Hi Onyeoma. Thanks so much. I am doing just what you suggested. It's just so frustrating that I can come this far and be let down. But I still have faith. I will keep trying for the one week I have left. Thanks again for caring. God bless.

A TIP ON GETTING A SUPERVISOR FOR RESEARCH/THESIS BASED M.Sc and Ph.D

First don't just go and mailed any professor in your department, there is a reason why most of the departments in Canadian Universities list all the names, contact, and research interest for all their lecturers, some lecturers also has website or the website of their lab were they list all their research interest, publications, seminars, previous thesis they supervised, the current work going on in their research lab.

Some (like my department) even go to the extend of listings all their graduate students (both M.Sc and Ph.D) with their thesis topics, their supervisors and publications, some schools also collect the previous thesis and publish them online on their website.

So why am I saying all this?

You need to understand that these potential supervisors need to know what you will be contributing to their current research work or what new research topic you had in mind.

As a student who wants to pursue Thesis based M.Sc or Ph.D, you need to at lest know your research interest or what you wanna Work on when you reach Canada, better still it's always an added advantage if you can get a research topic right before you start contacting potential supervisors, I know to must of us Nigerians this is little bit hard since must of our Universities are not research oriented and so must of us doesn't have background in doing research. But that's where the information on the department website and Google can be of help :

- Go through the website of your department and find about the various lectures in the department, and their research interest, if they have website go through it and see their previous Research, if they work in a particular lab in your department go through the website of that lab and find about the current research goin on at the lab.
- Look for students in the department doing research on your area of interest and their current supervisors
- Check previous graduates of the department and go through their published thesis.
- Search Google about your area of interest and the recent developments going on in that particular area
- Make conclusions about the research topic you want based on the information you find from the research you did above, or atlest know what
Part you are interested in and the recent developments going on in that part as regards to your potential supervisor's research interest.

Note: this can take some days so set aside some days and concrete time for this, after all remember you are going for a research in Canada so you might as well start to learn how to go about doing it

After you make your research, get a list of professors that suits your needs and contact them,

Here is some tip for writing the email

Don't just list your previous achievements and start praising the supervisor that you really want to work with them...and calling them all sort of good names, this will hardly help in my opinion, try to make it professional...unlike our Nigerian lectures, these people like to know about your research interest and how serious and dedicated you are, while adding your previous achievements, awards, previous research and publications relevant to your proposed research area is always very important, you should also do some thorought research about what you want to do so that you can tell the professor how passionate you are about doing research and the knowledge you had about the recent developments in that particular area you are interested in, and also the prerequisites and good grades you had.

If you can follow these steps and do some research before contacting supervisors I assure you you wil get some good response from these people, and if you have good grade you might even secure yourself a scholarship if u are lucky the supervisors has some funding to give to students...

Lastly, I'm not expert nor guru, I just share my experience and what I found out through research...so I stand to be corrected smiley

@kol1234 abeg answer my question , i also plan on going to u of alberta for msc but don't know where to start from.

You can start from Google...like seriously you already know the school you want to apply why can't you go through their website and the website of the department to find about their requirement and how to apply....every school have different requirements...you have a good grade and you can even get a scholarship...most of this schools website has detailed information about everything and I mean everything you need to know...you just have to be a little patience and do some research online...you don't have to wait for anyone to tell you how he secured his admission or his undergraduate grade...the best place to get your information is from the school...anything you don't understand ask your department graduate assistant...she's your best friend in school and will be glad to answer your questions...I don't even know about Naira Land until I got admission and scholarship and I'm ready to apply for TRV...so you shouldn't just be here and be asking people to tell you how they got theirs while everything is there online...

You are free to ask more questions. I didn't get any sms or email that it has been received.

I received an email notifying me of an update to my CIC account (POE letter of introduction) the following day or a couple of days after submission.

I received two sms from VFS on Friday. One that my passport was ready for collection and the second was that it has been collected.

Cheers!

thanks bro...

Wonderful! You be big man o!

Hi JohnDuke259,

Please after you have submitted your passport in person at CVAC did you receive any text or email indicating that they have received your passport or they have send it to the embassy?

Something like what we get after biometrics...the text and the email...sorry I ask too much questions, I just want to know what to expect...

You don't pay for transmission from VFS to Canadian Embassy since you did your biometrics there. Last Tuesday, I paid N4690 for courier delivery during passport submission since I didn't want to collect it in person. I received my passport yesterday through UPS.

If you wish to send your passport to them by courier. I think you might have to include a self-addressed envelope and pay for the cost of the return. You can discuss that with the courier company. I will recommend UPS.

Cheers!

Thank you so much @JohnDuke259, you have been very helpful to me, too bad i'm seeing this message now i could have use UPS since that's what the VFS uses maybe it might be a little easier for them to post back, i have been waiting for your response since i know you are the latest guy that submit passport lately, but then i decided to to just post it, thank God i did not pay the Transmission fee grin, but any ways i use DHL to send the passport and included a prepaid return envelope for the return. i have track my passport on DHL website and it's already half way to Lagos, hopefully i will get it back next week with my TRV grin

Please those online applicants that submitted their passport to VAC in Lagos after it has been requested by CIC, do you pay the 5000 naira for passport transmission service or you didn't since you give your biometrics at the VAC, their website indicate if u are submitting your passport to the same VAC as the one you give your biometrics then no need to pay for the transmission service charges, but I want to make sure because I want to send my passport through courier and I don't want any delays...also those that submitted their passport through courier before please do share your experience...God bless...

I handed it in person. I will receive it through courier. I have received two sms from VFS today. The first was that my passport was ready for collection. The second is that it has been collected. I believe it has been sent out.

I am not sure if you can send it via courier because I would have opted for same. CIC website stated that payment for courier delivery has to be done in VFS Office.

Cheers!

Thanks, I have checked VFS website, Sims like I can also send my passport via courier...

Please house quick question , @darefestus, hayqinsbFX, invincible2006 Those of you who received Thank you message from CIC, was the message sent to your email, or was it through text msg to ur phone?

My application is more than one month now, i haven't receive thank you message, and i observed those that didn't receive this msg, their application isn't successful! im just scared.. any advice

If you have submitted online and included your email on your CIC account and also tick the box that says you will like CIC to send you monthly messages then you should have recieve an email when your app is exactly one month...but please note that the message is auto generated and shouldn't be an issue since there are lots of things that can stop it from reaching you including not spelling your email correctly or not ticking that box...but anyway u can always check your CIC account for updates, and please have a positive thinking, you will get good news soon, every applicant is treated differently and things like this computer generated messages should not be an issue to stop you from getting your trv....I WISH YOU BEST OF LUCK while you wait to receive your medical email....cheers...

This is not about being scared..Imagine the VOs thinking we Nigerians have an issue with comprehension(So 90 percent of peeps here got it wrong) and no one was willing to point it out when the question was raised.Everyone just dey do their own. I told peeps repeatedly that Naija is on the designated countries. But they offered a way out without finding out if it was right.Well the VOs still do their second check and call for medicals, but we just av to do things right next time.

Cheers!

sir the form shouldn't be a problem...a lot of people before now doesn't upload it...they just tick 'No' to get rid of the "Medical thing"...CIC will still contact you to request for medicals if they are interested in your app....

To everyone in here, please chill I don't mean to scare you guys, I was just listing the docs I submitted like everyone does after being call for medicals so as to help others see what they can submit... the form isn't a big deal...just an issue I noticed here that everyone is choosing 'No' just to get rid of the 'Request for medical exams" field which I personally think it's wrong since Nigeria is among the designated countries and CIC provide a form to be upload in the field...lets just move on and leave this Medical form matter...I guess its insignificant if you include it or not...

Cheers smiley

Clicking the question mark takes you to the portion to upload...It doesnt show u any form, I did that severally before I gave up. Check your system if u saved a copy of this form. Thanks!

No it does, question mark give you more details about the particular part... i. e what you are supposed to upload...when u click the one for medical exams you will see something like you need to upload "Request for medical exam" underlined.... Meaning it's a link... Just click it and you will be taking to where you can download it...u might have to log out of your account before u can download thou... Then you can come back and continue after u have downloaded... And yes I have a copy on my computer... But I'm not with it now...

Can u please say the name of this form you downloaded. Cos I know I raised this question and pple were like the medical request isn't supposed to be there....and becos I had no one with my particular case, I went ahead to eliminate the medical request. You should try to point things out on this forum so as to get some things corrected. Thanks!

"Request for Medical Exams" i forget the number... it's just some information about Canada wanting you to take medical exams before coming if u live in one of the designated countries...you just simply tick the place it says "Yes I will like CIC to contact me with instructions for medical exams" and upload it... U can download it right from the place you get your check list...by clicking on the question mark next to "Medical exams thing"

Really....congrats.....you are fit for the Job then...Programming is very lucrative here but its not for the faint hearted. I have meet peeps from African countries here that got in for computer science and had to run to other departments no thanks to the theoretical garbage they taught majority of us in Nigeria . Infact some had to start new UG in something entirely different from computer science and its acquaintances while some had to even leave because you mustnt fall below a B standing which is 75 percent out of 100 else you will be advised to withdraw hahahahahahhahaaha.

LOL this is serious, well then we'll see what we can do...yeah i agree with you they taught us musty theory here in Nigeria...but since i personally love programming computer and other mobile devices, i had to learn everything by myself...now i guess it's time to gain from all my hard work...

If you live in Nigeria you must do medicals either way...upfront or when you are ask to go for it....

You should point out to him that, he dsnt have to do medicals before submitting but when he's asked to do so.
#allimsaying

Oh yeah you are right, he must do medicals one way or the other if he lives in Nigeria for the past 6 consecutive months...either upfront or when CIC contact him to go for it...

Don't confuse that dude too much

Nothing confusing here, i did not do medicals yet, there is a form called request for medical exams which you will download and upload, it basically says you want CIC to contact you for medicals...that's if you choose you live in one of the designated countries which Nigeria is among...i saw alot of people here answering no to the question about living in one of the designated countries which i personally feel it's wrong since Nigeria is among, if you choose you have not don upfront Medical exams, CIC will ask for "Request for medical exams" not "Proof of Medical Exams" they are two different things...thank you
