Thirty-seven members of the National Youths Service Corps who had just concluded their one-year mandatory national service on Monday were involved in an auto accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The corpers had just left the NYSC orientation camp, Sagamu, after their Passing Out Parade and were travelling to Sango Ota when the driver of the Toyota coastal bus they were travelling in lost control and bus crashed.

The Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Clement Oladele, confirmed the incident.

He said out of the 37 corpers, 19 sustained varying degrees of injury, but none of them died.

Giving a breakdown of the number of the injured, he said nine were males and 10 were females.

He further said that out of the 19 corpers four of them were critically injured.

Oladele said the accident occurred during the downpour, while the driver was speeding.

He said, “It rained this morning. The driver of the coastal bus was speeding and in the process, he lost control and the bus crashed.”

Oladele said the injured victims were treated at the FRSC emergency clinic but the four of them that were critically injured were taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu.

Following the rearrest of ritual suspect, Maxwell Ifeanyi Dike, who escaped from the Police Station he was being detained for cutting off the vital parts of the eight-year-old girl, a Port Harcourt Magistrate court has remanded Sergeant JohnBosco Okoroeze in prison custody for negligence of duty which led to the escape of a ritual suspect.
Sergeant Johnbosco’s case file was also ordered to be handed over to the Department of Public Prosecution, Chief Magistrate, Andrew Jaja, who also remanded him in prison.

A 21-year-old boy has allegedly committed suicide at Tweemu, a fishing community near Moree in the Central Region, Ghana.

Police on Monday said three men died and five remain missing after their boat capsized in a river in central India while they were taking selfies and videos for social mediaThe police said the accident occurred on Sunday evening when a group of 10 men, between 21 and 28 years, were out on a fishing boat on the Vena river near the city of Nagpur.Area police chief Chandrashekhar Bahadure said the boatman rescued two men and three bodies were fished out Monday afternoon.

“During initial investigations, we found that the group was busy taking videos and selfies on the boat that is suspected to have caused the tragedy,” Bahadure said.

“Survivors say the boat lost balance and overturned when a number of men came to one side to pose for either selfies or videos.

“The men had also posted a video on Facebook minutes before the boat tipped over,” he said.

Police said divers and national disaster response force personnel were assisting in the rescue but it was unlikely there would be survivors.India has had the highest number of selfie-related deaths, according to new research.

A female student of the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja, Sandra Musujusu, has developed an alternative treatment for breast cancer, TribuneOnline reports.

The scientific breakthrough might lead to a lasting solution in the treatment of breast cancer prevalent among women world over.

This was made known on Tuesday in Abuja when the World Bank Education Director, Dr Jaime Saavedra Chanduvi with his team visited the University as part of his assessment tour of the 10 African Centres of Excellence (ACE) centres.

The World Bank has committed about $10 billion for the ACE project in Nigeria, as part of efforts to encourage conduct of cutting-edge research and specialisation of the beneficiaries institutions in specific development problems faced in Nigeria and indeed the African continent.AUST, is hosting one of the Centres of Excellence, known as Pan African Material Institute (PAMI), with research focus electrical power, disease detection and treatment.Musujusu, research, using macromolecular science is aimed at developing bio-degradable polymer material which could be used as alternative for the treatment of breast cancer in the near future.

She revealed that her research focuses on triple negative breast cancer which is the aggressive sub-type of breast cancer that is common with women from African ancestry.

musujusu, a Sierra-Ionian national is conducting the research under the sponsorship of the Pan African Materials Institute (PAMI).

Out of 19 African Centres of Excellence, 10 Nigerian tertiary institutions won slots to churn out special research works that could compete effectively with global standards.The ACE universities include Redeemers University, Mowe; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; University of Jos, Jos; University of Benin; and African University of Science and Technology, Abuja.

Others are University of Port-Harcourt; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife; Bayero University, Kano; Benue State University, Makurdi; and Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

It would be recalled that when the Ebola Virus Disease broke out in Nigeria in the year 2014, one of the ACE centres, Redeemers University served as the testing site before it was brought under control. Musujusu said, “My research is actually centred on the development of bio-degradable polymers for treatment of breast cancer.”

A mother, Rhoda Joshua of Karu, has asked a Grade 1 Area Court, Karu, Abuja, to order John Okechukwu, 27, of Nasarawa State to pay her N800,000 damages for allegedly impregnating her 14-year-old daughter.

Joshua told the court on Wednesday that her daughter, who was a Secondary School 1 student in a school in Nasarawa State, had been in a sexual relationship with Okechukwu since 2016.



“My Lord, my daughter has been seeing this guy since last year when she was 13 and as a mother, I noticed she had started having sex with him.

“I warned her and even beat her to stop it but instead of bringing home a result of flying colours, she brought this pregnancy nine months ago.

“I kept cautioning my daughter against the relationship and advised her to face her studies because I am a widow but she told me the guy said he wanted to marry her.

“He impregnated her while she was still in school so she had to drop out and since she took in till now that she will give birth he has never given her even one naira for her or the coming baby.

“I have been the one taking care of her, the pregnancy and her younger one and I have no support from anywhere.

“So, I am pleading with this Court to order him to pay me the sum of N 800, 000 in damages for allowing her to drop out of school because of the pregnancy and for not taking any responsibility since my daughter became pregnant and for refusing to marry her.

“He promised to marry her but since she became pregnant till now that she will soon put to bed, he has refused to even take us to his family members, keep to his promise or take any form of responsibility,’’ Joshua said.


In his response, Okechukwu said he was not ready to get married but would be giving a little sum for the upkeep of the girl.



“My Lord, she will have my baby and that is my responsibility and I will be giving a token toward that.

“Even if I don’t marry her that baby will make our relationship everlasting.

“I am also a student and cannot get married now but I will try and be giving a token for the upkeep of the baby. I am not sure of the future itself,’’ he said.



While responding to a question from the court if she was ready to get married to the respondent, the victim said she was not willing to get married to him.



“I cannot marry him because he did not keep to his words of getting married to me and taking good care of me since I became pregnant rather he denied me and said he can’t marry me.’’



After listening to all involved, the judge, Abdullahi Baba, said the case could only be heard in a customary court.



“The issue brought by the plaintiff before this court is centred on marriage and this can only be determined by a customary court of law.

‘”So, let this case be transferred to the Customary Court in Karu for a proper trial,’’ Baba said.

Five members of a family have died after having a meal in Umuokpara Umanu, Obollo community in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

Mr. Vitalis Nwosu, his wife, Obianuju, and their three children, Chinonso, Chinasa and Odimnobi had eaten jollof rice for dinner served by Mrs Obianuju Nwosu. Soon after eating, they started having stomach pain, stooling and vomiting, Vanguard reports. The children began to experience the symptoms first and they were taken to a hospital but did not make it.

A villager recounted the incident: “The children were the initial complainants and their parents quickly moved them to a nearby private hospital (names withheld). Every effort made to save them failed as they died one after the other.”

Soon after the children died, the parents came down with the same symptoms and were taken to a hospital where they died. Their remains of the deceased have been deposited at Adam Mortuary, Ugiri. Two other members of the family, who joined in eating the meal survived.

Reacting to the incident, the deceased’s first son, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwosu, told newsmen that he was not at home when the incident occurred. Chukwuemeka said that he suspected foul play. He alleged that his parents and siblings must have been poisoned by a relation over a protracted family matter and urged the security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident.

27-year-old Ekanem whose face-off wit his boss, Master Wan was sparked when he refused to show his Boss the content of the bag containing foodstuffs he had bought on the premises of the company sometime in April 2017, was paid Ekanem N3m.
This is coming after Ekanem was taken to Beachland Specialist Hospital, Arepo, before he was admitted to Divine Touch Hospital, Ibafo.

According to Punchng, the company held a meeting on Wednesday with Ekanem, his lawyer and a human rights group, during which it agreed to pay N3m as damages.With the development, the earlier scheduled meeting among representatives of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Chinese company and the major actors in the incident was called off.A source said, “A cheque has been issued in Ekanem’s name.
