NYSC / NYSC May Have Two Streams Per Batch In 2015 by IdeaHOuse(m): 9:14am On Feb 01, 2015
The National Youth Service Corps has announced that the scheme has planned to mobilize about 220, 000 corps members in the two batches of 2015.

Earlier in the year, the NYSC announced that there will only be two batches this year as against the traditional three batches. Batch A will hold in May 2015 and Batch B in September 2015. The Scheme revealed that the rationale behind the decision was to ensure the protection of corps members.

By calculation, this will mean the there will be an average of 110, 000 corps members per batch. This means there’ll be an average of 2,972 corps members per state, a number that clearly exceeds the carrying capacity of most NYSC camps.

In another development, the NYSC through her Director of Planning Research and Statistics (DPRS) have disclosed that the Scheme will likely operate two streams per batch during the 2015 Mobilization exercise.

This decision is based on the fact that the number of corps members to be mobilized in 2015 are expected to exceed the handling capacity of most orientation camps.

The disclosure came during a tweetmeet with the Director on 27th January 2015. While answering other questions, the DPRS also stated that as many corps members as possible will be accommodated in 2015 to make up for the non-existence of Batch C and the postponement of Batch A 2015 to May.

With the dual batch method in place, each orientation camp is expected to carry about 1486 corps members per stream in 2015.

Literature / Adventures Of Kopa D – Episode 5: The Battle For Aso by IdeaHOuse(m): 12:16pm On Jan 19, 2015
The 2015 General elections is just about few days away, with two major contenders, incumbent Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and former Head Of State General Muhammad Buhari (rtd) being the foremost contender for the heart of Aso Rock.

Campaigns on the internet appears to be in favour of the General with lots of persons digging up secrets of the other. There are shocking revelations about Buhari as well as Goodluck Jonathan: the dedication to the total Islamization of Nigeria as well as a timid transformation agenda. However, what does a Buhari and GEJ campaign look like in Northern Nigeria? Strange! It’s in the wake of this that I met Abdul and Farouk, loyalists of APC and PDP respectively.

Abdul has been an avid member of the PDP during its early years but decamped in 2010 to join CPC which later merged with others to become APC. During his time as a member of the PDP, He has served once as a personal assistant to a PDP political office holder, another term as special adviser and another term as senior special adviser (you know the way these politicians have several levels of advisers: personal assistant is like the house boy, special adviser is like the handbag, senior special advisers are the one who really do the advising). For short, let’s say he has profited enough from the schemes and structure of the PDP before moving on.

Well Farouk’s got a sad tale. He graduated from a UK university in 2011 and immediately became a senior special adviser to a serving senator on something something matter (you know what I mean) upon completing his NYSC which he did at the National Assembly. He has only been in the system for just three years, not yet married, doesn’t have a house in Asokoro, his car ain’t sleek yet and the skies were practically falling on him. He has to go on the field to ensure that his Benefactor’s party remain in power and his meal ticket his assured. Farouk and Abdul met in a public relaxation center as I eavesdropped on content of their argument.

That Jonathan is a heartless man, he is just a foolish southern christian who got to power by accident and has messed everywhere up, Abdul said with eyebrows squeezed and hands raised to express his anger. Farouk interjected rudely, But his transformation agenda has catapulted Nigeria to the largest economy in Africa, agriculture has been experiencing great progress under his watch, Northerners have benefited from this administration, women and our youth have been adequately carried along.

Which youth are carried along, vented Abdul, is it the countless amount of youth that have been killed in villages in the North East or teaming mass of those unemployed graduates that are churned out on a yearly basis? Which of these are the ones carried along? Calmly in a tone to convince Farouk answered, may Allah have mercy on you, Our president has created 6 new universities, he has instituted the YouWIN programme that has provided practicality to entrepreneurship and is the first president to appoint a Senior Special Adviser on Youth and Students matter. Abdul, the fact is that there are more youth in Nigeria than the entire population on Kenya, it only takes a magician to solve every problem in Nigeria in a few years.

Abdul poured some more drink in his glass he sipped on while listening as Farouk downloaded his manifesto. He cleared his throat to speak, your Jonathan has not been able to counter the insurgency that is killing our tribesmen on a daily basis; the military are not incompetent to handle this, they are just not motivated to do anything. Moreover, the level of corruption he has permitted in the military is unheard off! Are you aware that the bags of rice his campaign team earmarked for the wives of fighting soldiers were defalcated by senior officers in the barracks. Farouk had a look of amazement on his face, he reached for his phone in his pocket as Abdul continued. That is why we should all dis this arna (southern christian) and embrace our own, the General who is able to salvage the situation.

Farouk excused himself to make a call to one of the wives of the fighting soldier. He confirms, Abdul’s accusation concerning the bags of rice. You see Mallam Abdul, when we bring tribalism into the picture, I just smile at our naivety (Abdul was getting riled as he spoke). Buhari is already 73 years old, who doesn’t know that he will die halfway into his tenure and power will return to the south without us having a stake. Abdul’s eyes bulged at this concealment that had just being released as Farouk continued, age is already telling on Buhari and in the event he dies like Yar’adua, we in the North will lose totally, Farouk affirmed. That is why it is more in our interest to vote Jonathan and allow the General to approach his deathbed in peace.

Abdul had to swallow the bile concerning the age of his candidate. He tried to digress from the matter, how come I have not seen a single campaign poster of your candidate in town despite your resolute support for him, are you scared that you may be stoned to death? He said jeering. Farouk muttered briefly but his tongue was caged by the circumstance. Abdul reached for his phone and showed Farouk a picture on it, Farouk had a startled expression on his face. The picture contained four PDP candidates on a poster and Buhari at the center of it with the APC logo with him. Tell your president to get his luggage ready because May 2015 we will be releasing a new kind of bag called Jonathan Must Go because power must return to its home, Northern Nigeria. He laughed as he took his leave signalling Farouk to finish his half-empty bottle of drink.

You know how concerned I am about the possibility of violence erupting as a result of this election or its aftermath? I stumbled on a the news of the Peace Pack against violence signed by the presidential candidates. It’s the best piece of news for NYSC Corps members if they truly adhere to the agreement.

No matter the extent of violence that we as youth subscribe too, Buhari or Jonathan’s personal vehicles will not have her windscreen smashed; their children will not be harmed in any violence; it is our collective amenities built from the remains of embezzled tax payers money and oil revenue that will be destroyed. Again I say shine your eyes.

KPMG, Baker Hughes, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria and a number of other companies are currently recruiting, don’t wait till you get your discharge certificate before you apply, you’ll be unemployed already by then. See more internships and Job opportunities for corps members here.

See you on Friday. It’s still adventures of Kopa D on KopasTales.com. I’ll like your comments as usual, please. winks

NYSC / NYSC Denies Increment In Corps Members Allowances by IdeaHOuse(m): 2:50pm On Jan 07, 2015
The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps have debunked claims that there has been any increment in overall allowances of NYSC corps members.

The denial came through the official twitter account of the scheme on 6th January, 2015 while commemorating 365 days in office of Brig. Gen. J. B. Olawunmi and answering questions from corps members.

It will be recalled that the information concerning the N500 daily feeding increment was publicized by various media organizations after the Director General attended a public hearing session, as a result of petitions submitted against it from the Say No Campaign (SNC) for its controversial N4,000 online registration fee.

However, the NYSC leader declared that the N500 was meant to cater for three square meals of corps members during the 21 days orientation camp period.

NYSC / Under The NYSC N4,000 Hood: Beyond Advocacy And Tweeting by IdeaHOuse(m): 12:50pm On Sep 12, 2014
By Demilade Isaac Osoteku

NYSC has since its founding years as a post-civil-war panacea met with lots of opposition. The opposition has been fiercer in recent times with lots of argument for or against its essence. While some quarters believe it’s a waste of one productive year to unproductive work usually in the classrooms of primary and secondary schools, other have believed that it is a shock absorber for Nigerian graduates before they are met with the realities of the Nigerian environment particularly unemployment.

Last month, the NYSC announced the digitalization of her online process with voluntary registration for printing of call-up letters online. Under this new arrangement, prospective corps members will have to register online with a fee of N4, 000, while having the flexibility of printing their call up letters from any location in the country. This online process will become compulsory as from February 2014.

Take for example, Deji who stays in Lagos and schooled at the University of Jos and was posted to Akwa-Ibom for his youth service. Under the previous arrangement, Deji would have to travel from Lagos to Jos at a cost of N7,000 and 14 hours of road travelling or N23, 000 and 1hour 15 minutes by air travel to get his call up letter. He will then proceed to Akwa Ibom state at a cost of N8, 000 to resume for the orientation camp.

Under this new regime of online call up letters. Deji would save N3, 000 cost of travelling to Jos since he’ll print his call up letter from the nearest cyber café as well as save himself from the long hours and the natural hazard that comes with travelling on Nigerian roads. Is the N4, 000 still evil?

But Deji’s account is not a balanced one. Consider Iniobong who was born and grew up in Calabar while also attending the University of Calabar. It would cost here N200 to get to her campus and pick up her call up letter. That is a whopping N3,800 loss to an unemployed Nigerian graduate. To Iniobong, this is evil of course.

The digitalization of the registration and mobilization stages of the NYSC for me is an anticipated improvement. The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) took this giant leap in 2012 and registered about About 1,503,931 candidates. According to the JAMB Boss Dibu Ojerinde “JAMB has achieved a drastic reduction in the incidence of incomplete results to 28,069 because of the digitalization process.” The cost of UTME registration is N4,000 too.

How about the case of checking the result for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) by the West African Examination Council (WAEC)? In the days before the WAEC Scratch cards, both public and private schools were the king, they charged as much as N5, 000 for the collection of statement of result from the schools and will have to return years later to collect their certificates, of course at another fee. Digitalization although costs N500 per scratch cards, this exploitation by schools is reduced. Also, WAEC can afford to collect N500 because of the economies of scale, approximately 1.69 million students wrote WASSCE in 2014 alone. In monetary terms, it means that WAEC makes about N846 million in result checking every year.

Even at that, a lot of Nigerian graduates participate in the NYSC scheme. Moreso, it is a service to the nation and an academic voyage. The government need corps members more than the corps members need the government. According to the Director General of the Scheme Brig-General J. B. Olawunmi, 200, 000 corps members participated in the August environmental sanitation exercise. This number represents probably 60-70% of the total number of corps members which may amount to about 285,000 corps members. The economics of the online registration is about N1.14billion. Whooping!

Just before you read on, for your information, I’m not an NYSC official! Smiles.

Before we make comparisons, let’s beam our focus on JAMB. 1.6million candidates registered for UTME in 2014. Since they all paid N4,000 in registration fees, that’s an awesome N6.4Billion in revenue for JAMB. If the revenue from NYSC registration was hooping, this is Alarming!

In comparison, NYSC and their private partner would make N1.14 billion in revenue. This translates to mean that the online registration process makes 34% more in revenue than WAEC although WAEC caters for over 400% of the NYSC registrants. UTME on the other hand makes 457% more than NYSC although they handle 131% more registrants.

Away from the public institutions handling these things. Sidmatech Technologies limited, the private partner of the NYSC e-registration project won the 2012 ICT Company of the Year by Titans of Tech and the 2012 Beacon ICT Indigenous Software Solution Company of the Year by Communications Week. It was started by four (4) co-founders with Mr. Michael A. Olajide the Board of Directors Chairman being a former staff/Consultant for JAMB. Maybe that was why the deal went through, who knows?

Sidmatech also has been a good company. Since its founding year, 1993, it has delivered ICT infrastructures and solution to leading international, government and private organizations like NNPC, ENI, Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Agip Oil, Nigerian Information Technology Development Agency (NIDTA) among others. Sidmatech Specializes in e-registration, Educational management Information Service, Biometric, Human Capital Management System as well as other solutions. Would a company of such repute be toying with their integrity over lots of money? Maybe.

With the aforementioned, did NYSC make an error to introduce the digitalization of the Scheme? Is the N4,000 fee too exorbitant compared to fees by similar organizations? Should the NYSC stick to the traditional method or join the rest of their contemporaries in benefiting from the goodness of technology? All these questions we will all answer.

DId NYSC Actually Suspend Batch B Stream II?

‘’For the purpose of putting the record straight, management of the NYSC took a decision in July 2014 to shift the venues of orientation course for seven states; namely, Bauchi Gombe, Jigawa, Borno, Yobe Adamawa and Kano, to other states due to security challenges and the fears of parents whose wards are to be mobilised. Therefore the orientation course in these seven states and that of Osun as well as additional corps members for Lagos State was planned to hold from 1st to 22nd September, 2014 under Stream II of the 2014 Batch ‘B’ and we are sticking to that

Brutality at Benue Camp: 21 Faint due to 2 Hours Punishment

News reaching us from our reporters in Benue camp have revealed a brutality unleashed on corps members by soldiers at the orientation camp.

The reports have it that while a lecture was going on today, some soldiers beat a corps member for complaining about limited number of chairs available for the lecture. Punishments of youth corps members are believed to be permissible during the orientation camps but not beating.

The other youth corps members grumbled at the merciless beating of the corps members since he said the truth. They were all told to apologize afterwards.

The honest refusal of these corps member to apologize led to the unleashing of terror and several massive punishments during the hours of 4pm - 6pm today.

Unconfirmed reports from youth corps members at the camp have it that close to 21 corps members fainted and were rushed to the medical centre during the brutal punishment session.

The commandant of the camp has also threatened to that morning parades that were supposed to commence by 5am will now commence by 2am.

It is our honest plea that the authorities of the Benue camp, Benue State Government and the NYSC Headquarters see to this report.

Kindly share, this brutality must stop.

abdulwastecx:

NYSC is not any true reflection of what Nigeria is..... its more like a platform of wasting scarce gov't resources that could have been channel into other more crucial thinks like rural education, women empowerment, rural electricity etc.... the most disturbing part of this scheme is the risk involved, emerging the risk involve in traveling for 15hours on Nigeria road into an unknown city or state without any help and also the prevailing corruption involve in the scheme, imagine hostel without electricity, proper layout, ventilation, drinking water etc....the risk of contacting life threatening disease inform of malaria, typhoid, cholera etc

I will rather go back to my immediate community building public utilities like schools, drainage, water works or teach for free using direct labour than traveling 15hours to a place where I can easily be robbed or killed for no reason.

NYSC is a waste of time and an avenue to loot gov't money

As you dey vex now who go hold you. Its okay for humans to pose inital resistance to change especially when they are taken outside their comfort zones. All you have to do is enjoy the best of the three weeks in camp. Be open to networking, make new friends, know about their childhood, roll with the girls, argue with the guys. Pray with NCCF, pray your hourly prayer. Most people will just complain about NYSC, be an exception. Enjoy it wink

Introducing KopasTales.com
I have been posted to Bauchi state although I had studied in the University of Benin in the South Southern part of Nigeria. I had grown up in the South Western part of Nigeria and going to the North will be an exceptional experience.

KopasTales is a blog dedicated to telling our stories and tales during our NYSC period. It was inspired by this group and we can together make this work.

Whether it's from the North-East-South or Western part of Nigeria, we have a story to tell, we have a tale to share. Starting from call up letter miracles, our camp experiences, redeployment, romance, politics, CDS and news from our various states of service. Let's do this together.
