Syenite:

A least another geologist is speaking.
Let me start by faulting you idea on which is source, reservoir and Cap rock. The Campanian Lokoja Formation which is sitting unconformably on the Precambrian Basement complex is a stratigraphical equivalent  of the Bida sandstone. And so cannot serve as a source rock because it has little shale composition. SANDSTONES DON’T SERVE AS SOURCE ROCKS OK? Secondly the fact that the Maastrichtian Agbaja formation, which is predominantly Ironstone, lies stratigraphically above the Lokoja Formation and Patti Formation does not make it a cap rock. That is not the definition of a ‘cap rock ‘.

My view-after carrying out more research on the Stratigraphy and hrdro-carbon potential I can to find out that this community will likely fall under the Lokoja sub-basin which falls also within the Nupe/Basin basin. The Stratigraphy is of the sequence: Lokoja Formation (sitting unconformably on the Basement complex), Patti Formation and then the Agbaja formation (the youngest). The rocks range from Campanian to Maastrichtian in age. The Lithology of the oldest formation which could have housed the source rock  for any possibility of hydrocarbon generation is unfortunately predominantly sandtones with little pockets of shales. Hence, the sub-basin does not have a good source rock for oil. However this does not rule out the fact that oil can be trapped in it or overlying formations because of a possibility of secondary migration of oil from adjacent sub-basins. Now, there is little amount of clay in the Agbaja Formation but the law of isostacy does not permit oil to migrate downwards.

By and large, my conclusion is that even though it is possible to find pockets of oil within this sub-basin they would have been produced from the little amounts of shale present within the Lokoja and Patti Formations or probably a product of secondary migration of oil from adjacent sub-basins. Hence the chance of discovering oil in commercial quantity is very very slim.
My apologies to those who are not of the geology background. The topic is more of geology than politics because politics cannot bring oil there but only geology can. Thanks

I based my  on the fact that Bida basin is a lateral extension of the Anambra basin which has the Campanian Nkporo(shale) formation as the source rock, which may have some equivalents in the lokoja formation, being overlain by Mamu(Reservoir) whose lateral equivalent is the Patti formation and the yougest being the Lower Maastritchian Ajali formation which is laterally equivalent to the Agbaja formation.

In terms of the sediment thickness, the Anambra basin is up to 8km thickness compared with an average of 3.4km sediment thickness of the bida basin(Akande 1998).

My geology might be rusty as you pointed out ,but i still know the difference between a reservoir, cap and source rock.

2good:

Da Doctor,
I agree with the English deficiency you pointed out which is because of their disadvantaged past that cannot be erased but the issue here is NNPC aptitude test, so dont deviate from the topic. Also if you have worked in a multinational, you would have noticed that many of these so call experts find it very very difficult to converse in good English and dont struggle to be managers where they will be expected to be giving presentation all the time but develop themselves better in the technical part of their job which even though the boss understand their language deficiency, still cannot do without they technical ability.

I agree with 2good here, i have met many of there so called engineers(DPR and NNPC) who have never been to the rig or production platform before and they claim 15yrs experience.
Before you can make a first class or 2:1 from a federal University, you must be very good academically.
Multinationals dont care about your spoken English is just your ability to learn fast and deliver. The experienced guys that wrote the NNPC test told me its just a joke. They gave them SS3 physics and chemistry to solve, how do you expect them to pass?

Geologists have worked extensively on the Bida basin and it is well documented.

The basin is a Northwestern extension of the Anambra basin

The basin fill comprises a Northwest trending belt of upper cretaceous sedimentary rocks that were deposited as a result of block faulting and some other factors. Let us leave the geological terms.

I presume that ara-Orin is at the Southern part of the basin which consists of three different formation namely;the lokoja,Patti and the agbada formation.

The Lokoja formation directly overly the basement complex(300m thick) and it consists of Shale,it is overlain by the Patti formation that is made up of alternating shale, silstones, and sandstones (70-100m thick) and suceeded by the Agbaja formation (claystones, concretionary silstone and ironstone).

I feel that the lokoja formation might be the source rock, while the Patti(reservoir) and Agbaja(Cap rock).

It is possible but i dont think it will be in a commercial quantity.

Until geophysical exploration of the area is carried out no one can tell.

I am not a regular contributor on this forum but i monitor some of the threads. When it comes to the oil sector, Nigeria can boast of experts and professionals(Nigeria trained) in every field and we are highly respected throughout the world.

@ The one.
Why are you displaying your ignorance on this forum.Have you ever worked in an oilfield before? Why dont you keep quite and allow the intellects to contribute.
I am a geologist and i have worked in different countries. We have qualified geologists in Nigeria and the difference between tar sand and Crude oil is clear.
If you go to an area in Uganda(where i worked),you will see crude oil oozing out(not bitumen or tar sand).
Crude is very easy to test.

Politics / Former Speaker Bankole Arrested by ibrokay(m): 9:18pm On Jun 05, 2011
Economic and Financial Commission have finally arrested outgoing Speaker Dimeji Bankole of the house of representatives.

An EFCC source told Saharareporters moments ago that the agency operatives moved in today to arrest Mr. Bankole after the agency received intelligence was planning to flee tonight.

For the past one week, the EFCC and Bankole have been engaged in a tense stand off arising from Mr. Bankole's refusal to answer the agency's summons for interrogation over series of corruption allegations.

Saharareporters exclusively broke the news that the EFCC investigators had linked Mr Speaker to an account at the United Banker of Africa (UBA) through which the outgoing speaker had laundered about $1 billion.

A source at the EFCC told SaharaReporters that agency was able to arrest the speaker today as soon as it discovered he had planned to escape from Nigeria early tomorrow morning.

Last Friday EFCC agents had made an attempt to arrest the speaker from his residence but that had been rebuffed by Mr. Bankole's security protection.

I hope this man will be held accountable for all the atrocities he committed while in office.

Just to educate you.
Those terminologies you are reffering to are
Geological terms and so many people on this forum can
differentiate between granite and gravel.
The picture Midas posted shows large grained GRAVEL
and not granite as you claim.
Properties / Re: The Real Cost Of Building A Six Bedroom Duplex by ibrokay(m): 2:51am On Apr 08, 2011
This thread is quite Educating and i have learnt quite a lot from it.
I am also building a 4BR bungalow in Ibadan and i have been following this thread since its opening.
@Midas,
Thanks for your post, you are a true possessional.
@Am alone
We appreciate your contribution on this thread.
Perhaps,i am making this comment because of the ignorance you are trying to
display when it comes to this granite/gravel issue.
The fact that you used Granite for your construction does not make
it a better aggregate.
The gravel obtained in the South western part of Nigeria are mixed with dirt because they
are dug from the ground(note that gravels are bigger sizes of sand) and that is why it has a lot
of sand in it, you cannot compare it with those deposited by river banks.
Due to erosion and distance of travel(through stream or river) Gravels are eroded, transported
and separated into different sizes. The source of your gravel will determine how pure is going going to be
The gravel that you will find at the upper part of streams are always bigger than those
found at the middle and lower region.

but that doesn't make it unsuitable for construction works.
What i will recommend is for you to make sure that the quantity of the big sizes are
much more than the small sizes.
We are all on this thread to learn and i will advise you to open your mind
and learn from the professionals rather than putting up unnecessary arguments.

Your house will stand a test of time if the proper mixture is done regardless of
whether you use granite or gravel.
