Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima’s chef, John Achagwa,  yesterday committed suicide inside the Government House, Maiduguri. Achagwa was seen hanging lifeless on a tree inside the Government House.

Some of his colleagues told journalists that he had maintained unusual quietness when he resumed for work on Monday. “He didn’t utter a word since morning. He just kept to himself. We were together till about 2pm until he suddenly disappeared,” one of them said.

Men of the State Fire Service and security personnel at the Government House were immediately mobilised to the scene to bring down the victim from the tree. His corpse has been since taken to the mortuary of the State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mohammed Aliyu, said his command had begun investigation into the incident.

Shettima, in a statement by his spokesman, Isa Gusau, expressed shock, wondering what kind of depression could make John, “who was generally known to live comfortably,”  resort to taking his own life. “Governor Kashim Shettima is deeply shocked by the unfortunate incident especially given the fact that John who looked in mid 60s was publicly known to be one of the Governor’s favourites as he served important guests at the Presidential lodge for more than 30 years.

When John retired from civil service, Governor Shettima had requested that he be retained as casual staff because of his good services and the confidence in him. “The governor even supported John with personal funds with which he used in completing his beautiful house at a good location like Polo in Maiduguri. John also had a car to himself and he lived very comfortably.

He was known to be friendly. The governor has since directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure thorough investigation including carrying out a post mortem on his corpse and digging questions everywhere to establish what pushed him to take his own life,” Gusau said.

he Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Gombe Zonal Office has secured the conviction of one Paschal Omorodion before Justice Muhammad Sambo of a Bauchi State High Court on a one-count charge bordering on theft.



The EFCC had received a petition from one Ahmed Babankaratu dated November 9, 2018 alleging that N2 million was fraudulently withdrawn from his bank account.

Investigations by EFCC operatives, unravelled the involvement of Paschal and one David Alabi currently at large.

The charge reads: “That you, Paschal Omorodion and David Okhumeode Alabi (now at large) sometimes in October 2018, at Bauchi within the Jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly transfered the sum of N2,000,000 (Two Million Naira only) property of Ahmed Shehu Babankaratu from his account domiciled at UBA PLC to GTB PLC in the name of Adetunji Samuel Babatunde and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 286 (1) and Punishable under Section 287 (1) of the Penal Code Law.”

Based on the weight of evidence presented against him by the EFCC, Paschal chose not to waste the time of the Court, as he pleaded “guilty” to the charge.


Prosecuting counsel, Zarami Muhammad, thus urged the court to convict him as charged.

“The amount in question which is N2 million was totally recovered from him and same was restituted to the nominal complainant,” Zarami added.

After listening to the allocutus of Paschal’s counsel, Justice Sambo pronounced him guilty and sentenced him to three years imprisonment.

However, he was granted an option of N60,000 as fine.

Friday May 17, 2019 one of the 276 schoolgirls abducted by terrorists in Northern Nigeria in 2014, Palmatah Mutah, has earned an associate degree from a community college in the United States of America.

Her graduation day came 5 years, one month and three days after the ignoble mass abductions that sparked global outrage and ignited the #bringbackourgirls campaign.

The 23-year-old who escaped that fateful April night by jumping out of a Boko Haram truck becomes the first escaped Chibok girl to obtain an associate degree from an institution abroad.

Many Nigerians were shocked most of the 57 Chibok students who escaped could not speak English although they were final year secondary school students.

However Mutah proved to be an exceptional candidate and after just one year in a two-year programme in the US meant to enable them complete their high school education, she took a Community College entrance exam and passed.

She was the only one out of 10 Chibok girls sponsored to school in the US by international human rights lawyer Emmanuel Ogebe to make it to Community College within the first year of arrival.

In January 2016, Mutah along with two other non-Chibok victims of terror and persecution from northeast Nigeria, who had also successfully passed the entrance exams, began their academic sojourn in a Community College in Washington metro area.

One of the three gifted schoolgirls who was orphaned by Boko Haram in Maiduguri graduated last year with an associate degree in Science while Mutah also obtained her associate degree in science.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), Benin Zonal office, has arrested four officials of Port Health Service of the Federal Ministry of Health, Benin City, the Edo State capital over e-yellow fever travel card racketeering.

They were arrested in a sting operation, sequel to a petition in which the petitioner alleged that her aged mother who was to travel to Europe visited the Benin Office of Port Health Service to procure the e-yellow fever travel card, but rather than lead her through the proper procedure, she was convinced to pay N10,000 to obtain the card instantly.

However, trouble began at the time of boarding her flight at the Muritala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, when it was discovered that her e-yellow card did not have the Remita Retrieval Receipt Reference Identity.She was subsequently compelled to get a proper one at the airport with the sum of N2000.Based on the petition, the Benin Zonal Office of the EFCC sent two operatives to Port Health Service office in Benin, who pretended to have genuinely requested for e-yellow fever card.Unaware that they were EFCC operatives, the Port Health Service staff requested for N7000 as payment for each card.

On payment of the amount, the EFCC operatives were issued with the cards instantly. The e-yellow fever travel card is officially N2000.The illicit transaction made EFCC operatives swoop on Port Health Service office on Tuesday morning arresting four of its official.The arrested officials would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are completed.

The share price of MTN on Nigeria’s bourse soared by 21 per cent in two days, closing at N108.90 on Friday.The telecommunications giant, which is the only one listed in the sector by the Nigerian Stock Exchange gained the maximum 10 per cent each on the two days of trading. It was initially listed at N90 on Thursday.

Traders said the stock was in hot demand, with 48,358, 699 units, valued at N5,528,049,931 exchanging hands on Friday. On Thursday 5.5million shares of the company were sold for N545.6 million.The listing of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc 20.35 billion shares lifted the market capitalisation by N1.83 trillion on Thursday.

The stocks have now passed the N2 trillion mark. The interest in the stock was not dampened, even with the news that the company had signed a N200 billion loan agreement with a consortium of banks, for a seven year tenor.Citibank will act as coordinator of the loan and Quantum Zenith will act as Facility Agent in the loan provided by seven Nigerian banks.

Ferdi Moolman, MTN CEO in Nigeria said the Medium Term Facility would enable MTN to fund its evolving business opportunities while assisting with capital expenditure and working capital to deliver enhanced customer service.

It followed the successful establishment of a similar 7-year N200 billion facility by MTN in 2018 and formed part of the company’s wider programme to raise domestic debt, he said.
