that guy was lucky because both snakes in that pic are Puff Adders, a highly venomous snake species. It has caused so many deaths.
Some snakes are very aggressive like the Black mamba and Cobra, when you try to kill them, they strike back in defense and their strike is with so much speed.
When its close to you, best is to remain calm and let it slither away. Any attempt to move will make it strike back in defense.
