To lessen its detrimental effects on Nigerians, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been encouraged to rethink its naira swap policy by the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola.
Fashola responded to the outcry over the widespread scarcity of the N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes since they were introduced on November 23, 2022, during a live appearance on Channels Television’s The 2023 Verdict on Monday.

The CBN states that from February 10, 2023, the old version of those denominations will no longer be accepted as legal cash as the top bank pursues illicit money hoarders ahead of the federal elections.

The minister bemoaned the difficulties caused by the apex bank’s instruction and emphasized the need of public officeholders reviewing their policies when they had the reverse of what was intended.

“I empathise with those challenges but some of them are the result of policy and it is the responsibility of public servants, especially those responsible for those policies to look back and say, ‘Did we intend to cause this pain?’

“And if the policy is not working, perhaps you have to readjust and to also ask yourself whether you thought this through. As a public officer, before and now, I have had cause to reverse myself, when I saw that my policies were causing unintended results.

“So, I have no responsibility on those two areas and therefore I cannot speak to the details of the facts that are available to the policymakers but the important thing is that those policies are not yet delivering the results and are delivering a lot of inconvenience for [people],” he said.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo met with Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo and Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The trio met over the weekend at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, according to Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi.

At the inaugural Stakeholders’ conference of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)-Nigeria Business Council, held over the weekend at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, the Obasanjo met with El-Rufai and Soludo.

At the meeting, Obasanjo, who is the Council Patron, “commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his foresight in creating the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – Nigeria Business Council.”

El-Rufai, who is the Deputy President of the Council, was said to have broken the news while giving a report of his meeting with the President held recently in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

El-Rufai said “the President was excited about the Council. He said with such Council in Africa, the future will be brighter to work together.”

“Mr. President urged the former President to use his energy and network to extend similar formations in countries like Egypt, Ethiopia and South Africa,” the Kaduna State governor added

The meeting also had in attendance, the President of the Council and the immediate past Director General of the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Dr. Nteranya Sanginga; top government officials from DRC and others.

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has said that a new Nigeria where true democracy will be in place is possible.
Obi who made the declaration Friday during a town hall meeting in Umuahia, Abia State, said he was not in the presidential race because it was his turn but because “it is the turn of Nigerians to take back their country” from the few holding the country by the jugular.

He promised to reset the country and do things differently if voted into power at the February 25 presidential poll.

“We are going to build a new Nigeria. Yes, a new Nigeria is possible and that’s why I’m in the race.

I will build a new Nigeria where we shall all be proud of the green passport. I will build a new Nigeria where we shall move from consumption to production”, he said.

The former Anambra State Governor regretted that the two major political parties – the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC; and the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had both, supervised the deterioration of Nigeria. He urged Nigerians to reject both parties at the forthcoming polls and vote in Labour Party for a better country.

According to him, “APC has given us insecurity and hunger, fuel scarcity and ASUU strike. No state in Nigeria is safe again. If given the opportunity, I will restructure the entire security architecture of Nigeria to provide security for all citizens.

“We have voted for the umbrella but we didn’t get any protection. We voted for the broom but it has swept us into poverty and hardship. All we got from APC and PDP are hunger and suffering.

“Now, it’s time to vote for the father, mother and children (LP logo). What we need now is the family so that we can recover from our fallen state.”

Obi promised not to discriminate against any part of Nigeria, vowing that under his watch, tribalism and injustice will no longer be a norm.

He predicted landslide victory for himself based on his competence and national appeal, saying he was under a mandate to give hope to Nigerian youths.

“I’m not going to win because I’m from South East but because I’m competent and ready to build a new Nigeria. I’m prepared to lead Nigeria out of poverty to greatness. I have done it before in Anambra, I will replicate the feat in the entire country if you give me a chance”, he said.

The Labour Party presidential hopeful promised to end incessant strikes by university staff, saying that under his watch Nigeria will be restructured to work for her citizens. Obi also promised to transform Aba and make it a renowned industrial hub in Africa.

He said, “I visited Aba in the morning and I saw that we have over 60,000 shoemakers in Aba. Industrial activities going on in Aba will be properly harnessed. Give me two years and Aba and Port Harcourt will join together. I’m not going to change the name but both towns will be so developed that they will become one City, and people won’t know the difference between them again.”

Obi also promised to tap into the vast arable land in the North to make Nigeria the highest food-exporting country in Africa. “The biggest asset in Nigeria is the uncultivated land in the North yet we can’t feed ourselves. The Netherlands has a smaller landmass with a lesser human population but it is an agricultural giant”, Obi noted adding with visionary and competent leadership in place, Nigeria did not need to be borrowing around.

A CBN joint security operation with EFCC & ICPC, busted a bank, where over ₦287,000,000 redesigned new Naira notes were stacked and hoarded from members of the desperate public by a bank Manager.
The new notes were hidden behind old notes in a video shared online.

In the video, bank workers are seen bringing out the new notes from where they were stacked behind the old notes.

An official can be heard in the video demanding that the new Naira notes that she had seen be loaded in the banks’ Automated Teller Machines so that customers can have access to money.

This comes as many Nigerians battle with cash unavailability.

Simisanya of the hype squad was spotted spraying wads of the new naira note at a party. The interesting part is that she was the only one spraying money while others around were hailing her as the musician sing with her name.
In the video, she wasn’t spraying the money on anyone, rather she was spraying the wads of cash, inside a black bag.

You will recall that Nigerian actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, popularly known as Simisola Gold, was arrested by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), after the video of her spraying and stepping on the newly redesigned Naira notes at a party surfaced online the EFCC later waded into the case.

The Nollywood star Mr. Ibu’s wife, Stella Maris, has criticized him for suspected domestic abuse. The two appeared to be engaged in a heated argument in a now-viral video, with the actor shouting at Maris.

“One or two things happened and it became a quarrel so we went out to settle it. I didn’t know she has something to push out on social media.

“When came back from the police station, she started saying all sorts of things about me. She insulted my daughter and said all hell of things about her.

“She also insulted me, saying different things on air. I didn’t do anything to her.”

The actor also dismissed the claim that Jasmine was his girlfriend and not his daughter.

Daniel Okafor, the second son of the actor, who also graced the live session, spoke on the matter.

“She (Jasmine) is 100 per cent (my father’s) daughter, not biological but adopted right from childhood,” he said.

“Maris, who is my step-mother, is being brainwashed by her friends….my own mother is married to another man, but she is in Lagos.”

Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State, promised on Thursday to reveal who the “cabals” in the Aso Villa are.
The threat from El-Rufai comes a day after he said that Bola Tinubu, the APC’s presidential candidate, is being targeted by certain individuals in the Aso Villa.

Because their candidate did not win the APC’s presidential primaries, the Kaduna State Governor asserted that the cabals are against Tinubu.

El-Rufai, however, stated in a TVC interview on Thursday that Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election would lead to the disclosure of the cabal’s identity.

El-Rufai said, “Unmasking them (cabals) is not as joyful as defeating them.

“They will be unmasked in time. We have defeated them when they wanted their people on the national working committee of the APC. We have defeated them when they wanted their own anointed person to be the presidential candidate without due regard, due process or even respect for those of us who are governors, that put the party together, campaign for it and deliver the election twice.

“We didn’t matter, we are governors and (people saying) governors are corrupt, they are bad, meanwhile, none of them has contested an election and won an election and if they did they won’t win.

“I have been elected twice with over a million votes as governor of Kaduna State, I can claim to speak for the people, (but) none of these (cabals) can. We will come to the unmasking stage; this is not the stage. The stage now is to draw the attention of Nigerians that there are elements that are doing this and they don’t mean well to our party, they want to incite voters against our party so that we lose the election.

“Now once Nigerians know that they will know where the funny decisions are coming from and once the election is done and settled, by the grace of God in about three weeks and I am confident, we are not sleeping, we are going to work hard until 27 February when the election results are out and by the grace of God, Bola Tinubu is elected and other candidates of the APC, then we will unmask them (Cabals).”
