Jobs/Vacancies › 4 Reasons You Should Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone by insidifyguru(op): 9:40am On Aug 11, 2017
https://discovery.insidify.com/4-reasons-you-should-get-out-of-your-comfort-zone

I’m sure you've seen inspirational quotes that encourage you to get out and do something strange — something you wouldn't normally do— but getting out of your routine just takes so much work. There's actually a lot of science that explains why it's so hard to break out of your comfort zone, and why it's good for you when you do it. With a little understanding and a few adjustments, you can break away from your routine and do great things.

When it comes to doing the unusual in order to achieve more, terms like "increased performance" and "enhanced productivity" are not unfamiliar. However, to many people, this just sound like "do more stuff." they have questions like ‘what do you really get when you're willing to step outside of your comfort zone? Well, here’s a few for starters:

1.You'll be more productive.

Comfort kills productivity because without the sense of unease that comes from having deadlines and expectations, we tend to underperform and do the minimum required to get by. We lose the drive and ambition to do more and learn new things. We also fall into the "work trap," where we feign "busy" as a way to stay in our comfort zones and avoid doing new things. Pushing your personal boundaries can help you hit your stride sooner, get more done, and find smarter ways to work.

2.You'll have an easier time dealing with new and unexpected changes.

In this article at The New York Times, Brené Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston, explains that one of the worst things we can do is pretend fear and uncertainty don't exist. By taking risks in a controlled fashion and challenging yourself to things you normally wouldn't do, you can experience some of that uncertainty in a controlled, manageable environment. Learning to live outside your comfort zone when you choose to, can prep you for life changes that force you out of it.

3.You'll find it easier to push your boundaries in the future.

Once you start stepping out of your comfort zone, it gets easier over time. This same New York Times article explains that as you step out of your comfort zone, you'll become accustomed to that state of optimal anxiety. "Productive discomfort," as they call it, becomes more normal to you, and you're willing to push farther before your performance falls off. This idea is well illustrated in this infographic at Future Science Leaders. At the bottom, you'll see that as you challenge yourself, your comfort zone adjusts so what was difficult and anxiety-inducing becomes easier as you repeat it.

4.You'll find it easier to brainstorm and harness your creativity.

This is a soft benefit, but it's fairly common knowledge (and it's easily reproducible) that seeking new experiences, learning new skills, and opening the door to new ideas inspire us and educate us in a way that little else does. Trying new things can make us reflect on our old ideas and where they clash with our new knowledge, and inspire us to learn more and challenge confirmation bias, our tendency to only seek out information we already agree with. Even in the short term, a positively uncomfortable experience can help us brainstorm, see old problems in a new light, and tackle the challenges we face with new energy.

The benefits you get after stepping outside of your comfort zone can linger. There's the overall self-improvement you get through the skills you're learning, the new foods you're trying, the new routes you’re taking to work, and the new job you're interviewing for. There's also the soft mental benefits you get from broadening your horizons.

Business › 5 Most Common Frustrations Of A Budding Entrepreneur And Ways To Fix Them by insidifyguru(op): 10:44am On Aug 10, 2017
https://discovery.insidify.com/5-most-common-frustrations-of-a-budding-entrepreneur-and-simple-ways-to-fix-them

Entrepreneurship has its gains, such as having the independence to make your own decisions, the flexibility for a better work/life balance, and personal satisfaction from driving change. But nobody said it would be easy. The road to business success is filled with challenges and frustrations that most aspiring entrepreneurs never even imagined.

In essence, it is imperative for any business starter to prepare for the inevitable bumps in the road ahead, as well as to seek practical guidance on how to build and maintain the traction needed to survive and prosper. Of course, experiences and failures are the best teachers, but learning from other people’s experiences is a much faster and less painful approach.

In his classic book on building a business, “Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business,” Gino Wickman, an experienced business consultant and developer of the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), outlines five common frustrations that we hear from entrepreneurs, as follows:

1.You are the boss, but you don’t have control:

You don’t have enough control over your time, investors, the market, or your startup. Instead of controlling the business, the business is controlling you. By definition, the world of startups today is one of rapidly changing unknowns, where the inputs you receive will often conflict. It’s very frustrating.

2.All the constituents have their own agenda:

You continually get frustrated with your team members, customers, vendors, and partners. They all have their own objectives and priorities, and don’t seem to listen, understand you, or follow through with their actions. You only expected that kind of a challenge from your competitors.

3.Persistent profit and cash flow shortages:

Simply put, there’s frustratingly never enough profit or cash. Even when orders are clearly on the upswing, you need more funding to cover inventory and lagging accounts receivable. Then there are the expenses you never could have anticipated, driving down margins.

4.Constantly bumping your head on the growth ceiling:

No matter what you do, you can’t seem to break through and get to the next level. Your growth has stopped, and you feel frustrated and unsure what to do next. You never have the time and resources for International expansion, acquisitions, venture capital investors, or going public.

5.Conventional strategies don’t seem to work for you:

You have tried all the popular initiatives and quick-fix remedies, including social media, search engine optimization, and content marketing. None have worked for long, and as a result, your staff has become numb to new strategies. You are spinning your wheels, and need traction to move again.

My first answer to all these frustrations is to step back and focus on the basics. Every great business is made up of a core group of key components. Wickman outlines six of these in his book as the Entrepreneurial Operating System for success:

Vision – Communicate a compelling image to everyone describing where the business is going, and how it’s going to get there.

People – Surround yourself with great people. You can’t build a great company without help. It’s having the right people in the right seats.

Data – Define a handful of key metrics to free you from managing personalities, egos, subjective issues, emotions, and intangibles.

Issues – Constantly provide updates and direction on the challenges and obstacles that must be overcome to execute on your vision.

Process – These describe your way of completing each key element of your business. Each must be documented clearly and refined regularly.

Traction – Entrepreneurs gain traction by executing well, with focus, accountability, and discipline.

There is no magic here, and none of the six key components is rocket science. Usually, entrepreneurs who are highly frustrated in their startup have overlooked or have dropped their attention to one of the six basic business components.

Learn from the frustrations of other entrepreneurs, or you are doomed to relive their pain. Put your entrepreneurial operating system in place, and you too can trade in your frustrations and join that select group who enjoy making their own decisions, achieve their work/life balance, and relish the personal satisfaction of their dreams.

Career › Re: Want To SUCCEED In 2016? These 4 Ways Will Help You Do Exactly That by insidifyguru: 11:22am On Mar 15, 2017
Landing an internship placement with a good company is no child’s play. It almost seems like one is vying for an actual job; scratch that, it is an actual job. And until Nigerian graduate and undergraduate interns start treating their internship positions as such, they might not gain much from it. However, getting an internship in the first place will be a cumbersome task if you do not specify the kind of job you want. In my case, I wanted any kind of job which is the genesis of the problem most graduates are facing.

Career › How I Bagged The Intern Of The Year At Sesewa Nigeria Doing These 4 Things. by insidifyguru(op): 10:16am On Mar 15, 2017

Still, I’m not oblivious to the fact that choosing a career path is always a major problem one has to grapple with after school.

In this post, I will show you:

How I was able to get a placement
How I aced the interview questions as an intern
What I’ve gained from interning
1. Determination

If there is one thing I want you to take away from this post. I would like you to know that;

‘’Determination and Preparation is the key thing to landing a good internship placement’’

Here is my internship story:

I had applied for some internship placements at different companies at a time but I didn’t get feedbacks from them. Then I got to know an internship Organization – Sesewa via the association I joined in school. Really, you need to see how ignorant the first mail sent to this company was. No subjects or any word attached to the mail. I’m sure I got lucky; ‘don’t try this at home’.

However, this was the first email I sent to the internship based company. I was interviewed some days later by the Executive Director, which was the first time I would have a job interview. Some of the questions threw me off balance because I wasn’t prepared. I was able to scale through the first stage of the interview but I didn’t get the placement; not because I wasn’t smart enough, it was the company’s decision. Yet, this didn’t deter me from applying for more placements but it prepared me to answer interview questions correctly and also helped build my self-confidence.

I failed a couple of times but I got better as time when by. When I sent the second mail that got me an internship placement, I had done a good job on my CV and also improved a bit in the way I send emails.

The first thing that helped me land an internship placement was my well-crafted CV not the generic ones I had used in the past. That’s fickle right? No, it matters a lot. As an undergraduate or graduate with little or no job experience, a good CV containing the activities you took part in school, leadership experience garnered as well as trainings and certifications received could go a long way.

This landed me an interview with the company within few days of applying. Though it wasn’t perfect but it better that the previous ones I had used. Who knows maybe that was the reason I didn’t get interview invites?

2. Dedication

Now I must say that some simple trick helped me to ace the interview. I had researched the company I was to be interviewed at, checked out some necessary information that could help me hit the apex at the interview. This helped me to turn the table a bit when I asked some questions about the company too, though I couldn’t outsmart my boss.

Researching the company gave me more information about the company and why I should intern with them. In about 4 days I was called for an interview and finally got an internship placement with the company after so many months of looking out for one.

3. Readiness

As much as people tend to cringe when it comes to internships because of the bad experience they’ve had in the past or heard from their friends, internships are a good way to build one’s resume and also gain real work experience. Everything that you learnt in school and more will be put to good use here.

Through internships, one gets the opportunity to acquire a lot of skills if the will and readiness to learn is there. If the people you work with are very open and do not hoarding information, it helps one grow and learn very fast from them. Open your eyes and ears to learn as much as you can whilst on internship. At Insidify, everyone is interested in your growth; mentally, academically, socially and even spiritually. Yeah, don’t be surprised.

4.Networking

Make good friends with your supervisor, employees and even other interns. They will add to your professional network. If you’re able to do well at your job, it would translate to reference letters for jobs at other companies. These people would validate you and vouch for your work experience because you’ve been able to put in your best. And if you’re able to put your best in the job assigned to you and impress the company, you just might be retained. Thereby, earning and learning more.

There’s this saying here at Insidify which says: “Success comes when you give your life’s best work always”. Even as an intern, do your life’s best work because you don’t know who’s watching you. During my internship, I was able to hone my job and also learned a lot that has helped transformed my life. This got me an award as the intern of the year! That’s great news right. Yes, because I did well at my job even as an intern.

Key lessons learnt from my placement search and my internship position:

1. Know what you want: Most undergraduates or graduates don’t know what career path they want to choose. Like the mistake I made too, I simply wanted any job with any company and that doesn’t cut it. However with taking up internships either paid or unpaid, they are worth it because it helps one figure out the career that one is interested in.

2. Be prepared: There’s this quote by Benjamin Franklin that says “By failing to prepare, you’re prepared to fail’’. This just sums it up. There were times when I had to go for an interview I got to know about few hours to the interview and I never knew I could reschedule interviews. Let me categorically state here that I wasn’t fully prepared for the second stage of interview but I was still able to perform well. Preparation puts you at an advantage and overall, it just makes things easier.

In the light of internships and learning, what have you learnt from the internship positions you’ve occupied and how has it helped your career.

Jobs/Vacancies › How To Know If That Job Offer Is A Scam by insidifyguru(op): 4:33pm On Feb 23, 2015
The internet is arguably one of the best man-made inventions. It is filled with life-enriching information portals, fun social platforms, great online job boards—and also multiple online job scams.

True life story; Isibor (not real name), who lives in Benin recounts, his ordeal. He applied for a job online and had received an SMS that he should come to Lagos for an interview. To make the trip from Benin, he borrowed money from his brother, risked his life on the notorious Benin-Lagos road, and lodged at a small hotel in Lagos to revise for the interview. Only to get to the venue and discover that it was not a job interview at all, it was a marketing seminar.

Isibor is not alone. Thousands of Nigerian job seekers have fallen for these unfortunate scams. Here are 9 ways you can detect a scam job.

1. Sneaky advertorial
Have you come across job adverts without a company name? Be careful! Why? Genuine companies seldom hide their names. On the rare occasions that they choose to do this, they either hire a known recruitment agency or they show you enough information to know they are serious.

From the job ad, identifying a scam job is pretty easy. You should look out for missing company names and unclear/vague job descriptions interspersed with obvious typographical & grammatical errors. Not having a company name does not mean the job is scam, but it should raise your suspicion.

2. Phoney contact details
If the job ad has a personal email (for example: adekunleadamu@hotmail.com) as the return address; it is most likely a scam job. A real company (like Apapa APM terminals: appapmtsia@apmterminals.com) will use a professional email address and not a personal mail. The same goes for phone numbers. Scam companies usually list personal phone numbers in their contact details.

3. Ridiculously low requirements
To be candid, not everybody can do a good job. Therefore, not everybody should be able to apply for some jobs.

How to identify a scam job: when you see a job requirement that reads, “Candidate must be 18 years of age and above, must be a citizen, must have internet access, must be able to work from home, no work experience needed, etc.” which means everybody can apply, it is most likely a scam job. A real job will always have some distinguishing criteria.

4. No online footprint
How to identify a scam job: use google. When in doubt about a potential scam job, call on Google, your friend. Real companies have websites, references from other websites, or press releases on other websites. Someone somewhere would have talked about the job or the company online. In any case, if it is a scam job you will likely find a Nairaland thread on the company or the job that will tell you if it is a scam job.

If the company or job has no digital footprint; don’t bother wasting resources. It is most likely a scam job.

5. You were contacted from the blue
You were notified that you have been shortlisted for a job aptitude test or “job briefing” without applying for the job. First and foremost, there is nothing like a job briefing. This term is mostly used by scam marketers who invite unsuspecting job seekers to unsolicited marketing sessions under the guise of an interview.

If any company invites you for an interview without applying, you have most likely identified a scam job. Yes, sometimes your CV gets into the hands of companies you do not remember applying for a job at, but those rare times, make sure you make use of at least tip No. 4 before you dive in.

6. You were contacted via SMS
Real companies do not send interview invitations as SMSs. And even on rare occasions when they do, such an SMS will always be accompanied by an email. If this does not happen in your case, it is likely that the job is a scam job.

(There are still more points.

francizy:
Hello, thanks for your posts...

However I'd like to say that am confused as to what's really on about this CV thing..

Before mid last year, I had bio-data (age, sex, state of origin, etc) on my CV. I sent it out and got called a few times for test and interviews.

I cleared off the whole bio-data later on, and have since not gotten a call..

Also, whenever am asked to apply via email, whether application letter is asked for or not, I did write application letter and even backed it up with a short email message. All these happened till I got an email for an opening, I sent it to two of my friends, they sent only their CVs in empty emails, I wrote application letter and also wrote a short email in a bid to back up my CV. Funny enough my efforts were in vain as my friends got called for test while I wasn't. The firm in question is a big FMCG for that matter.

Really frustrating... cry

So after that day, I resorted to sending out empty emails with attachments. If asked for application, I send, else I send only CV..

So am really confused as to how HRs do their thing since some HR personnel made me feel like the extra effort is a waste of time. cry
Hi, thank you for the compliments.

I'd like to state that the entire job application process is in itself cumbersome, and that is just for one company/firm. The only person, or set of persons, who can tell you EXACTLY what obtains in a firm are those that have had experience either working in or applying to that firm. The issue of you putting this or that in your CV is a case of what obtains for a lot of companies, but definitely not all. There are exceptions to every rule and none more so than in the job application process.

However, please do not despair or lose hope. And do not stop puting in the extra effort. What you should make sure to do is to put that extra effort in the right places. Get as much information as you can about any company/job you are applying to/for before submitting your application. You may not get the job the first, second, tenth, or even twentieth time. But do not stop because of that. Persistence is key.

Hope this helps. Wish you all the best. #Insidify

Family › Working Mothers: 5 Easy Ways You Can Achieve Work-life Balance by insidifyguru(op): 2:04pm On Jan 27, 2015
As a working mother, you are probably facing the challenge of juggling two unique and often demanding roles. Being a mother and a woman working towards career advancement are two fulltime jobs that require every ounce of concentration you can afford.

And if last year, you really didn’t do so well as regards achieving work-life balance as a working mom, do not be dejected! But understand that this is achievable and a lot of other working mothers like you are walking this tight rope too, so you are not alone in this.

Here are some proven ways to help you achieve work-life balance as a working mom this year.

1. Cool off your burners
If you have made mistakes in parenting or at the workplace this past year, you have to forgive yourself first. Acknowledge your mistakes. Both change and conflict begin from within. Start by making new plans to achieve work-life balance as a working mom by first analysing why you are working. Are you working for extra income or fulfilling a desire to contribute to the world?

2. Plan and Commit
Write out your career and parenting goals once again. If you want to achieve work-life balance as a working mom, do not just say it, act it. It is important to have a specific definition of who you want to be. For instance, your goal could be to ensure your children eat more nutritious meals this new year and still write six great and engaging articles per week and publish them on your blog.

3. Connect and network
Every worthy endeavour has its moments of drudgery which may require some doses of external motivation.

For this, you need to connect with working mothers like yourself who may inspire you and also be able to help with their ideas and resources. You should also share your goal of achieving work-life balance as a working mom clearly with your partner and work out family arrangements. This is very important as higher stress levels are associated with dissatisfaction with partners’ commitment and family arrangements.
4. Be motivated, avoid comparisons

Do not compare your job with another woman’s or your kids with another. You should only look at others to be motivated and inspired. Making comparisons is detrimental to your achieving work-life balance as a working mom because you tend to judge yourself by the life/standard of another person which may leave you depressed in the end.
5. Be creative with home management

Creativity is essential, especially in this clime where there are not enough legislations and provisions for working mothers.

If you are not comfortable with a hired help, you could try family. Use holidays creatively for special ‘mommy’ times if you want to achieve work-life balance as a working mom. You can also try to move breakfast and/or dinner times so you can be present.

Being a mother and forging ahead in your career are both inherently demanding, but it is possible to strike a balance. You may fall off this tight rope a number of times but always get back on. That’s the attitude of winners.

Have fun and a great year ahead!

Jobs/Vacancies › Get Funding: This Is How To Pitch That Business Idea To Investors by insidifyguru(op): 1:29pm On Jan 22, 2015
Of what use is a great business idea that the world doesn’t get to see come alive? Since businesses do not thrive on ideas only, but also on sufficient funds, it is just important that an entrepreneur needs to master how to pitch to venture capitalist, angel investors, or any other investor with deep pockets through an effective pitch deck.

These are 5 ways on how to pitch a fantastic idea to investors and get funded.

1. Lay out the problem, and then the solution
Right after giving a short and smooth introduction of yourself, delve right into the problem. Make the investors see how annoying and frustrating the problem can be. Understanding how to pitch to investors involves making them agree with the problem presented. If investors are able to agree with your problem, they will always want to listen to your solution.

Then, present the solution smoothly leaving out the technical details at this point, simplify the solution and let them understand your value propositions.

2. Expound on the product
Like they say, the devil is in the details. Roll up your sleeves and explain the product in details. If you want to pitch ideas to investors successfully, you should talk about your business model, technical information, work strength, marketing and sales plan, competition, financial projections, and other important metrics.

Simply get across to them how they are going to make money or enjoy any other benefit(s) through your product.

3. Water it by revealing traction
If you want to pitch to investors convincingly, you should get a measurable number of customers that indicates a potential for success. Determine, or at least try to predict correctly the size of your target market.

4. Reveal your funding needs
You have been jabbing all the while, it’s time to hook. This is the core of the pitch. State clearly how much is needed to take you to the next level, why you need it, what it will be used for, and how you will manage it. If you want to pitch to investors, it is very important that you also reveal previous investments and ownership percentages, if any.

5. Adopt the 10/20/30 principle
Don’t hang your idea with the noose of PowerPoint. Use the 10/20/30 principle if you want to pitch to investors. The principle states that your presentation should be no more than 10 slides, last no longer than 20 minutes, and include text in font no smaller than 30 point.

Finally, remember that if you want to pitch to investors, you should tell stories that reveal you are really passionate about the product you want them to invest in. Let it glow in your speech and behaviour.

Now that you know how to pitch to investors. Have fun and get funded!

Nice one op, let me share this little piece.
I read management with an MBA, My work experience is in sales/marketing but i have always had this desire to grow my career in project management, so I prepared another resume that presents me as one with experience in project management.
I got a call today from a lady telling me that she has my CV & am been considered for a vacant position of a "Project Manager" in her company, during our discussion she asked me certain questions which I answered including pay expectations. She promised to set up an appointment with me soon.
Though I have theoretical knowledge of what project management entails but lacks the practical aspect.

What do you advice friends.
Thank you so muc for sharing.

The advice you seek to the experience shared here is not an easy one. I'd love to say that you should go ahead but, the again, what if your lack of the practical aspect in Project Management becomes exposed when yoiu are being given a task that your theoritical knowledge of it cannot handle?

Please think carefully before you decide what to do.

Wish you the very best! #Insidify

Jobs/Vacancies › Why And How You Should Avoid Lying At A Job Interview by insidifyguru(op): 3:59pm On Jan 15, 2015
Have you ever been tempted to lie at a job interview? Be honest. There are probably times when you have felt the nudge to exaggerate your job title, responsibilities, and achievements or even ‘tweak’ your age. What about the time you said you are an expert at Photoshop, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office when in fact you are just a beginner?

Lying at a job interview puts you at the precipice of disaster. This may get you fired as quickly as you were hired or put you in a courtroom depending on the severity of the damage arising from the lie you told at the job interview.

The following are the reasons you shouldn’t lie at a job interview and how to put your best foot forward in such situations.
Because interviewers almost always smell lies about work experience

You should never try to lie at a job interview about your work experience. Interviewers can be bloodhounds when it comes to matters bordering on experience. You will most likely be slammed with a swarm of follow-up questions on the experiences you claimed to possess.

Lying at a job interview about your work experience is probably not in your best interest because you will need to keep backing a lie with a bigger lie which will leave you exposed eventually. What you should do is to magnify the areas where you have experience, work on it, polish it and downplay the areas you do not.
Because you may get kicked out a week after you are hired

Lying at a job interview about a skill you do not possess can be your undoing. Imagine a week after you resumed work, your boss instructs you to use a software you claimed you are highly proficient in to carry out a part of a bigger project he is to present to investors the same week. See the point? You may get the job but still get kicked out.

Instead of lying at a job interview about your skills, it is better you let your level of proficiency in the skill you possess known beforehand.
Because you may be disgraced

You shouldn’t for any reason nourish the thought of lying at a job interview about your credentials. Do not lie about your grade, school, or degree. You will be found out eventually and disgraced, even if it takes years and you have climbed to an upper management position.

Instead, show in the interview that you are keen on learning and intend to pursue a higher degree or relevant certifications as the job demands.
Because you are blowing your chances of getting hired

Almost all job seekers lie at job interviews about their current salaries. You may feel it puts you on a higher ground for negotiation but almost all the time, employers have a defined salary scale for employees especially at entry-level positions.

Lying at a job interview about your salary especially when you are over-amplifying may send the signal that the recruiter cannot afford your service, hence he/she may therefore not contact you.

Instead, try to find out the salary scale for that position before the interview or give the value of your entire compensation package (salary, vacation, and other benefits) at your last job.

Have you ever lied at a job interview? How did it end? Care to share? Let us learn in the comment section.

Thanks, you know when you can see handwriting on the wall, it's good to be proactive. In a place where nepotism, favouritism,godfatherism,(in-short the Nigerian thing) is always displaced and you know your value and your worth, you need to be able to move fast and without prompting them at all
You are absolutely correct. Compliments of the season to you and yours. smiley

Another way to this is that if you are an expert in your job and a skillful person, you can do all without getting scared. Rather, you get your employer scared when they see you are making moves and they buckle up in other not to lose you.

So whether you browse with office laptops, comment on social media, show up in suits at your office it doesnt have anything on some people.

IT gurus and Expert auditors can probably testitfy to this.
You are very correct. But you still need to be careful though because:

1. You don't want to burn bridges when you eventually move to the new job and

2. Also because, when all is said and done, no one is indispensable. #Insidify
