A laptop by the name Gecko is currently being developed with the developing world especially in mind. The company behind the device is Thai system integrator Norhtec, a company that designs and manufactures computer servers and computers that are smaller, low-priced, more energy efficient and quieter than computer servers used today, according to an information page on their website. The Gecko is being designed by Quanta who was also the developer and producer of the OLPC.

The Gecko has a 7" clamshell design and runs on a 1.0 GHz VIA C7-M CPU, has a 40GB hard drive and up to 1GB of DDR2 RAM and about 3.5 hours battery life. The device runs Linpus Linux Lite which a new operating system tailored for small-screen mini-PCs.

The UMPC was developed for the conditions prevailing in Nigeria after Norhtec was invited to participate in a large bid for small laptops in the country by Incapint Limited. With the OLPC project being present in Nigeria the task for Norhtec & Incapint was to come up with a device that had to be small, energy efficient and rugged but with more general purpose and broader utility than the OLPC.
