Yes, the list is detailed. There are others that can do well too in waterlogged ecologies. Mariangeles: |
This is a very accurate, the importance of agriculture and planting of trees is part of our culture that is being lost. Let's promote agriculture esp fruiting farm, even in the urban areas you can plant improved varieties that can do well in buckets and even in cement bags.

whytediamond:We can talk about the pros and cons of Religions' impact in Africa. But according to you at the bolded. Don't you think Africa's issues transcends beyond religion? Africans has sold their people during slave trade even when there were no established foreign religions. This issue of AFRICA IS BEYOND RELIGION, we need to be introspective for real |

Both Red and Green are highly nutritious, both have a high fibre content and are high in antioxidants, and vitamins Any observed difference is as a result of the following: 1. Level of acidity 2. Variety Also your personal preference is important! Also note that both varieties can be grown in Nigeria, Check my Topics to know more |
rainmoredays:I do have testimonials I have being away from this platform for some time now. I will compile some results from farmers soon |
Ade3131:True Thank you for the insight |
lhurd:In this write-up, I am specifically speaking about improved varieties apples that produces high yield and taste even better like the ones that is imported The ones you have seen maybe not be the improved and their size is way smaller than the improved varieties. |
Most of what we will experience in life is not new but we are always not observant to learn this lessons from those who have gone ahead of us |
Welcome to the planting season, planting has begun in earnest!! Let me once again give some background information about the apple Seedling Apples are a popular fruit consumed globally due to their nutrient-dense composition. This fruit is rich in vitamins and minerals, contributing to their benefits to human health. Apples aid in weight loss, reduce the risk of heart disease, help alleviate asthma attacks, and promote memory function, among other benefits. Traditionally, apple cultivation is confined to temperate regions such as Europe, North Africa, USA, and China. This is due to the fruit's requirement for a cold chill of approximately 7oC for five weeks to break dormancy for flowering. However, recent breeding studies by scientists from the Crop and Horticultural Science Department at Mekelle University in Ethiopia have yielded a new apple variety suitable for tropical climates like Nigeria. This variety is now readily available in Nigeria and is capable of producing excellent yields. The apple tree variety begins fruit production at four feet tall, even before transplantation to a permanent site. These trees are easy to manage, similar to any other fruit tree, and can thrive in diverse soil types. Key points: Apples are a popular fruit that is nutrient-dense and beneficial for human health. Jennyclay:I sell apple seedlings and also farm the plant. I can say with confidence that what jennyclay has said is very correct. From taste, nutrient content, shelf life and juice content... Both red apples and green apples have unique difference which she has done well to differentiate. Great one |
5 Misconceptions about apple production in Nigeria Part 1 It's being a while here, many things happened since the last time. But it's good to be back!! I have received so many messages and enquires about production of apple in Nigeria. Some of this questions are from research made about the plant while some others are really just misconceptions. I will be writing about some misconceptions about apple production. Follow me.. 1. The first and by far the most popular misconception is that Apple can't grow in a tropical environment like Nigeria. It could have being true if this was 1950 but not any more. With improvement in plant science and agriculture, varieties that can flower and fruit even in a higher temperature area like ours has being bred, examples are wambugu, Anna, Fuji etc. This varieties can grow, flower and fruit excellently in the Nigerian climate in both the North and South of Nigeria. They will give high yields and can produce for more than 90 years under good management. 2. Another misconception about apple production is that you don't need any management activities like fertilization, pest control, weeding and pruning etc to obtain a good yield. Some people give examples of local fruits that grows and produce without any form of care and management and still produce. But my question to them is: how long does it take to start producing fruits after planting? Some take more than 5 years, some take even 10 years! But with good management on your Apple tree, you can start to get fruits from 2 years and upward. So it's important you give proper management to your plants so you will obtain the best yield from your plants. |
You spoke well bro MrbasHH: |
Hello Everyone It has being quite a while. With the current happenings in the economy of the country. It is obvious that food security is the most paramount issue now. Nigerians spend most of their income on food, and this goes to show it's obvious importance. It now brings me to the issue fruit tree establishment. 1. With fruit trees, you are guaranteed a consistent stream of revenue. 2. It is also a source of food for the farmer and his household as it provides nutrients for healthy body. 3. Fruits trees can serve as an investment strategy, investors can use fruits trees to protect their capital against inflation and taxes |
Hello everyone! It has being awhile now. The season has already started and is far spent. Here are some important points to note in your fruit tree management during this ongoing rainy season. 1. Ensure constant monitoring for pest and disease on your plants. This is because plants are more susceptible to pest and disease attack during the rainy season than the dry season. Preventive and curative chemicals can be used to reduce risk of attacks and tree loss. e.g Redforce, mancozeb, lambda cyhalothrine etc 2. Good weed management around the plants and within the garden/ farm. This is necessary because many harmful pest and some plant disease use this weeds as a host before it is transmitted to the tree. Also this weeds compete with the tree for nutrients and causes tree stunt and low productivity. 3. Fertilizer and manure application: this is essential if you want your tree to do well and produce great fruits. Trees need these nutrients for their growth and development. You can supply inorganic fertilizers like NPK or organic fertilizer like poultry manure, cattle manure or farmyard manure. This helps to supply the necessary nutrients that will keep your plants healthy and productive for many years to come. |

Why Rainy Season is the best time for orchard establishment With the approach of the rainy season, agriculture and farming activities are expected to fully commence. This presents a good opportunity to build an investment in orchard and garden farming. Apple as a tree plant needs water for optimum growth and production. The rainy season therefore offers farmers the opportunity to establish their orchards during this year growing season. The rains eliminate the need for irrigation, mulching and other water conservation practice. it's also help the plants to grow its roots and hence the plant size. The rains also dissolve nutrients like fertilizer and manure that makes uptake easy for plants resulting in increased growth and development of the plants. this season also induces fruit development and flowering in some fruit trees, this makes some fruit to be available to be eaten. It can be conclusively said that the rainy season is the best time to establish your fruit orchard and to carrying out transplant of tree from the nursery to the field. Talk to us for your hybrid fruit trees seedling that are ready for transplant and will start producing my this time next year (March 2022) We have Apple, Strawberry, Fig, Grapevine, Date palm, passion fruit, Avocado, Cedar apple, mango, orange, Guava, etc 09095533412, 07068320962 (WhatsApp) |
Managing Risk in Your Fruit Farm Risk is an enormous subject that is present in every aspect of life. Every area of human endeavors has inherent risks associated with it, ranging from business, investments, finances etc. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Risk can be defined as uncertainties inherent in weather, yields, prices, Government policies, global markets, and other factors that impact farming can cause wide swings in farm income. "Risk management involves choosing among alternatives that reduce financial effects that can result from such uncertainties. This is no different in agriculture, agricultural risks are diverse, complex and persistent in nature. This means that in agriculture you have a variety of factors that can cause loss to your investments."- USDA The good news and most important is that this risk can be well managed resulting in good returns on investments. Risk are generally higher at the beginning of the farm establishment but drastically reduce when the trees have established (2- 3 years). For fruit farm some risk, effects and management are outlined A. Pest and disease attack Effects 1. Loss of seedlings and trees. 2. Revenue loss Management 1. Good farm hygiene 2. Preventive application of pesticides on seedlings B. Theft of seedlings Effects 1. Loss of equipment and seedlings. 2. Damage to property Management 1. fencing of the property 2. Provision of a gate. 3. Employment of security personnel. C. Weather and Agro-ecological risk Effects 1. it can lead to loss of fruit trees and a result of drought 2. Reduced fruit quality due to poor moisture in the soil. 3. Increased susceptibility to disease Management 1. Provision of irrigation facilities for use during periods of low rainfall or drought. 2. Use of water conservation techniques like mulching, cover cropping etc D. Economic and pricing risk Effect 1. Poor return on investment that may affect the capital. 2. Low demand of fruits that may lead to wastage 3. poor prices that may affect profits Management 1. Registering with Cooperatives those members get good prices as a result their influence. 2. Use of good storage facility and good storage practice. 3. Use of digital media to market produce online. This list is my no means exhaustive but a summary of the some notable risk Encountered in growing and managing a orchard.
