Boko Haram, bandits: Army now ration ammunition for soldiers, things are bad – Ndume Borno South Senator, Ali Ndume has alleged that things are so bad within the Nigerian Army. Ndume said the Nigerian Army now rations ammunition for soldiers. Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, the lawmaker said military personnel were lamenting over the lack of funds. Ndume lamented that soldiers no longer carry new AK-47 rifles. He noted that the situation of insecurity had gotten to a stage where citizens negotiate with criminals elements to ensure peace. According to Ndume: “Never in the history of this country has Nigeria been challenged from various angles like this time. It has gotten so bad that in this country of ours, citizens now negotiate with criminals to live in peace. “When we confront the Nigerian army, ‘why are you not performing?’, they will tell us ‘we don’t have money; we only manage with what we have.’ “I interact with the armed forces very regularly. It is so bad that the Nigerian Army is rationing ammunition. Rationing is common. They ration ammunition. I have gone round the formations; I have not seen a Nigerian soldier holding a brand new AK-47 yet.” Boko Haram and bandits have been on the prowl in the Northern part of the country. Several students have been abducted and killed by these terrorist groups. https://dailypost.ng/2021/05/06/boko-haram-bandits-army-now-ration-ammunition-for-soldiers-things-are-bad-ndume/

Revenge-seeking cultists attack OPC men in Ondo, six killed Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Bolaji Salami Six persons lost their lives in a clash between members of the Oodua People’s Congress and some persons suspected to be members of a cult in Owo, headquarters of the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The clash was said to have taken place on Tuesday and it was gathered that the victims were members of the warring groups. The fracas was said to have occurred at Idasen and Ijebu areas of the town. An eyewitness said the incident paralysed social and business activities in the town as residents hurriedly closed their business centres and ran helter-skelter while the violence was going on. The actual cause of the fight had yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, but the eyewitness said the cultists attacked the OPC members to avenge the alleged killing of one of them. When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr Tee-Leo Ikoro, confirmed the incident, but said only two persons were killed and that the command had swung into action to calm the situation. Our men and other security agents have been deployed in the town to restore normalcy. So, we are fully on the ground,” he stated. The Ondo State Coordinator of the OPC, Mr Victor Egbeyemi, confirmed the clash in a telephone conversation with our correspondent and said it would be resolved soon. “We have been talking to our boys and the matter will be resolved,” Egbeyemi stated. The Chairman, Owo Local Government Council, Mr Olabade Adegbegi, said normalcy had returned to the town and warned troublemakers to steer clear of the area, adding that the government would deal ruthlessly with those causing crisis in the area. https://punchng.com/revenge-seeking-cultists-attack-opc-men-in-ondo-six-killed/

Nigeria might break up after 2023 — Obasanjo as Benue leaders seek former President’s support, prominent Nigerians to end orgies of killings By Bankole Taiwo, Abeokuta Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo says leaders must ensure the 2023 birth emergence of a new federation in Nigeria otherwise the country may be “sliding into ground dissolution.” Obasanjo who bemoaned insecurity challenges, insisted that 2023 must mark a watershed for Nigeria. He spoke on Wednesday at his Penthouse residence within Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while playing host to members of Tiv Professionals Group (TPG) led by Prof Zacharys Anger Gundu. “I do believe that whatever else we do we have to make the year 2023 a watershed for Nigeria. The year 2023 should give us the beginning of emergence of a new federation or feeling that the rot continues, and then, we are going to be sliding back to a ground dissolution. God forbid,” the former President said. Obasanjo said he does not believe in payment of ransom to kidnappers and banditry as it encouraged criminals indulging in the act. He specifically noted that President Muhammadu Buhari’s government and that of his predecessor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan had paid ransom to kidnappers and bandits, but denied it. He, however, submitted that the government must develop means to deal with kidnappers and bandits heavily in place of ransom payment. The former President equally insisted that it requires a “carrot and stick” approach to fight insecurity challenges to a standstill. He said “Some people are still reaching out, and hoping that lives can still be saved. But a situation whereby anybody thinks paying ransom is the way out, that person is folly. He is a folly. This is because when you pay ransom, you encourage. But if you are not going to pay ransom, you must have the means to deal heavily with it. You must have the stick to deal with it. “Government has always paid ransom. Not only this government, even during Jonathan (administration). They paid ransom, but they denied it.” While relaying the position of a military friend, Obasanjo expressed fears that those beating drums of division in Nigeria don’t think about the interest of the minority ethnic groups. “And he would say to me if the Yorubas can stand as a country, if the Igbos can stand as a country, if the Hausas/Fulanis can stand as a country, if you major tribes decide to break up from the country, where do you want the minority ethnic groups to stand. That, many Nigerians don’t know about, unfortunately. “Where do we want those minor groups to stand? Wherever they stand, now they are by virtue of Nigeria’s present situation a little bit protected. But if Nigeria breaks up and they are in a smaller country, they will be oppressed. They will always be exterminated. Are we thinking of that? “I believe that if we will get it right in Nigeria, any leader must look at Nigeria through the prism of the diversity of Nigeria. For as long as you look at Nigeria with the prism of your ethnic group, then you aren’t going anywhere, either your ethnic group or religious group. “But is there hope? There is hope.” Presenting a paper earlier, leader of the group, Prof Zacharys Anger Gundu told Obasanjo that “blood is flowing in Benue State” following killings of the people allegedly by fulanis and bandits. He said people are being maimed in their sleep and on their ancestral land, calling on Obasanjo and other influential Nigerians to rise to the occasion to stem the tide of killings. While alleging skewed security architecture, Gundu said, “Nigeria seems to be losing the battle against insecurity.” He, however, demanded that full compensation for the victims of killings and destruction in Tivland, proscription of armed fulani groups, while “land grabbing must stop and all occupied lands must be vacated.” Gundu also called for intensified advocacy against nomadic pastoralism and hosting “all Nationalities Summit” where issues would be discussed with a view to finding lasting solutions. He said, “There are different shades of instability in the country. Nigeria is truly bleeding to death. There’s even a population fault-line which could lead to the ‘Lebanon Trap.’ “All Patriots must stand together; but if others have to be enslaved before the country can survive, we will prefer, as Tiv people, to take our destiny in our hands. https://nigeriannewsdirect.com/nigeria-might-break-up-after-2023-obasanjo/

Hunting for ESN personnel in S’East while bandits sack northern communities, curious’, says former ECOWAS speaker Former Speaker, ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa has queried the reasonability of the security agencies hunting for suspected members of the Eastern Security Network, ESN in South East while bandits and terrorists are sacking communities in the North and taking over their ancestral land almost unchallenged. Senator Ohuabunwa who spoke on the heels of media reports and confirmations by some Northern governors that terrorists have now taken over many communities in the region seizing people’s wives, said “Nigeria is cruising on a highway to abbys.” He said that hunting for suspected personnel of ESN who are resisting the invasion of Eastern communities by bandits and Killer herdsmen while bandits on killing spree occupy territories raises some curious questions. The former Leader of the House of Representatives warned that the current security situation in the country if not properly handled could plunge Nigeria into civil unrest. Senator Ohuabunwa who strongly condemned attacks against security formations in the zone, however, said that indiscriminate arrests of suspected sponsors of unknown gunmen “without proper investigation could make innocent citizens suffer for what they don’t know”. He challenged members of the National Assembly to rise to their constitutional responsibility of oversight functions and call the security agencies to order. Ohuabunwa said the use of excessive force against peaceful agitators while being over soft on real and internationally recognized terrorists cast dark shadow on Nigeria’s global image. I don’t think it makes any sense going after those defending their land against terrorists while being lenient on the same killers decimating indigenous communities and taking over their land. Nigeria should not be seen to be using deodorant against terrorists while using sledgehammer on fellow citizens; it’s not good for our global perception”. Senator Ohuabunwa challenged South East governors and political leaders to stop living in self-denial over the security realities in the zone and the grave implications on the future and survival of Ndigbo. He said that keeping silent in the face of disturbing development is a sign of cowardice which is not a virtue of any good leader. Ohuabunwa who represented Abia North in the eighth senates renewed his call for power devolution and formation of state or regional police which he said would be the panacea to the growing insecurity in the country. He also suggested the immediate convocation of national dialogue of all ethnic nationalities in the country to brainstorm on the way forward, warning that Nigeria might not survive for too long if the current situation is allowed to fester. “We shall all be consumed by the dark cloud unless we all rise to nip it at the bud now”, he warned Senator Ohuabunwa asked South East Governors to immediately convoke a security summit on how to stem the rising wave of insecurity in the zone pending the national dialogue. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/05/hunting-for-esn-personnel-in-seast-while-bandits-sack-northern-communities-curious-says-former-ecowas-speaker/

Again, suspected herdsmen kill 19 people in Benue No fewer than 19 people were reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen who attacked some communities in Gwer West local government area of Benue State between Sunday and Monday. Locals in the area said that the suspected herdsmen invaded some communities early hours of Monday and killed several people while many others were reportedly injured. They added that several houses were also set ablaze by the suspected herdsmen. Residents of Tse Angbeghe and Udam communities have all fled to Aondoana community which is close to Naka, the council headquarters. According to a local who pleaded not to be mentioned, “at about 5 am this morning the attackers who are herdsmen stormed the Tse Amgbem and Udam all near Aondoana community and killed several people and left many others injured. They also burnt down many houses.” Another source said that some suspected herdsmen had earlier on Sunday ambushed some motorcyclists at separate areas on Naka Nagi Agagbe and Naka/Makurdi roads, killing six persons. Chairman of Gwer West local government, Mrs Grace Igbabon who confirmed the separate attacks to the Nigerian Tribune on the phone said that 19 people were killed in three separate attacks in the council area between Sunday and Monday. She said: “We had about six persons yesterday (Sunday) and 13 people today. “I was told that the attackers were suspected Fulani herdsmen who attacked the Mbamodu community and killed 13 people and injured several others. The attackers burnt down several houses in the community. “Other incidents happened on Sunday at another side of Mbachon, some motorcyclists were riding on the road and they saw a man in military uniform who flagged them down. “I was told that in the process of slowing down, another set of people who possibly had laid ambush came out from the bush and shot at them severally, four of them died and one later escaped. Also along Naka/Makurdi road on Sunday, they (suspected herdsmen) killed two others.” When contacted, spokesperson for Benue State Command, DSP Catherine Anene said she heard of the attack on communities near Aondoana but was yet to get details. https://tribuneonlineng.com/again-suspected-herdsmen-kill-19-people-in-benue/amp/
