A former Chief of Army Staff and Minister of Interior, General Abdulrahman Dambazau, has said activities of terrorists and members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra constitute a major threat to the 2023 elections.

He spoke while delivering a paper titled, “2023 Politics: National Security and Nigeria’s Stability” at the Blueprint Newspapers’ annual lecture in Abuja on Tuesday.

Dambazau questioned, “Would insecurity affect the 2023 elections?” before responding that, “Surely it would, because some of the community would still be displaced and the terrorists would likely continue attacks on soft targets.

“INEC officials and ad-hoc staff would be highly apprehensive despite the assurance by the government to protect them. Access to polling units in border communities may pose some difficulties. This is one more reason why adequate security must be provided.”

A Nigerian movie star, Yul Edochie has condemned the action of those mocking the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu over his alleged ill-health.

In a recent tweet on his official Twitter handle, the Nollywood actor wondered why a section of Nigerians, particularly those opposing Tinubu’s presidential bid, would mock his (Tinubu) health and age.

According to Yul, old age is a blessing and sickness can happen to anybody, stressing that some of those making mockery of Tinubu may not be lucky to see old age.

He wrote, “Old age is a blessing. And sickness can happen to any one whether young or old. Making a mockery of Tinubu’s health or age is wrong.

“It’s ok if he’s not your candidate, but making jest of him cos of his age or health is absolutely wrong. You may not be lucky to see old age”.

Four police officers were killed Friday night when gunmen attacked Agwa Divisional Police Headquarters in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria’s South-east.

The incident, which happened around 10 p.m., has caused fear among residents.

The gunmen also razed a section of the facility and some operational vehicles within the premises.

They were said to have stormed the area in three vehicles —- a tipper and two sienna cars –— and opened fire on the facility, killing the officers in the process.

A resident told PREMIUM TIMES he heard several gunshots in the night at the police facility, but could not say the number of officers killed in the attack.

“It was this morning that we came out and saw corpses of policemen there. I am not sure how many of them were killed, but I saw up to four (bodies),” he said.

The police spokesperson in the state, Michael Abattam, did not respond to calls and a text message seeking comments from him on the attack.

Like other states in Nigeria’s South-east, security has deteriorated in Imo State, with frequent attacks by armed persons.

The attacks often target security agencies, government officials and facilities.

The latest incident came barely 24 hours after some gunmen attacked a residence of a police inspector in Orogwe, a community in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state. Two of the gunmen were killed in that attack.

Last week, gunmen invaded the same Orogwe Community and killed seven security guards.

The Nigerian government has accused the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra of being responsible for the deadly attacks in the region. But the group has repeatedly denied their involvement in the attacks.

The separatist group is leading the agitation for an independent state of Biafra which they want carved out from the South-east and some parts of the South-south Nigeria.

The leader of the secessionist group, Nnamdi Kanu, is detained in Abuja where he is facing trial for terrorism

The North where people no longer travel?

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is planning mega rallies in the United Kingdom cities for the actualization of Biafra and demanding the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu who is in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), Vanguard has learnt.

According to the information being circulated on social media on Friday, the separatist group will stage three rallies in three UK cities which are Milton Keynes, Leicester and Liverpool on August 27, September 10 and October 16, 2022 respectively.

In the e-flier titled “IPOB UK Summer Mega Rallies’, the October rally will hold at Premier League club, Liverpool’s stadium, Anfield before their match against Manchester City.

Kanu’s lawyers Ifeanyi Ejiofor and Aloy Ejimakor confirmed the story to Vanguard. Ejiofor said, “Confirmed. It’s correct.”

Ejimakor said, “Rallies like this have escalated across Europe and North America since the extraordinary rendition of Nnamdi Kanu. There was one like this in Brussels a few weeks ago and it drew thousands. The frequency of these rallies is a testimony to the determination of a people to the immediate task of releasing Kanu from detention. I think the world has taken notice”.

IPOB has been demanding that the Nigerian government should conduct a referendum to let the South East residents have a sovereign nation of Biafra, and recently the call for the unconditional release of Kanu has been added to the agitation.
