Travel / Travel Guide To Banjul, Gambia From Nigeria by igelomo(m): 1:23pm On Feb 04, 2015
Even though it is the capital city of The Gamiba, Banjul is not the largest city in the country; it remains one of the most popular.

About Banjul
Capital of The Gambia, Banjul is a rapidly developing city situated along the West African country’s coast. The city of Banjul is in a greater metropolitan area that’s home to some 357,000 people. The city is actually located on an island known both as St. Mary’s Island and Banjul Island

Travel to gambia from nigeria

Banjul is The Gambia’s main urban area and the African nation’s economic and bureaucratic hub. The industries of peanut processing, palm oil and palm wood are all vital to the economy of Banjul and its environs

Travel visa
The best part is that you don’t need a visa to The Gambia from Nigeria. Infact, citizens of member countries of ECOWAS (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo) do not require a visa to gain entry into The Gambia.

So what then?….make sure you have an international passport which is still valid for at least 6 months, a paid hotel reservation and some amount of money to show you will be able to take care of yourself during your stay in the country. Once all these are taken care of, then you can buy your return ticket.

Travel ticket
Many international travelers reach the city of Banjul through its Yundum /Banjul International Airport. Each year, the airport serves increasing numbers of passengers visiting The Gambia.

Banjul airport, gambia
Banjul International Airport
There are no direct flights from Nigeriaat the moment. Gambia Bird used to fly directly from Lagos but stopped few months ago during the Ebola crisis. They might still resume flights though but in the mean time, you will be connecting two other airports (Lome & Dakar) before getting to Banjul from Lagos on Asky Air and Senegal Airline.

On the average, a return ticket will cost you about N235, 000 or more.

Weather and Heath issues
There has never been Ebola in The Gambia and it has remained this way since the outbreak in West Africa first came to prominence in March 2014. The Gambia does not share land borders with any of the current Ebola-infected countries, Guinea, Sierra Leone or Liberia.

The Gambian government have, since the 21st August, suspended all flights into The Gambia from these countries – including restrictions on anyone that has visited any of the affected countries within 21 days of travel.

Uninterrupted sunshine and high daytime temperatures with almost no rainfall is experienced from November to June with only small fluctuations in temperature from winter to summer; however from July to October the humidity level is high as the tropical sun is interrupted by short but spectacular showers.

Note: Temperatures during the summer can reach 42°C.

What to expect
Although the coastline around the resort area of Kololi suffers from erosion due to strong Atlantic currents, the area still remains very popular with holidaymakers. There are wide sandy beaches at Kotu, Bijilo, Banjul and Cape Point.

Banjul beach

The Gambia has no migrating wildebeest, giraffes or any of the large animals commonly associated with Africa. However without leaving your hotel you can see a breathtaking variety of bird life, in addition to monkeys, baboons and crocodiles can be seen nearby and then far up the river, hippos.

Currency

The Gambia’s currency is the dalasi, with N4.50k to 1 dalasis in February 2015 in exchange bureaus. As with all currencies, the dalasi rate to the Naira can fluctuate.

Currency can easily be obtained at the airport, most hotels, banks or bureaux de change and there are a few ATMs where cash can be obtained.

Although some restaurants and hotels in The Gambia accept credit cards, it is not wise to rely on them. Debit cards are still more restricted – you should always check with your bank that your card will be accepted and whether there is any surcharge.

Language
English is the official language and language of instruction in most schools (The Gambia is a former British Colony). However, various tribal languages are used by the Gambians to converse between themselves.

Getting around
Taxis are readily available outside your hotel. Taxis can be hired for a specific journey or for a half or full day, in both cases it is best to agree the price in advance; there should be a price board together with a taxi supervisor to help.

The taxi waiting time is charged at approximately N295.00 per hour, but often the first couple of waiting hours are free. Bush taxis are available which are often very crowded but offer a very economical way of travelling and a way of absorbing part of the local flavour.

Travel / Re: General South Africa Visa Enquiries by igelomo(m): 12:44pm On Jul 15, 2014
The South African government on Monday said it would not budge on its new visa rules but pledged to “deal” with problems raised in the implementation of those regulations.

The new immigration laws have sparked confusion and panic among Nigerians and other foreigners, particularly the 250,000 Zimbabweans who acquired permits under the 2010 special dispensation exercise.

South African Airways and other airlines also recently implemented new rules for travelling with kids to South Africa.

The new regime outlines a clear distinction between short-stay visas and long-stay permanent residence permits.

What are the new rules?

General/Partners/Spouses

Visa applications should be made by applicants in person and those wanting to change the status of their visa can no longer do so in South Africa but have to do so at missions in their home countries.
The government now asks for couples to prove they have been in a relationship for at least two years, and also that spouses of work permit holders apply for certain visas abroad.
If a partner or spouse was in a previous marriage, it is necessary to provide official documents that prove the dissolution of such marriage either by divorce or the death of the other spouse.
The updated regulations also state that life partners will need to attend separate but simultaneous interviews to determine the authenticity of the existence of their relationship.
Those that have applied for visas before the new rules came into operation are exempted.
Visitor’s Visa holders who wish to change the terms or status of their visa must submit an application no less than 60 days prior to the current visa’s date of expiration.
Those wishing to extend a stay for longer than three months must provide a police clearance certificate from their home country.
New regulations also state that one cannot change from a Visitor’s Visa to another type of visa; these applications for change of conditions must be made at a mission abroad, i.e. an embassy or consulate, where the applicant is an ordinary resident or holds citizenship.
Under the “old legislation”, it was possible to apply for a temporary residence permit whilst using a visitor’s visa but the “new legislation” now prohibits any foreigner from applying for a temporary residence permit using a visitor’s visa.
Under the old rules, foreigners waiting for their visas to be renewed could leave the country as long as they had a note from Home Affairs acknowledging receipt of their new visa application.
Anyone that has overstayed their visa is prohibited from re-entering the country and branded as “undesirable”.
Previously, the undesirable list was reserved for those with criminal records and the like, but now the government has thrown “overstayers” into that list, regardless of their circumstances.
Those that have overstayed by between one and 30 days face a 12-month ban, while anyone who has overstayed by more than 30 days faces a ban of five years.
However, exceptional circumstances include if an applicant is in need of life saving medical treatment or is an accompanying spouse or child of a business or work visa holder who wish to apply for a study or work visa.

Intra-Company Visas

This visa will now be available for 4 years but is non-renewable.
The employee in question must be employed with the foreign office/ business for a minimum of six months before being eligible for transfer to South Africa.

Study Visa/ Exchange Visa

Holders of a Study Visa may not conduct part-time work exceeding 20 hours of labour a week.
Both Study and Exchange Visas will only be issued for the duration of the study period or exchange programme respectively.
An exchange visa (for persons under 25 years) will not be granted to conduct work pertaining to an undesirable work as published by the Minister in the gazette, after consultation with the Minister of Trade and Industry.
South African immigration “Experts” are advising any foreigners still in the country with expired visas, awaiting renewals, to remain in South Africa – if they can.

Travel / How To Start A Career As A Travel Agent by igelomo(m): 3:55pm On Nov 28, 2013
Several people are seeking careers that can provide them with the luxury of job satisfaction, career advancement and the opportunity for travel and adventures. The attraction of the travel industry for this lot is therefore a no brainer.

We think you should know this first before reading further: If you think the travel industry is where you run to when all attempts to get a ‘White Collar’ job has failed, then you are in for a big shock.

A lot of ignorant people think the job of a reservation agent is not professional enough and they could easily jump in and secure a job. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is not so.

All over the world, there are reservation agents and there are RESERVATION agents - if you know what we mean :-)

So where do I start from? A familiar question we keep getting from our teeming followers on all our social media platforms most especially on Twitter and Facebook is "where do I begin?....."

Now back to why we are here. There is no template anywhere in Nigeria that teaches you how to become a professional reservation agent and how to secure a good job afterwards, but our experience in this industry has been able to able to teach us enough.

Let us begin by listing the following points. We will then proceed to treat them one after the other:

• A university degree (important but not compulsory)

• Basic training as a ticket & reservation officer (compulsory)

• Familiarity with popular booking platforms (compulsory)

• IATA training and certification (important but not compulsory)

Now that we have listed the basic requirements needed, we will take time to explain each step below:

A University degree

We are sure you must have hard that you don’t need a University degree to become a reservation agent, or that the type of degree obtained is not even relevant. To an extent, this is true.

However, experience has taught us that a good university degree would not only help your personal development and exposure in the industry, but is also most likely to get you a good job very fast.

If you however don’t have a degree yet or you are running a part-time programme somewhere, you are not left out. The job is OPEN to everyone irrespective of your educational background and gender.

Basic training as a ticket & reservation officer

This is one of the most important steps in becoming a reservation officer. This training equips you with all the basic knowledge and understanding you will need to build your career.

There are several training schools spread across Nigeria that offer trainings to people, but you need to be careful before deciding on any of them.

One of the key things to look out for before choosing is to make conduct research about the training school. Find out whether they are registered as a company in Nigeria and how long they have been in existence (though this might not that important but for the sake of integrity, it might help).

Don’t just Google up the school over the internet and put a call across to the contact number you picked up off a website – instead, you might wanna pay a visit to their office before making any financial commitment.

When you eventually pay a visit, try to interact with the present students of the school to find out if they actually deliver on the promises listed on their website; a word of caution - most of them don’t!

The cost of getting basic training in ticketing and reservation in these schools vary but usually hovers between N50, 000 and N120, 000 for a two weeks training. This depends on the training school, the facilities available to every student and whether it includes complimentary breakfast and lunch.

Is it possible to do a personal study without having to go to a formal training school? Yes it is, but if you have to consider what you get by interacting with other students and the fact that you can get any answer to any question you have on the spot, we would always recommend you pay for formal training.

Okay guys, we will stop here for now! The concluding part of the post will be updated next week.

What a very self centered selfish human being you are, so there is nothing wrong with driving traffic away from this website to your blog? What planet are you living on?

I allowed many of your threads with links to stay but after reading this garbage from you i'm going to remove every single link attached to all your previous threads, i promise you that.

Go ahead and do just that if that will make you happy. FYI..i am not driving traffic away, its done everywhere in the world. Check other Big forums, you will see it. NOBODY can drive away traffic from this forum, it is here to stay. I dont see what the problem is if smaller websites try to improve their stats and moreover, my blog is NOT in direct competition with Nairaland. So CALM DOWN.

No prob.

Because you moderate this thread does not mean you can just use your supposed power without discretion. I have a blog that i run and there is nothing wrong if i put up a teaser on nairaland about tips for first time travelers to Dubai and then put the link for readers to continue the reading on my blog. its just for traffic purposes and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I am not even a travel agent and i am not asking anyone to pay any money. Its just a GENERAL TIPS. Even there is an existing thread about that on nairaland, mine is conspicuously different.

What is wrote is more like a complete tips rather than the scattered tips different people gave on the thread. It actually saves people the stress of having to sieve through the numerous tips that other users have given.

The next thing i knew, you blocked the topic. That is very WRONG and i think you are doing more than what you have been directed to do. I am pissed at you right now and to tell you the truth, IT HURTS.
Travel / First Time Travelers To Dubai: Things You Need To Know by igelomo(m): 6:28am On Oct 15, 2013
Arguably, Duabi is the most visited city after London for most Nigerians.

This can be largely attributed to the ease at which the UAE country (Dubai) grants visas to intending visitors including Nigerians.

Initially, a lot of Nigerian travelers who ply the Dubai – Lagos route were mostly traders but as the most popular city in the Arab country continues to develop with exotic locations and hotels, people now visit for leisure and event purposes.

Popular Nigerian R &B singer, Tu Face Idibia recently had his wedding in Dubai with a lot of other Nigerian celebrities in attendance.

It is funny how so many travellers prepare to go to a place like Dubai and seemingly do not understand certain things that should be kept in mind.
Dubai is a very exciting city for all types of travellers but it’s important you make all necessary travelling arrangements before leaving home.

Travel / Review Of Online Travel Agencies In Nigeria by igelomo(m): 5:28pm On Sep 13, 2013
With the increase in internet penetration in Nigeria which now boasts of about 76% of the entire population and mobile phone usage of about 110 million: Nigerians travellers are beginning to embrace the era of DIY vacations.

These days, anyone with a debit card (the “regular” ones issues by the commercial banks) and Internet access can take off for a three-day jaunt to Dubai. They can bid for a cheap hotel room, book a rental car and pinpoint and secure the last seat left on a commercial flight–all the day before leaving.

Travelers now have more at their disposal—online travel agencies, review sites, booking apps (hotel & airline ticket)—at their fingertips than ever before.

But when it comes to expert advice about a destination and customization, you can’t beat a good agent.

If you are one of those that still doubt why a travel agent is very important, you can read the article we wrote on that here

Here is our review of online travel agencies that offer travel packages in Nigeria
