Programming › Re: Chronicle Of A Data Scientist/analyst by Hx1x: 10:07pm On Jan 09, 2025 |
I remember peeping at this thread sometime in 2021 or so. At that time I was still at a job earning 65k AUD here in Australia, which at that time was like entry level or graduate level salary.
After seeing this thread, I decided to work on my skills. Note that I already had a bit of knowledge about SQL, Tableau and python. However, I began learning and improving my python skills for automating things and then gradually started learning how to use it to ingest and analyse data.
I spent about 3 months building different data projects and learning many things along the way. Experience is really the best teacher, you learn how to and how not to do things.
Back then, there was no chatgpt, so had to look up and read documentation manually.
I visited kaggle and saw many data science projects and started to learn. Then proceeded to build my own machine learning projects.
I packaged all these projects and put them in my cv and started applying for jobs.
I got 5 job offers in the space of 1.5 months. Did many interviews, can't even remember how many.
Fast forward to today, I've grown and had multiple promotions - now earning close to 150k aud.
My advice to those starting out is to not spend too much time on tutorials. The best way I learnt quickly was to apply the knowledge by actually building stuff.
Apart from the technical skills, you also need need presentation skills, people skills (very important in the Australian corporate culture), story telling skills, etc.
I can't go in-depth. But like other people have mentioned, never give up. In those 3 months I spent building things, I never went out. I only go to the office, come back home and continue from where I stopped. I even used to take my personal laptop to work so I could continue learning and building during my lunch break.
It paid off big time!!! |

Business › Can't Send Dollars To Nigeria Any More by Hx1x(op): 3:33am On Feb 09, 2024 |
Just got this email from WorldRemit.
Seems CBN has quietly re-introduced their policy where people abroad can no longer send foriegn currency directly to folks in Nigeria. Folks in Nigeria now can only receive the naira equivalent of the money sent.
I've checked Western Union and seems to be the same as well. Moneygram still allows dollars to be sent, but can only be picked up. Can't send to a dorm account any more.
I have checked and haven't seen any news on this.
