PoliticsRe: Can Removing Import Duties Reduce Nigeria's Food Price? by Ikaeniyan0: 2:48pm On Aug 15, 2024
DyshApp:
Nigeria’s food prices have been soaring lately, causing a lot of concern for both the government and everyday folks.

The big idea to tackle this issue? Axing import duties on food items—a move that once seemed out of reach. Import duties are basically taxes slapped on goods coming into the country, and they can make stuff way more expensive for consumers.

By slashing or even removing these taxes, the Nigerian government could potentially bring down food prices and boost food security.

Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi recently weighed in, saying that scrapping duties on imported food is a step in the right direction. He noted, "The protest was about several issues, including ending hunger. We found out that a lot of our food is imported. Importation takes time, so to ease the burden of import costs, the president has temporarily suspended customs duties and taxes on imported food items."

Import duties are meant to protect local industries, bring in revenue, and regulate the flow of goods. But these taxes also jack up prices for imported essentials like rice, wheat, and processed foods—items that Nigeria can’t produce enough of locally.

When import duties are in place, importers face extra costs, which are usually passed on to consumers. For a country like Nigeria that leans heavily on imported food, these duties can really hit the wallet.

But can the removal of import duties really cut down food prices?

Check out the risks and challenges invloved with the link below👇
Yes, it will lead to the fall in prices of rice, bread etc

You lack the capacity to make your own points. So you resort to insults. Next, you start to play the victim card by saying it's Obidients who are insulting you instead.

Most of these unused farmlands were well used before the Buhari Administration started using the Fulani to terrorize farmers.
Only an IP0BDIENTZ will lie without giving a dam like this.

You made it seem as if it was under Buhari herdsmen started attacking farmers.

No matter how you lie, it won't still make obi become the president in 2027.

Though the op is confuse. His title is different from the content

But even in business sector, we're still the least.

Dangote is the richest black man but still not among top 30 richest men in the world.

We have less successful business men compared to other race
In 2013, Dangote net worth was $20 billion. He's the first black man to hit the figure. But today, Dangote net worth is about $13 billion.

A lot of black countries are not well runned compared to white, Arab, Americans and Asian countries.

When government start getting things right, then I believe we will start having lots of successful business men too

However, when we flipped the story there seemed to be something unpleasant.

In as much as people of African origin are excelling in sports globally, it would bring a great joy to see African people fully represented in all walks of life; in space technology, deep water sciences, innovation and community leadership, and not just in sports.
To every community leader, please teach our young people that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

You are talking of government support when government has not even provided the enabling environment for the farmers to support themselves. Most of these unused farmlands were well used before the Buhari Administration started using the Fulani to terrorize farmers. Tinubu is following the footsteps of Buhari as he promised. So, which govt are you expecting to come and support farmers?
So it was under Buhari Fulani herdsmen started attacking farmers and destroying farmlands? You IP0Bdientz are hypocrites

PoliticsTinubu Approves Implementation Of Zero Duty On Food Imports by Ikaeniyan0(op): 7:17am On Aug 15, 2024
President Bola Tinubu has approved the implementation of zero percent import duty and exemption of value-added tax (VAT) on basic food items.

This is according to a letter from the Ministry of Finance to the Nigeria Customs Service seen by BusinessDay.

“This is to confirm that His Excellency, Mr. President has approved the implementation of Zero percent duty rate (0 percent) and Value Added Tax (VAT) exemption on the under-listed basic food items with effect from 15th July, 2024 until the 31st day of December 2024,” the letter read.

The policy is restricted to the items listed in the letter such as maize, millet, rice, wheat , among others, and it is effective from July 15 until December 31 2024.

The letter said this measure is geared towards ameliorating the high cost of food items in the Nigerian market and shall be limited to the national supply gap to be determined by a committee set up by the Minister.

“The importation of these items shall also be limited to investors with milling capacity and verifiable Backward Integration Program for some of the items listed,” the ministry noted.

Other items listed include husked brown rice, grain sorghum, and beans. These items had duty rate levy ranging from 30 percent – 5 percent.
