Despite the growing economic recession, caused by downward trend in global oil prices, the Bank of Industry, BOI, has been able to withstand the test of time. Beyond its impressive financial growth, it has also made considerable strides in different areas, especially in the micro, small and medium enterprises, MSME, sector of the nation’s economy. For instance, the bank’s interventions and supports in the emerging sectors of the economy, led to the disbursement of N83.5 billion to over 776 enterprises, which no doubt, generated over 400,000 direct and indirect jobs in the country. This is, as the bank has also braced-up to its increasing responsibilities, especially in the implementation of the Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan, NIPR, as well as the National Enterprise Development Programme, NEDEP. Confirming this feat recently in Lagos state, the Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Bank, Mr Waheed Olagunju said the most striking achievement in its credit operations, was the disbursement of loans, amounting to N5.7 billion to the MSMEs. According to him, this represented 205 percent increase over the average annual run rate of N1.7 billion to MSMEs in previous years. He however noted that the increase in the disbursement of loans to the MSMEs was due to the establishment of separate directorate for small and medium enterprises as well as other steps taken to create an efficient ecosystem for the SMEs in the country. This is in addition to other sector-specific products created by the bank like the N5 billion cottage agro processing fund for agro-allied based SMEs. The products, which target over 1, 000 cottage mills across the country, has about 20-30 mills per state, including the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja. More to this, was the BOI Nollyfund, a collateral- free fund of N1 billion for the entertainment industry practitioners, which targets the film production chain. Also, the N1 billion fashion fund launched by the bank was aimed at supporting the fashion value chain, including but not limited to garments, women shoes, handbags and jewellery accessories. However, the bank in its bid to enhance its lending capacity, obtained a $100 million line of credit from the African Development Bank, AfDB, to specifically fund export-based projects, which is in line with the AfDB’s economic initiatives. Olagunju also noted that a N10 billion youth entrepreneurship support programme was also launched by the bank to equip young people with the skills and knowledge to be selfemployed as well as managing their own businesses. The beneficiaries of these initiatives, he said, would be trained under the bank’s entrepreneurship capacity building programme while providing them with fund to start up while expanding existing businesses based on concessional lending terms and conditions. The military and Niger Delta militants yesterday agreed to a ceasefire deal to stop hostilities in the region. This means all the groups will henceforth stop bombing of oil pipelines. The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) had carried out attacks on oil pipelines resulting in drop in nation’s revenues. This is even as the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) agreed to back the Chief Edwin Clark-led negotiating team to resolve the regions crisis. It also claimed it had secured some concessions from Federal Government which the military denied yesterday. Last week, the militant groups approached Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka to represent them in the negotiation. MEND has accepted to work with Clark team while disbanding the Odein Ajumogbobia-led negotiating Aaron Team 2. Confirming the concession, MEND said in a statement issued by the group’s spokesman, Jomo Gbomo that the Federal Government has made some concessions to the group. “In fact, we have so far been able to secure a number or concessions, some of which include, but are not limited to the release of political prisoners. We expect that Chief Clark and his team shall follow through with the rest of the dialogue and peace process,” MEND said. The disbandment of the Ajumogbobia team followed the decision of MEND to accede to the request of other militant groups led by ND that the foremost Ijaw leader, Chief Clark should lead discussions on behalf of the Niger Delta region. MEND which had initially rejected the request, but succumbed to pressure and dispatched its representative, Timipa Jenkins Okpomipere to meet with Clark and had positions harmonised for a united front to negotiate with the Federal Government. Gbomo, in the eight-paragraph statement, also disclosed that following the disbandment of the team, its Operation Moses, supposed to involve a tour of Niger Delta states to sensitise the people on the need for peace will not hold. The MEND’s spokesman, who thanked the team for honouring its invitation stated that the group has nominated Ogoni civil rights activist, Mr Ledum Mitee, Mr Ibanga Isine and Okponipere to join Clark in articulating the position of Niger Deltans. MEND also disclosed that it would be monitoring proceedings on the talks, adding that it reserves the right to pull out its representatives after six months if it is not satisfied with the progress of the talks. The group also warned the members of the Bayelsa State Waterways Security Task force and those it called their military collaborators to respect the on-going ceasefire. It cautioned one of its former leaders, General Africanus Ukparasia not to venture anywhere near its camp as its commanders have been told to treat him as an enemy. Nevertheless, MEND is compelled to categorically warn that it is not yet uhuru. Clark-led new initiative should realise that MEND was already in preliminary talks with the Federal Government as confirmed by President Muhammadu Buhari. All efforts to reach General Africanus on phone were futile. He has also not replied the text message sent to his phone. But one of aides who doesn’t want to be named said the Waterways Security Task Force would not be deterred in its efforts to rid Bayelsa and by extension the Niger Delta region of criminals masquerading as freedom fighters. According to him, MEND has ceased from existence since 2008 when the commanders embraced the Federal Government amnesty, noting that those claiming to be members of MEND are impostors. Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom State Government yesterday disagreed with the Federal Government over the actual status of protesting ex-agitators from the state who alleged alienation from the Presidential Amnesty Programme. Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, appealed to the Amnesty Office to treat the ex-agitators from the state fairly, saying that they were duly captured in the programme like their counterparts from the other parts of Niger Delta. Umanah spoke on the heels of a statement credited to the Coordinator of the Amnesty Office and Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Brig. Gen. Paul Boroh (retd), urging the state government to engage and empower some ex-agitators from the state who may not have been captured in the programme. Meanwhile, a public affairs analyst and former commissioner with the Delta State Oil Producing Communities Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Sir Ken Okolugbo, has praised the decision of leaders and activists in the Niger Delta to line up behind the Clark team. In denying the purported concession yesterday, a top military source who does not want to be mentioned in print, however told Daily Sun, that even though the government initiated the dialogue with the militants, to find a lasting solution to the incessant combing of oil pipelines, it was yet to make any specific decision. The source described the claim that government had agreed to release some perceived political prisoners from the region as lies. The source said those spreading the rumour are only doing so to divert security operations and the ongoing military raid to flush out militants from the region which has been intensified. According to the source, “the government cannot just release political prisoners from the region who are in jail for heinous offences, this is because the government just want to be careful and not take chances.” Source : http://ijebuloaded.com/news-niger-delta-militants-agree-stop-bombing-oil-pipelines/

All past civilian governors of Osun State were on Saturday absent at a ceremony organised to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the creation of the state. The state’s first civilian governor, Senator Isiaka Adeleke; Chief Bisi Akande and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola were absent but two past military administrators, Col. Theophilus Bamgboye (retd.) and Navy Capt. Anthony Udofia (retd.) were at the event. Although the past governors were not present at the callisthenic display by 4000 pupils drawn from 17 schools, the event was colourful as the pupils treated those in attendance to breathtaking displays. Bamgboye commended Governor Rauf Aregbesola for embarking on developmental projects in the state. He said, “I can see that Osun State is working and there are developments. I have never witnessed a colourful ceremony like this (the callisthenics).” The Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, who also spoke at the ceremony, urged Aregbesola to work towards reducing hunger and poverty in the land. The monarch commended the governor for doing well but advised him to do more so that the people, including traditional rulers, would be taken out of poverty. But the Peoples Democratic Party in the state said Aregbesola had brought untold hardship on the people of the state with his style of governance. The factional chairman of the PDP, Soji Adagunodo, claimed that the All Progressives Congress-led government had impoverished the state. He said, “Aregbesola should point to a project that he has done and commissioned. We are advising him not to point to the mega schools because they were done during the PDP-led Federal Government and it was funded by the State Universal Basic Education Board.” |
Abdulmumin Jibrin, the Kano lawmaker at the centre of the unfolding budget padding scandal, on Saturday said he was also a beneficiary of a questionable office maintenance allowance for members of the House of Representatives. Mr. Jibrin’s confession came a day after he accused 10 principal officers of sharing more than N10 billion in fraudulent proceeds. The 10 principal officers who allegedly received billions of naira in running cost allowance include the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, who allegedly got the largest share of N1.5 billion, Mr. Jibrin said. Others on the list are Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun, N800 million; Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, N1.2 billion; his deputy, Buba Jibril, N1.2 billion; House Whip, Alhassan Doguwa, N1.2 billion; and his deputy, Pally Iriase, N700 million. The rest are Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, N1.2 billion, his deputy, Chukwuka Onyema: N800 million, Minority Whip, Yakubu Barde, N700 million and his deputy, Binta Bello, N700 million. Mr. Jibrin, however, said he regretted taking the loot, adding that he would explain how he used his ill-gotten N650 million. “I have records and account of how I spent every penny that I have taken. In fact, it has been published in a 150-page book,” Mr. Jibrin said. “However, I have never been comfortable with the money! Thank God the wasteful allowances regime has reached its Waterloo! The country and House will be better off!” Today’s revelation marks the first time Mr. Jibrin would deliberately implicate himself since he began driving the scandal five weeks ago. http://ijebuloaded.com/news-ex-appropriation-chair-jibrin-confesses-says-received-n650-million-illegal-allowances/

If someone like Aldi can bounce back from addiction, so can you. Friends and family are a great support system, but ultimately you’re in control of your own destiny. Don’t just give in to smoking or poor health — do some reading, talk to your doctor, and make healthy changes in your life.

As one of the youngest smokers ever seen, Aldi was on a bad path. His family tried to steer him in the right direction, but there was more trouble heading his way. The good news: Aldi was able to cut down on his cigarette habit. His parents were able to wean him off of smoking by reducing the number of cigarettes he smoked every day Unfortunately, Aldi traded one addiction for another. As is common with addictive personalities, the absence of smoking created a void in Aldi’s life. Aldi filled the void by eating. By the age of five, he’d mostly kicked his nicotine habit. But in its place was a different dangerous addiction: Junk food. He ballooned to 56 pounds on a diet of sweets and condensed milk. His family had trouble dealing with his new addiction. “He eats a lot,” his mom told The Sun, “With so many people in the house it’s hard to stop him getting food.” The first few years of Aldi’s life were extremely unhealthy. But one thing he had going for him was his young age — if he could turn things around, he could look forward to a long life. With some willpower and the support of his family, Aldi is finally on the right track. He’s eating a much more balanced diet now, and the results show. He also has managed to stay away from cigarettes. It’s been six years since Aldi first made international headlines. In that time, the youngster has dealt with devastating addictions to both smoking and eating. But at the age of eight, things are looking up. If someone like Aldi can bounce back from addiction, so can you. Friends and family are a great support system, but ultimately you’re in control of your own destiny. Don’t just give in to smoking or poor health — do some reading, talk to your doctor, and make healthy changes in your life. ??

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrH8cveb8Rk Aldi Rizal achieved international fame when he was just two years old. But the Indonesian toddler owed his celebrity status not to acting, singing or dancing, but to chain-smoking. That’s right: At the tender age of two, young Aldi was smoking a whopping 40 cigarettes a day. That was six years ago, so let’s check in with Aldi, who’s now eight. Do you know any smokers or former smokers? Why not SHARE this story with them? The chain-smoking toddler attracted international headlines when the story first broke. The world looked on with a mixture of revulsion, outrage, horror and morbid curiosity at a boy barely old enough to walk and talk, who nonetheless pounded back dozens of cigarettes each and every day. The Lagos State Police Command yesterday, uncovered eleven buildings in Ilasamaja area of Lagos, with one of them popularly called PDP house which were used for illlegal bunkering activities. The police equally arrested four persons allegedly involved in the bunkering. The buildings located on Ibadan and Abeokuta streets, had underground pipes which pump petroleum products suspected to be diesel into wells. Thereafter, the products are loaded into trucks, drums and jerricans at night. Vanguard gathered that activities of these suspects had been going on for over five years until policemen from Ilasamaja division led by the Divisional Police Officer, Titilayo Oriyomi Oluwasanmi, a woman Superintendent of Police, SP swooped on them at the early hours of yesterday. During the routine patrol around Abeokuta street, it was gathered that some buyers who came with jerricans and drums ran into a building on 10 Abeokuta street and locked the door from behind, on sighting the police van. The DPO was said to have gone back to the division, changed into mufti and returned to the street, with a jerrican and went straight to the building ,while her men positioned at strategic points . Apparently thinking she was one of the buyers, the door of the storey building on 10 Abeokuta street was flung open, only for the occupants to discover that the purported buyer was a cop. She was said to have combed the building to ascertain what they were doing, only to discover a brick on top of the well. She ordered her men to remove the brick, where it was discovered to the amazement of all that they were siphoning petroleum product from the well. Preliminary investigation revealed that owner of the building , Mrs Moji Adesina, had ejected all her tenants, in order to avoid being implicated. It was discovered that a pumping machine was mounted inside the well, from where the product is pumped into trucks which were usually stationed outside. Some jerricans and drums yet to be filled , were recovered close to the well. Checks carried on nine other buildings reveled that similar illegalities were going on there. It further discovered that under ground pipe was connected to some buildings on the next street (Ibadan street). One of the buildings comprising 17 rooms on number 11 Ibadan street, popularly known as PDP house, had stickers of the Peoples Democratic Party on them. Other buildings on same street where similar discoveries were made included numbers 7, 9, and 13. The eleventh discovery was made at about 1.35pm, while the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, who visited the scene made an attempt to check the well of a building on number 5 Ibadan street. Owoseni who was accompanied by the Commander Rapid Response Squad, Olatunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, therefore , advised residents of the affected streets to relocate , in order to safeguard their lives in the event of likely fire outbreak. Also on ground was the Area Commander ‘D’ Mr Salisu Gyadigyadi , an Assistant Commissioner of Police. Addressing the residents in Yoruba dialect, Owoseni said : “You can not tell us that you are not aware of these illegalities in your vicinity. Nevertheless, for your safety, it is better to relocate because with this discovery, perpetrators of this act may decide to set fire on the wells in order to jeopardize investigation. And when that happens, your lives will be endangered. Consider your lives and those of your children”. Investigation by Saturday Vanguard revealed that about five landlords allegedly started the illegal bunkering and introduced others. It was reliably gathered that over 50 buildings had oil wells around the area. Some of the wells were painted with sky blue colour to indicate their owners. Some were even connected to uncompleted buildings. However when approached, occupants of the buildings claimed ignorance of the on-goings. However, one of them who spoke with Saturday Vanguard on condition of anonymity, stated that, “We packed into this building ( 11 Ibadan street) four months ago. The first thing we noticed was that the well was locked. When we asked why, other tenants said the landlord locked it because kerosene was mixed with it. But every night, we notice movements where the well is sited. When my husband came to find out what the movement was all about, he noticed that the people were holding jerricans and drums. We sensed that something was amiss but could not place our hand on what it was. We concluded to pack out when the rent expires before this happened ”. Another resident, who simply gave his name as Ukachukwu maintained that, “all the tenants in the buildings know that there is oil in the wells but they are afraid to report to the concerned agency out of fear. Some of them who have stayed long are also into it. NNPC should also be investigated because at times, it will come as petrol and at other times, it will be diesel, the question is how is this possible without connivance with an insider in NNPC”? The residents however reacted to advice for them to relocate, begging to be given some time to gather money with which to pay house rent. However, houses where the discoveries were made were locked up by officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC . General manager, Lagos State Emagency Management Agency, LASEMA Mr Michael Akindele who visited the area said that his agency was working out on strategy to prevent calamity that could lead to loss of lives and property, even as he advised the residents to seek alternative shelter. Chairman of the Ilasamaja Community Development Area, Alhaji Abdulfatai Abusiga, who expressed shock over the discovery claimed that he was never aware of such illegalities until yesterday. Also lending voice to the suggestion that residents vacate the area, the Sole Administrator of Isolo Local Council Development Area, Miss Abimbola Osukoya, said that the council would ensure that the directive was adhered to. Four suspects; two of them landlords and the rest tenants were arrested , with the recovery of four drums and several jerricans. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police said that the suspects would be interrogated with a view to arresting the end users. Firstly In Olamide's voice " Freedom of speech dey i no go dull you But freedom after speech i cant assure you" Former President Jonathan Denies Sponsoring Niger Delta Avengers Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed as malicious a statement linking him to the militant group, Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), which has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on oil facilities as well as employees of oil companies in the Niger Delta. A splinter group, Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA), which recently split from the NDA, had issued a statement earlier today alleging that former President Jonathan was the “grand patron” of the violent group, NDA. Speaking briefly to our correspondent from Zambia, where he is scheduled to monitor elections next week, Mr. Jonathan dismissed the list released by Cynthia Whyte, an alias for the spokesman of RNDA. Former President Jonathan said he would soon issue a formal statement, but clarified that he was in no way tied to the NDA. Asked if President Muhammadu Buhari had invited him to help broker peace in the oil-producing zone, Mr. Jonathan said he had received no formal request from his successor. However, he said he was aware that Ijaw elder, Edwin Clark, was working informally to help restore stability in the area. Former President Jonathan said he did not wish to trade words with “Cynthia Whyte.” He stated that the names of those listed as alleged sponsors and supporters of NDA suggested that a political agenda informed the composition of the list. He asserted that there was absolutely no truth to the allegation that he was backing the NDA or any other militant group in the Niger Delta or anywhere else. Source : http://saharareporters.com/2016/08/06/former-president-jonathan-denies-sponsoring-niger-delta-avengers Flash Back Jan 24 2015 Niger Delta militants meet in Yenagoa, threaten war should Jonathan lose presidential election Prominent Niger Delta militants have vowed to ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan wins the February 14 presidential election. Mr. Jonathan is of the Ijaw ethnic stock, and the only member of a minority tribe from the South to have ever governed Nigeria. The former militants, who said any attempt to dethrone the President would be seen as a direct attack on the Ijaw nation, threatened to unleash violence on the country and take back Niger Delta oil should Mr. Jonathan lose re-election. According to them the President’s victory in the election is not negotiable. The former militant leaders took the position Friday in Government House, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, at an enlarged meeting that was attended by all the former militant leaders and their followers across the Niger Delta region. Among those in attendance were Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, leader, Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force; Victor Ben Ebikabowei, aka, Boy Loaf; and Government Ekpudomenowei, aka, Tompolo. Also in attendance were the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, and chairman of Amnesty Implementation Committee, Kingsley Kuku; Bayelsa state Governor, Seriake Dickson and his deputy; President General of Ijaw Youth Council, Udengs Eradiri; among others. Addressing the meeting, Dokubo-Asari deplored the alleged intimidation being meted to the people of Ijaw stock in Nigeria, saying the people cannot take it any longer. ”For every Goliath, God created a David. For every Pharoah, there is a Moses. “We are going to war. Everyone of you should go and fortify yourself,’’ he said. He advised those at the meeting to be ready for the battle ahead and declared that Mr. Jonathan would win reelection. Mr. Dokubo-Asari, who condemned the attack on Jonathan in the north in the ongoing presidential campaigns, maintained that the survival of the Ijaw nation rests in the hands of the militants gathered at the meeting. On his part, Boyloaf condemned the attack on President Jonathan in the north, saying nobody has the monopoly of violence. He said there is nothing like one Nigeria, pointing out that oil is the only thing binding Nigeria’s diverse nationalities together. While maintaining that President Jonathan would win the election, he however said if the north takes the power away from Mr. Jonathan, the people of the Niger Delta region would take their oil back. He stressed the need for oneness of purpose among the people, urging them to keep their grudges aside and face the present challenges facing the Ijaw nation with solidarity. ”Keep grudges and sentiments apart. We are ready to match them bumper to bumper,” Boyloaf said. In his remark, Governor Dickson thanked the former militant leaders for their resolve to back the re-election of President Jonathan with greater vigour and assured them that he would relate their position to the President. He urged them to resist the temptation of being recruited by the opposition to destabilize the state. The governor also charged them to shun propaganda and blackmail. EPISODE 1 “Dad, can you tell me how to get rich?” My dad put down the evening paper. “Why do you want to get rich, Son?” “Because today Jimmy’s mom drove up in their new Cadillac, and they were going to their beach house for the weekend. He took three of his friends, but Mike and I weren’t invited. They told us we weren’t invited because we were poor kids.” “They did?” my dad asked incredulously. “Yeah, they did,” I replied in a hurt tone. My dad silently shook his head, pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, and went back to reading the paper. I stood waiting for an answer. The year was 1956. I was nine years old. By some twist of fate, I attended the same public school where the rich people sent their kids. We were primarily a sugar-plantation town. The managers of the plantation and the other affluent people, such as doctors, business owners, and bankers, sent their children to this elementary school. After grade six, their children were generally sent off to private schools. Because my family lived on one side of the street, I went to this school. Had I lived on the other side of the street, I would have gone to a different school with kids from families more like mine. After grade six, these kids and I would go on to the public intermediate and high school. There was no private school for them or for me. I had two fathers, a rich one and a poor one. One was highly educated and intelligent. He had a Ph.D. and completed four years of undergraduate work in less than two years. He then went on to Stanford University, the University of Chicago, and Northwestern University to do his advanced studies, all on full financial scholarships. The other father never finished the eighth grade. Both men were successful in their careers, working hard all their lives. Both earned substantial incomes. Yet one always struggled financially. The other would become one of the richest men in Hawaii. One died leaving tens of millions of dollars to his family, charities, and his church. The other left bills to be paid. Both men were strong, charismatic, and influential. Both men offered me advice, but they did not advise the same things. Both men believed strongly in education but did not recommend the same course of study. If I had had only one dad, I would have had to accept or reject his advice. Having two dads offered me the choice of contrasting points of view: one of a rich man and one of a poor man. Instead of simply accepting or rejecting one or the other, I found myself thinking more, comparing, and then choosing for myself. The problem was that the rich man was not rich yet, and the poor man was not yet poor. Both were just starting out on their careers, and both were struggling with money and families. But they had very different points of view about money. For example, one dad would say, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” The other said, “The lack of money is the root of all evil.” As a young boy, having two strong fathers both influencing me was difficult. I wanted to be a good son and listen, but the two fathers did not say the same things. The contrast in their points of view, particularly about money, was so extreme that I grew curious and intrigued. I began to start thinking for long periods of time about what each was saying. Much of my private time was spent reflecting, asking myself questions such as, “Why does he say that?” and then asking the same question of the other dad’s statement. It would have been much easier to simply say, “Yeah, he’s right. I agree with that.” Or to simply reject the point of view by saying, “The old man doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” Instead, having two dads whom I loved forced me to think and ultimately choose a way of thinking for myself. As a process, choosing for myself turned out to be much more valuable in the long run than simply accepting or rejecting a single point of view. One of the reasons the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the middle class struggles in debt is that the subject of money is taught at home, not in school. Most of us learn about money from our parents. So what can poor parents tell their child about money? They simply say, “Stay in school and study hard.” The child may graduate with excellent grades, but with a poor person’s financial programming and mindset. Sadly, money is not taught in schools. Schools focus on scholastic and professional skills, but not on financial skills. This explains how smart bankers, doctors, and accountants who earned excellent grades may struggle financially all of their lives. Our staggering national debt is due in large part to highly educated politicians and government officials making financial decisions with little or no training in the subject of money Today I often wonder what will soon happen when we have millions of people who need financial and medical assistance. They will be dependent upon their families or the government for financial support. What will happen when Medicare and Social Security run out of money? How will a nation survive if teaching children about money continues to be left to parents—most of whom will be, or already are, poor? Because I had two influential fathers, I learned from both of them. I had to think about each dad’s advice, and in doing so, I gained valuable insight into the power and effect of one’s thoughts on one’s life. For example, one dad had a habit of saying, “I can’t afford it.” The other dad forbade those words to be used. He insisted I ask, “How can I afford it?” One is a statement, and the other is a question. One lets you off the hook, and the other forces you to think. My soon-to-be-rich dad would explain that by automatically saying the words “I can’t afford it,” your brain stops working. By asking the question “How can I afford it?” your brain is put to work. He did not mean that you should buy everything you want. He was fanatical about exercising your mind, the most powerful computer in the world. He’d say, “My brain gets stronger every day because I exercise it. The stronger it gets, the more money I can make.” He believed that automatically saying “I can’t afford it” was a sign of mental laziness. Although both dads worked hard, I noticed that one dad had a habit of putting his brain to sleep when it came to finances, and the other had a habit of exercising his brain. The long-term result was that one dad grew stronger financially, and the other grew weaker. It is not much different from a person who goes to the gym to exercise on a regular basis versus someone who sits on the couch watching television. Proper physical exercise increases your chances for health, and proper mental exercise increases your chances for wealth. My two dads had opposing attitudes and that affected the way they thought. One dad thought that the rich should pay more in taxes to take care of those less fortunate. The other said, “Taxes punish those who produce and reward those who don’t produce.” One dad recommended, “Study hard so you can find a good company to work for.” The other recommended, “Study hard so you can find a good company to buy.” One dad said, “The reason I’m not rich is because I have you kids.” The other said, “The reason I must be rich is because I have you kids.” One encouraged talking about money and business at the dinner table, while the other forbade the subject of money to be discussed over a meal. One said, “When it comes to money, play it safe. Don’t take risks.” The other said, “Learn to manage risk.” One believed, “Our home is our largest investment and our greatest asset.” The other believed, “My house is a liability, and if your house is your largest investment, you’re in trouble.” Both dads paid their bills on time, yet one paid his bills first while the other paid his bills last. One dad believed in a company or the government taking care of you and your needs. He was always concerned about pay raises, retirement plans, medical benefits, sick leave, vacation days, and other perks. He was impressed with two of his uncles who joined the military and earned a retirement-and-entitlement package for life after twenty years of active service. He loved the idea of medical benefits and PX privileges the military provided its retirees. He also loved the tenure system available through the university. The idea of job protection for life and job benefits seemed more important, at times, than the job. He would often say, “I’ve worked hard for the government, and I’m entitled to these benefits.” The other believed in total financial self-reliance. He spoke out against the entitlement mentality and how it created weak and financially needy people. He was emphatic about being financially competent. One dad struggled to save a few dollars. The other created investments. One dad taught me how to write an impressive resumé so I could find a good job. The other taught me how to write strong business and financial plans so I could create jobs. Being a product of two strong dads allowed me the luxury of observing the effects different thoughts have on one’s life. I noticed that people really do shape their lives through their thoughts. For example, my poor dad always said, “I’ll never be rich.” And that prophecy became reality. My rich dad, on the other hand, always referred to himself as rich. He would say things like, “I’m a rich man, and rich people don’t do this.” Even when he was flat broke after a major financial setback, he continued to refer to himself as a rich man. He would cover himself by saying, “There is a difference between being poor and being broke. Broke is temporary. Poor is eternal.” My poor dad would say,............................
