Job seekers and employees of today tend to overlook employer benefit packages. Everything pretty much ends after they get their dream jobs or dream salary. What happens if you get more than one job offer, or decide to leave your current job? Employee benefit packages can be used as a basis to compare and make decisions on which company to work with. What are employer benefit packages? Employee benefits are non-salary compensation that can vary from firm to firm. Benefits are indirect and non-cash payments within a compensation package. They are provided by organizations in addition to salary to create a competitive package for the potential employee. Employee benefit packages Many employers that are considered to be top companies are not necessarily the ones that pay the most. When you consider all the benefits that a company offers, then you can see the true value of what they provide their employees. These benefits include: retirement plans, medical care, sick and annual leave, sabbatical leave, study leave, maternity leave, child care, sponsorship to conferences and workshops, leave bonuses, work life balance, and university supported benefits. Here’s what to pay attention to when comparing job offers based on employee benefits. CONTINUE READING

Salaries and Wages in Nigeria Public service are determined by the National Salaries, Incomes & Wages Commission (NSIWC). This agency is saddled with the responsibility of deciding a realistic compensation system in the Nigerian economy. It does annual reviews of wages and salaries in the Nigerian Civil Service. The various salary structures in Nigerian civil service according to NSIWC are as follows; Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) CONTISS is a salary structure that originated from the University Salary Structure (USS), which was introduced in the early 1980s, following the Cookey Report on the study of the problem of remuneration in the university system. This salary structure applies to the non-academic staff of universities; all academic and non-academic staff of Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, Research and Allied Institutes; and medical/dental/veterinary doctors/optometrists with OD Degrees in Federal Health Institutions such as Teaching Hospitals, Medical Centers, Specialist Hospitals etc. It also applies to all Federal Agencies formerly running the Harmonized Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (HATISS). It is a 15-grade salary structure with each scale consisting of a number of steps ranging from 15 for the lower grades to 9 for the highest grades. The new structure known as the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) is attached as Info-graph 1. The items consolidated with the basic salary are transport allowance, meal subsidy, utility allowance, leave grant, journal allowance, research allowance, learned society allowance, furniture allowance, examination administration allowance, field trip allowance, industrial supervision allowance, responsibility allowance, inducement allowance, administrative officer allowance, rural posting allowance, clinical duty allowance, teaching allowance, domestic servant allowance and driver’s allowance (for entitled officers). Hello, making a career decision most times can be quite frustrating but for your situation, i must say its really easy. Starting up your own business is perfect but apart from the fact that you dont have capital yet, i think you need to know what it feels like working with others, you need that experience because it will help you learn how to work with people and manage a team when you finally have your own business. Secondly, how do you intend raising the capital since your parents dont have? For me, i dont think depending on anyone, borrowing or begging is a good idea, i believe in working hard for what i want. About the fear of forgetting your dreams, that is never possible as long as you have passion for those dreams, no matter how much you are paid, if you want to chase those dreams, "you will" even while working. So i advise you take the job, and start working towards achieveing those dreams of yours. But dont forget that you need to learn how to save also. There are so many high paying entry level jobs you can get depending on your location and qualification. Have you ever felt you are being underpaid even when you do so much? If yes, then I am sure you are not the only one that has felt that way. According to research, we noticed that almost everyone in the corporate world at one point or the other have felt over-worked and underpaid. The feeling of underpayment can lead to frustration and dissatisfaction in extreme cases. It is normal for anyone that feels cheated upon not to be motivated to work at all. The situation where an employee feels cheated upon is not a win situation for both the employer and the employee. On the other hand, you don’t expect to be rewarded when you are not adding value to the organization. But if you realize you put in your best and end up receiving peanuts at the end of the day, then see how to avoid being underpaid in your new job in this article; Know the Market Value before Accepting a Job Offer It could be really tempting to jump at any job especially when you are desperately in need of one. Many fresh graduates look forward to getting a job upon graduation, so anything would do, and you start the job to find out that you are underpaid. Looking at Nigeria, it could be really challenging to run a business here, so many companies especially SME’s will look forward to reducing cost and maximizing profit and output. This kind of companies will likely not pay you a huge sum but will expect you to put in the work to grow the business. Big companies pay fairly well, but most of the time you are more likely to find SME’s job vacancies. Continue reading.. |
