RESPONSE TO “TIMELINE OF RECENT SHI’ITE CLASH WITH SECURITY AGENCIES”

… SHI’ITE CLASHES WITH GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA: A LONGSTANDING CONFLICT

By Abubakar Abdulsalam

Dear Editor,

In light of the recent article titled “Timeline of Recent Shi’ite Clash with Security Agencies,” it is imperative to delve deeper into the complexities that characterize the ongoing confrontations between the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) and the Nigerian government. While the article provides a timeline of events, it fails to capture the longstanding and multifaceted nature of this conflict, which has roots dating back to the early 1990s.

The IMN, led by Ibrahim Yaqub Zakzaky, has been a prominent player in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape since its inception in the 1980s. However, the group’s confrontational stance with state authorities has escalated notably since the 1990s. Reports indicate that the IMN was involved in violent incidents in Katsina during this period, which set a precedent for future clashes. Zakzaky’s leadership has often been marked by a defiance of governmental authority, culminating in a series of confrontations that challenge public order and national stability.

The clashes have not only persisted but have intensified over the years, with significant incidents occurring in 2013 when over 30 Shi’ites were killed during a procession. This tragic event marked a turning point in the relationship between the IMN and security forces, highlighting the group’s willingness to confront armed personnel during their gatherings without the necessary approvals. Such actions have invariably led to violent confrontations, raising serious concerns about the IMN’s commitment to non-violence, as claimed by its leadership.

Annual observances organized by the IMN, including the grand trekking to their shrine in Zaria and the Day of Al-Quds, have become flashpoints for clashes with security agencies. These events attract large crowds, often comprising women, children, and the elderly, leading to significant disruptions in public order. The barricading of roads and highways during these gatherings has become a recurring theme, prompting inevitable confrontations with law enforcement.

While it is essential to uphold the rights of all groups to express their beliefs and grievances, the IMN’s pattern of behavior has placed them in direct conflict with the law on numerous occasions. The history of confrontations with various regimes, including the current government, underscores a troubling trajectory that cannot be ignored. The implications of these clashes extend beyond mere skirmishes; they pose a potential threat to Nigeria’s social fabric and political stability.

Moreover, the IMN’s alleged connections with militant training camps and groups such as Hezbollah and Iran have raised alarm bells among security experts. The fear of an impending implosion in Nigeria’s polity is palpable, as the IMN continues to challenge the status quo and push for the adoption of more stringent Islamic legal principles. Zakzaky’s outspoken criticism of northern Nigeria’s political elite further exacerbates the tensions, creating an environment ripe for conflict.

This group have a penchant for disobeying lawful authority; for in their own tradition there is no authority in Nigeria to which they owe any allegiance as such they organise rallies and public processions without notifying the Police or the Federal Road Safety Corps in order to put proper security measures in place.

Their insistence on blocking public roads, highways without any permit to do so and the kind of threat/molestation mated out to innocent members of the public who cannot questions such acts.

El-Zakzaky’s hidden agenda and the dream of setting up an “Islamic Republic of Nigeria” coupled with the blind support; material and otherwise from the Islamic Republic of Iran. This showed clearly when Iran reacted angrily against the arrest of El-Zakzaky by security agents following the clash between the Military and Shiite on 12th-14th December 2015.

Available statistics showed that the Islamic Movement in Nigeria is heavily funded from Iran. It is alleged that they have links with the Hezbollah of Lebanon and a working understanding with the London based Islamic Parliament. The events marking the 56th birthday anniversary of El-Zakzaky way back in August 2008 at the Babban Dodo Stadium in Zaria City confirmed this further. The expenditure incurred during the three days event runs into millions of naira which suggested strong liquidity base for the organisers of the event.

The occasion was also meant to show case the Military preparedness of the Shiite Movement in Nigeria. This was clearly demonstrated by the parade and match-past by various detachments of the movement from across the country with El- Zakzaky taking the salute as the de-facto President of an impending Islamic Republic. What does that mean? Simply put, El-Zakzaky is slowly but surely working towards actualising his dream of an Islamic Republic of Nigeria.

In conclusion, the narrative surrounding the Shi’ite clashes with the Nigerian government is one of a protracted struggle, marked by a series of confrontations that have evolved over decades. As we reflect on these events, it is crucial to approach the issue with a nuanced understanding of the historical context and the implications for Nigeria’s future. The government must engage in a dialogue that addresses the underlying grievances of the Shi’ite community, while also ensuring that public order and national security are upheld.

Sincerely,
Abubakar Abdulsalam

Alleged Defamation: Court summons doctor after mental examination of suspect

A court in Kano has ordered a doctor that conducted a mental disorder test on a suspect to appear before the court for an explanation. The Judge gave the order in the case of Yusuf Burutai vs Ibrahim Danshagamu.

The presiding Judge of court number 25, Halima Wali, ordered the doctor that examined the alleged mental disorder of a man named Ibrahim Danshagamu to appear before her.

Yusuf Burutai filed a case of defamation against Ibrahim for publishing a falsified video alleging that Burutai owns several petrol stations in Kano. At first, the court remanded the charged person at a correctional centre. The accused was arraigned later in the court for bail.

Barrister Husaini Maqari, the Defense Lawyer in his interview with Freedom Radio after the court session, said; “Well, the case was filed after the video was published alleging that General Burutai has more than 60 petrol stations in Kano state. The published video also blamed (Burutai) for extorting money allocated to buy weapons to fight terrorism in Maiduguri”.

The Defense lawyer also added that; “Doctors from Malam Aminu Kano's hospital have brought a document showing that the charged person has a mental disorder. They narrated that he once divorced his five wives and since when he was a child he had signs of a mental disorder. However, the terms used in the report presented before the court are complicated that was why the Judge ordered the doctor who wrote the report to come to the court for clarification”.

The court also granted bail to the accused on the condition of one surety with the sum of 50 thousand nairas.

Politics / Security: TY Buratai Foundation Call For Full Restoration Of Role Of Traditional by IDanfulani(m): 7:51am On Jan 01, 2023
NEW YEAR MESSAGE - TY BURATAI HUMANITY CARE FOUNDATION CALLS FOR FULL RESTORATION OF ROLE OF TRADITIONAL RULERS IN THE NIGERIAN CONSTITUTION IN THE INTEREST OF NATIONAL SECURITY AND NATIONAL VALUES

In it's new year 2023 message, the TY Buratai Humanity Care Foundation has called on the National Assembly to re-establish the roles of traditional rulers in matters involving religion, culture, security, justice and other ancillary matters in the Nigerian Constitution.

A statement Signed by the National Coordinator of the foundation, Ibrahim Dahiru Danfulani Sadaukin Garkuwan Keffi, noted that the current constitution has relegated the traditional institution to the background with no constitutional roles.

It should be recalled that the Ironsi’s 1966 Unitary Government Decree, Gen Gowon’s 1967 Local Government Reform Decree and that of Gen Obasanjo’s 1976 Local Government Reform Decree stripped traditional rulers of their powers and gave same to the local government councils.

Prior to the 1976 local government reforms, which stripped traditional rulers of their powers, Nigeria was at that time progressive, peaceful, decent and full of beautiful traditions and cultures. But today with the influence of the social media and unrestricted contents detrimental to our culture and tradition we have continued to subconsciously aided the continued subversion of our values. To make any sovereign state weak and it's eventual collapse is to subvert its cultural values first. Nigerias must be conscious of this fact

The Grand Patron of the Foundation H.E. Lt Gen TY Buratai Rtd had observed that "modern Nigeria's origin was based on the political, social and economic roots of Nigeria's empires, kingdoms and chiefdoms firmly established before the colonial rule. These empires, kingdoms and chiefdoms were well administered by the Emirs, Obas and Obis. These traditional rulers wielded powers and authority that helped to douse conflicts and ensure criminals had no hiding places. Progress and developments took place in their domains."

As it is today, traditional rulers do not have the constitutional or other legal backings to perform effectively as they are not even mentioned in the 1999 constitution. This is a great departure from all earlier constitutions that recognised them, and even gave them some functions to perform. Such functions include maintaining peace and security which made the work of the police, the military and the government officials much easier.

The TY Buratai Foundation agrees and supports the position of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria that: "Traditional rulers should be accorded specific responsibilities for conflict and security management in their domains. This involvement, devoid of partisanship, would enable active participation of traditional institutions in matters pertaining to the maintenance of peace and security in their communities.”

The TY Buratai Humanity Care Foundation also concurs with the traditional rulers that ”The constitutional provision should provide for states to enact state laws to cater for specific peculiar matters relating to traditional rulers in the respective states. In addition, the Chairmen of the States Councils of Chiefs should be recognised by the constitution as Members of the Council of State as it has been in all the Nigerian Constitutions, except the 1999 one.”

We equally at this point commend the Senate Constitution Review Committee, under the able Chairmanship of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege for the good job so far done. In the same vein, the Foundation calls on all lawmakers at the national and state Assemblies to support the position of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria. They should ratify all the recommendations pertaining to the roles of the traditional rulers by the Senate Constitution Review Committee. The support by the various state governors to their State Assemblies in this regard is also fundamental. The State Governor should allow the process to go through unhindered.

The Year 2023 is elections year. We urge all politicians and Nigerians generally to abide by the rules of the game. Nigerians should be their own watchdogs on the election days. Any attempt to rig or scuttle the elections process should fished out and handed over to the security agencies.

As the New Year 2023 rolls in, we wish all Nigerians a happy and prosperous new year.

Wali, has sent one Ibrahim Khalil Danshagamu a self acclaimed internet blogger on remand in the correctional center over defaming and tarnishing the good image of a former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd).

The counsel to the plaintiff, Barrister Hussaini Makari while speaking to newsmen shortly after the court sitting, said that his client has also thrown a challenge that if the defendant or any Kano State based citizen can point out any filling station belonging to him, he is ready to withdraw the case against the defendant.

Similarly, the counsel to the defendant, S.A. Abdullahi declined comments when journalists approached him.

Politics / Sponsored To Cast Aspersion On Individuals by IDanfulani(m): 8:09am On Sep 17, 2022
My attention has been drawn to a group of those who called themselves Journalists who are in the habit of allowing themselves to be sponsored to cast aspersion on individuals who have served this country meritoriously and still serving their fatherland.

Latest of their aspersion was on Vision FM/Farin wata Tv in a program named Idon Mikiya with Presenter Umar Farouq Musa.

The said program had as guest, Mahmud Sale a self aclaimed Security Analyst , Shuaibu Mungadi Farin wata TV staff, Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, during which they like always centred their discussion on personalities particularly former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) with unsubstantiated accusations.

There is no doubt, the presenter and his guests may have been paid to attempt to damage the good reputation of the Distinguished Service Chiefs who are still in the service of contributing to the growth and development of their fatherland.

Let me remind the presenter, discussants and their sponsors that no amount of aspersion and image Assassination will deter the former service chiefs and Well meaning Nigerian Elites from carrying out their duties and service to Nigeria.

I wish to further urge Vision FM to carry out due diligence in order to get the specific service chief the ICPC was referring to. It is the responsibility of professional journalists to carry out detailed investigation to know which specific service chief was involved so as to guide their discussions and the general public.

Let me further advise Vision FM to try other legitimate means of earning income rather than allowing themselves to be sponsored and used in tarnishing peoples image.

A stitch in time saves nine.

EXCLUSIVE: President Buhari Will Surmount Insecurity In Nigeria, Says Amb. Buratai

By Augustine Ehikioya

The Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Ambassador, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd), on Tuesday expressed confidence that President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration will surmount the new security challenges facing the country and called on Nigerians to exercise patience.

Besides subsiding terrorists attacks in the North East, banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism have led other criminal activities in other parts of the country.

Speaking in Abuja when Security Watch Africa (SWA) Team led by its President/C.E.O., Mr. Patrick Agbambu, paid him a courtesy visit, Amb. Buratai, pointed out that President Buhari brought the rampant activities of terrorists in the North East before his tenure under control when he assumed office in 2015.

He said “But a new challenge has emerged in other parts of the country which is a fall out of what happened in the North East.

“But I believe government is concerned and is not sitting idle, its not resting.

“Things are being done and I believe the current state of fear, the sense of despair in some quarters will soon be resolved,” he stated.

Recalling the situation in the country before President Buhari assumed office in 2015, he said “The security situation continued to deteriorate. But we give glory to God for the change in 2015.

“We contributed our little quota to stop the drift into anarchy. People tend to forget where we were.

“When we were in the office, we responded immediately there was any attack and we were always ahead of them.

“I believe we have done our country proud as members of the Armed Forces and we are still doing our best,” he added.

With so much conviction, the former COAS concludes, “The situation now will soon be tackled just like we did with the Boko Haram issue. President Buhari has the will and requisite capacity to surmount these challenges.”

Politics / PDP Feasting On Fake News, Afraid Of 2023 Election by IDanfulani(m): 2:17pm On Jul 04, 2022
_The National Democratic Front (NDF)_
*PDP Feasting on Fake News, Afraid of 2023 Election*

The National Democratic Front (NDF) is surprised at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s brazenness that made it weaponize fake news, launch it at the Nigerian public and went on to believe that there are no right-thinking people in the populace to find out its lies and manipulative ways.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary General Dr. Bolaji Abdulkadir and made available to the press in Abuja on the 4th July 2022

NDF is particularly amused at PDP’s latest tirade directed at Nigeria’s Ambassador to Benin Republic and former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and, Ambassador Tukur Buratai on the false allegation that the N1.85 billion recovered by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in a property in Abuja belonged to the accomplished retired Army boss.
It is common knowledge that Ambassador Buratai, through his lawyers and aides has unequivocally distanced himself from the recovered money and cars while the ICPC had also made it clear that the Ambassador was not a person of interest in its investigation that has already apprehended the Managing Director of K Salam Construction Company Nigeria Limited, Mr. Kabiru Salau, whose company is a military contractor.
The anti-graft agency had further clarified the cash and assets it recovered from the said property amounted to N267.43 million and not N1.85 billion, which leaves one wondering if the PDP is in touch with reality or rather absorbed in believing the fake news it is attempting to feed Nigerians.
The statement by PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, PDP, Debo Ologunagba that attempted to rehash the fake news that linked Ambassador Buratai to the phantom N1.85 recovered funds is so incoherent and disjointed that it was apparent the so-called opposition party has lost essence and sense of direction and only now feeds on fake news to justify its existence.
While it attempted to paint the outstanding former COAS as a corrupt person, PDP’s tenuous attempt to string together unrelated variables and create a nexus to the 2023 General Elections showed that the party fears the trouncing awaiting it at the polls hence the unreasonable fear that has left it grasping at straws in a bid to assemble the excuses it would give for being rejected by Nigerians yet again. Rather than maligning the personality of persons that have sacrificed for the country, the PDP should direct its efforts at discussing issues since this is the only way political parties can pitch themselves to Nigerians.
NDF finds it necessary to advise the PDP to stop projecting its warped values on other political parties and public office holders since the fake crime it is accusing Ambassador Buratai of fits into the pattern of the looting that the party used to destroy Nigeria and precipitate the security crisis that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has grappled with. Insecurity resulting from bad governance does not occur overnight but takes time to manifest and the fact that the security fallout resulting from PDP’s years of misrule manifested under the present government does not in any way absolve the party of responsibility for what it did to Nigeria.
We further urged the PDP to seek forgiveness from Nigerians and atone for its sins against the country in the hope that its members would one day be found worthy of being rehabilitated and reintegrated into mainstream politics and governance, which Nigerians presently think the party is unfit for. However, dishing out fake news about Ambassador Buratai and the incumbent government would only deepen the odiousness in which citizens hold the party owing to the magnitude of perversions its members committed in the office while the party held sway.
