CrimeHeadmaster Commits Suicide In Osun Over Unpaid Gratuity by ichommy(op): 6:43am On Nov 23, 2017
Many Osun State pensioners on Wednesday took to the streets to protest non payment of their pensions for 13 and-a-half months after a headmaster killed himself over unpaid gratuity.

The pensioners operating on the platform of 2011/2012 Forum of Retired Public Servants in Osun State accused the government of Rauf Aregbesola of trying to starve them to death.

According to Punch, the protesters were armed with placards with various inscriptions as they took off from Ayetoro Junction and marched to the popular Olaiya Junction where they addressed journalists.

Speaking to newsmen, leaders of the pensioners’ group said the protest was fueled by the death rate among their members, especially the death of a retired headmaster in Ejigbo Local Government Area of the state, Lukman Odewole, who recently hanged himself because he was sick and could not take care of himself as well as his wife and a child, who were all sick at the same time.

One of the leaders of pensioners’ group, Mr. Yemi Lawal revealed that Odewole before his death was the Young Tajudeen Primary School headmaster in Masifa, Ejigbo Local Government killed himself as he couldn't stomach the financial hardship he was facing.

Lawal, who blamed the nonpayment of 13-and-a-half month pensions by the Osun State Government for Odewole’s case, added that over 2,500 pensioners had died since 2013 because of nonpayment of their gratuities and pensions.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene, while urging the President not to release further intervention fund to the state government for fear of being diverted.

He said, “We are appealing to President Buhari to save us from Aregbesola. We are being owed pension arrears of 13 and a half months and gratuities.

“Some of our members are sick, but there is no money for treatment. We have lost over 2,500 members since 2013 and one of our members in Ejigbo committed suicide because of financial hardship.

“We want the Federal Government to conduct workers and pensioners’ audit to know the exact number of pensioners and workers.

“We also plead with the President not to pay further intervention fund meant for salary and pension to Osun State Government because the money will be diverted just as the previous funds were diverted.”

The Secretary of the Forum, Mr. Sola Olojede, while also speaking said that the retired headmaster committed suicide on September 29 at Masifa in Ejigbo because of financial hardship.

But the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Adelani Baderinwa, described the group of pensioners as politicians who were in the habit of blackmailing the governor.

He said, “As a government, we categorically state that government has paid workers and pensioner up to date with the modulated structure agreed upon by the government and the labour unions since 2015.

“Government does not owe any worker or pensioner based on the modulated payment scheme as the pensioners have alleged.

“We wish to put it on record that (Governor Rauf) Aregbesola increased the amount being paid as pension by 500 per cent in 2011. The nonpayment of gratuity is not peculiar to Osun; and the government has shown its readiness to pay the gratuity as soon as the state’s finances improve.

“It is on record that this group of pensioners had, at one time or the other in the past, lied against the Government of the State of Osun; and in specific reference they had alleged that government collected a tranche of the Paris Club refund and diverted it, only to have a whole month wait for the actual release of the fund.”

FamilyHospital Holds Mother, Newborn Baby For Four Months Over Unpaid Bill by ichommy(op): 8:38am On Nov 21, 2017
The birth of a baby should be a thing of joy. But for Blessing Agbo and her live-in lover, Chibugo Duru, the event has brought shame and disgrace.

For more than four months after Agbo was delivered of a baby boy through caesarean section in a Lagos hospital, God Cures Hospital, she had yet to be discharged over a bill of N215,000.

Punch correspondent gathered that the baby’s father, Duru, had already abandoned both mother and child at the medical facility in the Ilogbo, Ojo area of Lagos State.

The 27-year-old man, who spoke with Punch Metro on the telephone on Monday, said he left Agbo and their baby because he could not raise the bill charged by the hospital for the operation.

He said he had no means of raising the funds having lost his job as a truck driver, adding that efforts to seek the understanding of the hospital management were abortive.

Punch correspondent gathered that although the couple had agreed to marry each other, Duru had yet to pay Agbo’s bride price.

He said, “Sometime in June, my lover went into labour while I was on a business trip in Calabar, Cross River State. I was also called that she had developed complications and had been rushed from where she had her antenatal care to the private hospital.

“The hospital called me that they needed N245,000 for an operation and I begged them to reduce the charge, but they said it was not negotiable. I asked them to go ahead and that I would look for the money when I returned.

“They did the operation and it was successful. I paid a deposit of N30,000. Shortly afterwards, I lost my job because there was nobody to assist me in taking care of my baby. I was the one running around for both mother and child and I could not go to work.

“I begged one of their doctors to be patient with me because I had lost my job, but he refused.

“I called the hospital’s managing director and asked him to involve the police in knowing my address because I would not run away with their money. He also refused.”

The Imo State indigene alleged that his siblings, who were initially visiting the baby at the hospital, stopped coming after getting threats from the hospital management over the bill.

He alleged that sometime in September, he was detained by the hospital while on a visit to his girlfriend and baby.

“They locked me up and said I must produce their money. I was embarrassed. Because of that experience, anytime I want to go there, I become scared. At a point, they threatened me that they would sell my baby over the bill.

None of my relatives go there again, because they have threatened them. I don’t know what to do. I never knew she would need a surgery to give birth,” he added.

However, the hospital management denied the allegations, saying it never threatened to sell the baby to raise money for the bill.

The Administrative Manager of the hospital, Busayo Olorunnisola, said Agbo was admitted and delivered of the baby on compassionate grounds because no deposit was made before the surgery.

She said, “We have been looking for the father of the baby. We have been feeding the woman for the past three months. He was not in Lagos when she was brought in. He was called on the telephone that the girl needed urgent surgery and he gave his consent, promising to pay as soon as he returned.

“He didn’t return until after six days when he paid N15,000 and left. Two weeks later, he returned and promised to pay the balance. He paid an additional N15,000.

“After a fight with the girl at the hospital on September 11, he came and signed an undertaking not to abandon her again.

The girl had held him for abandoning her at the hospital and they were brought to my office where he promised never to abandon her again. Since then, he has stopped coming and the girl has been relying on the generosity of the hospital, nurses and other members of staff.”

She said the hospital had decided to forgo the N1,500 daily utility fee Agbo should have been charged for the time she spent at the hospital, adding that they were only demanding the balance of the surgery bill.

“The problem we have in this neighbourhood is that everybody thinks once you come in for treatment (at our hospital), we leave you without charges, even after undergoing surgeries, and it is something we want to stop. It’s becoming a norm. The same scenario keeps recurring and after a while, we usually let them go,” she added.

Agbo, who also spoke with Punch Metro, said Duru had yet to pay her bride price, which made her parents to abandon her.

She said, “We are not married yet because he has not paid my bride price. I was living with my sister when we started dating before he impregnated me. When I asked him to see my parents and pay the bride price, he promised to do it in December. I have been begging people for food at the hospital because he is also not bringing any food for me.”

The 21-year-old Benue State indigene appealed for help to get discharged from the hospital, saying Duru did not care for her.

EducationI Am Now Depending On Friends For Food And Shelter -nigerian Man Studying Abroad by ichommy(op): 10:23am On Nov 14, 2017
A 24-year-old man identified as Samuel Ogbonna, is among 150 Nigerians studying in the United Kingdom on scholarships, who may be forced to return home before Christmas because their funding has been stopped by their sponsors.

A British newspaper, The Sunday Telegraph, first brought the plight of these students to the knowledge of the public in a publication that recently caused a stir in the education sector in Nigeria.

According to Punch Metro, Ogbonna, in an online interview, painted a disturbing picture of the condition in which he and his fellow compatriots have found themselves in the UK.

Saddled with debts of up to £20,000 each, most of them, especially those who completed their courses last academic session, have been informed by their respective universities that they will not receive their degree certification.

Ogbonna, like many others, has been evicted from his apartment on campus for failing to pay his rent and now lives with some of his friends outside the university.

“It is difficult for me here because I don’t receive any support from home. My mum, a single parent who works as a civil servant, barely has enough to assist me financially. I have had to depend on the friends and families that I met here for food and shelter,” he told our correspondent.

Narrating how he came to find himself in such a situation, he said, “Right from my first year of study at the university, the Rivers State Government through the agency, the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency, delayed payment of my school fees and maintenance fee. It only got worse as time went on.

“At some point, my colleagues and I were owed maintenance/upkeep money for 15 months. As a result, we were in debt for several months. Most of us couldn’t afford to pay our rent as there was no money. Some students were kicked out of their residences, especially those living in private houses. Those of us who lived in the university were threatened several times with lawsuits for breaching our contracts.

“Several months after it failed to pay our upkeep money and tuition fees, the state government officially announced in 2016 that they were going to withdraw funding for our scholarships. By this time, some students had already been kicked out of their courses.

“Some institutions, such as the University of Huddersfield, even sent delegates to Nigeria to discuss with the government on how they could resolve this issue, maybe come up with a plan on how fees can be cleared, but nothing positive came out of that.”

Ogbonna also said the government did not pay his second year fees. As a result, he is unable to proceed to final year. In September, the management of the University of Leeds placed him on temporary leave. This means that he will not be allowed to attend classes until he clears his outstanding fees.

It got to a point that he was forced to open a gofundme account online to raise funds from charity and well meaning individuals.

“Although I have managed to find a paid job, as an international student I have limited permission to work. This means that I am restricted to only part time hours of employment. This continues to make it very difficult for me to gather enough money to clear my outstanding charges and financially plan for my final year.

“Apart from this, my fees cost so much that I can’t afford it. Now I have to raise two times the amount to pay my second year and final year fees, respectively,” he explained.

A few weeks ago, it looked as if fortune was about to smile on Ogbonna and his fellow students when Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State visited London. But their hopes were dashed when the governor declined to address them.

Ogbonna said, “We felt it would be a good opportunity to speak with him directly about our condition and our struggles. But this did not go as we expected because the governor refused to grant us audience. I was there in London and I saw for myself how he treated us.

“My colleagues and I waited outside the Chatham House for him to give us an explanation and also tell us how and when the funds will be released to clear our fees but he refused to talk to us.

“However, inside the house, he did answer a question regarding the scholarship. According to him, the scholarship was cancelled because the previous administration had awarded the scholarships to children of their political aides. And also, that the courses we were studying were those like Economics, English, Philosophy that can be studied back home. But that is not true.”

Asked what he thought might be the state government’s real motive for withdrawing funding for those studying abroad, he replied, “I suspect that the political rift between the previous and the present administration is the real and main reason for the cancelation of the scholarship.”

However, Ogbonna has appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to assist him financially to complete his education. “My desire is to return to school, complete my degree and become a graduate so that I can apply the skills that I have acquired to the benefit of the society,” he said.

PoliticsBiafra: Keyamo Mocks IPOB Over Nnamdi Kanu's Sack by ichommy(op): 10:12am On Nov 14, 2017
Human rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Festus Keyamo has taunted the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, over its announcement that it had sacked Nnamdi Kanu as director of Radio Biafra.

Keyamo wondered why IPOB, who had alleged that Kanu was killed by Nigerian army, was still announcing his removal ‘in the grave’.

It was reported that Radio Biafra upon resumption on Monday announced through one Ifeoma Okorafor that the radio was restructuring.

She announced that, “Mazi Nnamdi Nwanekaenyi Kanu, the former Director of Radio Biafra is hereby dismissed and removed as Director of Radio Biafra following extensive and intensive consultations”

“Kanu’s actions and his decisions to incite members of IPOB towards violence leading to the death of many innocent young people in Onitsha, Aba and Umuahia is totally unacceptable and grossly irresponsible.

“Kanu privately collected £14 million and another $22 million to purchase landed properties abroad in his name and that of his father, Igwe Israel Kanu, in a clear case of ‘monkey dey work baboon dey chop’.”

Reacting, however, Keyamo rhetorically asked if Biafra was now a zoo.

He tweeted, “So, after IPOB earlier claimed the Army killed Kanu, did they wake him from d grave to ask him questions over allegations against him before sacking him as their leader? Or did they sack him without hearing from him? Would that not be the style of animals in a zoo? Is Biafra now a zoo?”
