By Tony Nwanko Evangelist Elliot Uko is the founder of Igbo Youth Movement and leader South-East Democratic Coalition. In this interview, he speaks on the Buhari Presidency and other national issues. Excerpts: How is the South-East welcoming the new government? We, in the South-East, voted massively for President Jonathan, and our candidate didn’t win. So, normally, adjusting to the reality will take some time. Some clever people will like to exploit the situation to drive their own personal agenda, and cloak it as if it is the South-East agenda, and these are to be expected. The youth wing of Ohanaeze is allegedly giving President Buhari, a list of people to appoint as ministers. Is this a South-East agenda? I am embarrassed by that. The same Ohanaeze youths went to Otuoke to welcome Jonathan the day he returned there. The following week, they issued a statement calling on the Buhari regime to come and collect a list of the PDP South-Easterners who just finished working with Jonathan, who they want him to prosecute. The same Ohanaeze youths called for Uwazurike’s arrest. When I phoned Uwazurike, he said he believed it was the elders that wanted to sacrifice him, and use his blood to endear themselves to Buhari. The same Ohanaeze Youths said that they are now another Ojukwu, to fight Buhari. The same Ohaneze Youths are now giving Buhari, a list of people to employ. It’s obvious they can’t do all these without their elders prodding them, but the desperation to endear themselves to Buhari is embarrassing the entire Igbo nation. Not even Arewa, not the Afenifere, has drawn a list for Buhari. People are wondering why Ohanaeze Youths should be drawing a list of ministers for Buhari. I don’t speak for Ohanaeze. I don’t even know the one which is the right Ohanaeze. There is so much confusion. I’ve stayed away from them for a long time. I’ve not spoken to any of their leaders for more than two years. Do you have faith in President Buhari to rebuild Nigeria? President Buhari has said he is ready to rebuild Nigeria. It is wrong to doubt him. The proper thing to do is to believe him, support him, and pray for him. If he fails, it will not be because we failed to support him. If he treats Ndigbo well, do you think they will swing with the APC? I don’t care about APGA, APC, Labour Party, PDP, whatever, I don’t belong to any one. But I do not think that it’s fair for anybody to expect Ndigbo to now suddenly become the undertakers of the PDP. Some years ago, I was in the sitting-room of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and he asked a top PDP man in the room, ‘Is it true that in the hall where Obasanjo announced that he had chosen Yar’Adua to run for President, that there was no Igbo man there?’ The PDP man said yes, and Ojukwu wept. Ojukwu wept because at that time, the Secretary of PDP was an Igbo man, Ojo Maduekwe. But in the hall where Obasanjo invited other people and announced that he had decided to nominate Umaru Yar’Adua as the President, there was no Igbo man there. It was Ahmadu Ali that picked up the phone and called Ojo Maduekwe to inform him. So the PDP has always excluded Ndigbo, in their arrogance. So, if Ndigbo decide to be undertakers of PDP, so help them God. The political dynamics of Nigeria has never involved Ndigbo, because Ndigbo are upright, sincere, and fair-minded. What Ndigbo want from Nigeria is a just, equitable country that is fair to all. Other people want a Nigeria where they will control and intimidate others. Others want a Nigeria where one of their own will be Head of State. Other people want a Nigeria where Ndigbo will be oppressed and sidelined, so that they will feel that they are the ones in charge, but Ndigbo don’t dream of afflicting anybody. If President Buhari gives Ndigbo a true sense of belonging, do you think Ndigbo will embrace APC? The answer is neither here nor there. What I want President Buhari to know is that if he doesn’t give Ndigbo a sense of belonging, then those elders who told us that he is an Igbo-hater will be correct, will be proven right. If he gives Ndigbo a sense of belonging, by listening to our cry to restructure this country, Ndigbo will finally come to see that he is not the evil as we have been told, and Ndigbo will begin to appreciate him, to work with him, maybe even embrace him. The choice is entirely his. We are a people oppressed and marginalized. We came into Nigeria with all our heart, but some other people convinced themselves that they had to blackmail Ndigbo in order for them to remain relevant. When the FCT was constituted and built, go and check the records, the people that allocated the lands at the FCT made sure that Igbo people got less than 5 per cent of all the allocations. 20 years on, Ndigbo own almost half of Abuja. How? Because they bought from those who got the allocations. Those who got the allocations finally sold their allocations to the Igbo. The degree of envy towards the Igbo man is so frightening. Just look at this. Some people are working hard so that President Buhari will not appoint an Igbo man as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. That is the degree of the hatred towards the Igbo man. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/buhari-adjusting-to-reality-will-take-ndigbo-some-time-uko/ |

EFCC re-arraigns Arisekola’s son, others for N1bn subsidy fraud The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday re-arraigned three oil marketers — Opeyemi Ajuyah, Abdullahi Alao and Olarenwaju Olalusi — over an alleged N1.1bn fuel-subsidy fraud. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the defendants were charged before Justice Lateefa Okunnu of an Ikeja High Court. They were re-arraigned on an amended eight counts alongside their companies — Majope Investment Limited and Axenergy Limited. NAN also reports that the defendants had been previously arraigned on October 10, 2012 on a nine counts of conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretences, forgery and use of fake documents. They had pleaded not guilty to the charges and were granted bail then. At the resumed sitting in the case on Friday, the EFCC counsel, Mr Seidu Atteh, informed the court that the prosecution had amended the charges. Atteh, therefore, asked the court to direct the defendants to retake their pleas and his request was granted. He said the defendants had fraudulently obtained N1bn from the Federal Government between January 2011 and April 2012. Atteh said the money was for subsidy payments from the Petroleum Support Fund for the purported importation of 15 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit. The defendants were also alleged to have forged a bill of lading, cargo manifest and other documents, which they used in facilitating the fraud. The alleged offences were said to contravene Sections 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act of 2006. The offences also violated Sections 363(a) and 364 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 363(1) stipulates that the offender on conviction, is liable to three years’ imprisonment. The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Following the arraignment, Atteh sought the leave of the court to recall five prosecution witnesses, who had previously testified in the trial. The judge granted his request and adjourned the matter till October 20 for trial. http://www.punchng.com/news/efcc-re-arraigns-arisekolas-son-others-for-n1bn-subsidy-fraud/ |

Boko Haram crisis: 'Buhari hope' for Nigerian death-row soldiers Femi Falana has been critical of the courts martial, which were held behind closed doors Nigeria's incoming president may commute the death sentences of 66 soldiers convicted for refusing to fight Boko Haram, a lawyer has said. Femi Falana told the BBC that Muhammadu Buhari had promised to review all operations against the militants. He said that he was now confident the soldiers, who said they lacked weapons to take on the Islamist insurgents, would not be executed and face justice. This week it was revealed another 579 soldiers face trial over indiscipline. Army spokesman Sani Usman said the courts martial, currently taking place in the capital, Abuja, were to ensure professionalism in the army. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has said that the Boko Haram insurgency, which began in 2009, had caused "one of the most serious humanitarian crises in Africa". 'State negligence' Mr Falana, who is a prominent human rights lawyer and represented some of the 66 sentenced to death for conspiracy, cowardice and mutiny last year, said the Nigerian government had failed to adequately equip the units fighting the insurgency in the north-east. "They [the soldiers] did not sign to commit suicide but to fight for their fatherland and since the government did not make weapons available, they were unable to fight," he told the BBC's Newsday programme. Hundreds of people have recently been rescued from Boko Haram captivity "The sentences are awaiting confirmation but we are taking steps to ensure that no soldier, no officer in Nigeria is executed on account of the negligence of the Nigerian state in motivating the soldiers to fight and equipping them." He said that outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan "had refused to assist to the request of the convicted soldiers to review their matter". "So happily the incoming government of Gen Muhammadu Buhari has promised to review the entire operations in the north-east region and we are confident that the cases of the officers and the soldiers will be reviewed so that justice will be done to them." Earlier, he told the Associated Press news agency the courts martial were a "travesty" as they were held in secret and evidence supplied by some of the accused indicated corrupt officers often diverted money meant for salaries and arms. Despite a state of emergency in three north-eastern state, Boko Haram managed to take over many towns and villages last year. It was only from the end of January, with military backing from Chad, Cameroon and Niger, that the army began to recapture territory. However, sporadic attacks and violence have continued. "Whole communities have fled their villages and endured unimaginable suffering... even if the fighting stopped tomorrow, it will take years of investment and painstaking work to rebuild livelihoods and services," ICRC president Peter Maurer said after a trip to the north-east. Help was also needed for the victims of sexual violence, amid widespread evidence the militants raped some of the kidnapped women and girls, he said. The group is still holding many women, girls and children captives including 219 schools girls it kidnapped from a school in Chibok in April last year. m.bbc.com/news/world-africa-32843389
