Salt Salt is poisonous to chicken at high concentration but can be beneficial to the birds incase of heat stress. You only need 1 cup of water, ⅛ teaspoon of salt and 1½ teaspoonful of baking powder. This is served to every bird. |
Sour Milk Sour milk act as a probiotic, it improves immunity as it kills harmful bacteria in the birds' intestine. Add it to feeds to form lumps but do not drench or add it to drinking water, it prevents diarrhea. |
Aloe vera Aloe vera is very bitter but aloe vera juice acts as an appetizer and can also be used in treating wounds. Squeeze a few drops of aloe vera juice into the wound, it prevents cannibalism. It is a natural antibiotic when 5 ml of it is added to 3 litres of drinking water. |
Pepper Pepper has been known to improve metabolism. It is useful as it kills parasites that cause digestive problems like coccidiosis. It also kills worms by burning them. Half teaspoon of powdered pepper can be sprinkled in chicken feed or feed to them free choice. |
Ginger Ginger has antiviral properties. Ginger in chicken feed or drinking water will boost appetite, helps digestive system and also acts as immune booster. Add a small pinch of ginger powder to the birds' feed, feed it as whole or grind it. |
Garlic Garlic is a family of onions. It boosts birds' immunity, fights respiratory diseases and also produces sulphur in the body. It can therefore kill external parasites because the sulphur in the chicken's blood will overpower the parasites. Just add 3 cloves of garlic to 5 litres of water or a pinch or two of powdered garlic in dry feeds everyday. |
Spices are useful in our day to day activities especially for cooking of food. Only few people know that these spices can also be used to cure certain ailments in the poultry flock. It simply means that you cannot only cook your chicken with spices but also use the same spices to treat certain poultry infections. Ginger, pepper, salt, garlic, aloe vera, turmeric and sour milk are just among the food and spices that are medicinal in nature. They are therefore essentially required by farmers practising organic farming. To be continue |

Heat stress is a negative balance between the net amount of energy flowing from the animal’s body to its surrounding environment and the amount of heat energy produced by the animal. It is uncontrolled flow of heat between the bird and its environment. The birds are stressed up when there is difficulty in achieving temperature balance and die when it is greater than normal for a very long period of time. Heat is produced internally in birds by metabolic processes like growth and egg production. This imbalance may be caused by variations of a combination of environmental factors like sunlight, thermal irradiation, and air temperature, humidity and movement, and characteristics of the animal like species, metabolism rate, and thermoregulatory mechanisms. Environmental stressors, such as heat stress, are particularly detrimental to animal agriculture. The issue of environmental stress has quickly become a great point of interest in animal agriculture, particularly due to public awareness and concerns. Some of the symptoms or exhibiting signs of heat stress in poultry are: ~ Spreading of wings. ~ Diarrhea. ~ Pale combs and wattles. ~ Laboured breathing and panting. ~ Opening of mouth always. ~ Seizure or convulsion. ~ Decreased appetite. ~ Drop in egg production. ~ Increased thirst. ~ Lying down. ~ Closed eyes. ~ Lost of body weight. ~ Lethargy or droopy acting. ~ Increased cannibalism. If any of the symptoms above is being noticed, it means you have to verify some other exhibiting signs to confirm the heat stress in poultry. Once it is confirmed to be heat stress, the following steps have to be taken to quickly control the situation: # Make sure there is access to clean, cold drinking water at all times. You can even add ice cubes to cool it. # Provide shade from direct sunlight. # Feed them during cooler time of the day to minimize heat generated by digestion. # Keep them calm by preventing them from children, cat, dog or other pets chase and disturbance. # Supplement the lost electrolytes as a result of panting. # Water melon in mostly water and chickens love it. Add sliced water melon treat to them at least once in a week during hot season. # Apart from placing ice cubes in their water, you can also add frozen strawberries and red grapes in ice cube trays. All the tips serve as guide to understand better about heat stress, causes of heat stress and control of heat stress in poultry. We wish you best of luck! |
Feed and space are essential factors that should be properly monitored for profitable commercial broiler production. Poor or inadequate feed can lead to poor growth, runts, diseases and infections. Space should be just enough for optimum broiler production as inadequate space promotes overcrowding, Heat Stress and high temperature-related infections. For a sensitive farmer, there are many methods of determining the required space and the quality, quantity of feed for broilers at different age. This is being based on the practical experience and in-depth research...... |

YOU INITIATE* * WE PROCESS* *WE DELIVER A. Broiler Starter: This is high in protein, about 22-24% Digestible Crude Protein (DCP), and energy. It is given from day old until 4-6 weeks old. At this stage, a chick needs at least 2.65kg of feed. B. Broiler Finisher: This is expected to contain about 18-20% DCP depending on the marketing target of the farmer. It has a lower protein and energy content than starter. It is given from about 4-6 weeks until targeted table weight is attained. Since broilers are meant for meat production, they require feed with a higher content of DCP. A bird will need within 2.5kg to 4kg at this stage of their life. Therefore, you will need the followings to make 70 kg of broiler starter. * Whole maize = 40 kg * Fish meal (Omena) = 12 kg * Soya beans = 14 kg * Lime = 4 kg 2. Feed for Laying Birds A. Starter: This class of feed should have about 18-20 DCP. Layers can be given broiler starter in their chick stage. This is given for the first 8 weeks. They can also be given chick mash. A chick will need about 1.2kg at this stage. B. Grower Feed: This feed should have 16-18% DCP. Given from 8 to 20 weeks or when 5-10% of the birds start laying. About 5.2 kg of feed is required at this growing level. C. Layers Feed: This feed should at least contain 18% DCP. It is introduced when 5-10% of the birds start laying and it is given until the birds are sold. A chick needs at least 5.2kg of feed and then 150g per day at laying period. To make 70 kg of layers feed which contains at least 18% DCP to meet nutritional requirement, you will need to mix: * 34 kg of whole maize * 12 kg of Soya * 8 kg of omena * 10 kg of maize bran and * 6 kg of Lime (as a calcium source) 3. Feed for Cockerels Unlike the other two poultry birds, cockerel do not really need high DCP. Broiler Starter can be given for the first 6 weeks. Then, low quality or cheap feed can be served after 6 weeks. The farmer may formulate a cheap feed from soyabean meal, groundnut cake, maize, palm kernel cake and vitamin mineral premix. Other way round, the cockerel can be allowed to free-range feeding and supplement that with small quantity of high quality commercially packaged feed. Cockerels are less productive in terms of meat increase. Farmers can constitute feeds with a DCP of between 15 –16 %. A bird needs 5.2kg starter, 250g per day grower and 265g per day finisher. The following recipes are needed to make 70 kg of the feed. * Whole maize = 34 kg * Soya bean = 12 kg * Omena = 8 kg * Maize bran = 10 kg * Lime = 6 kg Bookings/order placements; Call: 08042110512, 08136290387 Whatsapp: 07036023050 or 08136290387 Happy Birds, Happy Farmer* |
YOU INITIATE* * WE PROCESS* *WE DELIVER 1.) The birds need at least 16 hours light during laying period. 2.) Deworming should be done regularly at an interval of 6-8 weeks depending on the worm load, especially when reared in deep litter system. 3.) YOU INITIATE* * WE PROCESS* *WE DELIVER There three types of feed for layers depending on their age and nature. These are Starter, Grower and Layer feeds. Starter feed is given for the first 8 weeks and a chick will need at least 1.2 kg of the feed at this stage. Grower Mash is given to the birds between 8 to 20 week of age or until when 5 to 10% of the birds started laying. They need at least 5.2 kg of feed at this level. A bird is expected to weigh at least 1.5 kg at this stage. Layers Mash is introduced to the birds when 5-10% of the birds have started laying. They are being served with this feed until the birds are sold. A laying bird will need about 115g of the feed per day of laying period. This article is a modified medication routine for noiler which make it as a guide. It may be subjected to change based on symptoms experience in the birds. 2.) For the fact the noilers can feed on low quality feed and still do good, they are therefore prone to Coccidiosis, especially between 4 and 6 week old. It is therefore suggested that Anticoccidiosis and Antibiotic treatment should be repeated every two weeks if necessary. 3.) In the remaining days not catered for in this article, clean water, organic supplement or apparent disease treatment can be given to the birds. 4.) Second Gumboro may be given within their days before fourth week to fortify the immune system. 5.) Other advantage of noilers is that they can be subjected to partial or complete free range system after four weeks under good monitoring condition. Noiler birds can also mature before four (4) months depending on certain factors like biosecurity, stock density, air quality, feed quantity and quality Bookings/order placements; Call: 08042110512, 08136290387 Whatsapp: 07036023050 Happy Birds, Happy Farmer* |
Noilers are basically raised for meat even though they also lay eggs. Their meat is tougher than that of broiler but not as that of local chicken. Noilers are multi coloured compared to broilers which are mainly white and the pullets that are mostly brown. Feed Requirement Amo Noiler feed on the same feeds used for other birds but were limited to chickmash and grower mash. The birds eat more than other breeds but they are good converters of feeds because the weight is higher than that of cockerel at maturity. There are Male and Female lines of Amo Noiler. The females start laying from the 17th week which means, for optimum performance, they have to be separated from male line by 10th week (70 days). Hence, their feeding programs are slightly different. The feeding program is highlighted below based on the gender line: i) Males 0-28 days: Broiler starter 29-70 days: Grower mash Above 70 days: Broiler finisher ii) Females 0-28 days: Broiler starter 29-98 days: Grower mash Above 98 days: Layer mash It takes four months to harvest and the farmers can get over 3kg of meat compared to cockerel which takes about six months to attain 2kg. If properly kept in a disease-free environment, the breed is always strong and healthy throughout the four months. Space Requirement Since noilers are more or less like broilers in term of body size and weight, a noiler bird require almost the same space like that of a broiler bird. A noiler needs 1.5 sqft in a deep litter system and 1.0 sqft in a slatted floor or cage housing system. The additional advantage of noilers is that they can be allowed to free-range in secured area after for weeks.
