Super Eagles’ Vice Captain, Ahmed Musa has declared that his fully fit for Wednesday’s game against Guinea after being forced to the bench in the opening match against Burundi on Saturday. Musa, who was introduced in the second half of the 1-0 defeat of Burundi, was among the players that took ill at their camp in Ismaila.

He told journalists after the game in Alexandria that he has overcome the ailment that bogged him down, adding that he ready to burst loose on Wednesday.

“Every first game in a tournament is very difficult, the most important thing is that we have the three points,” Musa said. “I was eager to come in but I know that I fell ill, so the coach talked to me. As you can see Shehu too was ill. At the beginning of the game he was injured, so that’s what the coach was a little bit worried about that.

Naspers’ pay-television business MultiChoice Group, owners of DSTV is planning to lay off close to 2,200 workers in a shake-up of its customer care service, the company said on Friday.

The axing will affect workers in South Africa.

MultiChoice, which competes with Netflix in online streaming via Showmax, said in a statement it is launching a consultation process to cut 2,194 positions in MultiChoice South Africa’s customer care call centres and walk-in centres.

“This has not been an easy decision to make but, in a business driven by advancing technologies, we must continue to drive efficiencies yet be agile enough to adapt to evolving customer needs,” MultiChoice Group Chief Executive Calvo Mawela said.


“We must act decisively to align to the change in customer behaviour and competition from over-the-top services,” he added, referring to video services that stream directly over the internet.

“If we don’t reposition now, we run the risk of being completely misaligned and we put everyone’s jobs at risk.”
Under the Labour Relations Act, the consultation process will take 60 days.


Over the past three years, MultiChoice has seen a steady decline in the number of customer telephone calls and e-mails into its call centres and walk-ins to its customer service centres, the company said.

In contrast, self-service digital channels have continued to grow, now accounting for 70 percent of all its customer service contacts.

“The company is also in an environment where it will rely more on technology than people,” it said.

Job cuts are politically sensitive in South Africa, where the unemployment rate is more than 27 percent.


In his state of the nation address on Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa called the unemployment rate among the youth a “national crisis” that demands urgent, innovative and coordinated solutions.

MultiChoice said it will make new roles available for multi-skilled workers with the “expertise, skills and technological prowess to enhance the customer experience”.


As part of a support program agreed with unions and other employee representatives, the firm will offer voluntary severance packages, wellness support and financial planning, it said.

It will also continue paying for the current studies of MultiChoice bursary-funded employees, and some other benefits.

However the Information Communication and Technology Union (ICTU) said in a statement it had not been officially informed of the action, “which makes the process unlawful”.

“The employer has timed Friday to make announcement, which shows some cowardice tendencies of not dealing with the consequences of their actions,” it said, adding that it will seek an urgent engagement with MultiChoice.


Shares in the company closed nearly 2% stronger at 134 rand prior to the announcement.

Nollywood star, Mercy Johnson Okojie, is set to launch her new ‘kitchen talk show’ called Mercy’ s Menu in July.

Okojie, who disclosed her plans, said she has completed shoot for the new cook-talk show, adding that it would kick off in July.

The actress said that after some months of teasing fans, coupled with the 5.5 million followers on Instagram with her new focus, Okojie’s media managers confirmed that 13 episodes of the show have been completed.

Many women must have sung Hallelujah (I included) after they discovered gel nail polish. A polish that will look glossy and shiny and not chip for more than 3 weeks, is it not God sent. If you are one hands on lady who cooks, cleans and does a lot of other house work, we know how lucky we could be if our polish last  a good three days without chipping, even after getting cloves for the kitchen, bathroom and anywhere else you may have to use them.

I have questioned though, are the gel no chip manicures here to save us or destroy us? Surely they are better that acrylic nails which often damages nails. Application of the polish involves use of UV light to dry the gel on our nails. Dr Chris Adigun, from New York University School of Medicine, said the UV lamps damage the skin cells in much the same way as sunbeds.

‘Women who frequently get gel manicures should consider their skin cancer risk,’ he said. While specialists argue that the UV light used is too little to cause any harm, overuse of it increases the risk.

Removal of the polish involves soaking in acetone. This causes dryness and makes your nails brittle. Make sure your manicurist is doing it right. They should wrap the nail in acetone soaked foil not dipping the whole nail into the acetone. While gel polish has been marketed as the most convenient way to give a glossy, chip-free nails look, their long use maybe harmful. A preventive measure is to slather some sunscreen on the hands before the manicure.

So do we stay away from the procedure completely? It is advisable to use the treatment only for special occasions but not every three weeks when the nail grows.

Some of the gel nail polishes contain a chemical called methyl acrylate which can cause an allergic skin reaction, called contact dermatitis. Wherever the chemical comes into contact with the skin, a rash may develop. Because we inadvertently touch our eyes throughout the day, the rash can also involve our eyelids. The rash from methyl acrylate is usually red, itchy, bumpy and uncomfortable. It may last a week or two. Removing the polish and treating the skin with a cortisone cream will clear the rash.
The chemical, butylated hydroxyanisol (BHA), which is considered a cancer-causing agent, is found in some gel nail polishes. Although we do not know exactly how much exposure you would need for cancer to develop, it’s important to be aware of this connection. Not all polishes contain this chemical, so check the ingredient list.
Gel nail polish is set or cured with ultraviolet light. Think of the light as baking the polish into the nails. The problem is that ultraviolet light is essentially sunlight and sunlight causes skin cancer. If you are exposed to ultraviolet light for four to eight minutes every two weeks when you have a gel manicure, that can add up to significant exposure. To avoid potential skin cancers on your fingers or hands, I suggest that you apply an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen to directly your hands and fingers after you wash your hands midway through the manicure. Then wear tightly woven cotton gloves with the tips of the fingers cut off. Another alternative is to find a manicurist that uses LED (light emitting diode) light to set the gel polish. We don’t think that this type of light will cause skin cancer.
To remove gel polish, your nails are soaked in or wrapped in acetone. Acetone is a very drying chemical and will cause your nail to become brittle and peel after repeated use. Massaging a moisturizer into you nails several times each day will help to combat the dryness.
As with acrylic nails, the surface of your nail is usually abraded or roughed with an emery board, before gel polish is applied. This will weaken your nail and lead to breakage and the possibility of infection.

The Super Falcons on Thursday qualified for the knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

The Falcons have reached the knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup just once before now, a quarter-final appearance in the competition in the United States in 1999.

They will confront former champions Germany in the last 16 of the 2019 Women’s World Cup in Grenoble on Saturday.

The Falcons qualified as one of the best losers to the round of 16 after finishing third in Group A behind France and Norway but had to endure a torrid time before confirming their place in the last 16 of the event.

The African champions had ended their Group A campaign with three points, courtesy of a 2-0 win over Korea Republic and losses to former champions Norway (3-0) and hosts France (1-0).

But they had to wait three days later after their final group game on Monday to know their fate.

And the Nigerians were almost left frustrated after Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses beat New Zealand 2-1, meaning they (Falcons) had to slip from third on the best third-placed teams table, to fourth.

A 3-0 win for Chile over Thailand would have ended the Falcons dreams of qualification but having led 2-0, the South Americans lost a penalty late on in dramatic fashion to hand the Nigerians a spot in the knockout stage.

Cameroon also qualified as one of the third best-placed teams, thus making it the first time two Africans will reach the knockout stages of the competition.

In 2003, 2007 and 2011, the African Champions were knocked out of the tournament at group stages.

Meanwhile, it was mixed feelings for the Falcons as the final group games took place.

One of the counts reads: “That you Akhibge Gabriel (a.k.a Mathew Aswan, Mathew Chang , David Wong, Richard Swan and Mark Peter) sometime between 2018 and 2019 at Uromi within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fraudulently impersonate the identity of one Michael Chan by sending an American picture to Candy Selfie a lady in America through the internet which picture and identity you claim to be our own with the intent to obtain money from her, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 22 (2)(b)(ii) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition Prevention etc) Act, 2015 and punishable under Section 22 (2)(b)(IV) of the same Act”.

Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Yobe North Constituency on Tuesday, emerged as President of the 9th Senate.

He was born on January 12, 1959 in the Gashua town of Yobe State.

Lawan completed his primary education at Sabon Gari Primary School, Gashua in 1974 and then attended Government Secondary School, Gashua where he got his O’Level in 1979.

He proceeded to the University of Maiduguri where he obtained a Bachelors degree in Geography, in 1984.

Lawan obtained a Master’s degree in Remote Sensing from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a Doctorate degree in Remote Sensing/GIS from Cranfield University, UK, in 1990 and 1996 respectively.

Lawan had worked in the Yobe state civil service as an Education Officer in the Ministry of Education from 1985 to 1986. He then got a teaching job at the University of Maiduguri, where he lectured for 10 years from 1987 to 1997.

In 1999, Lawan was elected into the House of Representatives, where he chaired such committee as House Committees on Education and Agriculture.

In 2007, Ahmad Lawan was elected a Senator on the platform of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP).

In 2009, as chairman of the Senate committee on Public Accounts, he initiated and sponsored the Desertification Control Commission Bill.

In 2011, Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan won a second term as Senator representing Yobe North Senatorial District and was re-elected on the platform of the ANPP.

In the 2015 general elections, he won a third term in office under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was Majority Leader till the 8th Senate was dissolved.

In 2019, Lawan won a fourth term also on the APC platform.

On Tuesday June 11 after the Senate Presidency election, Clerk to the National Assembly, Sani Omolori, declared Lawan as the winner.

He said: “107 cast their votes. Lawan polled 79 votes while Senator Ali Ndume (his main challenger) polled 28 votes of total 107 votes cast.

“On this strength, Lawan is hereby elected as Senate President.”

Lawan, a Muslim, is married with children and holds the traditional titles of Dan Masanin Bade and Garkuwan Daliban Gamui.

He is a recipient of the National Honour of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

The governorship candidate of the Action Alliance in Imo State, Uche Nwosu, has advised the state governor, Emeka Ihedioha, to stop chasing shadows and start working on his plans for the state.

Nwosu, who was Ihedioha’s closest rival during the last governorship election said that the actions of the governor since he was sworn in showed that he was not prepared for leadership.

Nwosu,who addressed journalists in Owerri, the state capital on Wednesday, alleged that the governor was only “chasing shadows.”

Nwosu said, “The people of Imo State did not vote for him to start chasing shadows. For the time he will stay as the governor, he should unfold his plans and programmes for the people. No one is interested in excuses. What the people want is performance and nothing less.

“The people want concrete statement on what the programmes of the government are, what the government intends to do and how it would deliver dividends of democracy to them and not embarking on a mission to pull down Rochas Okorocha.

“Suspension of Local Government Chairmen and their Councilors, dissolving the recently-inaugurated boards of government agencies and parastatals and scrapping of recently established tertiary institutions, are definitely the wrong way to start for a government that wants to make headway. One would have expected that by now, the governor would have engaged the civil servants and tell them what he has for the workers, as well as take up from where his predecessor stopped.

“The acrimonies that could arise from these actions are hardly what Ihedioha needed at this time, he should rather consolidate on the achievements of his predecessor and that is what Imolites want to see. He should concentrate on the business of governance. If I were the governor today, I would definitely hit the ground running, knowing that there is a job to do.”

When contacted, the Special Adviser, media, to the state governor, Steve Osuji said Ihedioha “does not want to be distracted.”

The governor’s spokesperson said, “We don’t want to be distracted by the immediate past governor and his cronies. Apart from not handing over, the immediate past government has continued to unleash their media thugs against the state government.”

“Imagine starting work without a handover note. There is no office for the governor to operate from. The immediate past administration claims that it left a huge amount of money, yet there are no proofs. We don’t want to be distracted.”
