From all the posts, what i have found are the following:

1. Kanti bello actually wanted to have Dora rubbished but he didnt do his homework well.
2. Nigerians we know ourselves very well when things were going wrong with the FEC concerning Memo Dora should have toiled a part of truth by resigning. by doing that she would gained more support from nigerians even from nairaland. and that would not have stopped her nomination under Jonathan.
3. Seriously speaking we (Nigerians) needs re-birth in every facets of our lives.
Nairaland GeneralNigeria Forces On Alert After Text Message Threats by ideas78(op): 4:59pm On Mar 29, 2010
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Nigerian police and immigration services are on high alert after officials said Monday they received text messages threatening new religious violence by a radical Islamic sect.

Officers set up checkpoints in armored tanks around Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state where rioting by the Islamic sect Boko Haram and an ensuing police crackdown left 700 people dead. Immigration agents in the state that borders Chad, Niger and Cameroon also are watching for Boko Haram members who may cross the border to spark new violence in the area, said Adamu Isa Azare, an assistant superintendent of police in Borno.

Azare said the increased security presence comes after police received text messages that promised the group would rise again and attack around Maiduguri. Violence between Christians and Muslims in central Nigeria has left more than 500 people dead since the start of the year, sparking recent calls from an al-Qaida-affiliated Web site for a Muslim uprising against Christians.

"We are not (sure) if it is Boko Haram per se, because some people we are yet to identify were just sending text messages to people that there was going to be attacks," Azare said. "For this reason, we stepped up our security apparatus as proactive measures to ensure we were not caught unaware. We want to ensure the people are well-policed. We don't want to take anything for granted."

Azare also asked the public to call authorities if they saw large groups of unfamiliar people moving into the region.

Boko Haram — which means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language — has campaigned for the implementation of strict Shariah law. Its members rioted and attacked police stations and private homes in late July, sparking the police crackdown. Authorities have been accused of killing Boko Haram leader Mohammed Yusuf while he was in custody. Police officials said he was killed while trying to escape, but army officials said he was alive when he was arrested.

The group largely went underground after Yusuf's death. In early March, police arrested 17 officers suspected of taking part in filmed executions that later aired on international news channel Al-Jazeera.

China Unicom Group Is Preferred for Nigeria’s Nitel (Update2)

Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Nigeria’s government named a group including China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. as the preferred bidder for Nigeria Telecommunications Ltd. after it offered $2.5 billion for the state-owned company.

The group, known as New Generation Telecom Ltd., also includes Dubai-based Minerva Group and GiCell Wireless Ltd., a Nigerian operator, National Council on Privatization official Taiwo Osipitan told reporters today in the capital, Abuja. China Unicom is that nation’s second-biggest wireless operator.

“This is wonderful,” Titi Ommo-Ettu, chief executive officer of Telecom Answers Associates, a Lagos-based research company, said in a phone interview. “To have a first national- carrier license is a big deal. It’s a good price for Nigeria.”

Nigeria is Africa’s most-populous nation, with more than 140 million people, and the continent’s fastest-growing telecommunications market. The number of fixed-line and mobile- phone customers increased to 67.9 million in June from 65.5 million in January, according to the Abuja-based Nigerian Communications Commission.

Nitel has lost market share to rival private operators licensed since 2000, including MTN Nigeria Ltd., and its employees are currently owed 17 months of wages, according to the Bureau of Public Enterprises. A previous attempt to sell the company was annulled after Transnational Corp., a Lagos-based investment company, failed to comply with sale conditions.

Rival Bids

New Generation beat five other bids for the company, which is known as Nitel. On Feb. 8, the government announced that South Africa’s MTN Group Ltd., Globacom, Nigeria’s second- largest mobile operator, Brymedia (WA) Ltd., Spectrum Group and Omen International Ltd. were short-listed as preferred bidders.

“We have strong financial partners ready to fund” the business, Usman Gumi, an official from the New Generation group, said in an interview. He didn’t provide further details.

Bids unsealed today were for 75 percent of Nitel and its mobile unit, known as M-Tel, according to a BPE statement. The next-highest bid was $956 million from a group of investors known as Omen International, it said.

New Generation must pay 30 percent of the purchase price 10 days after the winner is approved by the National Council on Privatization, headed by acting President Goodluck Jonathan, according to the BPE. The remainder must be paid 60 days after Jonathan’s approval.

The government plans to warehouse Nitel’s debt and settle it later using the proceeds from the sale of the company, Christopher Anyanwu, the director-general of the BPE, told reporters in Abuja today

Nigeria Slams 'Discriminatory' Flight Checks

Nigeria has criticised new security measures for passengers flying to and from the United States as unfair and said they amounted to discrimination against 150 million people.
The US government has announced that travellers from 14 countries, including Nigeria, are to be subjected to extra checks including body pat-downs, after a young Nigerian was accused of trying to blow up a US jet on Christmas Day.
But Nigeria Information Minister Dora Akunyili said that Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, did not have a history of terrorism and such a move could not be justified.
"It is unfair to include Nigeria on the US list for tighter screening because Nigerians do not have terrorist tendencies," Ms Akunyili said.
"It is unfair to discriminate against over 150 million people because of the behaviour of one person."
A 23-year-old Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, has been accused of trying to trigger an explosion on the Northwest Airlines plane with chemicals which had been stitched into his underwear.
"Abdulmutallab's behaviour is not reflective of Nigerians and should therefore not be used as a yardstick to judge all Nigerians," Ms Akunyili said.
"He was not influenced in Nigeria. He was not recruited or trained in Nigeria. He was not supported whatsoever in Nigeria."
Prosecutors say that Abdulmutallab tried to carry out the attack after undergoing training by Yemen-based militants who have said they were behind the plot.

This is what I saw at the site, but any ranting from her does not change our status for now, until the right things are done. We really need change in these country. A country that lives inside oil, and yet cars have to spend days at the filling stations, before they can buy another country's fuel (since our refineries are now museums), has a serious problem at hand.

The most painful aspect of it is that, the so-called Petroleum minister does not see anything wrong in that, yet prefers private holiday, when his house is on fire. Come to think of it, can't we just retire all these fools parading the corridors of power? I am tired of these people. Take for example, Rilwane Lukman has been in government ever since I was in primary four, and now I am a graduate and have worked for like 3 years now, and he is still a Minister, in a country that has more than 150million people. Something is really wrong with the system. The time to change all these is now.

Abeg, let them continue to embarrass us. That way, our plight will be known to the international community, since focus will now shift to us.
dont you know that naija Bleep ups too much and they (US/UK) are looking for the slightest mess up from and farouk has gladly given them the leeway whatelse can i say,

This is quite unusual of me to post a lengthy message. Take time to read through it is worth it.

My name is Nigeria, I need Re-Building and not Re-Branding

I am Nigeria. I am divided into 36 unequal states, plus my capital territory, christened Abuja. I have millions of acres of arable land and billions of cubic litres of water, but I cannot feed myself. So I spend $1 billion to import rice and another $2 billion to import milk. I produce rice, but don't eat it. I have 60 million cattle but no milk. I have the capacity to feed the whole of Africa but I import most food instead. I am hungry, please help and re-brand me.

I drive the latest car in the world but have no roads neither can I boast of manufacturing a bicycle's tyre. I lose family and friends everyday on my roads for which funds have been allocated to build and rehabilitate but the fund has been looted. I lose my young, my old, and my most brainy and productive people to the potholes, craters and crevasses they travel on everyday. I am in permanent mourning, please re-brand me.

My school has no teacher and my classroom has no roof. I take lecture notes through the window and live with 15 others in a single room. All my professors have gone abroad, some of the rest are awaiting visas. Those that remain, depends on money raked from the sales of hand-out to students.
My students receives lectures for a maximum of 3 months in a year due to lecturers' strike or students' boycott of lectures because of lack of better condition of service and deplorable condition on campus. That explains why I have university graduates, who are semi- illiterates. I want a future, please re-brand me.

Malaria, typhoid and many other preventable diseases send me to hospitals which have no doctors, no medicines and no power. So my wife gives birth with candle light and surgery is performed by quacks. All the nurses have gone abroad and the rest are waiting to go also. I have the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world and future generations are dying before me. I am hopeless, hapless and helpless, please re-brand me.

I wanted change so I stood all day long to cast my vote. But even before I could vote, the results had been announced. When I dared to speak out, silence was enthroned by bullets. My rulers are my oppressors, and my policemen are my terrors. I am ruled by men in mufti, but I am not a democracy. I have no verve, no vote, no voice, please re-brand me.

I have over 50 million youths with no jobs, no present and no future. So my sons in the North have become street urchins and his brothers in the South have become militants. My nephews die of thirst in the Sahara and his cousins drown in the waters of the Mediterranean. My daughters walk the streets of Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, while her sisters parade the streets of Rome and Amsterdam. I am inconsolable, please re-brand me.

My people cannot sleep at night and cannot relax by day. They cannot use ATM machines, nor use cheque. My children sleep through staccato of AK 47's see through the mist of tear gas, while we all inhale Carbon Monoxide, poisonous Co 2 from popular 'I big pass my neighbour' (portable generators) and 'Okada'.
The leaders have looted everything on ground and below. They walk the land with haughty strides and fly the skies with private jets (28 of which were bought in the last 12 months). They have stolen the future of generations yet unborn and have money they cannot spend in several lifetimes, but their brothers die of hunger. I want justice, please re-brand me.

I can produce anything, but import everything. So my toothpick is made in China; my toothpaste is made in South Africa; my salt is made in Ghana; my butter is made in Ireland; my milk is made in Holland; my shoe is made in Italy; my vegetable oil is made in Malaysia; my biscuit is made in Indonesia; my chocolate is made in Turkey and my table water made in France. My taste is far-flung and foreign. I no longer cook at home but take pride in eating at take away outlet fashioned after Western style of living.
Anything made in my land is inferior, I prefer those made in England, America or Europe. To crown it all, items made in my land but specifically sent abroad with made in England label are bought back from 'Oyinbo' land at 5 times the original price it would have gone had it been sold as home made, please re-brand me.

My people are cancerous from the greed of their friends who bleach palm oil with chemicals; my children died because they drank ‘My Pikin’ with NAFDAC numbers; my poor die because kerosene explodes in their faces; my land is dead because all the trees have been cut down; flood kills my people yearly because the drainage is clogged; my fish are dead because the oil companies dump waste in my rivers; my communities are vanishing into the huge yawns of gully erosion, and nothing is being done. My livelihood is in jeopardy, and I am in the uttermost depths of despondence, please re-brand me.

I have genuine leather but choose to eat it. So I spend a billion dollars to import fake leather. I have four refineries, but prefer to import fuel, so I waste more billions to import petrol. I have no security in my country, but would rather send troops to keep the peace in another man’s land. I have 160 dams, but cannot get water to drink, so I buy ‘pure’ water that roils my innards. I have a million children waiting to enter universities, but my ivory dungeons can only take a tenth. I have no power, but choose to flare gas but vote billion dollars every year to generate electricity but not a single watt has come from it. So, my people have learnt to see in the dark and stare at the glare of naked flares. I have no direction, please re-brand me.

My people pray to God every morning and every night, but commit every crime known to man because re-branded identities will never alter the tunes of inbred rhythms. Just as the drums of heritage heralds the frenzied jingles, remember - the Nigerian soul can only be Nigerian - fighting free from the cold embrace of a government that has no spring, no sense, no shame. So we watch the possessed, frenzied dance, drenched in silent tears as freedom is locked up in democracy’s empty cellars. I need guidance, please re-brand me.

But then, why can I not simply be me, without being re-branded? Or does my complexion cloud the colour of my character? Does my location limit the lengths of my liberty? Does the spirit of my conviction shackle my soul? Does my mien maim the mine of my mind? And is this life worth re-branding? Is it re-branding that I need or complete re-building?
Others blame my calamities on the colonial master that has left my shore some 49 years ago. Without deceiving myself, I know I have problems, who will deliver me?
May be what I need is to be re-born, Christians call it being born-again. Turning to a higher authority or changing direction. I mean to sincerely own up and turn to the man up-stair, may be, just maybe solution will come from there.

To re-build a wobbling structure, there is need for dismantling of existing one (remember, if the foundation be destroyed, what can the righteous do?). Shall I then consider the idea muted by some of my own who have fled abroad? Some call for 'Separation for Co-operation' others call for true Federalism while others are yet asking for the return to Parliamentary system. Which way do I go? In less than 2 months from now I will be 49 years old. I do not want to enter my golden age without direction, so, please, help me God. Re-mould and Re-Build me.

Nairalanders,

Permit me to truly say that the Nigerian spirits still does exist in our lives and in some of the things we do.

In Abuja today, i saw a large cream better put an enormous crowd of Nigerians trooping out in green colours to cheer up the super eagles playing against tunis team in the national stadium.

The issue here is football which is either to be won or lost but my question is cant us Nigerians replicate the same commitment to other burning national issues like strikes, communal clashes, religious riots and militancy?

So many people i saw around the national stadium wore jerseys depicting nigerian colours or something similar because you cannot deferentiate between Ibo, Hausa, Yoruba, boko Haram, militant or Kanuri man with all these colours.

Let me ask someone, why is it that our non-football national issues have really been taken over by so much apathy? why dont we seem to care about all of these huh?

Can we have this large crowd in place to pull down bad governance, to stand still for credible elections amongst other issues i guess all of us truly deserve an answer

@@@@@@@@@@EVERYBODY

What i have to say here is still the same issue of our corrupt officials we have in governance.
Points here are:

1. When FIFA has given right to AIT already NTA should not parade themselves anymore as right owners.

2. Upgrading from SD to HD should not at all be that costly some of us read engr. why would you need to upgrade simply purchase new equipment
when you can get to the market and buy a new dvd player why would you bother urself upgrading ur vcd to dvd via ur radionic does it makes
sense no.
3. Finally, some NTA engineers are in for another round of chop make i chop which is destroying our nation till today

May the Good Lord help as a nation

That says it all. I don't know why people come here with a lot of unfounded assumptions.
Nigeria as a country looks faulted on so many fronts. Refering to freedom fighting for alams and co. The point here is when this militants sees Nigeria as a failed state, they can go ahead and manipulate so as to achieve what ever gains they desired, that is not to say there are no true agitations.

Let me state here that FGN should in a matter of urgency instill true federalism or co-federalism and come to ask me if other things including all these agitations and clashes will not fall in place

If you check the Chinese overtures, it is just like a way of toasting the Nigerian gov. our gov looks like a bride to the eu nations but now the asian tigers are now trying to take that away with all these freebies.

Is someone listening to mehuhhuh

PoliticsRe: Controversy Trails Planned Re-sale Of Nitel, M-tel by ideas78(op): 2:56pm On Jul 23, 2009
Hello Everyone,

Going by the controversies, happenings and mis-happenings year-in year-out of the issue of Nitel/Mtel corporation, this has pushed me to ask one recurring question? Is there a hidden agenda that is making successful privatization of these companies impossible? I think Nigerians deserve an answer if not answers.
I noticed in 2001, IIL London company bidded for Nitel for around $1.317billion dollars, the Bid was rejected for the cause we are still waiting to know. Orascom Telecom came back with a paltry $256.5 million which also was rejected a poor bid though.
Lately we eventually have transcorp which Nitel/Mtel also proved too hot to handle.
Why as a country should we be giving out our prized assets like these to management firms (Pentascope Netherlands, Transcorp etc) that are incapable of reviving their own company rather than doing it for a global brand like Nitel.
My point is that the greatness of any nation doesn’t really lies(not by 100%) in the Human or Natural resources (see Niger Delta and what it has turned us to as a nation for years now) but in the institutions they are able to promote and project to her people and the outside world.
Consider Etisalat for instance, this is a priceless Telco from UAE for over three to four decades in operation a highly celebrated company, today it is a global brand moving beyond her frontiers and buying stakes in other countries telecommunication companies.
Another example is Bharti Airtel an Indian company founded just in 1985 but now has a revenue going to the tune of $6 billion dollars you would say every great company of the world is product of good accountability.
In 2001 August, when GSM was introduced into the country some operators came into Nigeria to sell and project their brands. See what has become of them today, Nigerians are indirectly celebrating them if not for anything but what they have achieved in terms of telecommunication business in Nigeria. Why all these can’t be replicated in the case of Nitel.
I bechanced to be a telecom professional, ever since I was in school watching closely the activities of this ailing company I see a brand that looks unmatched in terms of infrastructural developments and equipments( international gateway , SAT3 etc),Today Nitel and coy is now regarded as a carcass waiting to devoured (or should what should I have said) by an unnamed company yet.
It is high time we woke up as country and see the greatness that lies in us and our institutions and do what is right and what is best for our nation to be truly great and stop murmuring for not being invited for G-8, G-20 or for Obama snubbing us for Ghana.
Let’s come to think of it all of us cry of unemployment in all the fields. NITEL as a company if well managed is capable of absorbing so many jobless graduates in the country if not getting some of them back on the right track (because now you see graduates of electrical engineering teaching math in secondary schools).
NITEL, PHCN, NNPC to mention but a few are our national institutions begging for revival and accountability and not a national cake waiting to be sliced on the table of few individuals.
TravelRe: Why Do People 'Disrespect' London? by ideas78: 11:21am On Jul 23, 2009
All of you talk about London hen hmmmmmmmmmmm

Has anyone been to Shenzhen in China huh??

A lovely place to be no need to disrespect a place every place on earth has her own good or bad. London was never the way it is today 200 years ago, so also is Nigeria same number of years ago.

If the present generations of Nigerian leader are incapable of making a good nationhood out of naija as we are seen today another generation will.

Malaysia one of the fastest growing industrialized nation of the world did not start big.

So lets keep up the hope to make Nigeria a better place.

I am very happy for the consciousness of the present Naija youths, they are really awake to the concepts of what makes a country great, i strongly believe we can make our country great again.

, for now
