Career / Twitter User- 'your 9-5 Jobs Job Won't Buy You A Benz', Nigerians React by Iykelinus(m): 9:46am On Sep 08, 2019
There's an ongoing social media debate between Nigerians on which is best, being self-employed or employed.

Both parties debate on whether being self-employed or employed has better financial reward.

It all started when a Twitter user identified as @Ayo_Aroloye tweeted, claiming that being in paid employment will not provide an employee
with the financial means to afford to buy a Benz car.

“Your 9-5 won’t buy you that Benz. Put yourself out there dear,” he tweeted.

However some Nigerians reacted:

@Ayo_Aroloye, The Ayo of Lagos,
claiming that being in paid employment will not provide an employee
with the financial means to afford to buy a Benz car.

“Your 9-5 won’t buy you that Benz. Put yourself out there dear,” he tweeted.

The tweet ignited a passionate debate amongst young people on social media.

In responding to the tweet, Mowgli with the handle @abdomos tweeted:
"My 9-5 can buy me Benz (not buying tho). You people should stop using
this to justify entrepreneurship. In everything we do, let's just keep
working hard and pray for God's favour."

Another user, Sir Diskson @wizarab10 said being an employee or an
employer does not exactly guarantee wealth.

He said: “The richest people are entrepreneurs. The poorest are also
entrepreneurs.”

@khal2m_ukay tweeted: “Just because entrepreneurship made you
successful doesn't mean a 9-5 job won't give someone else success too.
We are all different & it is really immature and absurd to think that
a person with a 9-5 job isn't living a good life cos he/she isn't an
entrepreneur.”

Neijo, a user who tweets @Nejjman_digs_u, also disagreed that salary
from paid employment cannot buy a Benz.

Crime / 14 Million Nigerians Are Drug Addicts by Iykelinus(m): 2:54pm On Aug 11, 2019
Legalization of hard drugs for adult frivolous exploit and for medicinal purposes is, at this time, the subject of much public debate.

In May 2019, Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, and Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah rtd, the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) travelled all the way to Thailand to learn more about how to grow cannabis.

This has sparked various reactions from different quarters of the country. Whatever the upshot, public health experts are concerned about the increasing abuse of drugs among youngsters, since marijuana use as an adolescent may damage the developing brain, lower IQ, and seriously weaken the ability to drive safely, particularly when combined with alcohol.

Over the past year alone, nearly 15% of the adult population in Nigeria (around 14.3 million people) reported a “considerable level” of use of psychoactive drug substances—it’s a rate much higher than the 2016 global average of 5.6% among adults.

The survey was led by Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Center for Research and Information on Substance Abuse with technical support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and funding from the European Union.

It showed the highest levels of drug use was recorded among people aged between 25 to 39, with cannabis being the most widely used drug. Sedatives, heroin, cocaine and the non-medical use of prescription opioids were also noted. The survey excluded the use of tobacco and alcohol.
Youngsters prefer an independent and sovereign life that is free from adult control, thereby engaging in various antisocial acts (drug abuse, rape, stealing, cultism and vandalism) that are perilous to the home, community, school and the country as a whole.

The impact of drug abuse among young people has been a stigma of moral dissipation, brutality, thuggery, physical attack, lunacy and murder. The hazard of drug abuse has eaten deep into the fabrics of the nation.

Since the early times, herbs, leaves and plants have been used to cure and control diseases. The use of drugs in itself does not pose any danger, because drugs correctly administered have been a blessing.

The use and abuse of drugs by teenagers have become one of the most alarming health-related phenomena globally.

Youths, particularly those in secondary school tend to see the drug abuser as one who is tough, bold and strong. Many adolescents have been known to use drugs at the instance of peers, elders or siblings.

Students who typically feel derisory have been known to use drugs to achieve societal acceptance. Some drug addicts become insane, maladjusted to school situations and eventually drop out of school.

Association with drug-abusing peers is often the most instant danger for exposing young people to drug abuse and antisocial behavior, says Adenike Olurin, a medical expert at Yaba Psychiatric Hospital in Lagos.

According to Olurin, other facets, such as drug availability, drug trafficking patterns, and beliefs that drug abuse is generally accepted, are also risks that can sway young people to start to abuse drugs.

“Several youth abuse drugs because they see their friends indulging in the act. And, because they don’t want to be seen as a coward, they follow suit.
“Some teenagers suffer from despair, nervousness, stress-related disorders, and physical pain.
“Using drugs may be an attempt to minimize these feelings of depression. Tension and trauma principally play a major role in starting and continuing drug use as well as returning to drug use for those recuperating from an addiction.”
Expressing her displeasure for drug addicts, Blessing Okogue, a 39-year-old medical doctor says addiction occurs when frequent use of drugs changes how a person’s brain functions over time.
Okogue pointed out that abused drugs interact with the neurochemistry of the brain to produce feelings of pleasure.
“The strength of this ecstasy differs by the type of drug and how it is used.

“We live in a competitive society in which the demands to perform flexibly and academically can be extreme.
“Some youth may turn to certain drugs like prohibited stimulants because they think those substances will enhance or improve their performance.
“Youths of these days smoke Indian herbs to last longer in bed; we have heard of boys using Tramadol to boost their sexual performance. Meanwhile, Tramadol is a pain reliever drug for sickle cell patients.
“Teenagers are often propelled to seek new experiences, especially those they identify as exciting or daring. Inquisitiveness to try out the unknown facts about drugs thus influences people into drug use. The first incident in drug abuse produces a state of excitement such as pleasure and happiness which in turn encourage them to continue”, Okogbue added.
In Lagos, Oludairo, a young guy on the streets of Ikeja, shared his story as he held a cup of gin and a wrap of marijuana. According to him, he began smoking at age 12.
“I was in secondary school when I first tasted ‘igbo’, Diaro says, as he inhales and puffs out a white paper containing marijuana.
“At first, I was scared to taste it, but then, my friends encouraged me, saying it will clear my head and make me read and comprehend fast.
“ I tried it, it worked, even though the first and second time was a little bit rough for me.
“Since then, I have not been able to stop it. Instead, I graduated from one form of substance to another.

“ But, It’s cool. I have no regrets.

When asked if he would encourage his children to follow his lifestyle, “I can’t”, he replies almost immediately.
Sipping his ‘shekpe, tall and skinny Dairo noted that although, he knows smoking is harmful to this health, he finds it hard to quit, and will never encourage any of his children to smoke.

In an earlier visit, in 2018, to a psychiatric hospital in one of the southwestern states by this reporter, some inmates were seen secretly taking hard drugs. The drugs, it was gathered, were received through the help of nurses on duty. The inmates, who are still battling with addiction, would secretly keep the substances neatly ‘under their lockers’.

A 29-year-old lady, Adanna, in treatment for heroin and nicotine addiction, believed that addiction was a part of human nature.
“I feel like everybody got addiction; you know what I mean, ‘because they have an addiction to smoking, addiction to going to work, you know, so somebody has an addiction somewhere in them.”

Connecting her experience to a trend she perceived in others, Adanna had developed a sense that her addiction, though problematic and disabling, was not unique to her, but in fact, a common experience along the spectrum of “normal” human behaviour.

Health / Young Man Uses Art To Treat Patients In Nigerian Hospitals by Iykelinus(m): 12:22pm On Aug 06, 2019
In a country with low awareness of mental health issues, one man is using art to help patients recover.

Whenever Kunle Adewale visit hospitals in Nigeria, it is not for medical check-ups or family visits but to help treat patients using art.
Kunle founded Tender Arts Nigeria in 2013 with a team of artists, dancers, musicians, and creative writers.
“As an artist, I realised that we have not fully maximised the healing and therapeutic potential of the Arts," he told TRT World
"There is such a huge gap between the art and healthcare sector, which shouldn’t be the case, especially with so much research backing the benefits of art in health.
“I was inspired to see how art can be used in different ways to transform the healthcare experience of patients and their caregivers. This process allows patients and caregivers to express themselves through the arts.”
Kunle prepares patients for medical procedures by integrating drawing, painting, murals, music, dance, storytelling, spoken word poetry and expressive writing into creative therapies.

They are part of an arts programme to help patients recover from their medical conditions within hospitals and hospices in Nigeria.
“We work with professional musicians and instrumentalists to facilitate our music in medicine sessions.”
“We sometimes request that patients write their own songs that they would like us to perform; I have seen this bring huge happiness, acceptance, and inclusion to persons with mental illness.” Adewale said.

Authorities of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) have began lobbying the National Universities Commission (NUC) for increase in the existing admission quota allotted the institution initially pegged at 10,900, it was learnt
Indeed Vice Chancellor of the institution Prof Sulyman AbdulKareem revealed that Unilorin would admit about 12,000 candidates for the 2019/2020 academic session.

Prof Abdulkareem said the move was to accommodate huge number of admission seekers, particularly now that Unilorin has become one of the most subscribed citadels of learning in the country.

Speaking at the annual breaking of fast (Iftar) with reporters in Ilorin, Abdulkareem disclosed that his goal was to have limitless admission quota but for NUC and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) regulatory activities.

The VC stated that the allocation of admission quota for students was dependent on carrying capacity and facilities on each campus of the universities.
He added that the main challenge his administration was grappling with was how to provide enough classrooms because of increase in the number of students on campus.

Abdulkareem noted that the university was currently making use of available large lecture theatres to accommodate the students, adding that he had reached out to the Tertiary Education Fund (TETFUND) for support in building large lecture halls.

He maintained that the institution had provided sufficient gadgets in the lecture theatres on campus to make lecture delivery easy for both lecturers and students.
He said: “My goal as Vice-Chancellor is to have limitless admission quota but we know that is regulated by NUC, and they usually base that on facilities on campus. I must disclose that for 10 years, I was admission Chairman for University of Ilorin.

The Ogun Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said loss of lives was averted on Saturday after a tanker loaded with petrol collided with a truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Florence Okpe, the Corps’ Route Commander, made this known in a statement in Ota, Ogun.
Okpe explained that the accident which occurred at about 2:51a.m, involved four persons with two injured and no death recorded.

Romance / Pastor Exposed By Wife For Allegedly Sleeping With Men by Iykelinus(m): 12:29pm On May 25, 2019
A woman has come out to expose her husband who happen to be a pastor on how he has been sleeping with me.

She shared her ordeal with 3FM in Accra, revealing how her husband has been having s-x with men after she stopped giving him anal s-x.

According to the woman (name withheld), her husband who is a well respected pastor, has been engaging in homosexual act for the past two decades.

In the revealing letter in which she is seeking help, the woman said she has had enough of the husband’s sexual orientation and can no longer continue keeping the ‘dark secret’.

She wants renowned counsellors and panel who appear on the Saturday morning show hosted by broadcast journalist, Etornan Sey, to advise her on the issue which has become her biggest headache in their over 20 years of marriage.

Read below the full letter from the woman to the show host

“Dear Etornam,

It has taken me years to gather courage to speak about this situation of mine. I’m not really sure how to say it.

A month after we got married I realised that my husband loves anal sex. It was very uncomfortable for me and that made me hate sex with him.

I mean this is a man of God, a very renowned man of God here in Ghana who preaches the word of God on TV and on Radio. But he loves porn and loves anal sex.

After months of painful sex I decided to deny him anal sex so he started bringing small boys to the house and sleeps with them. Some of the boys are as young as 19.

He sleeps with them and gives them money. I have walked in on them several times. Initially I felt betrayed but later I realized that, the boys were giving him what I couldn’t and that gave me peace of mind. This situation has gone on for 26 years we’ve been married.

We have 3 children(all female) who live abroad with my younger brother. The children know about their dad’s situation and do not want to have anything to do with him but he(my husband) cannot be bothered. It almost as if he has been possessed.

How a man of God full of the Holy spirit can live such a sinful life confuses me sometimes Etornam, I just can’t comprehend. Sometimes the boys, most of whom are Senior High School students leave school and come to him at home for sex in exchange for money and provisions. He enjoys it, he enjoys the anal sex so much as though his whole life depends on it.

But I weep for these young boys, sometimes they literally limp out of the house with their butts dripping. Some of them wear diapers because their butts are not the same. I feel terrible, I have been living a lie for years and I feel this whole sacrilege will come crushing on me soon.

I mean, how do I stop my husband, a pastor, renowned man of God from sleeping with little boys for pleasure without it affecting my reputation and stigmatizing my children? I just can’t seem to wrap my head around it. It worries me a lot Etornam and I feel God will never forgive me if I don’t stop him… But how do I do that? How? Please help me, I need your help”

Crime / How Lagos Teacher Flogged Student Till His Right Eye Went Blind by Iykelinus(m): 12:32pm On May 04, 2019
For Daniel Agboola, a Senior Secondary School Two pupil of Camp David Academy, Ogba, Lagos State, Friday, March 29 is a date etched in his memory for life. It was the day his teacher, Mr. Oludare Olaleye, damaged his right eye in the process of caning him.

The day had begun like any other as Daniel and his classmates prepared to sit for an examination in the school’s hall. Olaleye, the supervisor for the exam, told the pupils to move out of the hall because the questions for the examination were not ready.

“As we moved out, he stood by the narrow door. As the last pupil to leave the hall, I had barely stepped out when he (Olaleye) called me back, saying that I hit him while I was rushing out of the hall,” Daniel recalled.
Convinced that he did not hit Olaleye, Daniel said he politely told him so, but that became his undoing.
“He did not allow me to say any other thing. He took his cane and started beating me,” he said.
Daniel recalled that as Olaleye continued to flog him, the cane landed on one his right eye and he collapsed.
He said: “I became weak. It was like I was dead. I could not say anything and did not remember anything. My head was empty. But he probably thought I was pretending, so he beat me the more, asking me to getup. I mustered the last energy in me to get up and I moved out of the hall while he shared the exam papers to my other classmates.
“It was when my classmates shouted that blood was coming out of my eyes that I went to the school’s accountant office to explain everything to her.
“The school sent for a doctor who happened to be one of the school’s parents. She said that nothing was wrong with the eye. Because the eye was swollen, she put ice block on it and said we should seek the advice of an eye specialist.
“The school accountant and I went to the nearby Blue Cross Hospital in Ogba, but we were told that no eye doctor was available and we were referred elsewhere opposite the hospital. On getting there, they too did not have an eye doctor around, so we were referred to another place in the same complex.

“The doctor, after testing the eye, said there was nothing wrong with it. He said it was a minor issue and recommended some eye drops we should buy. The doctor also referred us to Vision Plus, an eye hospital in Ikeja, to check the eye pressure.

“All the while we were moving around, blood was still coming out of my eye. It was swollen, the pain was much and I was not seeing anything with it. I covered the eye from the sun as we headed back to school.

“The accountant and Mr Olaleye later took me to Vision Plus where the eye pressure was checked and we were told to come back for the result the following Monday.

“We went back to the school and I later went home with the eye drops we had bought earlier. I was using the eye drops until the person who was applying them for me discovered that two of them had expired since October last year.”

Daniel added: “On Saturday (the day after the incident), the school took me to Eye Foundation where the eye was tested. The eye surgeon was not around and I was given some other eye drops and tablets.

“They said there was nothing wrong with the eye but that the blood could not flow. So they told us to come back the following Thursday.

“When we got there on Thursday for another round of tests, they still said that nothing was wrong with the eyes.

“It was when we went back there on Friday that we met the eye surgeon who after scan and tests said the eye has traumatic cataract and would need operation.

“He prescribed another eye drop for me because the eye pressure had not gone down. He said the normal eye pressure should be 16 but mine was 32.

“He said the operation could not be done immediately because the pressure of the eye must return to normal first.

“He said the operation would cost N1 million, but the school said the money was too much and that we should try other hospitals.

“The school also took me to Aricillia Catholic Hospital where they said the lens of my eye, which was supposed to be white, was covered with blood, hence other eye drops were prescribed for me.

“The doctor also said I had traumatic cataract and the operation would cost N1 million.”

Daniel said since the incident, he had not been able to go anywhere.

He said: “I have to sit in one place. I can’t look down; I have to always look straight. I could not even finish my exam.

“I can only see with my left eye. My right eye can no longer see anything. It is very blurred. I can’t read or move the shortest distance with the eye. Even if I hold a phone, I cannot see anything on it.”

Daniel’s mother, Hannah Agboola, blamed the school for not contacting the family immediately the incident occurred. She accused them of taking her son round hospitals without the knowledge of his family.

“What I know is that when something happens to a child, the father, mother or guardian should be first called to be notified and decide on what to be done to the child. I also know that students are not meant to be beaten in schools.”

She lamented that after the teacher beat her son and he fell down, the teacher kept beating him and did nothing to help the boy.

She said: “Daniel could not sleep the night the incident happened. He cried all through the night because he was in pains. His eye was dropping some liquids. It was like the eye wanted to remove from the socket. He was just shouting and rolling on the floor.

“Due to this, my blood pressure rose to over 250. Since the incident, I have not gone to work. I have not been to my shop. I have lost money taking care of Daniel.”

She recalled that two of the eye drops bought for her son were expired.

She said: “We discovered the Monday after the incident on April 1, while applying one of the eye drops given to us, that two of them were expired. One was dripping something like oil. We notified the school on the expired drops, but the school director told us he could not do more than he had done and that we should do whatever we wanted to do.

“But the school director later begged. While this was going on, we were called to come to the school; that officials from the state Ministry of Education were in the school. I went with my son and met two representatives from the ministry.

“The ministry told me they would handle the case; that it was already a government matter and that they would call me. But I have not heard anything from them till today.

“My son is not troublesome, I gave birth to him and I know him well. He has never had a problem with his eyes. Nobody in our family has eye problems. His father and I have sharp eyes.”

Mrs Agboola said that since her son’s eye pressure would not go down, she decided to get a chalet at the Mountain of Fire Ministries where she has been praying for her son.

Health / What To Do When You Can't Sleep At Night by Iykelinus(m): 12:04pm On May 04, 2019
The amount of sleep a person needs depends on many factors, including age. In general, adults need to sleep for about seven to nine hours every night.
However, experts say that if you feel drowsy during the day, even during boring activities, you haven’t had enough sleep.

Sleep Debt
The amount of sleep a person needs also increases if they have been deprived of sleep in previous days. Getting too little sleep creates a “sleep debt”, which is much like being overdrawn at a bank. Eventually, your body will demand that the debt be repaid.

Consequences of Too Little Sleep
Too little sleep may cause a number of problems, including memory loss, a feeling of depression, weakening of the immune system, pain and even sickness.
Many studies make it clear that sleep deprivation is dangerous. Sleep-deprived people who are tested by using a driving simulator or by performing a hand-eye coordination task perform as badly as or worse than those who are intoxicated.
Sleep deprivation also magnifies the effect of alcohol on the body, so a fatigued person who drinks will become much more impaired than someone who is well rested.
In fact, you should be very careful about driving, if you don’t get enough sleep.
The National Sleep Foundation, a US nonprofit organisation that promotes public understanding of sleep and sleep disorders, says you are probably too drowsy to drive safely if you have trouble keeping your eyes focused, can’t stop yawning, can’t remember driving the last few miles, have trouble holding your head up, and keep drifting in and out of lanes.
However, if you are the type that has difficulties sleeping at night, there are some things you can do to improve your chances of getting a good night’s rest.

Think positive
Ridding your mind of negative thoughts calms you down and makes you more likely to fall asleep.

Pick one thing to focus on
Focusing on something specific could be just what you need to get sleepy.

Pretend to be tired
Concentrate on the kinds of things you would feel if you were tired, like drooping eyes, the room darkening, or the sensation of sinking into your bed. Before you know it, you just might experience them!

Adjust your temperature
Even if you can’t completely control the heating and cooling system in your home, you can control your body. Put the fan closer to your face when you are too hot or bundle up when you are too cold.

Read, or watch a movie
Try reading, but not on your laptop or phone, but with a paper book. Dim the lights in your room (or use a lamp) so you can see comfortably. You can also watch a good movie.

Listen to music
Don’t go for a loud, blasting dancehall beat. Some simple, acoustic, minimal percussion music might be perfect for getting your eyes to droop.

Stretch
Yes, you can try this sleep hack without getting out of bed. Put your legs up against the wall to calm your central nervous system. You can also do some light leg and arm movements and exercises on your back to release any excess tension.

Relax from head to toe
Concentrate on each muscle, starting from your toes.

Make a journal
If your mind is racing, grab a notebook and jot down every thought you have. Just get everything out until you are out of ideas and start to tire.

Drink something hot
Making yourself a glass of hot milk with honey or decaffeinated tea could warm your body up for rest.

Stick your feet out
Research says that keeping your toes cool makes you more likely to fall asleep.

Cover your eyes
Even if your room is dark, grab a cloth and cover your eyes so that all you can see is sleep!

Crime / Hairdresser Commits Suicide Over Disagreements With Boyfriend In Lagos by Iykelinus(m): 11:50am On May 04, 2019
A resident of Fadausi Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos State, Kenile Nwabuzor, has killed herself following protracted disagreements between her and her boyfriend identified as David.

City Round gathered that the duo had endured an unhealthy relationship since they met about two years ago.

Our correspondent learnt that the matter came to a head on Thursday, April 11, 2019 when the 26-year-old hairdresser decided to commit suicide after David reportedly said he was no longer interested in the relationship.

Shortly before the incident, she was said to have sent a text message to her boyfriend, lamenting he had made life miserable for her and that she would soon kill herself.

Speaking to our correspondent during the week, David, a graduate, said he hooked up with Nwabuzor two years ago while she was mourning the death of her mother.

He said Nwabuzor, who is a secondary school leaver, expressed fears that their relationship might not work out because of the disparity in their educational qualifications.

He stated, “She was my girlfriend and I loved her so much. We started dating each other about two years ago. She was not that literate, but I told her it didn’t matter. When we met, she was in distress. Her mother just died then and she was living alone. She said she could not live without her mother. Her brothers are based in Ghana, but they usually sent her money.

“She told me she finished secondary school, but I don’t think so. I really wanted to help her improve on her education. She easily got angry and if she had a disagreement with someone, she might not talk to that person again for years. As our relationship continued, I tried to correct her. I persuaded her to be going to church and bought a Bible for her. We usually had disagreements over petty issues.

“If we had a misunderstanding, I could be in her house for hours begging her and she would not say anything. If I decided to go, that would be another fight. At times, the misunderstanding would last for days.”

David, a photographer, told City Round that Nwabuzor usually accused him of being promiscuous, adding that he found it difficult to dispel her belief.

“Because of the nature of my job, I have girls around me. She would be complaining that I was going out with them. I tried to tell her that she needed to trust me. I also saw boys around her because she was beautiful, yet I trusted her.

“Recently, she said I didn’t love her again. She changed her phone’s password to deny me access to her phone. She accused me of sleeping with women. It was true many ladies wanted me to ask them out, but I ignored them,” he added.

David explained that four days before the unfortunate incident, he had missed Nwabuzor’s calls while on an assignment at an event. He said he got back home late that day and returned her calls, but she did not pick them.

The photographer stated that when he called Nwabuzor the next day, she started insulting him and he ended the call.

He went on, “She sent me text messages, but I didn’t reply. On Tuesday, I went to her house to return the charger she lent me and when I was about to leave, she returned all the things I had bought for her. That night, she sent a text message to me, saying that I had stopped loving her since December 2018 when we had fun at different places.

“She said she was no longer interested in the relationship. In my reply, I told her she was free to find her peace anywhere else. On Wednesday morning, I thought about everything again. I knew she was depressed and I had been the person encouraging her. I sent her another message, begging her. Most times, she would be the one to say she was not interested in the relationship, yet she would be crying. I was always the one saying sorry.

“That Thursday, she came to our house for the first time and met with my parents. That was the day my father knew her as my girlfriend. She reported me to him and said she was no longer interested in the relationship. My father sought my opinion and I said I didn’t have any comment.

“She started crying. She called one of her brothers and told him she was coming to Ghana. My father is a clergyman. He tried to counsel her. As my father was talking to her, she was crying. At a point, she stood up and left. Afterwards, I left for my workplace.”
David told our correspondent he was in the studio when he received WhatsApp voice messages from Nwabuzor, but he was busy to listen to them.

He said she later sent a text message to him, saying, “You want to kill me; I will help you kill myself. Thank you for making my life a hell.”
He said immediately after he read the message, he took a motorcycle and headed for her house.

“On getting there, I peeped from her window and saw her body dangling on a rope tied to the ceiling. I shouted and barged into her room. Her neighbours helped me loose the rope while I brought her down. She was already heavy, but I was not feeling the weight.

“I was not in my right senses again. I took her on a motorcycle to a nearby hospital. She was referred to Randle General Hospital. A doctor confirmed her dead on arrival. I called her brother and relations. The police arrested me and detained me for two days. They said I should not have brought her down,” he stated.

Our correspondent learnt that the deceased was buried on Saturday, April 13 which was David’s 26th birthday.

“I have lost my sleep these days because of the incident. I am still going through the trauma,” David added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, said the police had received a distress call from the general hospital that one Kenile Nwabuzor was brought in dead by her boyfriend.

He said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the lady had earlier sent a text message to her boyfriend that she would kill herself. Her corpse was removed and deposited in the Lagos Mainland Hospital morgue.”

Career / See 6 Ways Social Media Is Currently Affecting Your Mental Health by Iykelinus(m): 8:06pm On May 02, 2019
There is no doubt that the advent of social media has brought it with many welcomed and some not so welcomed developments. Social media platforms have revolutionised the way we stay in touch with each other and it has become an integral part of the daily life of many.
While there are many positive roles played by social media, it has many setbacks as recent reports have said that over- or misuse of social media can have a negative impact on self-esteem and mental health, particularly among younger users.
So how and when might social media use be detrimental to our mental wellbeing?

Addiction
One piece of research posited that tweeting or checking emails may be ‘harder to resist than cigarettes and alcohol’. The more social media use becomes an important part of our daily routine, the more we may become too emotionally and psychologically dependent on it. Asides that, addiction to social media affects our everyday relationships, sleep hygiene, or our performance at work or in our studies.

The Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) Factor

Getting into the habit of checking social media at any available time may lead to us checking on impulse. This can lead to us never really switching off or taking time to relax. Many social media users today live in the fear of missing out on an update from a friend or celebrity causing them to constantly check their social media platforms at all available given times.

Comparison
One thing that makes social media fun is that we get to have a glimpse into the lives of others and keep up to date with them. However, being in constant contact with the lives of others can lead to critical comparison leading to feelings to insecurity. We forget that most of what we see on social media platforms are carefully selected and filtered content and we aspire to unrealistic expectations.

Loneliness
One study has suggested that the more frequently you visit social networking sites the more likely you are to feel socially isolated. However, like many of the studies exploring the effects of social media on mental health, it is difficult to pinpoint causation.

Cyberbullying
One major headache of social networking is the issue of cyber or online bullying. 70 percent of young people and 40 percent of adults say that they have experienced some form of cyberbullying. The Royal Society for Public Health says that victims of bullying are more likely to experience depression, anxiety and even self-harm.

Anxiety and depression

One study has reported that simultaneous use of multiple social networking sites led users to be more likely to report feelings of anxiety or depression. Those that already have difficulties with anxiety, problems such as body dysmorphic disorder and low self-esteem issues may be compounded by social media.’

Lawyer Jefferson Uwoghiren who shared the story stated that Dennis got wounded during a raid by the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Edo State command.

According to Jefferson,
"This young man, Dennis Amadasun was rushed to my office early this morning, a victim of gunshot by careless and negligent police officers attached to the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Edo State Command."

"Dennis was shot and wounded around 2:00am in his house in Ugbiyokho Area of Benin when the police stormed the house allegedly in search of internet fraudsters!!! Bleeding and weak from the injury, Dennis was abandoned and left to die by the officers."

"His angry relatives brought him to my office, whereupon I advised that the matter be reported at the nearest police station. Dennis was taken to Evbuotubu Police Station where the galant DPO politely asked him to leave. Since his men, didn’t participate in the raid, why should he bear liability for treatment?"

"With no police report, private hospitals declined treatment. Thanks to Dr Philip Ogbodaga, the management of Specialist Hospital, Benin agreed to treat Dennis subject to their Security Protocols."

"This evening the police brought money to support the ongoing treatment and they informed me that Dennis was never a target of their raid.

"This bloody incident is a painful lesson in reckless wickedness. There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in the storm. This storm will also subside."

Crime / Cleric Who Helped Kidnappers To Terrorize Innocent People Confesses(photo) by Iykelinus(m): 3:38pm On Apr 27, 2019
An Islamic cleric identified as Salisu Abubakar has given details to the police on the role he played in encouraging activities of suspected kidnappers in some northern parts of Nigeria.

The acting Inspector General of Police, Yakubu Abubakar and other service chiefs have been under pressure following the rise in cases of kidnap along Abuja-Kaduna expressway. Several strategic raids of suspected hideouts led to the arrest of suspected kidnappers and their accomplices. One of such persons is Salisu who was arrested by operatives attached to the Inspector General of Police, Intelligence Response Team, a move that has led to the arrest of several suspects.

According to police source, police acted based on intelligence report generated by the Technical Intelligence Unit(TUI) on April 4, about the activities of alleged spiritual adviser of the suspected kidnappers in the North especially Kaduna axis. On April 16, after serious and unrelenting follow up, operatives of IRT succeeded in arresting Salisu Abubakar, inside a bus in Galadimawa village, Kaduna state.

Salisu aged 48, who is a native of Dutsinma in Kastina state confessed to the police that he is their spiritual adviser. He disclosed that most of his clients operate along Abuja, Kaduna, Zaria, Niger and Kastina states axis. While the interrogation lasted, Salisu had to pause severally to receive calls from them.

My job is to pray

Responding to questions, Salisu insisted that his only job is to advise the suspected kidnappers when and where to attack.

“I was an honest cleric before those bad men took over our community and some of us for fear that they will kill us, decided to work for them.

“I am happily married to four wives and God blessed me with 15 children. My father is from Kastina state but relocated to Kaduna because he acquired a massive land for farming. He was also very spiritual that was why he sent me to Arabic school. I also learnt how to cultivate Maize and Guinea corn. Luckily when I was at the Arabic school, I got the gift of vision and healing.

“I started practicing and also farming because then we made a lot of money through farming. About 10 years ago, kidnapping and cattle rustling increased. It was no longer safe to be seen as a successful farmer. If they do not kidnap you they will wait till the day you harvest your crop and attack. For a man with so many children, I needed to train my children, so I decided to start using my gift to make extra money. I started about eight years ago, to pray for people and in exchange they will pay a certain fee. Go to our community and ask about me. We rarely go the hospital. I guess it was my popularity that brought them to my shrine. Three years ago, they kidnapped me and told me that they are not interested in money but my powers. They forced me to pray and advise them for one operation and I did. They were very successful and happy. The next day I was released but with the condition that I will be working for them. They threatened to wipe out my entire family if I fail to co-operate with them.”

On the payroll of 15 gangs

According to Salisu, more than 15 different criminal gangs consult him on a monthly basis and he has never failed them. “They trust my work so much because for the past three years that I started praying for them, none has failed to succeed in any operation they set out to do. I became so popular because they normally share the good news with others. They come looking for me from different parts of the country especially the north. I do not ask for anything much but the cost of procuring the things needed for prayers. It is left for them to decide to give me anything extra.

“I have tried my best to stop them but whenever they come to my shrine, they are armed. I thought of running away from the community but I was shocked when one of them traced me to Kaduna town. I feel safe working for them and for the past three years, they have not harassed me or any member of my family.”

Crime / Nigerian Army Reacts To Video Of Soldiers Cutting A Criminal's Leg by Iykelinus(m): 3:41pm On Apr 26, 2019
The Nigerian Army has reacted to the trendy video of men in military uniforms cutting a criminal's leg.

The press released by Nigerian Army is stated below:

The Nigerian Army (NA) has observed with dismay a video clip circulating on some social media platforms showing some persons in camouflage uniform mercilessly disfiguring a leg of a fellow human being, with some others shabbily, carelessly and variously dressed. Some are wearing bathroom slippers.

The NA wishes to emphatically state that having thoroughly examined the video and investigated further, it has reached the factual conclusion that all the characters involved in the despicable act are not personnel of the NA.

The action of the characters in the video clip particularly the act of meting out cruel punishment, talk less of decapitating a part of a fellow human being is not licensed, encouraged or condoned by the NA and is entirely against NA’s training, Code of Conduct (COC), Rules of Engagement (ROE) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in or out of conflict situations.

Instructively, the camouflage used by the characters in the video is not the type been used in the NA and does not in any way conform to the dress code of the NA. Similarly, NA troops are not allowed to wear bathroom slippers and civil outfits during operations.

NA troops fighting insurgency in Nigeria, have severally captured many terrorists, took custody of many surrendered terrorists some of whom have been prosecuted, while those that voluntarily surrendered are undergoing de-radicalization and rehabilitation under the Federal Government programme codenamed Operation SAFE CORRIDOR.

NA wishes to once again remind members of the public that not all photos and videos being circulated on social media and other outlets are truly members of the NA. NA has also severally and consistently made it clear that it monitors and will continue to monitor the actions of its personnel to ensure they are in conformity with extant laws and in line with International best practices.

Under the present leadership of the NA, sufficient efforts have been made to ensure personnel respect human rights in line with the ROE, COC and SOP. Any violation attracts appropriate punishment in accordance with the extant military justice system.

Members of the public are requested to note that the barbaric act (as shown in the video clip), has often been associated with the terrorists either as a punishment to one of their own or to send out powerful message to their followers and the larger public with the sole aim of instilling fear which is one of the major basis and aims of terrorists/terrorism.
