Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia took agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a wild goose chase as she traveled with them from Lagos to Benin and Asaba in search of properties she claimed her late mother bequeathed to her. However, the search was futile as the judge was unable to show agents the said properties she allegedly inherited from her mother. rita-ofili-ajumogobia An EFCC source told SaharaReporters that a bus carrying Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia and a team of anti-corruption agents first arrived in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, because the judge had claimed that some of the $900k she wired abroad from bank accounts in Nigeria was income from properties she ostensibly inherited. She had told EFCC agents that her brother, Donald Ofili, and a lawyer based in Asaba, the Delta State capital, were managing the said properties. However, agents who traveled to Benin City to verify the existence of the houses claimed by the embattled judge as the source of some of her income did not find a single property. Our source said that the judge, who sat in the back of the bus, often covered herself with a wrapper and muttered into a hand-held device as they drove her to Benin City. According to the source, EFCC agents let the judge be, but occasionally asked her to let them talk to her brother, Mr. Donald Ofili. However, on their arrival in Benin, the judge’s brother reportedly spoke on the phone to EFCC agents, asserting that their mother owned homes in the city, but confessing that his sister had asked him to claim that the $120k he wired into her account came from rental fees. The operatives said that, on discovering that her brother had blown open her game, Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia changed tunes and claimed that a lawyer not known to her brother managed the properties. She also told stunned agents that she could not recollect the addresses of the properties. When agents reminded her that her brother also claimed not to know the addresses of the properties, the judge urged the agents to proceed to Asaba, claiming she would then have enough time to contact the mysterious Benin lawyer. Upset by the judge’s evasive manner, EFCC agents demanded to speak with the lawyer in advance as they drove to Asaba. Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia reportedly rang the so-called lawyer and handed her phone over to an EFCC agent. The man then promised the EFCC agents that he would be waiting to receive them in Asaba, adding that he was visiting a community outside Asaba. However, once the EFCC agents arrived in Asaba, the judge told them that the lawyer who reportedly managed her properties had traveled to Owerri. Furious, members of the EFCC team demanded to speak again with the lawyer, but his line had been switched off. They demanded that the judge take them to the properties, but she again said she did not know the address. The irate EFCC operatives spent the night in Asaba, but seized the judge’s phone to ensure she would not use it to plot against them. As they disembarked from the bus, the agents discovered that the judge had another phone hidden in her wrapper, which they also took away. Our source said that, despite taking away the second phone, they discovered the judge continued to mutter under her wrapper during the journey back to Lagos. Once in Lagos, a female EFCC detective searched the judge and discovered that she had hidden up to five phones underneath her clothing. She had also concealed an iPad. According to our EFCC source, an initial check of the phones showed that the embattled justice was using different phones to communicate with her suspected accomplices perhaps tutoring them to lie to investigators about the source of her inexplicable cash transactions. The source said the phones retrieved from the judge would also be sent to experts for forensic checks. A senior EFCC source confirmed the drama with Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia, adding that the agency was considering revoking the judge’s administrative bail, accusing her of making moves to undermine their investigative tasks. Another Nigerian soldier was, yesterday, killed, three others wounded with no fewer than 13 Boko Haram terrorists decimated when the insurgents attacked the troops’ location in Northern Borno town of Kangarwa. The fighting, which lasted for hours, was said to have been so intense that the Army had to request air support from the Nigerian Air Force, resulting in the deployment of a fighter jet and a surveillance aircraft with which the terrorists were subdued. It was learned that many of the terrorists escaped with bullet wounds from the ground and air assault. Confirming the confrontation in Abuja, Army spokesman, Col Sani Usman, said: “Troops of 119 Task Force Battalion, 8 Division Nigerian Army, deployed at Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, yesterday, neutralised 13 Boko Haram terrorists in a counter-attack carried out by the troops. “Unfortunately, one soldier paid the supreme price during the encounter, while three others were wounded in action. “The offensive, which began at 4p.m., lasted for roughly four hours, necessitating the troops calling for air support.” Source : http://ijebuloaded.com/news-soldier-13-terrorists-killed-army-air-force-repel-attack-borno/ |

The Senate has began the probe of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi over the concession of western (Lagos-Kano) and Eastern (Port Harcourt – Maiduguri) rail lines to General Electric company, based in the United States (US). oyegun-amaechi This follows the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Albert Akpan (PDP, Akwa-Ibom Northeast) on the concession of rail lines with a potential of $2billion. Akpan told the Senate that the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), and the Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (NAIF) upon the approval of the National Council on Privatization (NPC) in April 2015, developed a roadmap for the concessioning of the rail lines. He said the BPE had already engaged the Global Infrastructure Facility (GIF) and the World Bank in discussions on accessing funding for transactions Advisers, while the Ministry of Transport had formally appointed Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and Greenwich as financial Advisers for the same purpose. He said in August, this year, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo inaugurated the steering and Technical committee in line with the provision of section 11(k) of the Public Enterprises (Privatisation and Commercialisation) Act 1999 to fast track the process of the concession of the rail lines. “It is the responsibility of the steering and technical committees of the NPC inaugurated by the Vice president in August 2016 to negotiate with potential bidders for this concession, how then did the Ministry of Transport engage General Electric Company as far back as June, 2016,” he said. He said the Ministry of Transport had violated the provisions of the Public Enterprises (Privatization and Commercialization) Act, 1999 by unilaterally engaging the General Electric (GE) for the concession. The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, mandated the Senate Committees on Privatization, Land Transport, Finance, Special Duties, Trade and Investment, Judiciary and Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes to investigate the procedure adopted in the engagement of General Electric for the concession. Muhammad Abu Ali, a lieutenant colonel, whom Boko Haram dreaded, is dead. Ali led one of the army’s fiercest-ever battles with Boko Haram, in February 2015, culminating in the recapture of Baga town in Borno state. Sani Usman, army spokeman, said he was killed in an encounter with the insurgents on Friday. The deceased was was granted accelerated promotion from rank of major to lieutenant-colonel in September 2015, for his courageous performance in a series of the army’s engagements with Boko Haram. Usman added that four soldiers were killed, but that troops killed 14 of the insurgents who attacked a location of the army in Borno state. “Yesterday at about 10.00pm suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked a 119 Battalion Nigerian army location at Mallam Fatori, northern Borno state. The troops fought gallantly and repelled the attack, killing 14 Boko Haram terrorists,” he said. “Unfortunately, we lost an officer and four soldiers, while four other soldiers sustained various degrees of injuries during the encounter. One of those killed in action, was Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Abu Ali, the Commanding Officer of 272 Task Force Tank Battalion.” During investigative trip to the theatre of war, soldiers, majority of whom have built an unwanted reputation for always criticising the army hierarchy, spoke highly of Ali’s professionalism. One of the soldiers, who partook in the Baga operation, narrated his experience. “In the case Baga, when it was recaptured from Boko Haram, Abu Ali, who led that operation, told the boko-haram-the sparknge soldiers that they should not worry, that they should only do five percent of the job, that he was going to do 95% of the job with the tanks,” he had said. “And that was exactly what happened. He did most of the work with the tanks. He was a major at that time and his promotion after the operation was automatic because he performed very well. One smallish guy like that o.” Source : http://ijebuloaded.com/breaking-boko-haram-kills-col-ali-leader-operation-recaptured-baga/

A former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, his lawyer confirmed on Friday. Mr. Obanikoro’s associate, Demola Olarewaju, also confirmed the development , saying “he has been released and now resting in Abuja”. The Punch newspaper reported that Mr. Obanikoro was released at about 5p.m. Friday. He immediately left for his residence, the paper said. Mr. Obanikoro was detained on October 17 after returning from the United States to submit himself to the EFCC on fraud allegations. EFCC sources said Mr. Obanikoro paid N100 million to the commission out of the over N800 million of public funds he was accused of spending. The source said the former minister’s passports were confiscated. But his lawyer, Mr. Onoja says that the passports would be returned to his client anytime he requests for them. “Well, we have presented all the guarantors and perfected his bail conditions, so the passports seizure shouldn’t be a big deal,” Mr. Onoja said. “If he intends to travel, he will apply for it and they will return them back to him.” Mr. Obanikoro was joined in the custody by other officials of the Goodluck Jonathan administration. A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, is still being detained at the headquarters of the anti-graft office, as well as former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, and a former FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed. They face various allegations of financial wrongdoing. Source : http://ijebuloaded.com/news-efcc-releases-former-minister-obanikoro/

A witness, Mr. Richard Ihediwa, in the ongoing trial of former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisah Metuh, said on Thursday that the N400m Metuh got was disbursed as directed by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan. Ihediwa, led in evidence by the counsel to Metuh, Mr. Emeka Etiaba (SAN), told the Abuja High Court that Jonathan gave the directive on how the amount was to be spent. He said that N21m was paid to former PDP Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, for a property acquired for use by the party as its media intervention centre. He added that although the property, located in Asokoro area of Abuja, did not belong to Anenih, he assisted the PDP media team headed by the accused in securing it. He said, “The amount covered the cost of hiring the structure, utility vehicles as well as security gadgets at the centre.” The witness also told the court that various sums were paid to some groups coordinated by some government functionaries, including the late Oronto Douglas and Abbah Dabo. He said he was not very certain about the amount released to late Douglas, but added that N25m was released to Dabo as mobilisation fee for advocacy groups, in line with the directive. Ihediwa said the former president also approved different amounts for some other groups and Metuh disbursed the funds to them accordingly. He said because of the tension and high level of insecurity across the six geo-political regions of the country then, there was the need for government to mobilise various advocacy groups to stabilise the system. Meanwhile, Justice Okon Abang has reserved ruling for November 15 on applications filed by the defence counsel. NAN Source : http://ijebuloaded.com/news-gej-told-metuh-share-n400m-witness/

Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, has said he would destroy his green card if Donald Trump becomes president of the United States. Soyinka said this on Wednesday while giving a speech to students of Oxford University, England, reports the Guardian UK. “If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he’ll do is to say [that] all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I’m not waiting for that. “The moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up,” said Soyinka, who is scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs. The internationally-acclaimed playwright and poet described Britain’s decision to exit the European Union as a “ridiculous decision”. He said: “What is happening in Europe shouldn’t surprise any of us … It has happened before. We were here when Enoch Powell was leading his thugs out to drive blacks from here. “It’s a constant fight to try to get a nation to recognise its own noble persuasions, its own persuasions of the loftiness of human possibility. It’s for young people like you to say no to them whenever that happens.” Soyinka also informed the students that the torch of African literature is being carried by the younger generation. “I think we of the older are getting a little bit tired, and I think our production gets thinner and thinner. But fortunately, it doesn’t worry any of us, as far as I know, because the body of literature that is coming out [is] varied and liberated. “African literature suffered from some kind of ideological spasm in which the younger generation was bombarded by a sense of ideological duty, in other words it was bombarded with a very simplistic notion by leftist radical writers, very reformative revolutionary thinkers, that all literature is ideological and therefore writers must ensure that their writing illustrates progressive ideologies.” Source : http://ijebuloaded.com/news-soyinka-trump-wins-ill-destroy-american-green-card/
