CrimeUK Remands 28-Year-Old Nigerian For Stabbing Mother To Death by ISTP(op):
ISTP:
A Nigerian, Nicolas Aina, has been arraigned for stabbing his 64-year-old mother, Caroline Adeyelu, to death and injuring his 33-year-old sister, Angel Adeyelu, at their family house in Dagenham, East London, United Kingdom.

According to itv News, the 28-year-old allegedly went into his sister’s bedroom and stabbed her repeatedly with a knife.

After she heard her daughter’s screams, Caroline reportedly went in to see what was going on, but the suspect allegedly lunged at her with the knife before fleeing the property in Auriel Avenue.

Aina’s mother was pronounced dead at the scene, while his sister was treated in hospital for stab wounds and discharged.

A neighbour, Samantha Southey, who lived adjacent to the victims’ home, reportedly stated that she heard the commotion resulting from the incident.

She said, “I just heard a bit of commotion last night. The police knocked on the door and said they caught the person. It’s a little bit frightening.”

Aina was reported to have appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court before Judge Philip Katz KC, on Tuesday, November 1, where he was charged with murder and attempted murder.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey Court on Thursday.

A detective of the East Area Command Unit, Superintendent Richard Vandenbergh, described the incident as ‘truly shocking’.

By Abimbola Adelakun

First, I commiserate with David Adeleke (a.k.a Davido) and Chioma Rowland on the untimely death of their son, Ifeanyi.

Like most netizens, I see the young lad’s photos circulate the web and it feels like I know him personally. Words are insufficient to capture the searing pain of the loss and one can only pray for their family to find the fortitude to bear it.

Losing a child is never easy, and theirs will be impacted by social media where people with zero bandwidth of emotional intelligence will make malicious comments about the unfortunate incident.

Already, a so-called prophet who claims to have foreseen the incident is exploiting the moment to ask the bereaved to come and see him personally.

I hope Davido ignores the charlatan; he does not want to be turned into a cheap target of social media hustlers looking to exploit his pain for money. We should normalise ignoring Nigerian prophets who always see death but never life.

If that prophet is truly a man of God, let him tell us when Nigeria will have a 24/7 power supply!

Second, writing about drowning has been on my list of issues to discuss for months now after reading about disturbing incidents of drowning involving children.

In May, for instance, Chidera Eze, a five-year-old pupil of Redeemers Nursery and Primary School, Ogba, Lagos State, drowned during a swimming lesson organised by the school. Another report, in June, stated that three siblings drowned in a swimming pool within their estate in Ajah, Lagos State. There were a couple of other instances too.

Since this recent one happened, people have recalled that another music star, Dapo Oyebanjo (D’Banj), lost his child via drowning in 2018.

While the circumstances that led to the deaths of these children in the pools were never made clear, my observation from being around swimming pools in Nigeria is that we do not put enough safety measures in place to prevent drownings.

Please note that I am not directly blaming anyone, especially the parents, for any of the incidents. Anyone who has ever raised a child can tell you that surviving their toddler years is a miracle. Children have no concept of danger, and you only need to look away for a moment for the worst to happen.

Also, accidents happen even under the best of circumstances (which is why they are called “accidents” because they suppose a breach). However, when there are not enough guardrails in place and something goes wrong, it is no longer accidental.

Drowning is, of course, not peculiar to Nigeria as it can happen anywhere in the world. The World Health Organisation lists it as the third leading cause of unintentional injury worldwide. Countries with middle and low income (like Nigeria) account for about 90 per cent of the global casualty rate.

As an African, you are ten times likelier to drown in a swimming incident than a German.

Some years ago, I was astounded to read the media profile of fishermen working around Lake Victoria in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya who did not know—and never learnt— how to swim. Even the police officers who patrol the lake do not know how to swim! These people were raised to stay away from water—and they still do—even though they ironically earn their livelihoods from it.

The toxic combination of poverty and fatalism that prevail among the people accounts for a high rate of drowning, many of which are even unreported.

Nigeria is not all that different. Unless you were born in a riverine area or had parents who had some access to the few pools around the whole country, there is a high likelihood that you cannot swim either.

Although reliable data to substantiate the percentage of Nigerians that cannot swim is virtually nonexistent, I can surmise that most people do not. Nobody taught them as children (the best time for anyone to learn) and the facilities available for them to learn as an adult are either poor, inaccessible, or missing altogether.

Recall that in 2014, the Nigerian Navy administration announced that they were introducing compulsory swimming lessons for all its officers. They had realised that most junior and senior officers could not swim and therefore were incapable of conducting waterborne operations! If it were not Nigeria, who would believe the story of naval officers that could not do something as basic to their job as swimming?

Part of my observation of water safety in Nigeria is that we are not a swimming culture

As such, the safety measures of other societies, where swimming is practically routine and developed, are still largely alien to us. Without the regularity of swimming activities that prompts insistence on safety measures, people build or go to swimming pools without considering everything that can go wrong.

Elsewhere, there are Pool and Safety Acts that provide legal guidance to guarantee water safety, but water accidents are relatively rare in Nigeria, and hardly any Nigerian lawmaker will make that a priority. The best we can do for now is to sensitise ourselves to what can go wrong and take necessary precautions.

For families with swimming pools in their houses, ringing a fence around it is not even enough. Children have been known to scale those fences to get to the pool. Children are always curious and will go out of their way to seek thrills. You cannot warn them enough to desist.

People who build swimming pools at home should also invest in a mesh covering to tightly cover the surface when not in use. If it is an indoor pool, the door leading to it should have an alarm.

Even from the point of building pools, there is a need for safety precautions. Some drains inside pools have been known to entrap children and cause their death. If your swimming pool potentially poses such a problem, it should be fitted with an anti-entrapment cover.

Public pools should always have trained lifeguards. Where there are no lifeguards, people should receive sufficient warning.

Also, there should always be rescue equipment by the pool side. As much as possible too, everyone should learn how to recognise the signs of drowning. Once, I witnessed someone drowning and I had no clue what was happening. It looked ordinary, totally devoid of the drama that comes with similar incidents in Hollywood movies. We were lucky that someone recognised the signs and intervened.

Most importantly, children should always be supervised. Even when multiple people are gathered around the pool, never assume that everyone can see what is happening. When everyone is watching, nobody is really watching. Even when your children can swim, they should still be monitored because you just never know. Drowning has happened to even swimmers, so it is important not to rule anything out.

I have been to swimming pools where I have seen parents buried in their phones as their children dived into the pool. While I always find such confidence admirable, I still believe monitoring them will not hurt. Anything can go wrong.

One must not take anything for granted. A swimming pool need not be deep before one drowns in it. Children have died in a six-inch pool. Also, a phenomenon called “dry drowning” can happen hours after leaving the pool.

If your children’s school asks to take them for swimming lessons, ask questions about what protocols they have in place in case an accident happens. What will the ratio of teacher-students in the pool be like? Can the teacher perform CPR?

Make them answer those questions convincingly or refuse to release your child into their care.

Those questions will make it seem like your own is too much but do not be embarrassed to be that annoying parent when your child’s life is involved.

Ailing Nollywood actress, Halima Abubakar, slams her colleagues over their sudden sympathy for the loss of Davido’s son but never celebrated him for once.

The actress who confronted a popular clergyman, Apostle Suleman, multiple times gave the same energy to her colleagues commiserating with Davido.

According to Halim Abubakar, the late three-year-old boy did not receive birthday wishes but suddenly everyone cares because he is no more.

“Half of you who posted that little baby didn’t wish him hbd….. But you are the first to post his demise. Do you people think at all? It shows how many of you only celebrate bad news, such a sad reality…,” she wrote.

Did you wish him a hbd? No!! You rush write RIP…

EducationCourt Frees 16 Ogun Students In Detention After PUNCH Report by ISTP(op): 1:12am On Nov 04, 2022
ISTP:
A magistrate court sitting in Owode, Ogun State, on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 granted bail to 16 pupils of Ibafo Community High School who were in police detention for 11 days over a fight that broke out in the school.

Sunday PUNCH had earlier reported that parents of these pupils protested their unlawful detention by the police.

See thread here: https://www.nairaland.com/7409663/16-ogun-students-detention-destroying#118007206

The pupils were arraigned after being illegally kept in detention at the Ibafo Police Station for 10 days.

They, however, spent the night at the Owode Area Command of the Ogun State Police on Monday.

The court later freed the 16 pupils but sentenced them to two months of community service in their respective worship centres on Fridays and Sundays.

They are expected to carry out community service at the Ibafo Community Health Centre every Saturday till December 31, 2022.

One of the parents, Mrs Salmat Adediran, appreciated the management of The PUNCH for coming to their rescue after efforts to rescue the pupils had failed.

She said, “We must really thank the management of Punch for responding to our cries when we came to them. If they didn’t respond, maybe our children will still be kept in illegal detention till now. Thank you so much.”

Another parent, Mrs Kemi Lateef also thanked The PUNCH and lamented that many of the pupils have fallen ill.

She stated, “After they were released, many parents had to take their child to the hospital because they were ill already.

“A 14-year-old should never have been subjected to such harsh treatment, it took a toll on my own daughter particularly. I just want to appreciate PUNCH for listening to us when we called upon them.”

Being a parent goes beyond paying people to look after your kids.
It's negligence on the parents. What's Chioma walking up and down with big breast neglecting mother care. She has no business following Davido upandan.
I blame Davido for not being disciplined to ask her to stay home for the child. If the child returns from school, the mother must be at home. You don't have a job but won't sit in one place. They are not ready to be parents.

CrimeIfeanyi: Davido’s Nanny, Cook May Face Charges For Negligence by ISTP(op): 4:55pm On Nov 03, 2022
• PMAN calls for laws on swimming pool to protect children

The two suspects detained in connection with the death of three-year-old Ifeanyi Adeleke, son of music artiste, Davido, and his fiancée, Chioma Rowland, may remain in police custody until they are cleared by an autopsy report.

A credible source, who disclosed this to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, said the nanny and the cook were directly in charge of Ifeanyi’s welfare, adding that they might also be liable for negligence.

The source said, “The cook and the nanny were the ones directly with the child, so, they are guilty of negligence until the autopsy is conducted. During investigation, we have suspects, and depending on the case, the suspects may or may not be released.

“So far, the family has not objected to the autopsy, but how fast it will be done depends on the hospital. But the next move is to review the CCTV at the house.”

PUNCH Metro had reported that after Ifeanyi’s corpse was recovered from the swimming pool at his father’s residence in the Banana Island area of Lagos State, it was deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.

The police subsequently invited eight domestic workers and after interrogation, six of them were released.

However, two others, the nanny and the cook, were detained.

Contacted for a follow-up reaction, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the detention of the suspects, declined to give further details to avoid preempting investigation into the case.

He said, “If we need to detain them for longer than necessary, we will obtain a court order so as to ensure that we are not doing over detention or illegal detention.

“I can’t give much details about an ongoing investigation, but those two people detained are assisting us in our investigation. Those that were released have little or no bearing to the case but the two people detained are assisting us.

“Eight people were brought in for questioning, six people were allowed to go, the remaining two were the ones that have been placed under arrest and that makes them suspect.”

The spokesperson for the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, Asha Gangali, who described the death of Ifeanyi as devastating news, enjoined the state government to review the laws granting ownership of swimming pools to people in the state.

Gangali said, “We would rather enjoin the Lagos State Government to review the permission that is given for swimming pools and certain structures in residential areas that can endanger the lives of minors.

“So, if it is approached from a law standpoint, it will be binding on all. It is not just that we are losing our precious children in the creative and movie industry, it also affects every other individual. If people should have a swimming pool in their residence, there should be precautions to prevent such happenings.”

Recall that Daniel, the first son of another music artiste, Dapo Adebanjo, aka D banj, drowned in a swimming pool at his residence in Lagos in 2018.

Meanwhile, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday, commiserated with the bereaved parents.

Osinabjo, in a post on his Twitter handle, said, “Dolly & I are greatly saddened by the tragic loss of Ifeanyi, the dear son of Davido & Chioma. We pray our Lord Jesus Christ will comfort & uphold both of them through this traumatic experience. Amen. We also commiserate with our brother, Dr. Deji Adeleke and the entire Adeleke family. You are constantly in our thoughts and prayers.”

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, urged residents in the state to abide by the universal rule that guide the usage of swimming pools.

He said, “I am not sure you need a permit to build a swimming pool in your house, but I know that before you build a house, you bring the drawing for the government to approve.

“But if somebody has any emergency, whether it is in a swimming pool or club house, the state has a solid emergency machinery that swings into action within seconds. But people need to call those emergency numbers to make a report.

“The particular case you are talking about is a family tragedy and the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, personally commiserated with Davido on this irreparable loss.

“For us in Lagos, it is not a time to begin to look into what the government is doing about people building swimming pools in their homes.

“There are universal rules about how to use a swimming pool; if you are a minor, you can’t go in there alone; if you want to swim, you must ensure that there are lifeguards around and should anything happen, there must be people to raise the alarm; the swimming pool must be clearly marked to prevent a novice from going beyond certain meters, among others.”

Family23-year-old Mechanic Disappears, Family Seeks Help by ISTP(op): 3:38am On Nov 02, 2022
A Lagos resident, Babatunde Banjoko, has cried out following the disappearance of his brother, Adewale.

The 23-year-old mechanic was said to have left his parents’ house at Igando in the Alimosho area of Lagos State on October 14 and never returned home.

Babatunde told our correspondent that the family, which had been disturbed by the incident, reported a case of a missing person at the Igando Police Station.

He said, “I gave them the necessary information they requested except for his picture that I am taking there later.

“My grandmother in Ondo State said she heard his name announced on a radio station to be among some people that were arrested in a state in the South-East. But, she is too old to remember which particular state it was.”

The distraught brother appealed to the public to help with information that might help in finding his brother.

“My mum has not been told yet because she is hypertensive and we fear what will happen if we tell her. Everyone is worried,” he added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said he was not aware of the matter.

“For it to have been reported, work has definitely begun on the case,” he added.

PoliticsFayose In Court Over Unpaid ₦‎900 Million Legal Fees by ISTP(op): 3:19am On Nov 02, 2022
ISTP:
A former governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayo Fayose, on Tuesday appeared before the Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division, in a suit filed against him for allegedly owing his former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Owoseni Ajayi, N900 million in professional fees.

Ajayi, who was Fayose’s AG during his first and second term tenures as Ekiti governor, filed the suit on December 17, 2018.

In the suit with registration number HAD/113/2018, Ajayi said that he, through his law chambers, handled 18 personal cases for Fayose, with each costing N50 million as professional fee, which he alleged the former governor failed to pay for.

He said the cases, which bordered on Fayose’s impeachment in 2006 and the corruption suit filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, among others, were prosecuted between 2006 and 2014.

Ajayi, who prayed the court for “an order compelling Fayose to pay the professional fee without delay,” also sought “an order compelling the defendant (Fayose) to pay 20 per cent interest on the debt from October 5, 2018, and 10 per cent from the day of judgment.”

But the former governor, in his preliminary objection, urged the court to dismiss the case on the premise that it was statute-barred, improperly constituted, and that the claimant failed to comply with the conditions precedent.

During cross-examination, Fayose, who described himself as a full-time politician, admitted in his April 16, 2019 statement on oath that the suit was ill-conceived and lacked the legal validity to file.

On his relationship with the former AG, Fayose said, “Yes, I know him. He did some work for me. Between 2006 and 2017, he worked with me and kept documents for me.”

Ajayi was represented by Bayo Idowu, while the former governor was represented by his counsel, Ahmed Tafa.
