There was panic in Orogwe community in the Owerri Local Government Area of Imo State after seven people were shot dead after gunmen invaded the community on Monday night.

Community sources who did not want to be mentioned told our correspondent that while seven persons had died other victims were rushed to the Emergency Unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, the state capital.

According to them, trouble started after security operatives suspected to be members of Ebubeagu Security outfit came to the village and whisked a youth away.

Some gunmen in retaliation stormed the community and began shooting sporadically.

One of the sources said, “Ebubeagu people came and took away a youth from the community. On Monday night, some men with guns came to the community and stormed a building site and opened fire. Seven persons died while others wounded were rushed to the FMC Owerri.

“An okada man who was driving through was caught in the crossfire. He was rushed to the FMC Owerri emergency unit where medical personnel are battling to save his life and others. This is so unfortunate. The community is in panic. People are running away,” he said.

A source at the FMC Owerri told our correspondent that the emergency unit of the hospital was jampacked with anxious friends, relatives and well-wishers of the victims and injured ones who had stormed the hospital.

He told our correspondent that the hospital had confirmed six dead bodies.

He said, “The emergency unit is filled. Many people here. The unit is rowdy. Six dead bodies are here while others that are critically injured are being attended to by medical personnel.”

The police spokesperson for the state command, Micheal Abattam, did take his calls when contacted by our correspondent as of the time of filing this report. An SMS sent to his phone number to confirm the incident was not replied to either.

But a source told our correspondent that security operatives had visited the hospital on Tuesday.

Another community source told our correspondent that Orogwe community had been deserted on Tuesday as Ebubeagu operatives were allegedly in the community arresting young people.

The House of Representatives has faulted the alleged omission of Anambra and Enugu states from the ongoing National Agricultural Growth Scheme of the Federal Government.

At the plenary on Wednesday, the House urged the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to “revisit this omission with a view to including these two states in the project.”

The House also mandated its Committee on Agricultural Production and Services to ensure compliance with the resolution.

This was based on a motion titled ‘Call on the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to include Anambra and Enugu States in the Ongoing National Agricultural Growth Scheme (NAGS) Under ATASP-l,’ which the lawmakers unanimously adopted.

Sponsors of the motion, Messrs Vincent Ofumelu, Chinedu Obidigwe, Simon Atigwe and Dennis Amadi, noted that NAGS, which is under ATASP-1 being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, failed to capture Anambra and Enugu.

The lawmakers noted that the perceived oversight might not be deliberate in view of the pivotal role both states play in terms of agricultural production.

Moving the motion, Ofumelu said, “The House is worried that if nothing is done in this regard, the tendency that these states will be left out is very high. The House is concerned that the non-inclusion of these states in the project would definitely affect the progress already recorded in the past years. The House is also concerned that many farmers who are currently yearning and waiting for intervention would end up disappointed.”

The Anambra State Police command has neutralised no fewer than 10 gunmen and destroyed three camps habouring the criminals in Achalla, Awka North Local Government Area.
The state police spokesperson, Toochukwu Ikenga, in a statement on Saturday, said the attack took place on Friday.
Ikenga said the criminals had earlier captured two policemen and a civilian who was described as a car tracker, who had joined the policemen in their operation, with the aim of recovering a stolen vehicle.
He added that the hoodlums murdered their captives (two policemen and the civilian) and set their bodies ablaze.
He said the police however reinforced and dislodged the criminals, leading to the killing of over 10 of them, while many others escaped with bullet injuries.
He said, “During the operation, police recovered a human skull, one locally made rocket propelled grande RPG launcher, two bombs, one single-barrel long gun, an empty chain of bullet.
“Other recovered items include; one Toyota Sienna, one Mercedes Benz 4matic jeep, two cylinders, a huge quantity of hard drugs and other items, including a police beret and a police belt.”
“The recovery came following a counter-offensive operation launched against criminal elements who had on 15/7/2022 laid an ambush against a six-man police team and a civilian car tracker who were on a recovery operation of a Toyota Sienna space wagon.
“The vehicle was earlier snatched at gun point on 9/7/2022 in Oye-Agu Abagana. Four of the police operatives escaped the ambush, while two of the police operatives and the car tracker were captured by the criminals.”
Ikenga further stated that during the counter-offensive operation, police operatives neutralized over 10 of the armed men and destroyed three of their camps.
“Unfortunately, some of the hoodlums escaped with bullet wounds. They had murdered their captives (two policemen and a civilian) and set their bodies ablaze.
“The remains of the two murdered police officers and the civilian car-tracker have been recovered and deposited in a morgue, while police operation is still ongoing in the area to track the fleeing gang members.”
Ikenga quoted the state Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng, as condoling with the families and friends of the murdered civilians and the police operatives, describing the incident as a classic example of the risk and sacrifices the police are exposed to in the onerous task of serving and protecting the country.
Echeng also assured Anambra people that efforts were being intensified towards total reclamation and domination of all the public spaces occupied by hoodlums in the state by apprehending and bringing them and their accomplices to justice.
