Nigerians always tend to think all we need to do is simply to export more than we import. Such resolution is too vague to be understood. What do we really mean by more export than import? This is prevalent on the screens, papers and forums like this. Well, it is good we are talking about this. At least, it will wake that thinking giant in us. Though I am not an economist, I believe whenever we are talking of 'more export than import' we should always consider the clause 'adding more value'. I am of the opinion that we are already exporting much goods but we are just doing it the wrong way. The solution to strengthening the naira is not necessarily to re-denominate the naira or close our borders. Instead we should stop unnecessary exportation of our raw produce and make sure we add value by processing/refining them into finished products before exporting such. Belgium has already advised Nigeria on this. This is where the Nigerian government supposed to be very tough if we are to move forward. There is no reason why we should be exporting most of our crude oil, cocoa, maize, etc if we can actually turn them into fuel, beverages, and cornflakes before exporting. In doing this, we would earn more forex than we would have if we simply exported in their raw state. Again, we must also know that no country is an island in itself. We must strengthen our economic ties with other countries for easier penetration. If we are talking of exportation, we should also realized that other countries also need where to export to. Now, that brings us to importation. Importation in itself is not a bad thing but we have made it look like a 'no go area'. Importation can actually help to boost our economy if we do it in the right way. Let us say, for example, our soil is not good for growing apples. In this case, nothing stops us from importing apples from other countries and adding value to it by processing it into more valuable products. We, in turn, can now export these products to other countries in exchange for much more forex than we spent in importing apples. We cannot deny that there are those goods that we will not be at an advantage producing them in our country. That is why countries cooperate with each other. Therefore, no matter how much we fight importation of a good, we cannot succeed in it until there is a reliable and cheap enough substitute. That does not mean our borders should be left so porous that our goods do not even have a chance to breath. I mean our goods should be of high quality! Or how else is it supposed to compete favourably in other countries? I have heard some Nigerians talk about been nationalistic with regard to consumption. This is never going to solve our economic problems because the man with money will purchase whatever he likes. The bottom line is this: export finished goods, import raw materials, concentrate on your areas of advantage, and our economy will boom. |

Guess what you know; know what you guess. Welcome to 2017. |
Investment wise, the year was a good one for me. I made 100.8% gain trading stocks and it happened to be my first year of active trading. Though my trading capital is currently a small amount, I intend to grow it aggressively by trading purely stocks. Well, I'm not a novice in this market. I have followed the market for over ten years now but I still have a lot to learn hence my happiness to have found a forum of this kind. I still have to sharpen my execution skills because I think I'm still failing a little there and it actually cost me a lot of money. If not I should have been looking at between 150% - 200%. I thank you all for your very useful contribution. #THE NEW BUFFETT# |
What are the conditions one has to fulfil in order to get a seat on the board of a listed company? |
Now is the best time to buy UCAP. Strictly for discerning investors. |
I received an invitation to attend an interview at Custodian House, 16A Commercial Avenue, Sabo, Yaba, Lagos. But I don't know how to get there from Mile 2. I will appreciate any help towards the road description and the possible cost of transport. |

What do the US and UK want from us? They must leave us alone and go and fix their own faulty political system, economic and insecurity problems and corruption. I mean, they have so much problems weighing them down and yet they can't help poking their nose into our internal affairs. Thank you US and UK for your concern but we hate foreigners intruding into our internal affairs unvited. We are a free and independent people, so you can't teach us how to handle our own matters. Like I said before, go and fix your own problems. From all indication, it is clear we are quite more intelligent than you are. In no time, we will definitely outpace you, whether you like it or not. No matter the secret politics you play in our country, we will still unravel it. You cannot hope to achieve a disruption in our economic transformation neither can you cause a disintegration among us as a people. We do not also need a godfather, we are our own godfather. Thank you for reading. |
I appreciate all the comments. Thank you. These comments are really helping me to think coherently and devise a career path much more easily. Once again, I say thank you all. |
Nwogeh:I don't know if I will be good in lecturing and again, lecturers always complain of low pay. A lot of them seem to me like an unhappy people. I feel they have so much to do and don't have time for themselves. Really, some look so unkept and unappealing. I think it sound great and honourable to be addressed as a professor but I wouldn't want to suffer such fate. |
hcdpartners:Thanks. |
@Nwogeh and hcdpartners I appreciate your advice. But what master's degree are you suggesting. MBA seems to be the only option open to me. |
@hcdpartners Thank you for removing this needle from my butt. That's exactly what I will do. I will like to consider a career in investment management or human resources. What would you advice me do in order to upgrade? Thanks in advance. |
I appreciate your comments guys. Thanks a lot. The problem is that when I tell people that I am studying English, they usually give me the impression that it is useless. Again, many employers including some government agencies usually place age restriction on entry level jobs. Something like 'you must be under 26 to be eligible to apply'. I mean, all these make me to fear what the future holds. |
Thanks for your comments. You mean my age will not be a problem if I go for a masters say MBA? |
Pls, fellow Nairalanders, I need your advice. I graduated with a very weak 2:1 in English and Literature this year. I am having the feeling that my chances of landing a good job is very slim because of the course I studied coupled with the fact that age is against me. I'm approaching 29 and by the time I complete youth service I will be approaching 30. I feel like reducing my age and starting all over again by studying a management science course but I fear there might be repercussion. What do you advice me to do? |
