Disney Sets Frankenweenie and John Carter of Mars Release Dates
Source: Walt Disney Pictures
August 9, 2010

Walt Disney Pictures has announced release dates for two of its anticipated movies for 2012.

The studio is targeting a March 9, 2012 release for the Tim Burton-produced Frankenweenie, written by John August. The film is based on Burton's 1984 short about a pet dog brought back to life by his loyal owner. While the original "Frankenweenie" was a live-action project, the new one will be made using stop-motion animation and be in 3D.

On June 8, 2012, the studio will release the Andrew Stanton-directed John Carter of Mars, starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Hayden Church and Willem Dafoe.

Based on the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Barsoom Series," the film chronicles the journey of Civil-War veteran John Carter (Kitsch), who finds himself battling a new and mysterious war amidst a host of strange Martian inhabitants, including Tars Tarkas (Dafoe) and Dejah Thoris (Collins).

Timur Bekmambetov to direct Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Source: Empire
August 9, 2010

Timur Bekmambetov, previously attached only as producer, has announced his intention to direct Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter in an interview with Empire.

Describing the film as being in a similar vein as Nightwatch, Bekmambetov says that production will ideally begin this winter and that the property is being looked at as a potential franchise. Perhaps a tongue-in-cheek comment, the director claims that the film is in no ways comedy but is, instead, "a very entertaining, epic history lesson."

The article also offers updates on a number of other films Bekmambetov has been connected to, including a mention that he would like to direct the Fox version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, to be produced alongside Ridley Scott. Unlike the competing Disney version, this version will offer a "modernized" take.

Moby Dick, meanwhile, is still in the scripting stages but will, apparently, feature a cast of super-powered characters who battle against a supernatural whale.

Other projects include Red Asphalt, a horror movie about drunk driving for release in 3D (which Bekmambetov describes as "one big car chase"wink, the potential remake of Black Lightning, which he will only produce, and (also in a producer-only capacity) The Knights Templar. Wanted 2 is currently waiting for James McAvoy to finish X-Men: First Class.

Hannover, Red Bear Planning Animated Terminator 3000
Source: Hannover House, Deadline
August 13, 2010

Hannover House, the entertainment distribution division of Target Development Group, Inc., has entered into a feature film development venture with Vancouver-based Red Bear Entertainment, for Terminator 3000, envisioned as a $70-million dollar budgeted, 3D animated feature film based on the characters and situations introduced in the original Terminator feature. Hannover House C.E.O. Eric Parkinson previously served as C.E.O. of Hemdale Home Video, Inc. and Hemdale Communications, Inc., and handled the distribution of the original Terminator feature.

Story details for Terminator 3000 are being kept under close wraps, but the writers and production team have a stated goal of minimizing violence in order to obtain a PG-13 level of material.

UPDATE: Maybe the news about the $70 million computer-animated film was premature because now Deadline is reporting that Pacificor, the company that owns the rights to the Terminator franchise have sent a cease and desist letter to Hannover House following the announcement earlier today. Hannover House CEO Eric Parkinson, former head of the Home Video division of Hemdale, who made the original Terminator, claims that he owns the animation rights to the property which weren't included in the sale to Carolco.

Hemdale produced and distributed director James Cameron's original Terminator feature, but released the sequel rights in 1990 to Carolco, which later transferred the rights to ultimately end up under the control of Halcyon Media. Santa Barbara based Pacificor, LLC prevailed in the most recent auction and transfer of rights to the franchise in January, and retains approval and licensing authority over the proposed Terminator 3000 project.

Hannover House and Red Bear Entertainment will release details of the production timing, financing and principal production personnel later this year, in advance of a proposed January, 2011 start.

Karl Urban is the New Judge Dredd
Source:Empire Online
August 13, 2010

A few weeks back, there were murmurings out of Comic-Con that the new Judge Dredd had been cast and that it would be none other than New Zealand's own Karl Urban ("Bones" McCoy from Star Trek with upcoming comic movies Red and Priest). Empire Online has gotten confirmation from the film's producers Andrew MacDonald and Allon Reich, who were asked about it during a Q 'n' A at BFI's Movie-Con III, currently taking place in London. MacDonald confirmed the casting reported as a scoop by Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnston last month.

Here's what else MacDonald said about the project during the Q 'n' A:

“The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago. Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real. There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously."

Director Pete Travis (Vantage Point) will begin shooting Judge Dredd in Johannesburg, South Africa with the same people who made Neill Blomkamp's District 9 later this year.

It's ok. My mom uses it. I find it a little too powdery for my tastes (it reminds me of the smell of a powder that used to be in salons when i was a child- it was in a blue metal container that had a lady wearing an evening dress on it- i think the word "moonlight" or "midnight" was in the name).

To me it's kind of a "mature" woman's scent.
