From Romanus Ugwu, Abuja A group, under the auspices of Coalition of Concerned Nigerians for Equity and Justice, has threatened to mobilise no fewer than 17.5 million Nigerian youths across the country to occupy the offices of the Department of State Services (DSS) to protest against its Director General, Lawal Musa Daura, over his alleged continued interference in Rivers State election matters. Speaking to journalists at the entrance of the National Assembly during a protest yesterday, the leader of the group, Prince Aforke Okporua, also issued a seven-day ultimatum to the DG DSS to invite Yobe State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), who allegedly collected N15 million bribe. Okporua, who frowned on the continued harassment of Rivers REC, argued that the DG DSS’ interference in electoral matters was an attempt to stifle the opposition, which according to him, was unacceptable, stressing that the DSS should rather pre occupy itself with the task of ensuring internal security and leave electoral matters to the tribunal and the judiciary. His words: “The action of the Director General, Department of State Security (DSS) is uncalled for, ungodly and against the fundamental tenets of democracy. For God’s sake, we have the Electoral Act and the Constitution and matters that have to do with elections should be left solely in the hands of the election tribunal. The DSS has no business involving itself in any election matter. “Rivers State has a clear winner in the governorship election and the winner, according to the Resident Electoral Commissioner is the former minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, currently the executive governor of Rivers State. Therefore, the involvement of the DSS in intimidating and harassing the REC of Rivers is uncalled for and unnecessary. “Take for example, the electoral issue that transpired in Yobe State, where the REC was accused of receiving N15 million from the incumbent governor through his ADC yet Daura, the DG DSS, has not invited the Yobe State REC or is it because he declared APC as winner of the election?” . “Democracy is all about respect for the people and their choice, decision and anything in the contrary is a threat to democracy. We are therefore, using this ample opportunity to call on the DGSS to exercise the highest height of professionalism. The intimidation and persecution of Rivers REC is not lawful. “President Buhari won in Katsina, Kano and nobody has questioned the results. How come they are questioning the results in Rivers and Akwa-Ibom States? It is a clear cut attempt to threaten democracy and an attempt to stifle the opposition. If the DSS wants to operate the way they are doing in Rivers, we want to mandate him to invite the Yobe REC accused of receiving bribe and the teller used has been tendered and accepted as exhibit before the tribunal within the next seven days. “If the DSS does not leave electoral matters in the hands of the electoral tribunal and the judiciary, we will call on all our 17.5 million Nigerian youths across the 36 states of the federation to occupy Nigeria until Daura is removed from office. I don’t want to go into the report that he is a card- carrying member of APC. Our concern is how we can grow our democracy, consolidate it and above all ensure its continuity,” he warned. By Levinus Nwabughiogu ABUJA – President Mohammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria is erroneously being regarded as a rich country, stating that indices and parameters of evaluating a rich country such as economic advancement, improved social services were lacking. He however enjoined the Nigerian elites to be prepared to make sacrifice to rescue the country. The president spoke when he received the outgoing President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Dr. Donald Kaberuka and other officials of the bank. According to him, the privileged and influential citizens clearly have to do more now than in the past to help the country deal successfully with its economic and security problems. President Buhari also Kaberuka that his administration will welcome more support from the AfDB for projects in versatile sectors like agriculture that can easily be explored to create more jobs for unemployed Nigerians. He said: “With the shock of falling oil prices, lack of revenues, and insecurity, the Nigerian elites must now wake up and provide the right guidance in their communities, and also lead the economy on the right path more than they used to do”.
