Politics / 2015: The Battle For The Soul Of Lagos By Dele Momodu by Iceman296: 4:37pm On Nov 29, 2014
There is no doubt that Lagos is the most important State in our dearly beloved country. Once upon a time, it was our Federal capital before Abuja was carved out in what was supposed to be the centre of Nigeria. The idea for Abuja was not entirely new or original. I was told during a visit to Australia about six years ago, that the master-plan emanated from Canberra, the seat of government in that country. I used to think Sydney was the Capital, or even Melbourne.

But I was kindly educated by the then Nigerian High Commissioner to Australia, Professor Olu Agbi, a Diplomatic Historian, who made sure I visited Canberra. I truly saw some similarities between Abuja and Canberra except that Abuja remains a chaotic ersatz, a shambolic attempt at emulating a masterpiece.

Despite the migration of the Federal capital from Lagos to Abuja, Lagos has continued being the nerve-centre of Nigeria, our own veritable New York. Every Nigerian is a stakeholder in Lagos because practically everyone has one link or the other to what is probably the most exciting city on the African continent. This is why Lagos has become a microcosm of Nigeria by representing every culture, tradition, religion, socio-political belief of the nation. Lagos reflects the American dream that anyone can aspire, whether stranger or not, due to its assimilative spirit.

For this reason, Lagos has become the toast and target of most politicians.
Whosoever controls Lagos has Nigeria by the neck. This is probably the only State that can snub the notorious Federal Allocation and still survive. This was tested in those days of acrimony between President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Bola Tinubu when the statutory allocation to Lagos was stopped by Presidential fiat. The Governor of Lagos is as good as a mini-President. Amongst Governors he is clearly primus inter pares. Who wouldn’t want to be in that position? This is why the battle for the soul of Lagos is going to be a Third World War, without any shade of doubt.

Let’s now come down to brass tacks and open up the anatomy of Lagos politics. Since 1999, only a particular Party metamorphosing into different parties has held sway in Lagos. Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu rode on the crest of the pro-June 12 struggles and advocacy to become the Governor. He governed the State for two terms spanning eight years and was able to pass the baton effortlessly to his former Chief of Staff, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN). By next year, Governor Fashola would also have served two terms of four years each and it would be time to hand over power. In theory, the ruling party in Lagos is supposed and expected to retain its stranglehold without any major challenge from the opposition PDP. But let me say categorically that it is not going to be that simple. Permit me to deliver my permutations.

The APC looks good on paper but it has gargantuan challenges ahead. The party is currently a house divided against itself and may collapse if care is not taken. The main actors are the former Governor Tinubu and his political godson and current Governor Fashola. Tinubu believes that he’s the biggest investor and shareholder in the Lagos conglomerate and as such should have the final say in who takes over from Fashola. For now, he has already picked his choice in a former Accountant-General of Lagos, Mr Akin Ambode, but this decision has produced unprecedented sour grapes and overt dissension within the rank and file of the party.

On the other hand, Fashola feels that as the occupier of the exalted seat, he should be entitled to the privilege Tinubu enjoyed at the expiration of his tenure by also picking his own successor. Unfortunately, his former boss does not agree. As a matter of fact, Tinubu had grudgingly agreed to a second term for Fashola when it became obvious that his protégé’s rising profile was too massive to be toyed with. Never mind their public comportment, their relationship has been frosty, a cat and mouse affair, and it is doubtful that they would ever agree to a consensus candidate. Governor Fashola wants his former Attorney-General, Mr Supo Shasore to succeed him but Asiwaju Tinubu won’t permit any such heresy. If it was just a mere race between Ambode and Shasore, the latter would have been a surer bet because Fashola would have thrown anything and everything to the fire. But his boss has blatantly disregarded such opportunity.

The problem does not end there. It is further compounded by the motley crowd of other distinguished aspirants who want true Democracy in their party. The hard-core politicians amongst them are raising dust, railing, screaming and kicking against the imposition of someone they consider at the very best a bystander, if not an outsider, who wants to reap where he did not sow. The Tinubu/Ambode camp is responding by saying Fashola himself was a product and beneficiary of imposition. The brickbats continue.

As at the last count, about ten or more other aspirants have picked up nomination forms. This unwieldy number should be ominous to APC and Tinubu in particular. Tinubu has, till now, failed to get them to drop their collective aspirations for Ambode. Many friends of Tinubu are worried stiff about the possible demystification of Tinubu as the ultimate powerhouse in Lagos if he continues to stubbornly support Ambode and maintain that his choice must prevail. It is sad that most people tell him what they know he wants to hear and say ugly things behind his back. They make reference to how Tinubu’s fabled war chest could not save Ondo and Ekiti States and his former kingdom is shrinking by the day because of his obstinate disposition.

There are never-before-seen frontal attacks against Tinubu. While it seems the Governor has chosen not to fight his mentor publicly, his proxies have picked up the gauntlet. Most of the former cabinet members have decided to back one of their own Mr Supo Shasore, born on January 22, 1964, with everything necessary. This has provided him with veritable political platforms across the State which he lacks as he is only a consummate lawyer and seasoned technocrat. It would be difficult if not impossible to win an election in any part of Nigeria without grassroots support and mobilisation. It is believed that Tinubu has become a third party spender and may not have the singular financial muscle of Fashola & Friends when the time comes to fight this battle.

The biggest threat to Ambode comes from one of Tinubu’s core-loyalists, Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, the only Speaker who has served three terms in a House of Assembly in Nigeria. He’s believed to be Tinubu’s secret weapon if politicians reject Ambode outright as things stand at the moment. Ikuforiji has a wealth of experience as he’s served under both Tinubu and Fashola and must have been privy to most of the government activities in Lagos.

There is a major hitch in Tinubu’s Ambode project which was anchored on the blind loyalty of the 57 Local Government Chairmen whose tenure, unfortunately, expired in October, and they have not been reappointed as Executive Secretaries, which was the practice in the past. Inevitably, the war of the Titans in Lagos may not only emasculate the ambitions of any APC candidate it may also badly jeopardise the chances of any APC Presidential candidate next February. The open secret fear in APC circles is that Tinubu by trade with President Jonathan if he fails to get his iron grip on APC as was the case in ACN where his word was Law. He’s being resisted and frustrated over Ambode and also failing to field his choice as Vice Presidential candidate.

The APC National Legal Adviser, Dr Muiz Banire has boldly come out to warn about the danger this issue of imposition poses to the good health of the party. Banire was only echoing the loud whispers from behind the scene. The intractable squabble in Lagos is fast becoming an embarrassment to members and sympathisers of the party who find the conflict resolution apparatus of the party most appalling. Everyone is asking why at this late hour a party promoting change does not have a list of elected delegates that can be given to aspirants for verification and authentication. The party elders are expected to intervene speedily or watch the party haemorrhage to death on the altar of vaunting ambitions.

The APC Lagos should watch out for the PDP candidate which should be a straight fight between Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and Mr Jimi Agbaje. I foresee Obanikoro picking the ticket for many reasons. Mr Jimi Agbaje was the 2007 gubernatorial candidate of the Democratic People’s Alliance (DPA), who defected to PDP. It is unnatural for politicians who have bonded together for so long to “dash” their ticket to a newcomer, as they see Agbaje. Besides, many believe Agbaje is too gentle to face the APC onslaught in Lagos.

Obanikoro has no rival in today’s PDP. He’s the most prepared politician who has gone the full gamut over the years. Born in 1957, Obanikoro joined politics as soon as he returned from his studies in the United States where he bagged a B.Sc in Public Affairs and Master’s in Public Administration. He cut his teeth as Chairman Caretaker Committee of Surulere Local Government. He won election as State Deputy Chairman of the National Republican Convention. The Miracle Governor, Sir Michael Otedola appointed him Director, Lagos State Bulk Purchasing Corporation as well as member Lagos State Football Association. He has been a delegate at all levels from Local Government Congress to State Congress and ultimately, National Convention. He was elected State Secretary of the influential Justice Forum and Chairman of the powerful Lagos Island Local Government.

Obanikoro became Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture in 1999 and was extremely close to Tinubu. He won his Senatorial election in 2003 and fought an epic electoral battle against Tinubu’s candidate, Fashola in 2007. It is not for fun that he earned the sobriquet of KORO IBO (the vote poacher). He has since been a very successful High Commissioner to The Republic of Ghana and was until recently the Minister of State for Defence.

I’m surprised that APC is about to underrate such a man by fighting a needless war of attrition when PDP is virtually ready with a candidate who knows their tactics too well. If Tinubu succeeds in picking his avowed candidate, Ambode, as APC flagbearer, anything can happen in Lagos.

Many politicians have sworn to teach Tinubu a lesson. The historians point not only to the Sir Otedola debacle of the Second Republic but the more recent events which led to the ouster of Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala in Oyo State. As I told Ambode when he invited me to a meeting, his biggest strength is also his greatest weakness. He is a fantastic gentleman with intimidating credentials but I wonder how he’s going to pacify those who see him as a mere stooge of Bola Tinubu. That is the crux of the matter.

For APC, it is morning yet on creation day.

Politics / Re: See Aba And Weep. by Iceman296: 9:51am On Nov 27, 2014
That state seriously needs the presence of a Working Government, Even the So called Umuahia is in a Story state.
Politics / See Aba And Weep. by Iceman296: 3:48pm On Nov 26, 2014
“The decay of Aba made a former Governor of the old Imo State (Sam Mbakwe) weep, which was why he was nicknamed the ‘weeping Governor”, Governor Theodore Ahamefule Orji told a pack of bloggers and new media influencers on a warm November night inside the Abia State government House a fortnight ago.

“When I took over as Governor of Abia State, my resolve was not to end up as a weeping Governor”, he had added, clenched fists gracing the table to signal a steely resolve.

It was just as well.

Occupying an area of 49 km² with a population of over 1,000,000 inhabitants, the commercial city of Aba in Abia State had dominated discussions all through our one week tour of the State. Frenzied bloggers and new media influencers made their desire to visit the town clearly known. The government officials who took the posse of sleek gadget users around Umuahia (the State capital) were harangued and chided for stylishly avoiding Aba because it was going to embarrass the State government. In groups and hushed tones, everyone discussed how a trip to Aba (some 57 kilometers away from the serene and quiet Umuahia) was going to be a referendum on the Theodore Orji administration and bring the entire tour to an abrupt end.

We didn’t have to wait for much longer.

Mr Eze Chikamnayo–a smooth talker who had only recently resigned his position as the Abia State Commissioner for Information in order to pursue a lawmaker ambition—led the convoy of two buses and a handful of cars into Aba on the last day of the tour.

It was the beginning of the tour for the rest of the bloggers but Ekekeee had visited Aba three days earlier in a bid to have an untrammeled feel of the pulse of the inhabitants.

We had resolved during a pre-tour brainstorming session over bananas and groundnuts in the office, to peel off from the rest of the guests after checking into our hotel rooms and to venture out into the streets of Aba for a bit of adventure; away from the avuncular gaze of government personnel.

We wanted to see Aba; the commercial hub of Ochendo’s Abia State; warts and all.

It was for us the commencement of the Abia tour which had been aptly hashtagged #TAOrjiFeedback in the social media space.

Another Sam Mbakwe Is Born

Clutching digital pads, smartphones and scribbling pads, Yours Truly and Emmanuel Nwachukwu joined Ayokunle Odekunle of Ynaija and Kikeowo Ileowo of The Paradigm into Aba aboard a commercial vehicle. We took selfies, chatted and threw jibes all through the ride through Isiala-Ngwa, Amakama, Umunkpeyi and arrived Aba all but worn out from making fun of Jude’s bald pate, Emma’s out-sized skull, Ayokunle’s ‘fake’ spectacles and Ileowo’s ability to smile and remain unperturbed in the midst of it all.

We hopped on a tricycle (Keke Marwa) once in the heart of Aba and ended up on Omoba Road. Because Emma is a denizen of Abia State, we tasked him with asking questions in the Igbo dialect while we taped and scribbled away answers. Our chauffeur, a wiry old man called Boniface from Imo State, had nothing complimentary to say about the Abia State Governor.

“There is no government presence here and this road we are riding on was constructed by the Sam Mbakwe administration. The Governor has long abandoned Aba”, Boniface lamented, while waving a flailing arm across the sea of filth, decay and bedlam that was Aba on Monday November 10th. Refuse heaps rose to meet us as we sidestepped this way and that and the traders encroached into the busy expressway as they hollered at potential buyers.

Once we had alighted from Boniface’s rickety ‘Keke’, we ran into Joachim Obike, a cab driver who operates from one of the cacophonous motor parks in Aba.

“There is nothing like free education here. Do not believe the government”, Obike told us in smattering English and Igbo. He wore a brown shirt that had since turned dark brown from over use and spotted a face cap while gesticulating furiously. “You can see that this governor has abandoned Aba. He treats Aba like some ghetto. He hasn’t done anything. All we see are campaign Ads on TV where he showcases only the few good things he’s done. Governor Orji thinks Aba doesn’t like him because he was once pelted with bags of sachet water when he came here for a campaign visit. So as a punishment, he governs only Umuahia while Aba rots…”

Mr Obike who told us he has five children also added that ‘Ochendo Global’ (as the Abia State Governor is famously called everywhere you turn in the State) has made their own taxi venture less lucrative by floating his own transport buses whose fares are slightly cheaper. “He stopped a road construction project bankrolled by Mr. Emeka Wogu (the former Minister of Labour) because of petty politics. There is no way we’ll vote for Ochendo for the Senate”, Mr Obike snarled.

But he wasn’t done. “There are drainage and flood problems in Ohanka road, Eziama Road, Ogbor Hill, Ahiahia and Onitsha Roads…none of these places bother Ochendo of course. He has a case against Aba obviously.”

Hands submerged in jean pockets, we took a stroll to Park Road by York Street and other surrounding Aba streets. If there was any government presence in Abia State’s commercial capital, it wasn’t immediately visible with magnifying glasses.

Posters of the Governor prodding him to run for the Senate and proclaiming him the anointed one and ‘God sent’ littered the skyline, billboards and buildings. One ‘Ochendo Global’ campaign billboard stood just above a pile of waste and fecal matter on a busy Aba street.

During the interactive session with the Governor, someone had asked him why he was heading to the Senate instead of giving a younger person the opportunity to do so.

“It is the people that are pushing me to go to the Senate. I cannot disobey my people otherwise I’ll be causing problems for myself. I have never experienced the legislature. Let me go and experience it now”, T.A Orji said.

Back to our Aba trip, my friends and I hailed another ‘Keke’ to Ariaria market through the Federal Government abandoned Port Harcourt –Aba Road. Like the Aba market, the drainages were clogged with refuse and overflowed with greenish sewage water.

But given that Aba still sticks out like a sore thumb in spite of all he says he’s been doing to get the melting pot of the State right, is Governor Theodore Orji worried?

“To get a kobo in revenues from the people of Aba is difficult”, the Governor said with resignation, “But we’ll keep giving it our best shot. People accuse us of not focusing on Aba but it costs me a lot more to embark on a project in Aba than in Umuahia or elsewhere. Aba is a peculiar city. But what people do is that they take pictures of the bad areas of Aba and splash on the internet”, the Governor lamented.

As we returned to Aba from Ariaria to make the trip back to Umuahia, Emmanuel Nwachukwu whose home lies just a few kilometers from Aba, broke down in tears as respondent after respondent lamented government neglect and deprivation in the city.

We had sauntered into Aba in high spirits but exited the city (after a long wait for a commercial transporter) through Ogbor Hill, with a crying son of the soil on our hands.

Decades after Governor Sam Mbakwe wept uncontrollably at the sight of an Aba that appeared to have defied all solutions, a scion from another generation had let his emotions get the better of him in the sprawling city.

And not even ‘Ochendo Global’ must have seen it coming.

Okudaya...

These things happen on a daily basis. Early last year, we were registering students for a new term when we were jolted by a ruckus near the admin block. The parent of one of the students had fainted and she was being revived. What happened? A colleague of mine, I will call her Mrs A, took ill during the yuletide period and died a few days to Christmas. Mrs A was well loved by staff, students and parents alike, so when we got the news it was quite shocking and devastating for everybody. Mrs A, being a muslim, was buried before resumption of the new term, so what we the staff members came to meet was a notice of her obituary on the school walls. It was this notice that the parent who fainted saw, while her child the student wept beside her.

When the lady was revived, what she told us chilled everyone to their bone marrows and had the catholics in our midst making the sign of the cross.

On the 30th of December, she was driving her daughter, our student, home from a function when she saw Mrs A walking on the side of the road, dressed in white and cream Iro and buba and gele. She stopped her vehicle, exchanged pleasantries with Mrs A and offered her a lift. Mrs A had smiled and declined, insisting that she was almost at her destination. When the parent was about to drive off, Mrs A admonished the woman's daughter to always be focused in life and wished her well in all her endeavours. The parent thanked her, wished her a happy new year in advance and drove off.

At this point in the narration, the student chipped in that after her mother drove off, she had looked back and noticed that Mrs A stood on the road and kept on waving at them until they were out of her line of sight.

When school resumed, the parent saw Mrs A's obituary notice at the entrance of the admin block. Shocked, she moved closer to read the notice and was further horrified when she saw the date of death. The day of death was a few days to christmas. It was at this point that the poor woman fainted.

Goose pimples popped out all over my body.

I've been hearing tales like the OP for a very long time. This world is a mystery and the things we cannot see are much more than the things we can.

Thanks Ishilove. Happy you've heard of such Story.

Those who doesn't believe me wouldn't unless they experience it First Hand.

I Don't Really Post stories here on Nairaland but I think its Pertinent to share this. Though its a Bit scary but all the same it shows the Importance of Family

This is a true Life story my Grand Mum Told me just Yesterday, I wouldn't say I'm directly related to the Bearer But My Maternal Great Grand dad and his Grand father were siblings. So this Particular guy actually lived in Abuja with his Pregnant Girlfriend, Had some Business In Lagos to tend to, while on his way. He Died.

His Body was Transported home for proper Burial but his family didn't know he had a Pregnant Girlfriend Right in Abuja. He was Buried admist Cries and Wails, to his Family His chapter was Closed since He had no one to Carry his Name on.

His Pregnant Girlfriend Wondered where Her Boyfriend Had been Since it was Months he travelled without hearing from Him. One of those Painful Labour Days women experience, This Guy Reappeared To his Girlfriend in the form of a Normal Living being and assisted her to the Hospital, Paid the Hospital dues and She delivered a Bouncing baby Boy. They lived Happily in Abuja without any hassles or the Girlfriend knowing she was Living with a "Dead Man"

One this fateful Day, The Woman Broached to her Hubby someone Died in her own family and She'll like to attend to burial and Maybe they can visit the Guys People as well so the Family can see the Baby Boy. The guy accepted the Proposal and plans were made for the Journey.

The Burial was Successfully done in the Girl Home town and it was time to Go to the Guy's Village to Show the Family the boy. On getting close to his Family Home, He stopped the wife and gave her some Money for her transport as well as some money to give His Mother. Excused himself saying he was going to use the toilet and Never came back. The stranded Girlfriend stood for Hours and Started asking for the Boys Family since she knew his family name. After series of Inquiries, she got his house and was shocked when they told her her Boyfriend Whom was just with her was actually dead and Buried months ago. She argued and said He just brought her there, She wouldn't have come over to his Family House without his assistance. People doubted her saying she was insane but she stood her ground and Showed them the Money He even gave her to give his Mother"

I asked My Grandma series of questions after I heard this strange but true story, What I actually deduced was that the guy didn't just want his lineage to End that way, Maybe that's why he Reappeared to his Girlfriend and Led her home because without that, They wouldn't have ever Known He had a Child to bear his Name. Him going to the Toilet when they got close to his House was going back to his grave, His work was done and now he can Finally Rest in Peace which I Believe He is.

Family Is Truly Everything
