The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has fired back at the presidency, saying it was indeed behinnd the October ultimatum given to President Goodluck Jonathan to rescue the abducted Chibok schoolgirls or forget his 2015 ambition of returning as the president of Nigeria. An official of the forum and former vice-chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Ango Abdullahi, who disclosed this during an interview with a selection of journalists in Abuja yesterday, said the group had every right as Nigerians to issue the ultimatum, adding that they were only exercising their freedom of expression. On Monday, the forum, at press conference addressed by two of its members, Barr Solomon Dalung and Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed in Kaduna, had said that President Jonathan had until the end of October this year to produce theschoolgirls abducted in April, or face mass opposition to his re-election as president in 2015. Reacting to the ultimatum by NEF on Tuesday, the presidency, through the senior special assistant to the president on public affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe blasted the group and said the president did not require any threat or ultimatum from the North or any group of persons for him to perform his constitutional responsibilities. But Prof Abdullahi said his group was not surprised at the turn of events, adding that he wondered why anyone who did not know the real members of the NEF would question its membership. “One is not completely surprised with the reaction of the presidential aide on the press conference put together by Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed and Solomon Dalung in Kaduna. First, I think the question with regard to whether the statement actually came from the Northern Elders Forum, perhaps they are not used to seeing other people apart from the usual persons speaking on behalf of the forum. I want to make it absolutely clear that the press conference convened by Dr Hakeem and Dalung was convened with full knowledge and support of the Northern Elders Forum. In fact, it was a product of a meeting that took place that both translated into a press statement. So, that is to disabuse the mind of anybody who doubts thatthese two gentlemen are speaking for themselves. They are speaking on behalf of the forum.“One is surprised that someone who doesn’t know the Northern Elders Forum, should begin to question who are members and who are not members. But I want to assure listeners or readers, as the case may be, that Dr Hakeem and Dalung that convened this press conference in Kaduna did so with full knowledge of the Northern Elders Forum’s main committee. I want to clear that doubt in the mind of anybody, whether from the officialdom or from ordinary reading public,” Abdullahi |

By Nwabueze Okonkwo ONITSHA—The leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has again warned Ndigbo resident in any part of northern Nigeria to relocate to Igboland with immediate effect to avoid falling victim to the raging Boko Haram insurgency in the region. Uwazuruike said he was so worried about the constant killing of innocent Igbo sons and daughters doing legitimate businesses in the north, to the extent that he decided to warn them for the last time to return home. He added that although it was painful for them to abandon their life-time investments in the north to relocate home, their lives were more precious than their wealth. Uwazuruike, who sounded this note of warning at the MASSOB headquarters, Okwe, near Okigwe, Imo State, regretted that his previous calls for his kinsmen to return at the beginning of the insurgency, were not heeded. According to him, this is the reason many Igbo sons and daughters have been killed by the insurgents. Warning that this might be his last time to make such a call, Uwazuruike insisted that their lives could no longer be guaranteed by the Nigerian security forces, adding that the only option left for them was to return home for now. He recalled that the late Biafran warlord, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, had in like manner warned Ndigbo to return home before the outbreak of the Nigerian/Biafran civil war, adding that those who heeded the warning returned and saved their lives, while those who disobeyed it perished with their investments. Meanwhile, MASSOB has closed all its torture camps at Okpoko area of Onitsha, Anambra State, which it alleged had been taken over by a group, Igbo Ga-Adi Nma. MASSOB alleged that the group had turned the camps into a hideout to extort innocent citizens, using its name. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/massob-leader-warns-igbo-resident-north-return-home/ |
Other Sports of 2014-08-04 Judo: Ghana competed with borrowed uniforms… Ghana’s Judo team, was compelled to compete with borrowed uniforms at the just ended 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. According to information reaching sportscrusader.com, the Judokas had to rely on borrowed uniforms because the ones arranged for the team were not available as at the time of competition. In addition, the uniforms had no Ghana flags on them, a situation which brings to fore some of the organisational challenges that occurred at the Games under the leadership of Prof. Francis Dodoo’s Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC). Federation president, Emmanuel Tetteh confirmed to the media, that the team’s branded costume arrived a day after their competition, compelling them to borrow uniforms which the athletes were not familiar with. He said the team would have done better than just picking a bronze by Razak Abugiri. According to him, the use of the ‘foreign’ custume with no Ghana inscription incurred the displeasure of the competition’s officials to slap Ghana with disqualifications from time to time. Tetteh, who has had issues with members of the GOC, which resulted in the revocation of his accreditation but was later restored, expressed his displeasure over the management of affairs in camp. “Our uniforms arrived just yesterday (Friday) can you imagine that?, when we have finished our events. These are some of the things we complain about and they say we want to run them down. “We were bent on winning more medals if the right things were done, because I invested in the team and they showed great promise in their preparations.. “We were disqualified on number of occasions because we didn’t use the right uniforms, when you ask why things are not done right they think you hate them or you want to pull them down.” Tetteh said. Judo clinched Ghana’s first medal(Bronze) until boxing made it two also a bronze in the Games which ended with a spectacular closing ceremony yesterday. Source: sportscrusader.com |
