Israel and Gaza militants vowed to keep fighting after US President Joe Biden urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to seek a "de-escalation" on the path to a ceasefire in the conflict. An Egyptian security source said the two sides had agreed in principle to a ceasefire after help from mediators, although details were still being negotiated in secret amid public denials of a deal to prevent it from collapsing. Palestinian health officials said that since fighting began on May 10, 228 people had been killed in aerial bombardments that have worsened an already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Israeli authorities put the death toll at 12 in Israel, where repeated rocket attacks have caused panic and sent people rushing into shelters. In Gaza, the sounds of explosions roared at nightfall with heavy bombardments reported in the enclave's centre and south. Hamas began firing rockets on May 10 in retaliation for what it said were Israeli rights abuses against Palestinians in Jerusalem during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Israel launched another series of air raids on the Gaza Strip on Monday after its caretaker Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attacks on the Palestinian enclave would rage on. Most of them were intercepted by Israel’s air defence system. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and rights groups meanwhile called for a probe allegations of war crimes committed by Israel. An Israeli air strike in Gaza destroyed several homes on Sunday, killing 42 Palestinians, including 10 children, health officials said, as militants fired rockets at Israel with no end in sight to seven days of fighting. The Israeli military said the civilian casualties were unintentional. It said its jets attacked a tunnel system used by militants, which collapsed, bringing the homes down. Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, called it "pre-meditated killing". As the U.N. Security Council convened to discuss the worst Israeli-Palestinian violence in years, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel's campaign in Gaza was continuing at "full force". Netanyahu also defended an Israeli air strike on Saturday that destroyed a 12-storey building where the Associated Press and the Al Jazeera TV network had offices. He said the structure also housed a militant group's intelligence office and was thus a legitimate target. "We are acting now, (and) for as long as necessary, to restore calm and quiet to you, Israel's citizens. It will take time," Netanyahu said in a televised address after meeting with his security cabinet. The death toll in Gaza jumped to 192, including 58 children, its health ministry said, amid an intensive Israeli air and artillery barrage since the fighting erupted last Monday. Protesters have stormed Shoprite outlet at Novare Gateway, Lugbe, Abuja to express their displeasure over xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africans. Since reports of the attacks in South Africa broke, Nigerians have stormed the premises of several businesses of South African origin such as Shoprite and MTN in Ibadan, Lagos, and a few other locations. Protesters, however, stormed Shoprite Lugbe outlet on Wednesday, Igbere TV reports. An MTN office in the area is also said to have come under attack. According to reports, the protesters have resorted to burning tyres after a clampdown by security operatives. MTN and Shoprite have condemned the xenophobic attacks in South Africa and called for peace and harmony. The latest attacks in South Africa began last week after a taxi driver was murdered by an alleged drug dealer in Pretoria. Speculations that the alleged killer was a Nigerian sparked protest, looting and burning of business centres owned by foreigners.
