don't read their post/comments, you ignore them whenever they are on a particular thread with you. *The nomination is going to be up for 7 days after which the top 3'll be put up on a poll for another 7 days to determine the MOST detested NAIRALANDER for 2010. (1ST OF JANUARY 2011) *3 nominee per person. *Write a short reason why you don't read their posts, respond to their replies to your post, rather you ignore them. * And what you think they should work on so as for them to become a better poster for 2011. Thanks and let the nomination begins ![]() |
