I have been a family member of this group to years and what I have found most interesting about this forum is it's educative and/or enlightenment opportunity it offers.

Yesterday, a thread was opened which discussed the way and manner Immigrants are being extorted, most especially, at the Lagos and Abuja International Airports. One cogent thing that I learnt about the thread is that the first-time travellers are more evenurable to the Airport Officials illegal activities even though some argued that giving anything to these officials is by choice ESPECIALLY WHERE IMMIGRANTS TRAVELING DOCUMENTS ARE VALID AND COMPLETE.

This is where I need your guidance.

I will be travelling out of the country for the very first time by next month. Therefore, I need guidance on two things:

1. For someone that is travelling on invitation base on medical ground, what are the valid travelling documents that the person needs to have to make it COMPLETE? This information is needed in ensuring that my travelling agents did a thorough job regarding my travelling papers.

2. I have taken my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and my second dose is scheduled for 19th of this month. Once these doses are taken, do I still need to take another vaccine before my departure again or I only need to do another COVID-19 test? If it is the latter, between what Internal/period do I need to do the test, where and at what cost?

MY OPINION ON THE PROPOSED TAXATION OF CHURCHES BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

In Nigeria, people's opinion are more driven by sentiment rather than objectivity particularly on issue of religion dimension and I can say that the Muslim and Christian faithfuls are often guilty of. I for one have long hold the believe that in this country of ours (Nigeria), people have used religion as an instrument of deception than good. This is why I tell whosoever cares to listen that I am neither a christian or muslim, I am a Chrislam by religion. And before you ask me say, 'which one be Chrislam again'? I have a right to serve the Almighty God in whatever name, way and manner I chose to and only him (God Almighty) knows who is truly serving him. That settled.

Long before now, there are been arguments back and forth on the activities of Churches particularly in the area of them paying taxes to the government. Once again, this issue made headline in most of the National Daily Newspapers last week. And trust the popular and ever vocal presiding bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide David Oyedepo. The Pastor in his usual style, told his large congregation last Sunday of his total disapproval of the application of the Company and Allied Matters Acts (CAMA) on churches by the Federal Government. He buttressed his arguments on the fact that the “church is God’s heritage on earth” and that it works “on the pattern delivered by God not the pattern of man.' And before you could say Jack Robbinson, his utterances got the attention of the social media aide of President Muhammed Buhari, Lauretta Onochie. The media aide lambasted Oyedepo asking him to go and 'manufacture his own country and live by his own laws.' She further stated that, as long as he (Oyedepo) lives and operates within the entity called Nigeria, he (Oyedepo) will live by Nigerian rules and laws. He will do as he's told by the lawFace with rolling eyes. Enough of lawlessness. She concluded by revealing that 'OYEDEPO'S CHURCH IS REGULATED IN THE UK BY THE GOVT'S CHARITY COMMISSION. But he (Oyedepo) promotes lawlessness by bullying d Nigerian govt. She concluded by sharing the below information about Winners Chapel International to buttressed her point that Winner Chapel do pay tax in UK so why not do the same in his home country, Nigeria?

Foremost, I wish to emphasize one thing. Bishop Oyedepo may be the very vocal type particularly on issues that has to do with Churches and Government. But, what I know for sure is that whenever the bishop talks, I have the strong believe that he's speaking for other (Pentencostal) Churches. In fact, I see Oyedepo as the vuvuzela of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN). So whenever I see him being lambasted for sharing his view on national issues, I really do pity him. Oyedepo is indeed a very strong man. religious sentiment apart.

On the issue at hand, both Government and Oyedepo are very correct in their opinion. A country will always have issue of this nature when there is FISCAL INBALANCE. In a sane country, every entity (government, business, non-government organisation, religious organisations, clubs, societies etc) are well structurally defines and captured under the relevant revenue net of the country. There should be no ambiguity whatsoever in defining the nature of every entity, nature of their registration, income/revenue/profit definition, identification and taxation etc. When this is perfected, it becomes easy to administered every entities in a country.

In other not to bore my reader with much to read, I wish to recommend as below:

1, The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) should be primarily responsible for the registration of all Churches in Nigeria. Every church, Pentecostal or not, should be under the strict supervision of CAN which include but not limited to the filing of their Financial Statement as it may be appropriately determined. EVERY PRIMARY INCOME OF THE CHURCH SHOULD BE TAX EXEMPTED. In other words, every income realized by a church in the primary course of its church activities should NOT be tax by the government. But, where a church has some members (citizen) in its 'employment' and such a member earns remuneration of any form (salary, bonus, allowance etc) such an income should be appropriately taxed in line with the Personal Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2011 - PITA. In this case, it is the Church member's income that is being tax and not the Church as an entity.


2. Where a Church decides to invest its money in EXTRA ORDINARY ACTIVITIES like establishing an educational institution, Banking, Insurance, Pure water, Baking, Guest House etc such an entity should be registered with the Corporate Affair Commission and regulated under the Company and Allied Matters (Amendment) Act 2018. As such, any money realized by such a church In form of income, revenue, profit should be considered as SECONDARY INCOME and appropriately taxed under the Company Income Tax (Amendment) ACT 2020. Note also that every individual who is under the employment of such an entity shall have his/her earned income (salaries, bonus, allowances etc) tax appropriately under PITA 2011.
The above template should also be used for other religious faith in the country.

It is never too late to review some of the existing laws (political and/or socio-economic) in the country for further strengthening. But, truth be told, this is what happens when the church mix religion with politics..

Dear Fresh Graduates, after series of semester tests and examinations, finally, you are now a graduate. Accept my congratulations! As you however await your much anticipated National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) programme, it simply means your quest towards serving your fatherland is very much underway. My dear ‘Ajuwaya’, let the truth be told, being a corps member is much more than the paparazzi and fun that many graduates like you (perhaps) believed to be. In a nutshell, you must get yourself organize so as to make the best out of your service year. I have therefore painstakingly highlighted here few things that you should use as your guiding principle as you prepare yourself for the journey of serving your fatherland:

1. As you travel for the orientation camp, do not join a commercial vehicle that is fully chartered by corps member like you. Without being pessimist, I hold strong reservation towards this and my reason is simple: excitement among colleagues can create unnecessary distraction to everyone in the vehicle most importantly the driver. Hence, road mishap can be timely and necessary prevented by mere psychological test;

2. Watch out and participate in any educational, professional courses or training programme that could add value to your curriculum vitae while at the orientation camp;

3. At your place of primary assignment (PPA), avoid unnecessary travelling. In summary, always stay at the right place at the right time;

4. Start your registration (even if you don’t have the plan of writing the exam during the service year) with a choice of professional body like ICAN, CIPM, ANIM etc. Being a student of a professional body can add value to your virgin CV (abi u get real work experience as a fresh graduate?);

5. Start studying towards writing professional examination during your service year. Buy and pack along with you available textbooks and other materials for your studying pleasure. Doing this will boost your confidence and level of preparedness towards writing the professional examination at the end of your service year. I am a living testimony. With all humility, I did not write all my ICAN paper/exam twice before qualifying!

6. If you are opportune to get a job at your serving state (particular at any northern state), my advice is that you should hold grip of it! Don’t waste such golden opportunity with the wild believe of coming home to get a job. Don’t be brain wash my dear; down here graduates are scampering for the available few jobs. Wise up please!

7. Don’t reject any posting to school as your PPA. I have heard comment like, “I don’t want to teach ooo’’; “I don’t want to be posted to school because I don’t like teaching”; bla…b bla…. Bla….. Listen: Teaching build your confidence of public speaking! In addition, It helps you to keep your knowledge in ‘form’ at all time. These qualities will help you at your first job interview after your service year. You can quote me;

8. Listen: Being a graduate now simply means less financial support from your parents, family and well wishers. You must now learn to be financially independent and nothing is too small to start with. Therefore, start saving from your little allawee! People like us started good life with the little we were able to save from our little allawee. So don’t chop life finish with your monthly allawee but save little out of it! And remember that, the only true help is SELF-HELP;

9. Build an entrepreneurial spirit. Planning to be your own CEO should top your list of priority. Engage yourself in any vocational training that you have passion for. Job search should be your plan B and not A. With this thought, you won’t have to fight the battle of ‘no job’ after service.
10. Be faithful to your partner! This may sounds hilarious but it is a bitter truth. Corps member engage in a lot of social immoralities all in the name of enjoying NYSC. Yet, I have seen and read corps members who ended their service with beautiful stories of meeting their soul mate. Different strokes for different folks. Whatever relationship you may find yourself during your service year; please don’t you forget the golden rule- be faithful and act responsibly;

11. Let your parents, siblings, friends and well wishers eat their fruit of labour in you. Do you remember all those people that you acknowledged in your school project with those sweet words for their financial and moral support towards your education? Good! Now is the time to give back to them in kind and cash!;

12. Develop the power of positive thinking: By the end of your service, alot of negative thought will fill your membrane particularly on job search. Stay positive. No matter the struggle for job search and survival after service you will not be found wanting. You must believe in yourselvf and your dream. If others can still make it despite all the challenges, you will not be an exception. Your success stories must also be heard. No matter the odds, just believe in yourself; you will make it because I believe in you!

"Giving room for human being to determine what you become in life or the role of God in your life, make you to be a servant to them”. “Please don't depend on human being they will fail you and disappoint you, put all your hope and believe in most high God that will not disappoint you”. The above quotes were culled from the Facebook wall of a friend of mine who I have chosen not to disclose his name. However, I strongly believe that he will after reading this piece accept the bitter truth in it after all he has also shared in one of his recent posts that, “Truth is bitter and hard to believe but never shy away to say the truth always , some will take it and some will fight you”. Foremost, I need to emphasis that my friend present predicament is JOB. He needs a new job having lost his last job few years back. As a friend, I have tried in my little way to ‘teach him how to fish’ and not ‘giving him a fish’. But, from my friend’s body language, it appears he prefers being given a fish and that of which is against my life philosophy. ‘Why this piece’, I can hear you saying. You see, the greatest mistake that people often make in life is the attitude of holding people around them responsible for their failures or predicaments. We never look inward to hold ourselves accountable for our (in) actions.

From the two opening quotes of this piece, one could easily read the mind of my friend-blaming people around him for his inability to secure a new job yet. But, my friend has refused to learn ‘how to fish’ and this is the missing like which he is yet to bridge. Let me share with you those few things that my friend is still getting wrong and in which he has failed to hold himself accountable for:

1. UN-UPDATED ‘CV’: Since my friend graduated from school with an HND (Accounting) in the year 2009 (or so), he has refused to add more certificate to his ‘CV’. I keep telling those who care to listen that, HND or B.sc is like school cert. in the Nigeria labour market of today, getting a job out of the little ones available, requires much more than just an HND or B.sc. If you are seeking for job with the same ‘CV’ for like 4 or 5 years, the sad news is that, your chance is very slim.

2. LUCRATIVE JOB: In Nigeria today, I am yet to experience the job that is very lucrative. Many job seekers are always looking for the so called lucrative job. In all honesty, lucrative job do exist and we all deserve one. But, with the current economic reality (recession) that people are losing jobs, it is therefore a simple wisdom that any available job is as good as being lucrative after all, survival is what matters most.

3. EGO: With my experience in the educational sector and publishing industry, school business offers job opportunity the most even though the remuneration may not be that ‘high’ as expected. But, yet you will hear many job seekers saying things like, “No, I can’t teach”. “Why should I be teaching after all, I am an Accountant”. “No I can’t teach because schools don’t pay ‘big’ salary” etc. You have forgotten so soon that an idle hand is the devil’s workshop.

4. ENTERPRENEURSHIP: Believe me, before now; I belong to the school of thought that believes that not everybody is cut-out to do business. But, my vast reading culture and exposure has changed my orientation about this. I have long realized that being one’s boss is the best! Yes, I am in a paid employment today but with all humility I have set up a business that I can always fall back to any day, anytime should in case of any eventuality. That is my golden insurance.

5. NETWORKING: In our local parlance, we all know that getting job in Nigeria of today ‘na who know who’. The question therefore is, ‘who do you know’? Take a stock count of who your friends are; not in quantity but quality! Are the people or friends around you are the types that can perhaps get you connected (possibly) for a job? You cannot sit down in your living room and expect to be connected. You need to stand up, move around and meet (new) people that can get you connected.

6. SELF-HELP: There is an anonymous that says, ‘the only true help is self-help’. If you are one person that has run afoul of any of the above points, you are truly not helping yourself. Stop blaming people around you for your present situation. You need to do something different. Only a fool will continue to do a thing the same way and expect a different result. If you have been doing something in the time past and yet no positive result, perhaps it is time for you to do it differently; add more flavor! Your present jobless situation should not make you believe less in yourself.

Conclusively, this piece is not about my friend alone but someone out there who may be passing through the same situation. Gold or silver I have none but, here is what I can and will always share with you gladly.

“Okay. I just get you a job opportunity”
“You mean am”! Feeling much excited, “ Na for which company abeg”?
“It’s one advertisement company around Ikeja. They are presently looking for an Account Officer”
“Abeg, how much be their salary my guy”?

The above is the telephone conversation between two bosom friend, John and Paul. From the conversion, one could easily pick that job opportunity is their main topic of discussion. And typical of an average job seeker, the primary information that John (the supposed job seeker) could asked about the job opportunity is the remuneration. Without mincing word, globally, remuneration has been identified to be one of the major determinants of job satisfaction. However, it is regrettable to say that this priority has often times been misplaced by job seekers. Particularly in Nigeria, many job seekers have severally shot themselves at the leg as a result of always looking for the big pay job. I have painstakingly highlighted below some other factors that job seekers should better consider instead of always considering ‘big’ pay:

1. Job Experience: It is hilarious to see fresh graduate in Nigeria always searching for the jobs with big pay when in actual fact they has little or no job experience required of the job. No one crave to build his/her CV with qualitative job experience anymore. Graduates should realize that no one climbs the ladder from the top. Getting the big pay job shouldn’t be a sprint race. They must learn to build their job experience by taking up the jobs with a less pay.

2. Job Security: I know of a professional colleague who got a lucrative job (N6.5m p.a remuneration package) some few years back and only to lose the job two months after. Reason? The company went into liquidation! This picture only paints that not all the big pay jobs guarantee job security. You must be very very very careful!

3. Probation Period: Truth be told, not all job’s total remuneration package are being disclosed at the time of interview. Some job appear not to be lucrative on the face value. Some company have the policy of revealing and giving total job package (remuneration and allowances) after probation period. The essence is to enable them have a feel or assessed their staffs on-the-job competency which may not be properly known at the point of interview. Don’t be tempted to asses every job on the face value

4. Performance: This is an addendum to the point 3 above. Performance is very important. Getting a job at times gives you the golden opportunity to show your employer what you’ve got! You need to prove to your employer why you are the best candidate for the job and you’ve got the probation period to achieve this! Proving your job competency perhaps during the probation period may fast track your job confirmation and salary re-negotiation (who knows? After all, your employer now has a ‘taste’ of you and may not be willing to let you slip off their pay roll). With all humility, I once worked with a company where my salary was reviewed upward twice within a year. You need to prove to your employer that ‘Obe to dun, owo l’opa (Soup wey sweet na money kill am). Don’t over flog this quality of you.

5. Job Satisfaction: There are some big pay jobs that may still not give you the complimentary job satisfaction. You must admit this. Sharing from my personal experience, I once voluntarily resigned from a big pay job due to job insatisfaction. You need to be happy on your job and this is one factor that no amount of money can buy!

6. Career Development: Remuneration is a relative term when you compare what is obtainable from company to company. What a clerk receives as salary in company ‘A’ may be what a manager is receiving in company ‘B’. Employees seek for career growth. Employees expect promotion on their job and when this is not forth coming as expected, job insatisfaction sets in. In so doing, employees may be tempted to take up a new job that although may result into a lower remuneration (considering their last one) but offers a higher career development. For more clarity, I know of a friend who resigned as an Account Officer of N2.5m remuneration just to take up another job as an Account Manager of N1.8m with another company. This may sound craze but my friend is very much happy on the job because he sees his career growing (up the organization ladder) faster in the new company.

7. Pension: Some big pay jobs may not be pensionable. This is why every job offer must be properly reviewed before acceptance. I am very sorry to say but this is where I have a strong reservation about some bank jobs in Nigeria. Most employers are always willing to pay you handsomely and only to wave you goodbye upon resignation or termination of your employment. Therefore, if you have not been saving and investing your salaries while in their employment, OYO for you upon your disengagement – little or no gratuity awaits you. Be wise!

I sincerely hope that someone will find this piece useful in his/her your career pursuit. Don’t waste your time on the street looking for the big pay job. You can start from somewhere and trust me, I see you becoming a hot cake for employers in the very near future.
