Owerri – The Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra,MASSOB, has said that it would resist election in the South if the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega refuses to go. The MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike who disclosed this Wednesday at world press conference held at the MASSOB headquarters annex, New Owerri, Imo State, said the resolve of his group stemmed from the various allegations of bias leveled against the INEC boss. Jega…INEC boss In his address entitled Jega Must Go, Uwazuruike known as the Ijele Ndigbo said “it has become increasingly worrisome that despite strong allegations of bias against the INEC boss, Attahiru Jega, he ,Jega,is still preparing to conduct the forth coming general elections. He said that the worry stemmed from the fact that the election conducted by the INEC boss would lack credibility and would unavoidably put the nation into serious crisis. “In such crisis as usual the safety of live and property of Ndigbo in the North and other parts of Nigeria will be targets for destruction. “From the onset, Jega was not prepared for free and fair elections. He demonstrated that by his infamous 30,000 polling units, where he allotted more than two-third of the polling units to the North. Despite public outcry, the Senate also passed a resolution stating that the polling units should not be used. Still Jega went ahead and converted the polling units to voting centres in the North,” he said. The MASSOB leader also pointed out that Prof Jega was able to distribute more than 90 per cent of the Permanent Voters’ Cards,PVCs, in the North, including Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states were there are raging insurgency while he failed to distribute 50 per cent of the same in the South before the elections were shifted. He, therefore, said that even when the elections were shifted, there are an avalanche of allegations that Jega would be biased in the conduct of the March and April elections. “The Governor of Plateau State, Mr Jonah Jang has taken INEC to court based on the fact that the PVCs meant for distribution in his state is yet to arrive. Besides, other states governors are still complaining that PVCs meant for their states are yet to be printed. “Jega wants to organise a kangaroo election where he intends to pronounce his preferred candidate the winner of the election. “This much has been stated by the leaders of the South-East, South-South Leaders Forum led by Chief Edwim Clark. The Forum also exhibited evidences of the minutes of meetings by Jega and members of Northern Elders Forum. Till date Jega is yet to refute the allegations,” he said. Uwazuruike said that his group was disturbed by the catastrophe his agenda might provoke, saying that the impending calamity could be avoided by Jega quitting. His words: “Inasmuch as many believe that Jega has compromised, the only option left for him is to quit. He is not the only person that can conduct election in Nigeria. Any national commissioner of the INEC can do so.” He disclosed that the people of the South-East, South-South and South-West have passed a vote of no confidence on Jega. “If Jega so insists in conducting the elections he may well conduct the forthcoming elections only in the North. Jega cannot conduct a pre-determined election for the South,” vowing that there would not be any election in the South if Jega insists on remaining to conduct the polls. The MASSOB leader warned that if the upcoming election is not well managed it would snowball into crisis, which he said would see the Igbo as major casualty. He insisted that Jega has a moral obligation to quit now because of the many allegations against him on bias, pointing out that former electoral umpires like Abel Guobadia and Prof Maurice Iwu had in the past quit three months before their terminal date and elections still held as scheduled. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/177837-u-s-lawmakers-warn-nigerian-government-against-further-shift-of-elections.html The U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee has passed a unanimously bipartisan legislation to condemn the activities of the insurgent group in Nigeria, Boko Haram. The Committee, chaired by U.S. Representative, Ed Royce, lambasted the group over its bloody attacks, which has left thousands of citizens dead, while several hundreds of thousands of others have been displaced from their homes. The Committee also highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s forthcoming elections, stressing the dire consequences of any further shift in the schedule. Specifically, the legislation introduced by a Representative, Robin Kelly, condemned Boko Haram, describing its series of attacks on innocent men, women, and children in northeastern Nigeria as ‘cowardly’. In spite of the activities of Boko Haram, which has posed serious security concerns and threat to the elections, the lawmakers urged the Nigerian government to do everything to ensure it held a safe and credible election without further delay. In addition, the legislation applauded the efforts of the African Union to raise a standing regional force to combat Boko Haram and expresses support for a robust security assistance to the new force. After the resolution was passed, the Committee Chairman said: “It’s no wonder that Boko Haram is being called the ISIS of Africa.” He recalled that in January, Boko Haram had launched one of its worst attacks, which saw thousands of innocent citizens killed, adding that the Committee resolution condemned in its entirety those brutal attacks. The lawmakers encouraged the Nigerian government to continue to work with the United States and the neighbouring countries of Chad, Niger and Cameroun to defeat the bloody group, pointing out that the government needed to ensure that the new coalition forces authorized by the African Union has the tools needs to get the job done. This resolution also urged the Nigerian government to avoid further shift in the election schedule and adhere to the new election time table of March 28 for presidential and National Assembly elections. The elections for the governors and the members of the various state legislatures is scheduled for April 11. Besides, the lawmakers also called on all the candidates of the various political parties to uphold their commitments to prevent political violence, which they noted was not “uncommon in Nigeria.” Last year, the Committee, during a hearing entitled, “Boko Haram: The Growing Threat to Schoolgirls, Nigeria, and Beyond”, critically examined the President Goodluck Jonathan administration’s response to the insurgent activities of Boko Haram.” Prior to the hearing, the Chairman met with Deborah Peter, a 15-year-old girl from Chibok community, where nearly about 234 schoolgirls were abducted by Boko Haram. Ms. Peter was the first female survivor of a Boko Haram attack to visit Washington, D.C. |

HARARE, Sunday Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe says top officials in his ruling Zanu PF sought the services of Nigerian withdoctors in a bid to kill him. President Mugabe made the bizarre claims yesterday as he celebrated his 91st birthday at a lavish party hosted by the party’s communist-styled 21st February movement. The veteran ruler, in power since Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980, turned 91 on February 21 and claims he was ordained by God to rule forever. He told party supporters at the celebrations held at a top hotel in the resort town of Victoria Falls that fired Vice-President Joice Mujuru used two Nigerian witchdoctors in her alleged plot to have him killed. Ms Mujuru was fired together with more than 10 Cabinet ministers for allegedly plotting to assassinate President Mugabe and being involved in corrupt activities. The former VP has repeatedly denied the allegations and some of the fired ministers are preparing a court application to challenge their expulsion from Zanu PF. DESPERATE President Mugabe said Ms Mujuru was now too desperate to push him out of power even after he won an election in 2013. “We managed to know what (Ms) Mujuru was doing at her house, even consulting witchdoctors,” he claimed. “Recently she invited two Nigerian withdoctors. We heard that they were specialists in the field of withcraft. They were specialists, yes, but specialists in robbing people, foolish people.” He said the Nigerians ordered Ms Mujuru to buy chickens that were named after herself, the president, his wife and Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The president said the chickens representing Ms Mujuru’s opponents were slaughtered with the Nigerians allegedly proclaiming that their deaths were imminent. He claimed the former Vice-President, who was his deputy for 10 years, performed the rituals naked. “Where do these Nigerians get the powers to entrap the soul of a human being into a chicken or sheep and then kill him? “God is for us all. I also go to church, I do not believe in superstition. We were taught God’s teachings.” Despite claims made since October last year that Ms Mujuru plotted to kill President Mugabe, she has not been charged with any crime. President Mugabe has repeatedly threated that the fired government officials would be sent to jail for alleged corruption but no action has been taken up to now. Last year, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs ministry summoned Zimbabwean envoy in Abuja Stanely Kunjeku to protests after President Mugabe said Nigerians were corrupt. The Nigerian government said it had lodged ‘the strongest protest’ against the veteran ruler’s statements. http://www.nation.co.ke/news/africa/Nigerians-tried-to-bewitch-me-Mugabe-tells-birthday-party/-/1066/2639624/-/5cqaot/-/index.html |
