PoliticsJustice Ofili-ajumogobia Fail To Show Properties She Claimed Her Mother Gave Her by ijebuloaded(op): 6:20am On Nov 10, 2016
Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia took agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a wild goose chase as she traveled with them from Lagos to Benin and Asaba in search of properties she claimed her late mother bequeathed to her. However, the search was futile as the judge was unable to show agents the said properties she allegedly inherited from her mother.

rita-ofili-ajumogobia

An EFCC source told SaharaReporters that a bus carrying Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia and a team of anti-corruption agents first arrived in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, because the judge had claimed that some of the $900k she wired abroad from bank accounts in Nigeria was income from properties she ostensibly inherited. She had told EFCC agents that her brother, Donald Ofili, and a lawyer based in Asaba, the Delta State capital, were managing the said properties. However, agents who traveled to Benin City to verify the existence of the houses claimed by the embattled judge as the source of some of her income did not find a single property.

Our source said that the judge, who sat in the back of the bus, often covered herself with a wrapper and muttered into a hand-held device as they drove her to Benin City. According to the source, EFCC agents let the judge be, but occasionally asked her to let them talk to her brother, Mr. Donald Ofili. However, on their arrival in Benin, the judge’s brother reportedly spoke on the phone to EFCC agents, asserting that their mother owned homes in the city, but confessing that his sister had asked him to claim that the $120k he wired into her account came from rental fees. The operatives said that, on discovering that her brother had blown open her game, Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia changed tunes and claimed that a lawyer not known to her brother managed the properties. She also told stunned agents that she could not recollect the addresses of the properties. When agents reminded her that her brother also claimed not to know the addresses of the properties, the judge urged the agents to proceed to Asaba, claiming she would then have enough time to contact the mysterious Benin lawyer.

Upset by the judge’s evasive manner, EFCC agents demanded to speak with the lawyer in advance as they drove to Asaba. Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia reportedly rang the so-called lawyer and handed her phone over to an EFCC agent. The man then promised the EFCC agents that he would be waiting to receive them in Asaba, adding that he was visiting a community outside Asaba.
However, once the EFCC agents arrived in Asaba, the judge told them that the lawyer who reportedly managed her properties had traveled to Owerri. Furious, members of the EFCC team demanded to speak again with the lawyer, but his line had been switched off. They demanded that the judge take them to the properties, but she again said she did not know the address. The irate EFCC operatives spent the night in Asaba, but seized the judge’s phone to ensure she would not use it to plot against them. As they disembarked from the bus, the agents discovered that the judge had another phone hidden in her wrapper, which they also took away.

Our source said that, despite taking away the second phone, they discovered the judge continued to mutter under her wrapper during the journey back to Lagos. Once in Lagos, a female EFCC detective searched the judge and discovered that she had hidden up to five phones underneath her clothing. She had also concealed an iPad.

According to our EFCC source, an initial check of the phones showed that the embattled justice was using different phones to communicate with her suspected accomplices perhaps tutoring them to lie to investigators about the source of her inexplicable cash transactions. The source said the phones retrieved from the judge would also be sent to experts for forensic checks.

A senior EFCC source confirmed the drama with Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia, adding that the agency was considering revoking the judge’s administrative bail, accusing her of making moves to undermine their investigative tasks.

CrimeMilitants Laying Down Arms, Says Military by ijebuloaded(op): 6:14am On Nov 10, 2016
Kills three notorious sea robbers
• Navy arrests vessel with overloaded tonnes of diesel
The military yesterday said some militants and criminals in the Niger Delta region were now surrendering their arms and ready to embrace amnesty.

In an interview with journalists in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the coordinator of the Joint Media Campaign Centre (JMCC), Lt. Col. Olaolu Dauda said information from Sector 4 in Cross River State indicated that Bakassi Strike Force (BSF) militants led by Benjamin Ene had expressed their willingness to lay down their arms.

This came as troops of the outfit on Tuesday confirmed the killing of two notorious sea pirates and a militant leader in Lobia community of Southern Ijaw local council of Bayelsa.

A statement by the coordinator of the JMCC said the troops attached to Sector 2 Command in the state killed the suspected sea pirates and the militant identified as Edo Boy during separate operations in the area.

Dauda further disclosed that the militants who had stated their readiness to surrender their arms had contacted the Department of State Services (DSS) in Cross River State to discuss the terms for amnesty with the relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Navy (NN) has apprehended a vessel overloaded with 600 metric tonnes (MT) of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) commonly called diesel.

The apprehended ship, MT Sea Eunice would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for investigation. In a statement yesterday in Abuja, the Director, Navy Information (DINFO) Christian Ezekobe said: “The operatives of the Navy deployed by NNS Pathfinder have arrested MT Sea Eunice for alleged involvement in illegal oil bunkering activities.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that while the vessel was supposed to load 400 metric tonnes of AGO, it was discovered that it had about 1,000 MT onboard even as the final process for loading approval was not completed. The vessel would be handed over to the relevant prosecuting agency for further action.”

CrimeSoldier, 13 Terrorists Killed As Army, Air Force Repel Attack In Borno by ijebuloaded(op): 6:08am On Nov 09, 2016
Another Nigerian soldier was, yesterday, killed, three others wounded with no fewer than 13 Boko Haram terrorists decimated when the insurgents attacked the troops’ location in Northern Borno town of Kangarwa. The fighting, which lasted for hours, was said to have been so intense that the Army had to request air support from the Nigerian Air Force, resulting in the deployment of a fighter jet and a surveillance aircraft with which the terrorists were subdued. It was learned that many of the terrorists escaped with bullet wounds from the ground and air assault. Confirming the confrontation in Abuja, Army spokesman, Col Sani Usman, said: “Troops of 119 Task Force Battalion, 8 Division Nigerian Army, deployed at Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, yesterday, neutralised 13 Boko Haram terrorists in a counter-attack carried out by the troops. “Unfortunately, one soldier paid the supreme price during the encounter, while three others were wounded in action. “The offensive, which began at 4p.m., lasted for roughly four hours, necessitating the troops calling for air support.”

The Senate has began the probe of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi over the concession of western (Lagos-Kano) and Eastern (Port Harcourt – Maiduguri) rail lines to General Electric company, based in the United States (US).

oyegun-amaechi

This follows the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Albert Akpan (PDP, Akwa-Ibom Northeast) on the concession of rail lines with a potential of $2billion.

Akpan told the Senate that the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), and the Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (NAIF) upon the approval of the National Council on Privatization (NPC) in April 2015, developed a roadmap for the concessioning of the rail lines.

He said the BPE had already engaged the Global Infrastructure Facility (GIF) and the World Bank in discussions on accessing funding for transactions Advisers, while the Ministry of Transport had formally appointed Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and Greenwich as financial Advisers for the same purpose.

He said in August, this year, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo inaugurated the steering and Technical committee in line with the provision of section 11(k) of the Public Enterprises (Privatisation and Commercialisation) Act 1999 to fast track the process of the concession of the rail lines.

“It is the responsibility of the steering and technical committees of the NPC inaugurated by the Vice president in August 2016 to negotiate with potential bidders for this concession, how then did the Ministry of Transport engage General Electric Company as far back as June, 2016,” he said.

He said the Ministry of Transport had violated the provisions of the Public Enterprises (Privatization and Commercialization) Act, 1999 by unilaterally engaging the General Electric (GE) for the concession.

The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, mandated the Senate Committees on Privatization, Land Transport, Finance, Special Duties, Trade and Investment, Judiciary and Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes to investigate the procedure adopted in the engagement of General Electric for the concession.

EFCC has also stopped all suspects and inmates from making phone calls to their lawyers, family members and loved ones.

Sources told our correspondent on Saturday that the development may not be unconnected to number of solidarity visits to many of the politicians in custody, including Bala Mohammed and Femi Fani-Kayode.

We are Reliably informed that the EFCC management issued the order in a circular from the office of Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu.

CrimeBREAKING: Boko Haram Kills Col. Ali, Leader Of The Operation That Recaptured Bag by ijebuloaded(op): 1:11pm On Nov 05, 2016
Muhammad Abu Ali, a lieutenant colonel, whom Boko Haram dreaded, is dead.

Ali led one of the army’s fiercest-ever battles with Boko Haram, in February 2015, culminating in the recapture of Baga town in Borno state.

Sani Usman, army spokeman, said he was killed in an encounter with the insurgents on Friday.

The deceased was was granted accelerated promotion from rank of major to lieutenant-colonel in September 2015, for his courageous performance in a series of the army’s engagements with Boko Haram.

‎Usman added that four soldiers were killed, but that troops killed 14 of the insurgents who attacked a location of the army in Borno state.

“Yesterday at about 10.00pm suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked a 119 Battalion Nigerian army location at Mallam Fatori, northern Borno state. The troops fought gallantly and repelled the attack, killing 14 Boko Haram terrorists,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we lost an officer and four soldiers, while four other soldiers sustained various degrees of injuries during the encounter. One of those killed in action, was Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Abu Ali, the Commanding Officer of 272 Task Force Tank Battalion.”

During investigative trip to the theatre of war, soldiers, majority of whom have built an unwanted reputation for always criticising the army hierarchy, spoke highly of Ali’s professionalism.

One of the soldiers, who partook in the Baga operation, narrated his experience.

“In the case Baga, when it was recaptured from Boko Haram, Abu Ali, who led that operation, told the boko-haram-the sparknge soldiers that they should not worry, that they should only do five percent of the job, that he was going to do 95% of the job with the tanks,” he had said.

“And that was exactly what happened. He did most of the work with the tanks. He was a major at that time and his promotion after the operation was automatic because he performed very well. One smallish guy like that o.”

A former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, his lawyer confirmed on Friday.

Mr. Obanikoro’s associate, Demola Olarewaju, also confirmed the development , saying “he has been released and now resting in Abuja”.

The Punch newspaper reported that Mr. Obanikoro was released at about 5p.m. Friday. He immediately left for his residence, the paper said.

Mr. Obanikoro was detained on October 17 after returning from the United States to submit himself to the EFCC on fraud allegations.

EFCC sources said Mr. Obanikoro paid N100 million to the commission out of the over N800 million of public funds he was accused of spending.

The source said the former minister’s passports were confiscated.

But his lawyer, Mr. Onoja says that the passports would be returned to his client anytime he requests for them.

“Well, we have presented all the guarantors and perfected his bail conditions, so the passports seizure shouldn’t be a big deal,” Mr. Onoja said. “If he intends to travel, he will apply for it and they will return them back to him.”

Mr. Obanikoro was joined in the custody by other officials of the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, is still being detained at the headquarters of the anti-graft office, as well as former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, and a former FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed.

They face various allegations of financial wrongdoing.

The Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of witch-hunting pro-Biafra agitators ****

MASSOB made the accusation while reacting to Buhari’s recent pronouncement that, “anybody who wants to leave Nigeria is free.”
Buhari had made the declaration while meeting Niger Delta leaders and Stakeholders on how to resolve the crises in the oil rich region.

In a statement by its leader, Uchenna Madu, said, “The Federal Government is busy, chasing, witch-hunting and killing Biafrans and agitators, while the country is collapsing, ****

“We reiterate our earlier position that those who wish to play pharaoh against the people of Biafra, will certainly experience the consequences of the Egyptian Pharaoh.

“President Buhari’s statement that anyone, who cherished another country can leave Nigeria is not something to be cheerful about, celebrated and in any way heartwarming. MASSOB views it as part of Pharaoh’s subtle way of mocking the Hebrews-Biafra.

“The people of Biafra should not celebrate or rejoice over that cunning and mocking assertion. ****

“MASSOB and other pro-Biafran groups will continue to remain non-violent and focused

“We will continue to be loyal to Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu’s principles, vision and legacies; and continue to revive and refresh the consciousness of Ojukwuism in the minds of every Biafran.”

After signing a peace pact with members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Governor Ayodele Fayose on Thursday released nine cows arrested for contravening the state’s anti-grazing law to the group.

Ayodele-Fayose

Fayose, however, stated that he released the cows to cement the relationship between the government , farmers and the Fulani herdsmen in the state, warning that the 7am till 6pm grazing period stipulated in the law stands and that anyone who contravenes it will be dealt
with.

The Miyetti Allah at the meeting signed a peace pact with the government, promising to co-exist peacefully with the farmers and residents of the state .

The cows were seized a couple of weeks ago by the recently inaugurated Ekiti State Grazing Enforcement Marshals for contravening the
anti-grazing law.

CrimeGEJ Told Metuh How To Share N400m –witness by ijebuloaded(op): 4:22pm On Nov 03, 2016
A witness, Mr. Richard Ihediwa, in the ongoing trial of former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisah Metuh, said on Thursday that the N400m Metuh got was disbursed as directed by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Ihediwa, led in evidence by the counsel to Metuh, Mr. Emeka Etiaba (SAN), told the Abuja High Court that Jonathan gave the directive on how the amount was to be spent.

He said that N21m was paid to former PDP Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, for a property acquired for use by the party as its media intervention centre.

He added that although the property, located in Asokoro area of Abuja, did not belong to Anenih, he assisted the PDP media team headed by the accused in securing it.

He said, “The amount covered the cost of hiring the structure, utility vehicles as well as security gadgets at the centre.”

The witness also told the court that various sums were paid to some groups coordinated by some government functionaries, including the late Oronto Douglas and Abbah Dabo.

He said he was not very certain about the amount released to late Douglas, but added that N25m was released to Dabo as mobilisation fee for advocacy groups, in line with the directive.

Ihediwa said the former president also approved different amounts for some other groups and Metuh disbursed the funds to them accordingly.

He said because of the tension and high level of insecurity across the six geo-political regions of the country then, there was the need for government to mobilise various advocacy groups to stabilise the system.

Meanwhile, Justice Okon Abang has reserved ruling for November 15 on applications filed by the defence counsel.

PoliticsSoyinka: If Trump Wins, I’ll Destroy My American Green Card by ijebuloaded(op): 4:11pm On Nov 03, 2016
Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, has said he would destroy his green card if Donald Trump becomes president of the United States.

Soyinka said this on Wednesday while giving a speech to students of Oxford University, England, reports the Guardian UK.

“If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he’ll do is to say [that] all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I’m not waiting for that.

“The moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up,” said Soyinka, who is scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs.

The internationally-acclaimed playwright and poet described Britain’s decision to exit the European Union as a “ridiculous decision”.
He said: “What is happening in Europe shouldn’t surprise any of us … It has happened before. We were here when Enoch Powell was leading his thugs out to drive blacks from here.

“It’s a constant fight to try to get a nation to recognise its own noble persuasions, its own persuasions of the loftiness of human possibility. It’s for young people like you to say no to them whenever that happens.”

Soyinka also informed the students that the torch of African literature is being carried by the younger generation.

“I think we of the older are getting a little bit tired, and I think our production gets thinner and thinner. But fortunately, it doesn’t worry any of us, as far as I know, because the body of literature that is coming out [is] varied and liberated.

“African literature suffered from some kind of ideological spasm in which the younger generation was bombarded by a sense of ideological duty, in other words it was bombarded with a very simplistic notion by leftist radical writers, very reformative revolutionary thinkers, that all literature is ideological and therefore writers must ensure that their writing illustrates progressive ideologies.”

PoliticsBuhari: I Felt Like Absconding When I Assumed Office by ijebuloaded(op): 3:52pm On Nov 03, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari says he felt like “absconding” after seeing the enormity of the challenges facing the country when he assumed office in May 2015.

He was speaking on Thursday during a parley with participants of the Senior Executive Course 38 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS) at the state house in Abuja.

He again blamed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Nigeria’s economic woes.

Buhari said: “For 16 years and eight consecutive governments of the other party… there was unprecedented revenue realised, the oil projection which can be verified was 2.1 million barrels per day. From 1999-2015 the average cost of each Nigerian barrel of oil was $100 per barrel.

“When we came it fell to less than $30 per barrel and is now between 40 and 50. Actually I felt like absconding because 27 out of 36 states in Nigeria cannot pay salaries and and we know they have no other source than to depend on salaries.

“And I asked any savings? I was told there were no savings. And I asked what have you done on agriculture, power, rails, roads? Nothing. You know more than I do because you move around. I have not been moving around since after elections but you do. How many of the Trunk A (federal) roads are still good enough?

“How much power do we have although there are some elements of sabotage. I was told the money was users to import food and fuel. I didn’t believe the answer and I still don’t believe it. Until now substantial number of people in the east eat garri and groundnut, in the west pounded yam, cassava, vegetables, in the north tuwo which is made from any of the grains, millet, sorghum. They eat it in the night and warm it in the morning and eat it and take fura dinunu in the afternoon. How many of those people can afford foreign food?

“Then they said I should check out the petroleum sector. The legislature dedicated 445,000 barrels per day to the refineries and that is just 60 per cent of our requirements.

“I said OK, what of the 40 per cent? The marketers that are bringing it just present documents, papers are just stamped and monies are taken away. This is the type of things that the Nigerian elites are doing for our own country. When you go back look at your colleagues and encourage them to be truly Nigerians.”
