For the first time installation u might need that Wifi connection for the Samsung pre-Installed apps that were formatted b4 u became the new owner.After this u shud be safe.
I was able to tweak his settings tho.so he was able to use his phone data instead but it took a long time

The best option will be to move down to the market and get a screen replacement done.But it will cost u quite alot,this android Sony is a 55” tv.
