Dr Doyin Salami has revealed that the aggregate inflow of Foreign exchange into the country hit $24Billion in 3rd quarter as against $15.33Billion recorded in 2nd quarter in 2016. If we come out of it in a manner that sends us back to it two years down the line, because what we did to come out of it was unsustainable, that would be too bad. If we come out of it in the right way, it is going to be gradual. So, for me I see growth around one and two per cent for 2017. My expectation for inflation in 2017 is going to be around 13 per cent. My hope is that the central bank would be a bit more consistent because last year, those of us responsible for monetary policy managed to speak from both sides of our mouths. • Says, its financial system shows least progress Iyobosa Uwugiaren in Abuja The lack of an efficient and resilient financial system is still holding back inclusive and sustainable growth in emerging markets across the globe including Nigeria, a global financial and economy consultant, PwC Project Blue, has stated in its recent findings. The financial expert also said that Nigeria had the highest percentage of its population living in poverty, with its financial system showing the least progress of all the seven emerging markets: Nigeria, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa. ‘’In five of the eight key areas, Nigeria’s financial system scores significantly below PwC’s fit-for-purpose targets, holding back inclusive and sustainable growth. However, the success of Nigeria’s auto-enrolment pension model is a bright spot,’’ the respected institution said. The report is entitled: ‘Geared up for growth: Shaping a fit-for- purpose financial system’. In the paper, PwC sets out what an efficient, resilient and inclusive financial system looks like across eight key dimensions; and how leading emerging markets – Nigeria, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa – rate against its ‘fit for purpose’ targets. The assessment highlights considerable room for further improvements in key areas, ranging from financial inclusion to pensions and protection. ‘’While growth in emerging markets continues to outstrip developed counterparts and hundreds of millions of people have been lifted out of poverty, developing a well-functioning financial system remains critical to tackling poverty and sustaining economic growth over the long term’’, PwC added. ‘’This can’t be said about the other African country in PwC’s assessment. Not only has Nigeria by far the highest percentage of its population living in poverty, its financial system is also showing the least progress of all seven emerging markets. ‘’In five of the eight key areas, Nigeria’s financial system scores significantly below PwC’s fit-for-purpose targets, holding back inclusive and sustainable growth. However, the success of Nigeria’s auto-enrolment pension model is a bright spot. ‘’Emerging markets need a robust and broad-based financial infrastructure to channel funds efficiently, draw people into the market economy and enable them to share in the benefits.’’ According to PwC, the financial system in Nigeria is sig........ FORMER Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has said the economic recession in Nigeria would last longer than expected. Obi stated this while inaugurating a building donated to the Department of Mass Communication, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, by the institution’s Dean of Social Sciences, Prof. Chinyere Okunna. He said: “I laugh when I hear people say the recession will soon end. This is not true. A critical analysis of the 2017 budget will show you that the recession will not end soon.” Obi, however, insisted that there was hope if the government changed the spending system. “But there is hope. The hope is for us to change our spending system. Government should cut down the cost of running government. “If you see any government spending extravagantly, you shout and nothing will happen to you because it is your money that is being spent. That is one of the ways to tackle this recession”, he added. Read more@http://nigerianpilot.com/2017-budget-shows-recession-wont-end-soon-peter-obi/

Welcome to change NIGERIANS. The biggest SCAM of our time |
By Bimbola Oyesola Over 6,000 workers in the maritime sector have lost their jobs in the last one year due to the current recession. Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), yesterday, in Lagos, said besides the job loss, many companies in the sector had folded up, while several shipping companies had relocated to other countries due to the prevailing economic situation. President General of MWUN, Mr. Emmanuel Anthony Nted, who stated this at the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) and Special Delegates Conference, in Lagos, lamented that the union was facing a very difficult task of protecting the jobs of members in all the branches. According to Nted, where Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)/Condition of Services Negotiations were due for review, the union was forced to accept marginal increases where possible and trade off increment with withdrawal of redundancy threats. He said, “the economic recession is really affecting and biting the union very hard. I feel sad to say that over 6000 members of our union have lost their jobs since the recession began and many more are facing job insecurity, thus exposing the lives of their families to serious jeopardy. In fact, Intels alone retrenched over 3,000 workers because of harsh operating environment. Many shipping companies have been forced to close shop and have since relocated to other countries, thus compounding the job crisis in the industry. We sincerely implore the government to find urgent solution to recession before things go out of hand.” On the access roads to the ports, the union’s President General said: “Another issue that is of grave concern to us is the deplorable state of the access roads to our seaports, which remains a national shame and embarrassment. The government seems not bothered about its negative consequences on our national economy and the daily fatal accidents inflicted on the citizens besides the man hours spent on the roads. Those roads have become not only death traps, but also expressways to mortuaries. Apart from the airports and land borders, the ports are other entry points for foreigners into the country. “It is very sad that the access roads to the ports, the gateway to the nation’s economy, can be so abandoned like what have at present. We have written several letters including issuance of ultimatums over these roads to no avail. However, the only good news is that the management of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), last week, wrote to inform us that contracts have been awarded for the rehabilitation of the roads. There is no sign of the rehabilitation of job yet. Nonetheless, we are watching and if after three to six months we do not see concrete evidence on ground, we shall be compelled to take necessary action without further notice.” According to Nted, “on the issue of the Tally Clerks and On-board Securitymen, we wish to state that we have not relented in our efforts to ensure that they get their rights. However, the issue is in court and as law abiding union, we will not say much. But we are hopeful that the court will give the workers justice and their jobs will be restored to them in our seaports and jetties nationwide. “Our government seems genuinely concerned about the level of hardship in the country, but does not seem to know what to do to end the recession. Hence, we call on all Nigerians to seek the intervention of God through their prayers because without God, all things are impossible.” Secondly, the Government should look beyond the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and assemble a credible economic team (without tribal/religious bias) with proven knowledge and ability to pull our economy out of recession within the shortest time.” He also noted that salary increase for workers in 2017 through the minimum wage may be a mirage as the present economy cannot sustain it. From Jeff Amechi Agbodo, Onitsha President Muhammadu Buhari may have heard enough of the prowess of the businessmen and women in Anambra State, particularly the manufacturers. Therefore, the President recently sent out his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, to Anambra State to visit major manufacturers and bring back word to him. And what the Vice President saw on his fact-finding visit was cheering as he could not hide his joy over what the entrepreneurs in the state had done. He specifically noted that entrepreneurs in Onitsha and Nnewi have given hope to many unemployed youths in the country, promising that the Federal Government would support them to continue to help the government in creating employment, especially for youths. Osinbajo, on arrival in Anambra State, had performed the groundbreaking ceremony of Eastern Distilleries and Food Industries Limited, makers of non-alcoholic premium brand, in Onitsha, the commercial hub of Anambra State. He was accompanied to the groundbreaking ceremony by Governor Willie Obiano and Dr. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Productivity. The premium beverage factory, which is located at Harbour Industrial Estate, Onitsha, when completed would employ over 800 people and provide indirect employment to over 2,500 others. The Vice President, while laying the foundation stone of the facility, expressed happiness over the resilience and fortitude of Chris Oranu Chidume, managing director of Eastern Distilleries and Food Industries Limited, saying that he has done well even in the face of extreme difficulty. He described the Eastern Distilleries and Food Industries Limited as a unique company that would become great in the country and commended the management and staff of the company for steering it successfully to its present state. Osinbajo said he was in Onitsha on the instruction of President Buhari and promised that the Federal Government would support entrepreneurs in the country to continue to assist government in creating employment for the people. His words: “I have seen the sheer enterprise that is going on in this place, the business acumen, the entrepreneurial skills, and it has become very clear that this is truly the hot-bed of industrialisation in Nigeria and I am very pleased to see all of these. “I am here on behalf of Mr. President to see for myself firsthand the types of industries that are going on locally and, of course, we have chosen to come here first because this is one of the most active places in the country. “In whatever way we can assist we will and we are already discussing with Governor Willie Obiano, who has laid out so many things he expects us to do and, hopefully, we will be able to do them. “You could also notice that I came along with the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige, because job creation is so important to this administration. “So, I am excited to be here, I have seen a lot and I will be reporting back to Mr. President and whatever we can do to support the Harbour Industrial Estate in Onitsha and other industrial estates in the country, we will do it.” He also applauded the entrepreneurial capabilities of the management and staff of Krisoral & Company Limited for keeping on their business despite the economic recession in the country. Osinbajo went on a tour of the ultra-modern factories owned by Krisoral & Company Limited, even as Obiano, who was also visibly impressed with activities at the site, observed that the company would continue to grow to provide employment for the people of Anambra State, which was re-echoed by the minister of Labour and Productivity. Group Managing Director, Krisoral Group of Companies, Chris Oranu Chidume, while guiding the Vice President and his entourage on a tour of the Roll-On-Pilfer-Proof (ROPP) and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) closure factories, explained that the firm has scaled up the capacity of its plants, from two billion caps per annum to four billion caps per annum; an increase of 100 per cent. He explained that Krisoral & Company Limited produces ROPP caps of different dimensions, HDPE caps, which come in carbonated or non-carbonated formsm printed or plain of different colours and in the sizes of 28mm, 30mm and 41.5mm. The company also produces drug dispensing cups and PVC shrink labels. “It is the first indigenous company in Nigeria to have full process of ROPP cap and the only company today that has top and side embossments technology. The factories directly employs about 120 staff and indirectly employs over 800 persons,” he said. Oranu also explained that the capacities of the two plants as at 2012 were about two billion caps per annum, which has now been upgraded to about four billion caps per annum, stressing that a lot of expansion has occurred between 2012, the year they were commissioned by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and now, 2016. This capacity, according to Oranu, is enough to relieve companies in Nigeria, especially pharmaceutical and beverage companies, of the rigours and stress of importing closures from abroad. He noted that many people may not know that such a facility exists locally and thus may still be importing, complaining that the Central Bank of Nigeria is strangulating their businesses “by not giving them funds to import, in other words, paying more for less.” He, therefore, called on the end user companies to utilize this opportunity to add value to their business, pointing out that what they are looking for overseas are here at their doorstep. Osinbajo also visited the Pokobros Group of Companies, where he commended the manufacturers and industrialists in Onitsha, and other parts of Anambra State for job creation through their companies. The VP urged Nigerians to emulate Anambra businessmen and others that have invested in the country to create job and empower the youths through industries and factories and by s doing contributing to the GDP of the country. In his remarks, chairman of Harbour Industrial Layout Association and MD of Pokobros, Chief P.A. Okonkwor, told the Vice President that their major problem was power supply, which affects factorie’ steady production, adding that most often they pay bills for electricity they do not consume. Other problems, he said, include foreign exchange control measures of the CBN as he requested direct window for manufacturers; flooding, export process zone, the Second Niger Bridge, which he said would ease the flow of movement in and out of Onitsha. Okonkwor also called on the Federal Government to review the current lists of goods whose forex financing were excluded from the official forex market by the CBN, saying some of the items were critical input to manufacturing operations where there were no local manufacturer/suppliers.
