Autos / Why Your Car's Catalytic Converter Is Very Valuable by HottieCoach(f): 6:46am On Mar 17, 2021
A catalytic converter is a device incorporated in the exhaust system of a motor vehicle, containing a catalyst for converting pollutant gases into less harmful ones.

This device had been available in vehicles since the 1970's

The catalyst's job is to speed up the removal of pollution. The catalyst is made from platinum or a similar, platinum-like metal such as palladium or rhodium. A catalytic converter is a large metal box, bolted to the underside of your car, that has two pipes coming out of it.

The catalytic converter is very valuable because of the precious metals that are included in the converter, such as platinum, or platinum-like material such as palladium or rhodium. So, the more expensive the material, the more expensive it is to replace.

Due to the fall of the naira and a rise in the cost of precious metals like platinum and palladium, the contents of the catalytic converter is highly sort after. The parts have become an unusual windfall for thieves, who can make hundreds of naira from selling them to auto parts suppliers or scrapyards. Catalytic converters can be melted and the highly valuable metals, like palladium and rhodium, extracted.

At present a typical 2003-2018 Toyota Corolla catalytic converter (its content) can fetch between ₦100,000 -150,000.

How to prevent catalytic converter theft.

1 Do not leave your vehicle unattended with your roadside technician.

2. If you do, tell him bluntly that you have your catalytic converter intact and it should not go missing .

3. If for any reason you have catalytic converter failure and it has to be unblocked , collect all the contents, tie it up in a bag and contact me I'll show you where to sell it for good money cheesy

I hope you didn't give the contents to your mechanic/panelbeater. That's ₦100,000 sitting there .

Vehicle Details .

What are you selling?

A 2008 Honda Accord has six trim levels , and 3 different gasoline engine types (2.0 L, 2.4 L and 3.5 L) it also has a diesel version . Same vehicle is also equipped in manual and automatic transmission.

These details are very important in a vehicle advert for intending buyers.

Ultimately most of these information can be obtained by including the vehicles identify number VIN.

Multiple Clear pictures.

Nothing can be as frustrating as seeing an advert with just 2 pics (Front and rear), and a contact phone number angry

You really expect the buyer to assume the other pics as they should be?

This platform and many others do not have a restriction on the number of pictures you can post.

Sellers should endeavour to include a 360 view of vehicle picture, and engine bay picture and interior pictures.

A location.

Irrespective of how juicy the deal is, location most of the time determines if the reader would deal or click the back button.

An intending buyer in Edo will appreciate locations in Edo State, while an intending buyer in Sokoto will appreciate Sokoto and it's environs .

A larger percentage of most car sales posted online are in Lagos and Abuja, so adding detail to location helps

For example

2010 Toyota Corolla

Location Lagos

Buyer calls in and is told the car is in Badagry or Epe or Ikorodu.

For an intended buyer this could be a turn off if his location is not close to such areas, it would be nice if sellers could state exactly where these vehicle are ( I know most middle men do not want to loose their cut ) but at least adding a local govt would be helpful .

A Good example

2010 Toyota Corolla

Location VI mon-fri (9-4pm) Ikorodu sat-sun

Clearly vehicle is in use by the owner and can be viewed in 2 possible locations.

Hundreds of times I have searched several platforms for used vehicles to buy, it can be really frustrating running through most adverts posted there. Most adverts appear vague and carry little information to help the buyer make a decision.

Hopefully sellers will read this tips and improve on their adverts.

Tip 1
Vehicle fluid Care

Engine oil: Using the right manufacturer recommended weights of Engine oil for your engine and using high quality brands coupled with a little common sense will keep engine running like new. 5000mile oil changes for full synthetic brands and 3000miles for semi or mineral oil is highly recommended, do not forget to factor in traffic conditions if you live in traffic infested areas, you can sacrifice 500miles of traffic for every 5000miles and do your oil changes at 4500miles remember that when a vehicle is sitting in traffic the engine is still running and suffers more wear and tear. vehicles used often on highways tend to fare better than vehicles used within cities with excessive traffic.

hi everyone, i am new here, and i will be sticking around.

The topic Preventing Expensive Vehicle Repairs is a really broad one, so im guessing ill break it into parts so i dont bore readers .
prevention in this context is focused on extending the life of vehicle parts and by extension, vehicle life.

lets start with the simple basic stuff for vehicles that have not suffered any form of abuse.

Driving pattern

Smart Driving :

How you drive your car has a direct impact on your pocket .

Aggressive heavy footers like heavenlybang , diportivo, gazzuzz , mamanbawa pay the price by visiting the gas station more often, slow steady even driving will get you better gas mileage , keep revs under 2,000 rpm you might get to to destination 1min slower but will save a lot on fuel which when accumulates becomes a lot of money .

Drive like a Grandma, it's good for your pocket.

Overloading Vehicle

Motor vehicles, are designed with a specific maximum carrying capacity known as the vehicle's Gross Vehicle Mass or GVM. ... Carrying capacity includes the weight of the driver, passengers, accessories, fuel, tools and equipment, and the vehicle body.

In this part of the world we pay very little attention to these important limitations.

Overloading can cause premature wear to tyres and suspension parts, cause ineffective braking, make vehicle harder to steer , and finally with all these combined it could cause an accident. Avoid overloading vehicle .

CV axle booths (aka shaft rubbers )

You driving and experience vibrations at take off that fizzle out when you reduce power or attain higher speeds? Or you make a large turn left or right and you have the krakrakrakrakra noise? Most times it is a worn out inner side CV axle or outer side.

Axles wear out prematurely when there is no lubrication caused by a leaking booth.

To avoid this expensive repair , always replace torn CV axle booths immediately you notice a leak, it will save you thousands of naira long term

Inspect at every tyre rotation or oil change, replace if frail or looking worn with orignal booths and grease. A stich in time saves a lot of axles.

Always buy a brand new CV axle if you can afford it, and never use an unqualified tech for inner side axles jobs as records have shown a lot of transmission damage have been attributed to poor execution of work done.

Tyre rotation and wheel alignment

Tyre rotation counteracts the uneven wear characteristics of each wheel position on the vehicle, ensure your tyres are rotated at every other oil change ~10,000mile interval

Tyre rotation in basic terms requires moving tyres from the front to the rear and vice versa. It could involve the spare tyre too if it is a full wheel with same rim type.

Wheel alignment : Not a bad idea to check vehicle wheel alignment every other oil change to be sure it is within specification. DO NOT align vehicle wheels if you notice a sharp increase in excessive play or vehicle shift to one side during braking or acceleration, have the suspension inspected by a qualified mechanic/workshop instead then go for an alignment after problems have been sorted out .

Finally some vehicles will never align on some fancy high Tech equipment that have preset values for each vehicle model. Simple reason is you bought a salvage vehicle that was structurally damaged. So if your vehicle fits that category, kindly step down a bit to a laser guided system that can handle basic alignment jobs.

Tip 2

SUSPENSION CARE

TYRES.

Keeping your tyres in good shape will keep more money in your pockets , these simple tips will extend tyre life.

Tyre Pressure

Stick with manufacturer tyre pressure recommendations . Tyre pressure recommendations are written on the driver door side panel, they are designed to provide very comfortable and safe tyre pressure settings, always follow the recommendations to extend tyre life. Most tyres when over pressurised will develop uneven spots causing uncomfortable vibrations when driven. Ultimately those tyres will explode unexpectedly.

Most sedans and SUVs require between 29-38psi, always check the door panel .

Radiator Coolant :

Coolant provides lubrication for the moving parts it comes into contact with inside your vehicle. It keeps the seals and gaskets supple so they are less likely to harden and leak, it also guards against corrosion. Coolant cannot be left in a system forever and should be replaced every 30,000-60,000miles. at this point please not that not every coolant out there is suitable , search for high quality vehicle manufacturer brands and not the cheap coloured water, do not mix different coolants to avoid unwanted chemical reactions, if in doubt flush system and use one brand only.

Brake Fluids:

This is another vehicle fluid that is largely ignored. If you don't have your Brake Fluid changed as recommended by your vehicle manufacturer this will lead to Moisture Contamination, which will lead to corrosion on brake part members and an ineffective braking system or failure . A brake oil drain every 2 years should eliminate the possibility for failure.

Power steering oils:

Most times this oil is treated like (vibranium! wakanda forever!) Owners assuming it should last the lifetime of the vehicle, and you only see users performing a refill after a leak. A larger percentage of powersteering oil leaks and steering pump failures are attributed to poor viscosity on power steering fluids. if you really want your power steering to last forever, Drain and refill every (Theres an argument to this, some experts say every 2years while some say 70,000-100,000miles) every 2years seems fair enough.

Car Talk / Re: by HottieCoach(f): 2:06am On Mar 13, 2021
Differential Fluids:

The differential oil lubricates the ring and pinion gears that transfer power from the driveshaft to the wheel axles. The purpose of the differential fluid is to cool and lubricate your differential. Most vehicle owners neglect monitoring the differential oils in most 4wheel drive vehicles, one of the reasons of neglect is theres no warning and no dip stick for a quick check. a technician usualy has to go under the vehicle and unsrew a drain bolt to inspect the level, and quality, oil drain intervals are between 30,000-60,000miles for most vehicles.

Car Talk / Re: by HottieCoach(f): 1:59am On Mar 13, 2021
Transmission oil:

One of the most expensive Vehicle repairs is transmission replacement , and in most cases is very avoidable . manufacturers will usually recommend a 100,000mile drain in most automatic transmissions. Yes most transmissions can get 100,000miles without packing up but usually manufacturer warranties end at 100,000miles and they are free from any liability resulting in failure. our recommendation is 30,000 -50,000mile transmission oil drains and refills, looking at it critically most vehicle users cover 10,000-15000miles a year so thats about 3-5year Transmission oil drain intervals on the transmission.

Mikester:
This is a sequel to my previous thread @ https://www.nairaland.com/6427941/things-every-guy-should-know for the ladies in the house.

Disclaimer : This isn't to bash women neither is it meant to surface gender war. I'm no expert on women affairs but quite well-informed. Thanks. Love from Mikester. cool

10 things ladies should know before 30.

1. Set your priorities straight

Women are more likely to view things from an emotional perspective than a logical one which in most cases make them to stick to some wrong choices consistently.

That's why every sensible and wise lady should know how to chase her needs before her wants and to ensure to stick to that decision. Know thy needs young woman. The woman who knows how to set her priorities straight gets her heart desires.

2. Don't be materialistic

Especially when you're broke. A materialistic broke lady will not be able to prioritise wisely thus she's bound to fall.

If you're a materialistic lady, you will always want to have a lot which you don't really need. You won't think twice before buying expensive things (bone straight hair, 60k dress, e.t.c.) but will find it very difficult to invest in yourself.

It is only a while before you eventually turn your head towards prostitution or other illegal means to sustain your extravagant lifestyle. If you want to be materialistic, then be rich.

3. Don't put your looks forward and your hygiene behind

Though some women prioritise their looks and hygiene, we still have some who do not really care because they somehow tend to believe that they will get admirers no matter what. They are the "take me as I am" crew but they fail to realise that for a lady, her body shape, quality and looks equates her self worth and will also determine the kind of men that will approach and cherish her.

Women, your body is your money, high value men prefer better looking and clean women. Don't neglect that.

4. Be busy with something

Though you're beautiful and have an attractive shape, you still need to engage in something. Don't be idle. Don't be a queen waiting on a king. Be a queen busy with her kingdom until her king arrives. Work and earn money and quit prostitution and idle living.

5. Do not depend on your man for everything

It's disgusting when a woman tends to rely on her man for everything even her basic needs. Women like this won't be kept around for long.

6. Shun feminism

Don't be a feminist in your home if you want to have a healthy marriage, that will be lying to yourself and anyone who wants to be happy and successful shouldn't lie to his or herself.

If you yearn for a successful and peaceful marriage, shun feminism as it is against it. Let feminism be for women who choose to be single.

Hate feminism till your last blood drops and you will enjoy a better marriage.

7. Hug feminity

Feminity is the power a woman have to get what she wants. Women who imitate men tend to be unhappy and ridiculed by society. Feminity aids a woman far beyond marriage as well.

A feminine woman is nice, humble and caring. The traits men love most in women. A man would rather fall for a feminine woman than a masculine woman because she makes him feel like a man the most and he'll be eager to give in to her desires more than the other.

Moreover, a woman can't change a man to favour her but her feminity can be a reason for him to change. Thus, she becomes happy and other women will see her as an inspiration.

8. Close your legs

Your body value determines the class of men that will approach you, the more you lose your value through sex, the more serious high value men will despise you. Men study women. Men are watching you and most men will rather choose a virgin whether primary or secondary over a slut. You know that. Deal with it.

Besides the fastest way for men to loose interest in you is by sleeping with you. When you give it to me today, Xenry tommorow, Slawormiir the day after and BadRadio the next week, you're just giving the impression that you have less or no value which lowers your chance of getting or keeping better men.

9. Stop chasing bad boys and scornful men

For God sake, chasing people will always put you at a loss. Consider a man who sells yam at the road and sees Uncle Lalasticlala driving by and chases after him with a tuber of yam, begging him on arrival to purchase the yam.

If the yam's original price was #1, 200, Uncle Lalasticlala will be at power to reduce the price to his own choice, perhaps as low as #500 which will make the man out of desperation to tender it to him leading to his sad loss BUT peradventure the man had opened a nice yam shop with an attractive display that lures people to it, he would sell at a much better price and may even find a better buyer.

Therefore my point is this, chasing people especially bad people will put you at a huge loss. You'll have to follow their own terms to be accepted and what do most guys require from ladies? You'll answer that yourself.

Besides studies have shown that being a bad boy is no longer perceived as cool. Chase a bad boy if you love to be taken advantage of.

As I said to the guys in my previous thread, so I'll say, Don't chase people man or woman, rather be yourself and invest in yourself more and the right people would come around you.

10. Invest in yourself

It will do you good and no evil. People who invest in themselves increase their value and are revered by society. Read more books than people's statuses. Look more attractive, engage in something, add to your cooking skills, be hygienic as though no one has ever be hygiene before. Invest in yourself today.

Hope I'm making sense

Courtsey - Mikester

Listen Sweetheart,
“Your body value determines the class of men that will approach you, the more you lose your value through sex, the more serious high value men will despise you.”
This is wrong.
“High value men”?
I’d love that u explain to me what this means.
Men are attracted to women for different reasons you should know this.
women do not loose value through sex
EXCEPT ! and i repeat EXCEPT! she was approached only for that reason.
Now
“High value men”
i still do not know what you mean by this,
but sake of the word “Value” , i would say High value men do not approach a woman for the sole purpose of sex. Sex should either be considered recreational and reproductive meaning
Relaxation has nothing to do with loosing value and Reproduction of course is a thing of Joy.
You need to stop estimating a woman’s value by your access to her body. That’s not a smart thing to do.

Now, Feminism although few men have realized this,

Gender roles (a set of conforming rules that say how a person should behave based on their gender) can be harmful to both men and women. ... It is also unfair to place pressure on boys to fulfil certain roles that are based on their gender.

You stated and i quote
“Don't be a feminist in your home if you want to have a healthy marriage, that will be lying to yourself and anyone who wants to be happy and successful shouldn't lie to his or herself. “

Are you saying then , that being part of a movement that sympathizes with the pressure placed on Genders hinders a healthy marriage?
Do not be carried away by frivolous persons that pose as feminist and spit lies.
The movement is Pure and void of Hatred for men.

At the end of the day Hotties (my Nairaland sweethearts)
INVESTING in yourself is key as it includes “Setting your priorities straight”
which would eventually keep you “busy with something” and over time not depend on a man for everything.

Love, Hottiecoach.
