PoliticsRachael Dickson Gives Birth To Quadruplet In The US by ijebuloaded(op): 3:41pm On Sep 23, 2016
After many years of marriage without a child, the First Lady of Bayelsa State, Dr. Rachael Dickson, has given birth to quadruplet in an undisclosed hospital in the United States of America (USA).

A statement signed by Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seriake Dickson, said the development contributed to the season of celebrations in the governor’s family.

The statement said: “The season of celebrations continues in the family of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State as his wife, the First Lady, Dr. Rachael Dickson just put to bed in the United States of America.

“She was delivered of a quadruplet; a bouncing baby boy and three beautiful baby girls. Mother and children are doing well.

“This is particularly good news for the family and Bayelsans because this bundle of joy is coming after many years of praying and waiting upon the Lord.
“Governor Dickson thanks friends, family members and Bayelsans for their prayers and support and enjoins them to continue to pray for the family”.

PoliticsFull Text Of President Buhari’s Speech At Africa Business Forum, New York, USA by ijebuloaded(op): 3:28pm On Sep 23, 2016
I am delighted to be present here today at the 2nd edition of the United States–Africa Business Forum. I wish to thank the United States Department of Commerce and Bloomberg Philanthropies for organizing this event and for giving me this opportunity to address this august gathering of Political and Business Leaders from the United States of America (USA), Africa and other regions of the World. I believe all of us will take advantage of this Forum to establish and strengthen business relationships; share valuable experience; and collaborate for mutual benefits.

The United States has historically been one of Nigeria’s top trading partners; for decades, the US was the biggest importer of Nigeria’s crude oil. In the last two years, however, the sharp decline in US imports of our crude, on account of rising domestic production of Shale, has altered the trade balance between our two countries. But it has also thrown up opportunities for Nigeria to increase its non-oil exports – especially in agricultural products – to the U.S.

Today, Nigeria enjoys a mutually beneficial trade and investment relations with USA. This relationship has culminated in massive inflow of Foreign Direct Investment into Nigeria. There are several US Companies doing business in Nigeria, including Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, General Electric, IBM, Microsoft, Procter and Gamble, Coca-Cola, Pepsi Company, British-American Tobacco Company, UPS Courier Company, BCG, Johnson Wax Nigeria Ltd, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, to name a few.

These are no doubt challenging times for the Nigerian economy. But let me use this opportunity to boldly affirm our conviction that there is no crisis without an accompanying opportunity. In our case, we see Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges – occasioned mainly by the fall in oil prices – as an opportunity to set the economy firmly on the path of true diversification, sustainable economic growth, and shared prosperity.

Since the inception of my Administration in 2015, all efforts have been aimed at ensuring that all Nigerians enjoy rising standards of living. We campaigned for and came into office on the back of three fundamental issues: One, Securing Nigeria from terrorism and banditry, Two, Fighting corruption and ensuring that public funds work for the public good, and Three, Revamping an economy that was dangerously dependent on crude oil, and afflicted by rising inequality and jobless growth. We are pleased to note that our efforts are yielding fruit.

(On Security) – Hundreds of communities and thousands of people have been liberated from the clutches of the terrorists, under our watch, and are now getting a chance to, with support from the government and the international community, rebuild their homes and their lives.

(On corruption) – Our quest is to ensure, through a combination of institution-building and judicial efforts, that public funds work for the public good, and that persons responsible for overseeing the use of these funds come to this task with the utmost sense of transparency and accountability. Earlier this year we signed up to the Open Government Partnership, a clear demonstration of our commitment to a radical departure from a past characterized by large-scale state-enabled corruption. Let me also assure that we will continue to strengthen Government institutions established to address investors’ concerns.

(On the economy) – We are weaning ourselves from a historical dependence on crude oil, diversifying our economy, and putting it on the path of sustainable and inclusive growth. To this end, we have embarked on policies aimed at establishing an open, rules-based and market-oriented economy. We will continue to actively engage with the private sector at the highest levels to listen to your concerns and to assure you of our commitment to creating enabling policies in which your businesses can thrive. Indeed, we have constituted a Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, which is working on a wide range of business environment reforms, ranging from making our planned visa-on-arrival regime a reality, to ports reform, to improving the speed and efficiency of land titling and business registration. We aspire to make Nigeria one of the most attractive places to do business.

Let me now focus on the priority investment sectors for our administration: Infrastructure, Industry, Agriculture, Mining and the Digital Economy.

Infrastructure: For far too long Nigeria has under-invested in the critical infrastructure necessary for a modern economy. Now, that is set to change. We are working hard to bridge an electricity deficit of several thousands of megawatts, which will require substantial private sector investment, especially in Transmission. Our railway system is being opened up after decades of a government monopoly that has hindered the needed private sector investment. We are well on course with a concessioning deal that will see General Electric take over hundreds of kilometers of existing rail assets, and invest billions of dollars to upgrade assets and services.

On Industry, there is the Nigerian Industrial Plan that is being implemented. The implementation is directed at interventions to improve productivity and output in five industry groups, namely: agri-business and agro-allied; solid minerals and metals; oil and gas; construction, and light manufacturing. Currently, investments and partnerships are being directed to leather and leather products; sugar; palm oil processing; food processing, specifically tomato and fruit processing. Automobile assembly and manufacturing are important to the diversification of the Nigerian economy. Industrial zones and parks are being established. This is work in progress.

In Agriculture, through our Agricultural Promotion Policy (APP), we are prioritizing the improvement in domestic production of rice, wheat, maize, fish, dairy milk, soya beans, poultry, fruits and vegetables, and sugar, as well as the export of cowpeas, cocoa, cashew, cassava (starch, chips and ethanol), ginger, sesame, oil palm, fruits and vegetables, beef and cotton. To achieve these goals, we are ready to partner with and support willing private investors, by creating an environment that is stable, safe, and competitive. I am pleased to note that Coca Cola has recently invested substantially in one of Nigeria’s best-known dairy and fruit juice companies, and is looking to increase its stake over the next few years.

In Mining, Nigeria is determined to build a world class minerals and mining ecosystem designed to serve a targeted domestic and export market. To accomplish this, we are prioritizing exploration, local processing and beneficiation of our mineral assets with provision of generous incentives including favorable tax regimes and royalties to investors interested in our market. We have as part of this identified mineral resources, which exist in commercially viable quantities, and designated them as strategic priorities for Nigeria’s domestic Industrialisation and Infrastructure requirements.

In the Digital Economy, which, like Infrastructure, has a multiplier effect that touches every part of the economy, opportunities abound. We have welcomed and continue to welcome investors willing to take a stake in one of the world’s largest and fastest growing telecoms markets – a market which has attracted more than $35 billion in FDI over the last decade and half. The Nigerian Communications Commission will shortly commence a licensing process for the deployment of broadband infrastructure across metropolitan areas in the country.

Young Nigerians are increasingly demonstrating that they have the talent and the passion to leverage the digital economy for solving our most pressing challenges. We are seeing a lot of activity in that space, and not just in Lagos, but even in cities further afield, from Uyo to Abuja. There are currently 150 million active mobile phone lines in the country – sixty percent of which are connected to the Internet. I can confidently say that Nigeria is in the early stages of a domestic technology revolution, and the government is paying serious attention and offering its full support.

Three weeks ago I hosted Mark Zuckerberg, the Founder and CEO of Facebook, which is now used regularly by 17 million Nigerians, more people than in any other country in Africa. A few months ago Mr. Zuckerberg invested $24 million in Andela, a technology company that has Iyin Aboyeji, a 25-year-old Nigerian as one of its co-founders, and maintains its main campus in the city of Lagos. On the same day that Mr. Zuckerberg visited I also welcomed and interacted with 30 of the most exciting technology startups in the country; among whom lie tomorrow’s billion-dollar corporations.

In terms of Trade, Nigeria is keen to more effectively leverage the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) opportunities to boost exports to the US Market. In collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) we have developed an AGOA Response Strategy to boost exports under AGOA. We are willing to collaborate with willing development partners to address some of the constraints to accessing the US Market under AGOA, such as our inability to comply with US requirements. With our U.S. counterparts, we are also working on a post-AGOA framework. Nigeria will continue to work closely with the U.S. to ensure that trade works for development.

I urge the American businesses present here to take advantage of the investment opportunity that Nigeria represents. Nigeria remains the number one investment destination in Africa, with total FDI inflow of about US$3.64 billion in 2015. Apart from our domestic market of 170 million, the largest in Africa, we are also the main gateway to a combined West African consumer market that is about as large as ours. With a median age of 19, and with 70 percent of the population below the age of 35, Nigeria’s greatest potential lies in the talent and energy of her youth.

Your Excellencies, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, we recognize that the economic benefits of our trade and investment relations with the United States and other partners are unambiguous. In order to encourage private capital inflow, we have packaged some fiscal investment incentives which include the following: up to 5 years of tax holiday for activities classified as ‘pioneer’; Tax-free operations; no restrictions on expatriate quotas in Free Trade Zones; Capital Allowances (Agriculture, Manufacturing and Engineering); a low VAT regime of 5 percent; among others.

Let me use this occasion to announce the commencement of the latest in a series of bilateral engagements between the United States and Nigeria: the U.S. Nigeria Commercial and Investment Dialogue. This Dialogue, which will focus on Infrastructure, Agriculture, the Digital Economy, Investment and Regulatory Reform, will be jointly led by the Nigerian Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, and the US Commerce Secretary, and will include business executives from both countries. By strengthening existing trade and investment ties between our two countries, as well as opening up new vistas, it will complement the work currently being done by the US-Nigeria Binational Commission, the US-Nigeria Trade and Investment Framework, and similar initiatives. We very much look forward to the mutual benefits that will accrue from this Dialogue.

On this note, I enjoin investors here today to take advantage of this Forum to build synergies that would translate to increased trade and investment flows between Nigeria and United States of America. Nigeria welcomes you.

I wish you a fruitful deliberation. Thank You for listening

AgricultureWorld Bank Partners Ogun On Agriculture, Rural Development by ijebuloaded(op): 5:18am On Sep 22, 2016
The World Bank has indicated its interest to partner with the Ogun State Government on rural development and improved agricultural production in the State.

The Country Director of the World Bank, Rachid Bemessaoud, made this known yesterday when he paid a courtesy visit to the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, in his Oke-mosan, Abeokuta office.

Bemessaoud said apart from rural development and agriculture, the bank would also look into areas affecting governance by employing the instrumentality of financial management, through the involvement of its International Finance Corporation (IFC).

According to him “We are in the State in response to a request to help develop its education, agriculture, rural development and investors relations. We will spend a couple of days in the State and we are willing to assist where necessary’’.The World Bank Chief added that the team was highly impressed at the vision and leadership style of the Amosun’s administration.
In his response, Amosun said no State or nation could solely survive without the help of the private sector, saying the State is ready to play its part in the partnership with the emphasis that “If we must get it right, we must be private sector driven.’’

CrimeN’delta Militants Vow To Bomb NNPC HQ If Patience Jonathan Is Arrested by ijebuloaded(op): 4:45am On Sep 22, 2016
The Niger Delta Peoples Professional Volunteer Force (NDPPVF), a group which said its members are workers in the oil and gas industry, has threatened to bomb the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrests former First Lady, Patience Jonathan.

Accusing the anti-graft agency of witch-hunting the former first lady, the group, according to an online news portal, TheCable, advised EFCC to lift the No Debit Order imposed on her Skye Bank accounts.

The accounts contain more than $15 million, but Jonathan’s wife has since explained that the money was meant for her medical bills.

Last week, the EFCC filed money laundering charges against Waripamowei Dudafa, Jonathan’s special adviser on domestic affairs, whom the former first lady directed to open the accounts Dudafa, Amajuoyi Briggs, a lawyer; and Damola Bolodeoku, a Skye Bank official.

On Tuesday, the Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, also told journalists that Jonathan’s wife was under investigation.

But in a statement by Parkinson George-Amabo, spokesman of NDPPVF, the group warned Magu that investigating Patience could result into “bad blood, embarrassment and possible unrest in the Niger Delta.”

The group said it is not in support of corruption, but against the manner in which the agency is investigating Patience who has had an “impressive and fortuitous pedigree.”

“As a matter of fact, the EFCC has launched a criminal investigation of Mrs. Jonathan and in the process, frozen her bank accounts domiciled with a Nigerian commercial bank without affording her opportunity to state her own side of the matter,” the statement read.

“Nobody is above the law. The NDPPVF does not support or condone corruption. If Mrs. Jonathan was found to be corrupt, we shall not hesitate to call for her prosecution.

“We, however, have a grouse with the modus operandi of Mrs. Jonathan’s investigation, given her status as the wife of a former deputy governor, former governor, former vice-president, former acting president and finally, former president. She is perhaps, the only Nigerian woman – dead or alive – with such an impressive and fortuitous pedigree; which accounts for why the EFCC needs to thread with caution.

“Recently, there have been calls on the Attorney-General of the Federation as well as the EFCC to arrest and prosecute the former First Lady for alleged money laundering.

“We shall simultaneously bomb the 4 wings of the NNPC Towers the day it is announced that Mrs. Patience Goodluck Jonathan has been arrestedThe group added that before her husband emerged as vice-president in 2007, the EFCC investigated Mrs. Jonathan and cleared of any wrongdoing.”

CrimeBoko Haram: Why Shekau Was Missing In New Video by ijebuloaded(op): 6:48am On Sep 18, 2016
The factional leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, was conspicuously missing in the new video released by the insurgents’ group because he was nursing the ‘fatal’ wound he sustained recently, a source who has been following the insurgents’ video since 2014 said.
A new video released by Boko Haram last Wednesday showed a crowd of insurgents purportedly observing the Eid Kabir without their leader, Shekau, who the military claimed was fatally wounded during an air raid on August 19.
“The air interdiction took place on Friday, August 19, 2016, while the terrorists were performing Friday rituals at Taye village, Gombale general area within Sambisa forest, Borno State. The Boko Haram commanders confirmed dead include Abubakar Mubi, Malam Nuhu and Malam Hamman, amongst others, while their leader, the so-called “Abubakar Shekau,” is believed to be fatally wounded on his shoulders,” the military said.
Sunday Sun gathered from a source that had link with the insurgents in the past that the jihadists’ leader might be ill. “From all indications and from my checks, the man is ill. He was not also in the audio released by the group in the first week of August. All is not well with him,” the source said.

Commenting on the observed absence of Shekau, the media coordinator of the counter-insurgency operation in the northeast, Operation Lafiya Dole, Air Commodore Dele Alonge said the video confirmed claims by the military that Shekau is indisposed. “For the past one month, how many of the Boko Haram terrorists have seen either the first Shekau, second or the person cloning him? We have said earlier and we maintained that Shekau or the man cloning him is fatally wounded from our troops’ bombardment. That was why he wasn’t in their video,” he told Sunday Sun reporter.
He also said the video was “a mere propaganda device to sustain their terror act,” adding, “We won’t give them space.”
But some residents of Maiduguri warned the authorities and the military not to take the insurgents threat for granted. A religious leader who preferred anonymity urged the military not to view the threat as mere propaganda, noting that the terrorists group may have used the president’s name to divert the attention of the security to cause havoc somewhere.
“We shouldn’t treat the Boko Haram threat to capture the president alive as mere propaganda as the military want us believe. The threat should be taken seriously because of its implication.
Boko Haram may be issuing the threat to direct the attention and energy of our security to the protection of the presidential villa and other senior government officials only to target vulnerable areas,” the cleric said.
Shekau was once reported killed by the Nigerian army in 2009.
The army also said the acerbic leader of the jihadists had died between July 25 and August 3 following raids on his hideout by soldiers in Sambisa Forest, where he was fatally wounded.
But he reappeared some months later in videos, threatening to attack public places and towns. The threat was later carried out by the terrorists as they seized many communities in Borno and Adamawa states. In 2014, the army also claimed it killed a man purporting to be Shekau (dubbed Shekau II by the Nigerian media) in another battle at Konduga between September 12 and 14. That claim generated reactions from some Nigerians.

PoliticsNigerian Opposition Calls For Protest Against President Buhari by ijebuloaded(op): 3:26pm On Sep 06, 2016
Nigeria’s northern opposition leader and national chairperson of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), Balarabe Musa, has called on Nigerians to protest against President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration, Naij reports.
Balarabe alleged that Buhari’s administration had failed in ensuring food security in the west African country.
He said that hunger was a powerful tool to instigate protests, adding that Nigerians had a right to protect their interests through demonstrations.

“Well, they [Nigerians] should protest. I know that it is a risk because security men may shoot them. However, they should protest because this is their life. Somebody is playing with their lives, somebody is destroying their lives, they should defend their lives and protect their interest.
“There is hunger in the land and Nigerians are dying of hunger,” Balarabe was quoted as saying.
The development followed just a few days after Emeritus Archbishop of Lagos, Cardinal Anthony Okogie, addressed an open letter to Buhari on the state of the nation, pleading for the president to intensify his efforts in solving the current economic crisis and alleviating the scourge of hunger facing the nation.
“Remember that you cannot put a crown on your head. It is the people who put it on you. Otherwise one day, you will get tired of it. Please listen to the legitimate cries of your fellow citizens,” Cardinal Okogie’s letter read in part.

PoliticsDino Melaye To Buhari: Sack Economic Team Now by ijebuloaded(op): 3:02am On Sep 05, 2016
Worried by the poor state of the economy which has brought unprecedented hardship and hunger on the masses, Senator Dino Melaye has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take urgent and drastic measures to reboot the ailing economy. Melaye is Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT.
Last week, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), a government agency, released its report which covered the first six months of the year, indicating that the economy is the worst in 29 years. In the report, unemployment rate is 19.3% while inflation is 17.1%
Part of the measures canvassed by Senator Melaye include the immediate sack of three prominent members of the Federal Executive Council. However, many prominent Nigerians yesterday reacted to Melaye’s comment.
In a statement issued in Abuja, entitled, “The barking is over, it’s time to bite,” the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator representing Kogi West accused most members of Buhari’s cabinet of what he called gross incompetence, inexcusable ineptitude and a distressing lack of capacity to deliver on the mandate of their ministries/agencies.
Melaye has called for the sack of three key officials of the Buhari economic team.
He called on the President to constitute an “Emergency Ad hoc Economic Team” made up of all former ministers of finance, budget and national planning, CBN governors as well as members drawn from the academia with “deep knowledge of developmental economics to drive the economic revival programme”
“The President must immediately transit from mere rhetoric to drastic but positive action to save the economy and Nigeria from total collapse. The hunger in the land is real, pervasive, widespread and debilitating for the poor masses. As I walk the streets of my constituency these days, I constantly harbour a foreboding that I could be stoned by my angry constituents for the failure of Mr President to fulfil his campaign promises and expectations to Nigerians.”
“Nigeria is tottering on a dangerous precipice, sliding perilously to a certain catastrophe if the current economic malaise is not halted immediately.”
“I was a permanent fixture at the All Progressives Congress (APC’s) presidential campaign rallies and events, functioning mostly as the Master of Ceremonies (MC). I am a proud APC member, a party bonafide with great stakes in the success or failure of this administration, so no one can accuse me of sour grapes or meddlesomeness.”
Reacting to Melaye’s comment, former Minister of Transport, Ebenezer Babatope said the Buhari administration has nothing to offer Nigerians and should resign.
“APC is punishing Nigerians with their actions and decisions. The best thing for President Buhari and his administration to do is to have the courage to resign, call for fresh elections and get new powers because they have failed. There is so much hunger in the land. It is not about just sacking his economic team and getting new people.
“The fact is that they do not have what to offer Nigerians, so both he and his team should resign, so that fresh elections can be conducted. They have no idea what it means to govern. They are just wasting our time as they do not have the intellectual capacity to govern. Let them just admit to Nigerians that that they are not competent so that we can have new elections,” he said.
National Auditor of the APC, Chief George Moghalu said the Senator was entitled to his position on measures to revive the ailing economy.
He said:” That’s his view and I am sure he didn’t just wake up to say this. I hope he has his reasons for demanding for the sack of certain ministers.”
Former governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, yesterday described Melaye as a role model considering his frankness on issues.
He said: “I think that young man, Senator Dino Melaye, has become a role model. This is because it is not easy for someone to benefit from a system and still criticise that system. I do not know if President Buhari has any economic team. People are dying everyday. I do not know how anybody can come out to defend what is happening under the present administration. The change that they promised us has become like from frying pan to fire.”
For former minister of information, Prince Tony Momoh, there is nothing wrong in what the Kogi State-born Senator said. His words: “It is his own opinion. There is freedom of expression. People have their own views. For instance, there is hunger in the land and people are expressing anger. But everybody knows that the only language that hunger understands is food. Manna does not fall from heaven now. When the Israelites got to Canaan, manna stopped from falling from heaven.
“We prefer imported rice to that grown in Nigeria but we do not have money to pay. There is economic recession worldwide. There is hardly any country including Saudi Arabia that is not either in recession or expecting recession soon. ”
Also reacting, Second Republic National Assembly member, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has thrown his weight behind Melaye. He said those who are managing the economy are “grossly incompetent.”
Mohammed said: “I support the call by Melaye that the economic team of the President should be sacked. In the first place, they are not even qualified to be appointed. They have not managed anything like this before.
He, however, took a swipe at Melaye, accusing him of lacking the moral right to advise Buhari on what to do. “Dino Melaye should not speak. He is one of the lawmakers in the National Assembly backing Saraki and he is allegedly corrupt. The National Assembly is partly responsible for the problems we are in. If I have my way, I will even sack them,” he added.
