JUO: with the explanation valve seal is the culprit. it happened to me and I only changed the valve seal. make sure your piston and rings are not worn. you don't have to be scared, look for a good mechanic to fix it. I did mine with 11k including oil and oil filter. you budget 15k.it takes a professional to do the job because your top cylinder will have to down and make sure are there. it will a one day job so make out the time good luck

1. I need you to answer these questions, Did mechanic remove you Catalytic converter (indomie) or oxygen sensor from that car?
2. Have they opened you engine before?
3. Have they remove anything like termostart or even change your gasket before?
4. How many litres of oil and what type of oil do you use in that car/ and when do you normally change it?

However, I will like you to scan that car and show us the code(s) it throws up.

answers to your questions:
1-the catalytic converter is still there according to mechanic but am not sure of oxygen sensor
2-i have not opened the engine before. just got the car 2 weeks ago.
3- the only thing done on the car was changing of engine and gear oil, coolant and replacement of brake pads
4- my mechanic said he used TOTAL cos that is what he used for most of my friends also.
I scanned the car on Friday, the error was catalytic error. unfortunately the mechanic at the service center wasn't around. the manager of the service center told me maybe its a blockage but cleared the error but the light came on again on sunday morning.

I consulted another mechanic I met somewhere I went to, the guy said maybe its the engine oil or the valve seal. he maybe correct cos I saw the same complaint on a website carcomplaints.com and the solution people had was changing of the valve seal. I also discovered from the website that its a general problem for the model.

omicron: If it happens quite early in the money wen the outside temperature is cold, then it could be steam, especially as it clears seconds after the engine has warmed.

Otherwise, it may be a problem with your cooling system, especially coolant leaks or gasket problems.

Auto gurus here should know better.

I just acquired a tokunbo 02/03 Toyota camry. my mechanic serviced with TOTAL oil. The check engine light came up the following when I drove the car. I later noticed after some days of servicing that when I start the engine in the morning or after parking for some time (probably when the engine cools off) there will be white smoke from the exhaust but within 5-8 seconds it will fizzle out. after talking to another mechanic, he said I should get " STOP SMOKE" from a filling station and poured or drop into the engine.
I took the car for scanning and got the catalyst error codes, it was cleared and after 3 days it came up again.
the experts, specialists and anybody that has the idea in the house, please advice me on what to do cos I don't want to gamble with car engine by this our road side mechanics.

Also, I just got a 02/03 camry from cotonou through jelad ventures (saintjoel - username on nairaland) with a mileage of 178k (actual confirmed from Vin history). When at a stop, u won't notice if d engine is on or not unless u check d tachometer on the dash. What am saying here is that mileage does not really matters on cars from usa or canada cos they were used on smooth freeways or highways coupled with good maintenance from previous owner(s).

I drove my uncle's car while in Lagos during sallah, a 98 Honda Accord with mileage of 234K. The engine and the AC worked so perfectly dat made me fell in love with the car. There are so many low mileage cars that are nothing to write home about. Pls don't fall for the low mileage trick abeg.

From my experience, a car of 2002 with a mileage of 170k isn't bad at all if that is the true mileage. Hardly do cotonou guys roll back mileage of cars. It's naija dealers that do that a lot to entice the novice buyers. Imagine someone buying a 2000 model car with mileage of 30k. What matter most as some people have earlier mentioned is the state of the engine which should be ascertained for you by a good mechanic. Also to know that is the true mileage, tell your friend to send you the VIN number so that you can the VIN history of the car. my suggestion is that when you want to buy a naija fairly used car, copy down the registration number (plate number) and go to the any police station and ask them to help you check if it has ever been reported stolen before. tell them you want to purchase the car, simple. but it will cost you a small bucks sha.

I am the person Gbenga was referring to. I have been a nairalander since 2007 but starting visiting auto section of the forum this year july when a friend advised me to buy a Volvo s80. through my research about the car cos I don't know what it looks like and the cost. I then came across this thread by Saintjoel and took my time to read all he has to say about buying a car from cotonou. my mind set about cotonou cars changed immediately. to cut the long story short, we became friends via phone conversations and sms since july. I was convinced that this guy called gbenga must be a sincere person. Dear Nairalanders, I sent money to Gbenga that I ve never met before in my life and behold the car in the pics got to me in Abuja within one week.
I recommend Gbenga (saintjoel) to anyone intending to buy car(s) from cotonou. don't mind how many times you will have to call him before he picks your calls. Pls don't ask me if this an arrangement to fool you cos its not. This is a genuine confirmation of dealing with Jelad Ventures.
Like he said we had our differences on the car and at a point I became afraid of what I did by sending money to someone I ve never met. All the details of the transaction he gave me correlates with the custom documents.
